Identification of Peptide Binding Motifs for Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate UsingPhage Display.

Selective control over crystallization in complex multicomponent systems such as hydrating cements is a key issue in modern material science. In this context, rational selection-based approaches appear highly promising in the quest for new additive chemistries. Here we have used phage display to identify peptide structures showing high affinity to adsorb on the surfaces of calcium sulfate hemihydrate (also referred to as bassanite), an important hydraulic binder employed in large scales by the construction industry. The results suggest a triplet of amino acids consisting of aspartic acid, serine and leucine, to maintain strong interactions with the surfaces of hemihydrate particles. This notion is confirmed by actual hydration experiments, in which the identified peptide motif provides strictly selective effects during the transformation of bassanite into more stable gypsum. Our work thus contributes to a better understanding of hydraulic binders and their required improvement for a sustainable future.

The influence of gamma radiation on the structure and morphology of AgNWs/GO nanocomposites

In this study, AgNWs/GO nanocomposites were prepared by mechanically mixing graphene oxide (GO) synthesized using a modified Hummers' method and silver nanowires (AgNWs) synthesized using a modified polyol method. These nanocomposites were subjected to gamma radiation at three different doses (8, 25, and 50 kGy). Modification of materials by gamma radiation is a very important issue in materials science. The effects of gamma radiation on the structure of the nanocomposites were investigated through X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. Changes in morphology depending on the radiation dose were examined using transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. Elemental analysis was performed before and after irradiation. For GO irradiated at a dose of 25 kGy, the strain and dislocation density values reached their highest levels (ε = 0.065 and σ = 3.33 × 1012 cm−2). Following gamma radiation exposure, the strain and dislocation density of AgNWs showed a non-linear decrease compared to the initial sample. The highest values for both strain and dislocation density were recorded at the 0 kGy dose (ε = 0.0064 and σ = 0.0036 × 1012cm−2). Elemental analysis (EDS) indicated that reduction processes occurred depending on the radiation dose, with the highest reduction observed in the sample irradiated at 25 kGy. Studies indicate that gamma radiation can modify the structural and physical properties of the AgNWs/GO nanocomposite.

Prediction of thermodynamic properties oflanthanide/transition metal alloys by deep learning

The utilization of machine learning, especially deep learning, in solving materials science issues bring an opportunity to accelerate the development process of new materials and draw the attention of researchers all over the world. In this work, we present our study on applying deep neural networks to represent and predict thermodynamic quantities including formation energy, convex hull distance, and to recognize potential thermodynamical stabile materials. We employ our novel material descriptor, named orbital field matrix (OFM), to determine the feature vectors for materials. The OFM descriptors were developed based on the information of valence electron configuration and the Voronoi analysis of the atomic structures of materials. Our experiments show that deep neural networks can accurately predict formation energyand convex hull distancewith the mean absolute error around 0,124eV/atom and 0,105 eV/atom, respectively. In addition,the classification neural network can yield an accuracy of 92% in distinguishing the stable and unstable materials.

Electromigration Effects in Overcurrent PVC-Insulated Copper Wire: Failure and Deformation Impacts

