National Cultural Connotation in Japanese Anime --Taking Detective Conan as an Example

Japanese animation enjoys a high international reputation, and the animation industry is one of the most influential industries in Japan. It not only entertains the public, but also spreads Japanese national cultural values. Among them, Detective Conan has been broadcasted continuously for more than 20 years and is one of the most influential phenomenal anime works in Japan. Culture is the root and soul of a country, which can unite social consensus and enhance the sense of national identity. One of the major reasons for the great success of Detective Conan is its close integration with Japanese national culture. This paper takes Detective Conan as an example, selects the case of combining the anime plot with Japanese national culture, and analyses the mapping of Japanese animation on Japanese national culture. It helps to improve the knowledge of Japanese culture, and also provides a direction for the development of Chinas animation industry.

An Analysis of Transmedia Storytelling of Chinese Animated Films Based on the Perspective of Media Mix

In recent years, Chinas animation industry has drawn on the experience of some developed countries in the process of development. For example, Japan has already formed an animation industry and disseminates its works through various media through transmedia storytelling to obtain better communication effects. There are still some problems with transmedia storytelling and media mix in Chinese animation. This study uses a content analysis and ethnographic approach to compare Chinese and Japanese animation movies in terms of the number of transmedia and the effect of transmedia communication. In order to analyze the problems of Chinese animated films in transmedia communication, as a further extension of transmedia theory in animation, this paper summarises the problems of Chinese animated films in transmedia communication based on previous theories of transmedia communication as well as research on Chinese animation, and suggests that Chinese animated films should perhaps learn from Japanese animation films to increase their interaction with other media, and to become part of the media mix of Chinese animation. According to statistics, it was found that the number of Chinese animated films spread transmedia in 2019 was much lower than that of Japanese animation films, which means that if Chinese animated films are seen as part of a media mix , there are still have problems with Chinese animated films. Improving the linkage of animation films with other media to increase the number and effectiveness of their transmedia dissemination may be the solution.

A From Literary Roots to Media Studies: The Artistic Use of Defamiliarization Technique in Tom &Jerry (animated series)

William Hanna and Joseph Barbera’s creation Tom & Jerry is widely regarded as one of the greatest animated series of the 20th century. This iconic series is evidence of the lasting appeal of animation and its ability to captivate viewers for decades.With its innovative approach to visual storytelling, timeless humour, endearing characters, and most notably its artistic use of defamiliarization technique, Tom & Jerry has left an indelible mark on the animation industry, providing amusement to viewers of all ages around the world and firmly soldifying its status as a true masterpiece. Based on the visual analysis method, this paper adapts Shklovsky’s technique of ‘defamiliarization’ from the field of literature to the domain of media studies, explaining its different facets and exploring its practical implications. By transcending the boundaries of its original literay context, this paper aims to throw light on the many ways in which defamiliarization manifests itself in Tom & Jerry animated series and how it has a big impact on getting viewers to change their habitual reactions to artwork and instead percieve it in a fresh, vivid, and intense way.

Karakteristik Interjeksi Dalam Serial Animasi Nussa Dan Rarra: Kajian Morfologis

The aim of this research is to, (1) describe the form of interjection in animated series Nussa and Rarra. (2) describe the types of interjections in animated series Nussa and Rarra. This research is qualitative research and uses descriptive methods by describing the data found to obtain general conclusions. The data used in this research are sentences containing morphemes, words and interjection phrases which were downloaded through animated series Nussa and Rarra. The first result found is the form of interjection in Nussa and Rarra animated series consists of two forms, the basic form (20 data) and the derivative form (7 data). Second, based on types, eight types were found, (1) exclamation interjections namely ayo, eh, ehm, yuk, halo, (2) astonishment or admiration interjections namely masyaallah, hm, wah, hah, oh, uh, haduh, iya ya, alhamdulillah, lho, (3) sadness interjections namely aduh, uh, hm, (4) sadness interjections namely ih, hm, hadeh, eh, aduh, wah, astagfirullah, (5) disappointment and annoyance interjections namely ih, hm, hadeh, eh, aduh, wah, astagfirullah, (6) surprise interjections namely hah, aduh, wah, eh, astagfirullah, ih, ya ampun, astaghfirullah 'al-‘adziim, waduh masyaallah, ah, (7) relief interjections namely alhamdulillah, nah, haah, aha, hm, insyaallah, and (8) disgust interjection namely ihh.

