Fallout 239,240Pu concentrations in some autopsy tissues from the general population in Japan are described. Body burden and relative distribution among tissues of plutonium were obtained by extrapolating using the mass of relevant tissues of the normal Japanese adult. 239,240Pu-to-90Sr body burden ratio was obtained. ICRP models were used to estimate body burden and relative contribution of ingestion intake. Need for data on the intraskeletal distribution of fallout plutonium and more information on gastrointestinal absorption in man was stressed.

Eruptive Vellus Hair Cysts in a Japanese Adult

To the Editor.— Esterly et al 1 described the entity of eruptive vellus hair cysts (EVHC) in 1977. Since then, there have been two additional reports in the United States 2,3 and one in Korea. 4 The typical lesions consist of multiple, miliary papules with the histologic feature of intradermal cysts containing numerous vellus hairs and keratinous material. We observed the first patient in Japan recently. Report of a Case.— A 25-year-old woman had had a two-year history of asymptomatic skin lesions on the anterior part of her chest wall. The lesions were blue-black, smooth papules, 2 to 3 mm in diameter and numbered more than 20 (Fig 1). The patient had no symptoms suggestive of systemic diseases and denied having previous local skin disorders in the affected area. Morphometric studies on the calyx minor of the Japanese adult (author's transl)

Few reports have been made about the pelves and calyces which have various shapes and sizes. In this paper, the calyces minores of the 70 kidneys of the Japanese adult are studied. These calyces were filled up with yellow latex rubber from the ureters, and were taken out from the kidneys. In these specimens, the calyces minores were identified by the hollows which corresponded to the renal papilla, irrespective of the presence of a neck part. Six hundred and two calyces minores in 70 kidneys were observed with regard to the following items;(1) The number of the calyces minores : The mean of the number of the calyces minores was 8.6 (4-16) in one kidney. These numbers of calyces minores did not correlate to the length, width, thickness and weight of the kidneys. (2) The presence of necks of the calyces minores: The presence of necks were classified into the following 3 types : 0 Neck type ; 398/602 (66.1%).(2) Half-neck type; 148/602 (24.6%). (3) Non-neck type; 56/602 (9.3%).(3) The shapes of the calyces minores surfaces: The surface shapes were classified into the following 6 groups: (1) Quadrilateral shape; 19/602 (3.2%). (2) Gourd shape; 43/602 (7.1%). Triangular shape; 35/602 (5.8%). (4) Circular shape; 91/602 (15.1%). (5) Elliptical shape; (3) 163/602 (27.1%). (6) Irregular shape; 251/602 (41.7%).(4) Directions of the calyces minores : The calyces minores were divided into the following 3 directions: (1) Ventral direction: 220/602 (36.5%). (2) Lateral direction; 178/602 (29.6%). (3) Dorsal direction ; 204/602 (33.9%).(5) Areas of the calyces minores surfaces : These surface areas were analysed using the following 3 categories: (1) Mean area of all calyces minores: The mean area of 602 calyces minores surfaces was 41.5 mm2 (0.8.163.5 mm2) in 70 kidneys. (2) Total area It was a sum of all calyces minores areas in one kidney. The mean of them was 356.8 mm2 (193.6.703. 9mm2) in 70 kidneys. (3) Mean area of one kidney : It was a mean of one calyx minor surface in one kidney. The mean of them was 43.0 mm2 (14.3-100.6 mm2) in 70 kidneys.(6) Coefficiency of the correlation between areas of calyces minores surfaces and the kidney: The total area was correlated with the length and weight of the kidney (P<0.01). (2) (1) The mean area was also correlated with the length and weight of kidney (P < 0.01). (3) However, the mean area was negatively correlated with the number of calyces minores (P < 0.01).(7) Position of the calyces minores : They were nominated as upper or lower calyces minores, according to their location to the ureters. (1) The number of the upper calyces minores; 285/602 (47.3%). (2) The number of the lower calyces minores; 317/602 (52.7%). (3) The mean of the total area of the upper calyces minores of the 70 kidneys ; 181.3 mm2. (4) The mean of the total area of the lower calyces minores of the 70 kidneys; 178.0 mm2(8) The difference between right and left calyces minores in the same body: (1) The number of the left calyces minores was greater than the right. (2) The number of the dorsal directions of the right calyces minores was greater than the left. (3) In general, the total area of the left calyces minores was larger than the right. (4) On the contrary, the mean area of the right calyces minores was larger than the left.