Electromigration is a critical issue in materials science and electrical engineering, significantly impacting the reliability and efficiency of electrical systems. This study investigates the electromigration behavior of PVC-insulated copper wires under various overcurrent conditions, focusing on material degradation and electrical performance. Copper cables, identified as 046620.3 Eterna CU/PVC 1.5 mm2, were subjected to currents ranging from 0 to 110 A. The mean time to failure (MTTF) was calculated using Black’s equation, revealing a sharp decline in MTTF with increasing current density. Surface morphology analysis using SEM showed the formation of voids and hillocks at higher currents, indicating severe electromigration damage. XRF analysis demonstrated significant changes in the elemental composition, particularly a reduction in copper content and an increase in chlorine and other elements, suggesting degradation of the PVC insulation. FTIR spectroscopy revealed substantial chemical changes in the PVC material, especially under extreme overcurrent conditions, highlighting dehydrochlorination and carbonyl group formation. There is a clear relationship between overcurrent conditions and electromigration phenomena, as evidenced by the observed damage to surface morphology, changes in elemental composition, and alterations in the chemical structure of PVC. The mechanisms and causes of electromigration are explained comprehensively in this work, illustrating how increased overcurrent accelerates the electromigration process, leading to the formation of voids and hillocks in the copper conductor. This damage is accompanied by a significant reduction in copper content and an increase in chlorine levels, indicating the degradation of PVC insulation. FTIR spectra further confirmed these findings by showing chemical changes such as dehydrochlorination and carbonyl group formation under high current stress. The MTTF values reflect the severity of these impacts, with samples exposed to higher currents showing drastically reduced lifespans. For instance, samples subjected to 100 A and 110 A currents exhibited MTTF values of 0.2 minutes and 0.004 minutes, respectively.

An Automatized Simulation Workflow for Powder Pressing Simulations Using SimStack

Automated computational workflows are a powerful concept that can improve the usability and reproducibility of simulation and data processing approaches. Although used very successfully in bioinformatics, workflow environments in materials science are currently commonly applied in the field of atomistic simulations. This work showcases the integration of a discrete element method (DEM) simulation of powder pressing in the convenient SimStack workflow environment. For this purpose, a Workflow active Node (WaNo) was developed to generate input scripts for the DEM solver using LIGGGHTS Open Source Discrete Element Method Particle Simulation code. Combining different WaNos in the SimStack framework makes it possible to build workflows and loop over different simulation or evaluation conditions. The functionality of the workflows is explained, and the added user value is discussed. The procedure presented here is an example and template for many other simulation methods and issues in materials science and engineering.

Additionally, the paper explores a diverse array of models and classifications of HE, offering a structured framework for comprehending its complexities. These models play a crucial role in forecasting, preventing, and mitigating HE across various domains, ranging from industrial settings to critical infrastructure.

AbstractThis special issue of Materials Science and Engineering Technology (Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik) contains selected papers presented at the 16th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting (ACE‐X 2023) held at the Aquila Atlantis Hotel in Crete during the period 3rd–7th July, 2023. The included papers are related to advanced structured materials, their design and analysis, and advanced manufacturing and processing techniques.

Magnetic anisotropy driven by ligand in 4d transition-metal oxide SrRuO3

The origin of magnetic anisotropy in magnetic compounds is a longstanding issue in materials science, and nonmagnetic ligand ions are considered to contribute little to magnetic anisotropy. Here, we introduce the concept of ligand-driven magnetic anisotropy in a complex transition-metal oxide. We conducted x-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopies at the Ru and O edges in the 4d ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3. Systematic variation of the sample thickness in the range of ≤10 nm allowed us to control the localization of Ru 4d t2g states, which affects the magnetic coupling between the Ru and O ions. We observe that the orbital magnetic moment of the ligand O 2p orbitals induced through the charge transfer to the Ru 4d t2g states becomes anisotropic first, and the anisotropic magnetic moment of Ru and, therefore, the entire system is induced via magnetic coupling between Ru 4d and O 2p orbitals.

Role of transition metals in coinage metal nanoclusters for the remediation of toxic dyes in aqueous systems.