The contemporary Mongolian cultural landscape: Cultural influences, language skills, and the impact of foreign cultures

This article examines the contemporary Mongolian cultural landscape and explores the influence of foreign cultures on Mongolian youth. The study investigates the effects of foreign cultural dominance on Mongolian language proficiency, traditional Mongol script skills, and the appreciation of the mother tongue. Additionally, the article delves into the impact of Korean bubble-culture, social media platforms, Hollywood movies, Japanese anime, and capitalist art on Mongolian youth, with a focus on their potential for escapism and desensitization. Furthermore, the article discusses the clash between traditional Mongolian cultural values and those of dominant foreign cultures, and the resultant devaluation of Mongolian cultural heritage. Ultimately, the study aims to shed light on the challenges and potential alienation faced by Mongolia's cultural landscape.

Onomatopoeia, Sound Effects and Humour in Japanese Anime and US Animation Films and Television

Onomatopoeia are words signifying sounds by phonetically imitating or suggesting them. Research into the use of onomatopoeia in literature, language and comics has been rich and varied while the study of the use of onomatopoeia in film, television and their functions has so far been limited. This article focuses on two aspects: (a) the relationship between onomatopoeia and sound effects in US animation and Japanese anime; and (b) audiovisual humour caused by the use of onomatopoeia and sound effects in US animation and Japanese anime. The author introduces classifications and usage patterns of onomatopoeia in English and Japanese, and analyses the different types of onomatopoeia and sound effects in recent popular US animation films and TV, and in Japanese anime and their contributions to creating humour by applying humour theory (incongruity theory in particular). This study combines film analysis, soundtrack analysis, linguistic analysis and theories of humour, and will be of interest to students and scholars of film, sound, linguistics, psychology and other subjects interested in the study of onomatopoeia and audiovisual humour.

UNSUR ESTETIKA PADA KARAKTER DAN CERITA ANIMASI ADIT SOPO JARWO

Adit Sopo Jarwo is one of the most popular animated series in Indonesia. In this series, there are many aesthetic elements that make it interesting and entertaining. These elements include character design, animation, backgrounds, music, and narration. The character designs in Adit Sopo Jarwo are very unique and alluring. This article uses two methods in this research, namely literature study and observation. Aesthetics in animation also involves choosing the right colors. Color can be used to create different moods in animated scenes. For example, bright, cheery colors could be used for scenes that are happy and cheery, while dark, muted colors could be used for scenes that are mysterious or scary. The aesthetics of the animated film "Adit Sopo Jarwo" brings the conclusion that this film has an attractive visual quality. The use of 3D animation provides subtle detail and gives life to the characters. The arrangement of bright and cheerful colors creates a fun and kid-friendly atmosphere. In addition, the unique and diverse character designs are also the main attraction of this film.

Representation of Landscape and Ecological Vision in Miyazaki’s Filmography

This study analyzes the central role of landscape in Hayao Miyazaki’s films. The depiction of landscape in Miyazaki’s films goes beyond mere visual backdrops in order to convey deep symbolic meanings and to foster an empathic connection between the viewer and the world depicted. The renowned Japanese animator, filmmaker, screenwriter, draftsman, manga artist and film director has strongly promoted environmental awareness in his productions by paying close attention to the depiction and visualization of landscape dynamics, using details, and real and invented elements to create an engaging visual experience. The landscapes also take on emotional, metaphorical dimensions, reflecting the emotions and inner thoughts of the characters. Through an in-depth critical analysis of eleven selected films, the proposed research identifies the character-defining elements adopted by Miyazaki to stimulate reflection on a sustainable combination between urban development and the preservation of natural elements, as well as increasing focus on the beauty of the landscape, thereby highlighting the importance of its preservation. The relevance of this research is to understand Miyazaki’s approach to creating representations of natural elements and how he has managed to combine them with the plots of his various films, indirectly stimulating environmental awareness and fascination with nature in its different forms.

