Soh-phlong,Moghania vestita a leguminous root crop of India

Of the many edible tuberous legumes that occur wild in the humid tropical-subtropical regions of India — viz.,Eriosema chinense, Moghania tuberosa, M. vestita, Pueraria tuberosa andVigna capensis — onlyMoghania vestita is cultivated as a minor food crop. It is eaten raw by the tribals of the Khasi and Jaintia hills (Assam, India) and is grown by them in the mountainous tract between 1000 and 1600 m, in a landscape predominantly occupied byPinus khasya grassland mixed vegetation. Since no significant account of this root crop is available and no mention of it is made even in some of the recent compilations on economic plants (11, 13), a survey of current information dealing with its early history, cultivation, distribution and usage is presented here.

Palyonology of the Shillong front: Part II- Paleogenes of Khasi and Jaintia hills

Palynological study of 90 samples of the Palaeogene sediments collected from five traverses on the south of Khasi and Jaintia hills has yielded a rich assemblage of spores, pollen and microplankton including a few dinoflagellates and fungal spores. In this area, sediments of mainly shelf facies are exposed but near Haflong both shelf and geosynclinals facies lie very close. Stratigraphic sequence of the shelf facies consists of Langpar, Therria, Sylhet Limestone, Kopili and the undifferentiated Barail Sediments. In the geosynclinal part, over the Disangs lie the Barails which are differentiated into Laisong, Jenam and Renji Formations. The palynofossils recovered here are assigned to 41 genera and 67 species, out of which 23 species are newly proposed. Based on quantitative assessment of the marine and terrestrial forms, palaeoecological interpretations are made. The sediments studied here are homotaxial with the Palaeogene sediments of the Garo hills. The Disangs which were hitherto reported to be barren have yielded a good number of fossils.

Five new species of spiders are described in this paper. Most of the species were collected from Khasi and Jaintia Hills, Assam. The new species belong to four genera distributed in the family Thomisidae.

Blood Groups among the Khasis

THE Khasis are inhabitants of the district of Khasia and Jaintia Hills, Assam. They are short statured with a high mesocephalic head, a meso-prosopic face and a mesorrhine nose, and in the height of the root of the nose above the level of the orbit they are pro-opic. The head varies from long to medium and has a high vault. The hair is of medium growth, straight and black in colour. The forehead is vertical and medium in height. The depression of the nose is shallow and the nasal bridge is concave. The malars are prominent and there is no alveolar prognathism. The lips are of medium thickness, the chin ordinary and the angle of the lower jaw medium. The eye colour is light brown and the eye slit is horizontal.