A difficult issue in chemistry and materials science is to create metal compounds with well-defined components. Metal nanoclusters, particularly those of coinage groups (Cu, Ag, and Au), have received considerable research interest in recent years owing to the availability of atomic-level precision via joint experimental and theoretical methods, thus revealing the mechanisms in diverse nano-catalysts and functional materials. The textile sector significantly contributes to wastewater containing pollutants such as dyes and chemical substances. Textile and fabric manufacturing account for about 7 × 105 tons of wastewater annually. Approximately one thousand tons of dyes used in textile processing and finishing has been recorded as being discharged into natural streams and water bodies. Owing to the widespread environmental concerns, research has been conducted to develop absorbents that are capable of removing contaminants and heavy metals from water bodies using low-cost technology. Considering this idea, we reviewed coinage metal nanoclusters for azo and cationic dye degradation. Fluorometric and colorimetric techniques are used for dye degradation using coinage metal nanoclusters. Few reports are available on dye degradation using silver nanoclusters; and some of them are discussed in detailed herein to demonstrate the synergistic effect of gold and silver in dye degradation. Mostly, the Rhodamine B dye is degraded using coinage metals. Silver nanoclusters take less time for degradation than gold and copper nanoclusters. Mostly, H2O2 is used for degradation in gold nanoclusters. Still, all coinage metal nanoclusters have been used for the degradation due to suitable HOMO-LUMO gap, and the adsorption of a dye onto the surface of the catalyst results in the exchange of electrons and holes, which leads to the oxidation and reduction of the adsorbed dye molecule. Compared to other coinage metal nanoclusters, Ag/g-C3N4 nanoclusters displayed an excellent degradation rate constant with the dye Rhodamine B (0.0332 min-1). The behavior of doping transition metals in coinage metal nanoclusters is also reviewed herein. In addition, we discuss the mechanistic grounds for degradation, the fate of metal nanoclusters, anti-bacterial activity of nanoclusters, toxicity of dyes, and sensing of dyes.

Potential of Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry (KEMS) for Energy Materials Science

The determination of valuable thermodynamic data for materials at elevated temperatures is a very important issue in Materials Science. This can be achieved by the elucidation of vaporization processes with mass spectrometric techniques.Knudsen Effusion Mass Spectrometry provides the identification of gaseous species present above condensed phases and permits the determination of their partial pressures up to a total pressure of 200 Pa.The key for establishing model calculations using DG minimization tools like among others FactSage, Pandat or Thermocalc is the knowledge of the thermodynamic data of molecules and compounds. This includes the partial pressures of gaseous species, the standard enthalpies and entropies of formation of gaseous and condensed phases as well as their enthalpies and entropies of mixing and the knowledge of phases and chemical compounds which are formed upon reactions.The method will be described and examples and an insight will be given how basic thermodynamic data are derived with the above mentioned method for the incorporation into thermodynamic databases. Examples of investigations carried out in our lab will be given.The number of groups worldwide using this advanced technology has been shrinking during the last decades. Therefore, we are pleased to announce the setup of a completely new designed instrument in our laboratory which can determine data with higher precision and better resolution.The new set up will be presented as well.

High nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets for electrochemical sensing of malachite green

The facile fabrication of doped carbon materials with multiple functions has been a challenging issue in materials science. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets with high doping level (32.05 wt%) were obtained by one-step calcination with urea and polyaniline as precursors. The presence of abundant edges and crimp, and the increase of the proportion of pyrrolic and graphitic nitrogen promote the exposure of the active site of the doped nanosheets. These structural advantages result in a favourable electrochemical response to organic pollutant malachite green. The linear range of detection of malachite green is 1 ∼ 10 μmol/L and the limit of detection is 13.2 nmol/L by differential pulse voltammetry electrochemical sensor constructed with high nitrogen- doped carbon nanosheets. The electrochemical sensor showed a satisfactory recovery rate for malachite green detection in actual tap water sample. This work offers a constructive solution for the facile fabrication and chemical sensor application of doped two-dimensional carbon-based materials.