Custom JWST NIRSpec/IFU and MIRI/MRS Data Reduction Pipelines for Solar System Targets

We present custom JWST data reduction pipelines for JWST NIRSpec/IFU and MIRI/MRS observations of solar system objects. The pipelines simplify the process of reducing the JWST observations, and include custom steps to significantly improve the data quality. Our custom processing routines include a “desaturation” routine to reduce the effect of saturation while still maintaining high signal-to-noise ratio, and custom flat field correction code to remove the significant artifacts found in MIRI/MRS observations. The pipelines also automatically generate a series of quick look plots and animations to simplify exploration of a dataset. Modern Anxieties and Traditional Influence in Horror Anime

Japan has a longstanding tradition of horror narratives that feature a variety of macabre embodiments. They draw upon ancient folklore, thereby providing a unique perspective on spirits specific to Japanese culture. The influence of these countless supernatural beings from Japanese mythology and folklore has molded many incarnations seen in popular culture, which have been commonly deemed “strange” and “weird”. This study seeks to demystify the ambiguity and “strangeness” surrounding three Japanese anime series, Another, Yamishibai, and Mononoke. It attempts to analyze how each of these anime employs folklore and traditional art-styles to portray a modern society plagued with sociocultural complications.

Subject playing with flat images: Transmedia spreadability of anime and manga character images

Anime and manga characters are so ubiquitous in Japan that people see them anywhere, regardless of public or private. The two-dimensional flatness of line drawing allows the character images to straddle the boundaries of the worlds of works and media. The analysis of individual artworks needs to be revised to understand the transmedia spreadability of characters and our living conditions. This paper, thus, overviews the preceding discussions of anime and manga scholars on human-character relations and compares them with the theory of subject formation in film studies, whose realist tendency once emphasized the three-dimensional space and time. While psychoanalysis-influenced theories such as suture and male gaze model after one-point perspective and subordinate two-dimensionality, Thomas Lamarre formulates a de-unified perspective in relation to the multilayered image field of Japanese anime. In conjunction with the orientation of cultural and fan studies to emphasize audience agency, this article discusses the de-unified perspective on flat images which has the potential for understanding the complexity of subject formation through the interplay with two-dimensional images.

Rhythmic Vitality: A Study of the Artistic Expressions of Chinese Animation Master Te Wei

The author intends to do a comprehensive analysis and examination of Mr. Te Wei's notable animation works, including "Tadpole Looking for Mother," "Pastoral Flute," "Landscape," "Proud General," and several more. To commence, this analysis will begin by examining the works of Mr. Te Wei and their significance as a foundation for understanding. Subsequently, the locations within Mr. Te Wei's works that hold educational value will be scrutinised, leading to the formulation of the research's objective. This text elucidates the comprehensive process of Mr. Te Wei's creative cognition, effectively conveying a denouement that is both comical and dramatic. In contemporary culture, the intensification of labour and the pace of life have contributed to an increasing burden on individuals. Notably, a considerable number of Chinese animations have excessively emulated Japanese animations, therefore neglecting the distinctive cultural attributes of our own nation. Hence, this article endeavours to systematically expound upon the artistic style and expressive techniques of Mr. Te Wei, a renowned figure in Chinese animation, by analysing representative works such as "Shepherd's Flute" and "Landscape". The aim is to cultivate the audience's appreciation for Mr. Te Wei's creations and enhance their comprehension of his artistic expression. The artistic expression exhibited by Mr. Te Wei, a prominent figure in Chinese animation, has the potential to evoke inspiration and contemplation among viewers. Specifically, his work prompts reflection on the dearth of humour within contemporary society and the absence of national cultural elements in the realm of animation.