A mathematical model of a phantom developed for use in calculations of radiation dose to the body and major internal organs of a Japanese adult.

A mathematical model of a phantom simulating the body and major internal organs of a Japanese adult has been developed for use in computer calculations of radiation dose. The total body height of the mathematical phantom is 162 cm, and the total body mass is 55 kg based on densities of 0.3, 1.4, and 1.0 g/cm/sup 3/ for the lung, skeleton, and bulk tissues of the body, respectively.

成人の手部平面積の非対称性について

手掌部平面相は, 把持動作等における接触域の指標として, 身体活動の遂行において考慮すべき形質と考えられるが, 従来殆んど言及されていない. そのため,成人男女合計139名について面積測定し, きき手別の集団で検討した. その結果, 平均値は男14Ocm^2, 女12Ocm^2前後を示し, 男女共優勢側の値が, 非優勢側に比して大きかった. スポーツマンの結果と比較すると, 一般成人では両側とも小さいことが知れた. 非優位側の優位側に対する割合は97〜99%を示し, Verchuerの平均百分率偏差を求めた結果, 男女間や左右優勢群間に特定の傾向は認められなかった. 平均値で示される一般的傾向に従がわないもの, すなわち非優位側が優位側よりも大きい例は, 男の右優勢群で12(21.4%), 左優勢群7(23.3%), 女の右優勢群で6(15.8%), 左優勢群6(40.0%) となり, 比較的高い頻度で出現することが明瞭となった.

ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF "ACTIVE DEPOSIT OF LEAD (TEISINGER)" IN THE JAPANESE FREE FROM OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE TO LEAD

Intravenous infusion of CaEDTA was given to 45 Japanese adults without occupa-tional exposure to lead for 1 hr in a dosage of 20 mg/kg body weight in 250 ml of 5% glucose solution. The urinary excretion of lead was estimated for 24 hr before, and for 2 hr and 24 hr after the administration. The least variation of the lead content was recognized in the 24 hr urinary excretion after the injection of CaEDTA. No sexual difference was noted in the creatinine-corrected lead concentration.By multiple linear regression and correlation analyses, age was found to be sig-nificant in determining positively the lead level mobilized in 24 hr urine samples. Height was significant in determining positively the spontaneous 24 hr urinary lead excretion.Certain significant correlations existed among lead in blood, ALA-D in erythrocyte, δ-ALA in urine, coproporphyrin in urine, lead in urine and lead mobilized by CaEDTA.The existence of active body burden of lead was suggested in human subjects under usual urban condition where the total ambient lead averaged 1.7 μg/m3 of air.Based on a few assumptions, it was calculated that about 3 μg of lead was retained on average per day by a Japanese adult; daily retention of lead by Japanese adults was formularized, i.e., Pb (μg)=K×daily creatinine excretion (g), where K is 1.77 in men and 2.73, women.

STUDIES ON THE EOSINOPHIL CELL. (I)

In the pleural-fluid, obtained from the pleuritis-patients, the eosinophil cells are scarecely found; but often abundant in the fluid, obtained from the pleuralsinus in the course the artificial pneumothorax. The eosinophilia in the fluid comes into existence within 3 days after the first pneumothorax-therapy. When sinus-fluid is found, the percentage of eosinophil cells in peripheral blood of the artificial pneumothorax patients are higher, as compared with that in other times. The lung and bone marrow of guinea pigs, which underwent the artificial pneumothorax, showed marked eosinophilia, but the eosinophil cells percentage decreased in the peripheral blood.In the sputum of the patients, who underwent artificial pneumothorax, the eosinophil cells slightly increased in number.From these results, I conclude that the eosinophilia of the fluid, found in the pleurasinus, comes into existence in close connection with the eosinophilia of the lung and the bone marrow.The confidence limit and the rejection limit to which the eosinophil cells percentage of the average Japanese adult may safely be regarded as appropriate are 2.8-1.9% and 6.7-0.3%.The peritoneal fluid of the non-managed guinea pigs often showed marked eosinophilia.