Robust nitrogen-rich covalent polymeric networks for ultra-efficient and selective palladium capture under harsh conditions

Selective capture of palladium (Pd) from high-level liquid waste (HLLW) is one of the frontier issues in materials science in order to alleviate the Pd resource scarcity and guarantee the safe disposal of radioactive wastes. However, this task remains a great challenge in HLLW treatment associated with low capacity, poor selectivity, and limited stability of materials in strongly acidic and radioactive environments. Here we conquer this challenge by designing covalent polymeric networks (CPNs) equipped with abundant bidentate (CPN-1) or tridentate (CPN-2) nitrogen-rich moieties as specific nano-traps for Pd(II). These CPNs are constructed through efficient and facile click reactions, among which CPN-1 bearing plentiful pyridinyl-triazolyl moieties sets a new record for Pd(II) uptake capacity (535 mg g−1), notably surpassing all the reported materials for Pd(II) separation from HNO3 solutions to date. Moreover, CPN-1 features additional attractive merits including good reusability, feasible dynamic column separation, outstanding Pd(II) selectivity over 17 coexisting cations, and excellent stability under highly acidic and radioactive conditions, making it highly promising for practical applications. This work provides a facile way to customize CPN adsorbents with superior performance and highlights the great potential of the prepared materials for metal capture applications.

Threefold coordinated germanium in a GeO2 melt

The local structure around germanium is a fundamental issue in material science and geochemistry. In the prevailing viewpoint, germanium in GeO2 melt is coordinated by at least four oxygen atoms. However, the viewpoint has been debated for decades due to several unexplained bands present in the GeO2 melt Raman spectra. Using in situ Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) computation, we have found a [GeOØ2]n (Ø = bridging oxygen) chain structure in a GeO2 melt. In this structure, the germanium atom is coordinated by three oxygen atoms and interacts weakly with two neighbouring non-bridging oxygen atoms. The bonding nature of the chain has been analyzed on the basis of the computational electronic structure. The results may settle down the longstanding debate on the GeO2 melt structure and modify our view on germanate chemistry.

Advanced engineering materials and materials processing technologies in dental implant and prosthetic treatment with clinical cases

The article deals with materials science issues concerning the application areas in dental engineering. The monograph aims to present the results of the Author’s work against the background of general achievements, indicating the engineering aspects of dental implant-prosthetic treatment. They include clinical cases, most often concerning complete edentulism, with a detailed discussion of the methodology of the material, technological, and structural design of dental prosthetic restorations, especially the impact of additive manufacturing conditions and surface engineering technology on the mechanical properties and structure of prosthetic restorations.The monograph covering the engineering and technical activities of implant prosthetic treatment includes the Author's aspects concerning the development of the methodology of computer-aided design of dental prosthetic restorations and surgical guides ensuring their correct installation in the oral cavity of patients, along with virtual modelling of treatment plans, modelling of the load status of individual elements of implant-prosthetic systems, development of the methodology of computer-aided production of elements of the prosthetic restoration system as well as implants and implant-scaffolds with the use of milling technology in CNC centres and additive manufacturing by selective laser sintering, the results of research on the influence of additive manufacturing conditions on the structure and properties of titanium and its alloy Ti6Al4V and cobalt alloy Co25Cr5W5MoSi containing studies of biochemical properties for applications for implant-prosthetic purposes in dentistry, the results of tests on the influence of ALD atomic layer conditions on the structure and surface properties of metals and their alloys used in implant-prosthetic treatment in dentistry and the results of tests of prosthetic fillings used in the treatment of Tooth decay.The basis for all the described achievements of the monograph are the comprehensive results of research related to the study of the structure and properties of engineering materials, especially titanium and cobalt alloys used in dentistry, subjected to additive manufacturing using the Selective Laser Sintering SLS method and surface treatment using the Atomic Layer Deposition ALD method, as a domain of materials engineering, in the context of the Industry Integrated Idea 3xI 4 model. 0/5.0 and the 6xE 6 Expectation Principle, which there is a paradigm for materials science. What is important in the approach are the results of biological tests of materials produced in such a way, leading to numerous applications in the Author’s clinical practice in cooperation with dentists and the development of a general concept of a research, design, and production centre for prosthetic restorations and virtual acquisition of diagnostic data from cooperating dental clinics.The article is a monographic study referring to numerous of the Author’s publications, patents, and presentations at scientific conferences and invention fairs, in which very extensive source information is provided concerning both a very large number of literature items and extensive factual material, including the results of materiallographic studies and descriptions of clinical cases, although this study also presents numerous aspects not yet published in any previous works.The study presents, among others, detailed prosthetic and implant-prosthetic solutions implemented by the Author of the study and successfully used by patients. Although the study is formally qualified in the engineering and technical sciences in materials engineering, it has strong links with biomedical engineering and the applied area of interventional dentistry.Numerous original publications, patent solutions, completed projects, and awards at the International Innovation Fair discussed in the monograph, as well as clinical experience related to the treatment of thousands of dental patients in our Author’s clinic, confirm the originality of the approach and indicate the innovative nature of the achievements presented in the article so far. Many years of experience have led to the launch of a constantly developed production centre for prosthetic restorations and a virtual structure for obtaining diagnostic data from cooperating dental clinics. The article addresses scientists dealing with materials engineering applied in interventional dentistry and dental engineers in practice dealing with this issue.