Climate Change as Dark Magic in <em>Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir</em> Animation

Examining engagement and responses to a digital binge drinking campaign for young males in Florida

Objective: This study evaluates Drunken Rewind, an animated digital media campaign designed to reduce binge drinking. Participants: The campaign was targeted to white males aged 18–34, who are at the highest risk of binge drinking. Methods: The intervention consisted of an animated series that merged health communications approaches with marketing strategies to disseminate health messages. Digital metrics and comments were analyzed to assess receptivity toward the intervention. Results: The series amassed over 900,000 views and 1,762 followers across four social media platforms. Viewer retention rate was between 67%–73% over three seasons; 68.3% of comments on the videos were positive. Conclusions: This study adds evidence that a digital intervention aimed at reducing binge drinking can be feasibly implemented and positively received by a population that is difficult to reach with health messaging. This approach may be useful when applied to other health issues young adults perceive to have lower risk.

“Dude” and “Dudette”, “Bro” and “Sis”: A Diachronic Study of Four Address Terms in the TV Corpus

This corpus linguistics study offers a diachronic perspective on masculine and feminine address terms by analyzing the frequencies of the pairs “dude”/”dudette” and “bro”/”sis” in the 325 million-word TV Corpus. Results show an increase of the frequency of “dude” and “bro”, a quasi-absence of “dudette”, and a stable but low frequency of “sis”. They suggest that “dude” and “bro” have taken on generic meanings, while the usage of “sis” remains kinship-specific. They also show that familiarizers are more frequent in American English than in British and Canadian English, and that their frequency in the TV Corpus is genre-dependent, with animated series and reality television shows being more conducive to their use.

Ocean Awareness Campaign for Environmental Well-Being in the Upin and Ipin Animated Series Season 11: Explore The Ocean

The world’s ocean covers 71% of Earth’s surface and is an integral part of the environment entrusted to humanity for its care. In this regard, one’s relationship with mother nature is to fulfill their life’s purpose in creating mutual harmony and balance among nature and all beings. At present, there have been significant destruction and damage upon the ocean and marine life caused by humans, thus affecting members of the community whose livelihood depend on it. Multitudes of media platforms currently provide channels to educate the public on the importance of the ocean ecosystem for future generations. Therefore, awareness campaigns on the said ocean conservation through media and communication are imperative to influence attitude and behaviours particularly among young audiences and motivate them to engage and participate in the discourse. This study explores the strategy behind the popular children’s animated series, Upin and Ipin in the introduction of ocean elements to inculcate appreciation for the environment. Using a qualitative content analysis, the animation series was analysed thematically and guided by the Nurul Akma Osman animation publishing model. The findings established that an awareness campaign on environmental conversation is present through the theme elements and topics, plots and scripts, characters and characteristics, and backgrounds that are features of animated series. The presentation based on these elements also reflects the efforts of the animated series to create a more organic approach on greater understanding of mother nature for young children. Transgenderism and Japanese Anime: A Case Study of Kmpfer

Japanese anime has gradually become popular in the worldwide animation market since the 1980s and 1990s. But it is only in recent years that it has begun to receive academic attention as part of popular culture studies. This paper focuses on gender transitioning in Japanese anime and its relationship with transgenderism. After a brief introduction to the history of gender transitioning in Japanese anime, it critically reviews related literature on Japanese anime and transgenderism. Through an analysis of specific work Kmpfer, which centers on gender transitioning, this paper explores transgenderism in Japanese anime. This paper argues that the subgenre of gender transitioning anime is not progressive, but instead reinforces male dominance and concepts of gender binary. Researchers of Japanese anime seldom pay attention to gender transitioning as a subgenre, and scholars of gender studies rarely consider how Japanese anime, with its huge influence on transgender communities in Japan, affects the way Japanese people perceive gender transitioning. This paper connects the two fields to examine issues that have often been neglected.