Hetero-Deformation Induced Hardening in a CoCrFeNiMn High-Entropy Alloy

One of the most important issues in materials science is to overcome the strength–ductility trade-off in engineering alloys. The formation of heterogeneous and complex microstructures is a useful approach to achieving this purpose. In this investigation, a CoCrFeNiMn high-entropy alloy was processed via cold rolling followed by post-deformation annealing over a temperature range of 650–750 °C, which led to a wide range of grain sizes. Annealing at 650 °C led to the formation of a heterogeneous structure containing recrystallized areas with ultrafine and fine grains and non-recrystallized areas with an average size of ~75 μm. The processed material showed strength–ductility synergy with very high strengths of over ~1 GPa and uniform elongations of over 12%. Different deformation mechanisms such as dislocation slip, deformation twinning and hetero-deformation-induced hardening were responsible for achieving this mechanical property. Increasing the annealing temperature up to 700 °C facilitated the acquisition of bimodal grain size distributions of ~1.5 and ~6 μm, and the heterogeneous structure was eliminated via annealing at higher temperatures, which led to a significant decrease in strength.

This special issue of Materials Science and Engineering Technology (Materialwissenschaft und Werkstofftechnik) contains selected papers presented at the 15th International Conference on Advanced Computational Engineering and Experimenting (ACE−X 2022) held at the Hilton Florence Metropole hotel during the period 3rd – 7th July, 2022. The included papers are related to advanced structured materials, their design and analysis, and advanced manufacturing and processing techniques. The goal of the conference was to provide a unique opportunity to exchange information, present the latest results as well as review the relevant issues on engineering mechanics research today. Young scientists were especially encouraged to attend the conference presenting first results and to establish international networks with well-known scientists. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the conference was organized in hybrid mode, which means that some presentations were live streamed, some were recorded, and other were presented at the conference venue. More than 233 papers were submitted by researchers from 33 countries. The organizers wish to thank the authors and delegates for their participation and cooperation, which made the conference possible. Polyamorphism mediated by nanoscale incipient concentration wave uncovering hidden amorphous intermediate state with ultrahigh modulus in nanostructured metallic glass

Comprehending the pressure-/temperature-induced structural transition in glasses, as one of the most fascinating issues in material science, is far from being well understood. Here, we report novel polyamorphic transitions in a Cu-based metallic glass (MG) with apparent nanoscale structural heterogeneity relating to proper Y addition. The low-density MG compresses continuously with increasing pressure, and then a compression plateau appears after ∼8.1 GPa, evolving into an intermediate state with an ultrahigh bulk modulus of ∼467 GPa. It then transforms to a high-density MG with significantly decreased structural heterogeneity above ∼14.1 GPa. Three-dimensional atom probe tomography reveals concentration waves of Cu/Zr elements with an average wavelength of ∼5–6 nm, which promote the formation of interconnected ringlike networks composed of Cu-rich and Zr-rich dual-glass domains at nanometer scale. Our experimental and simulation results indicate that steplike polyamorphism may stem from synergic effects of the abnormal compression of the Zr–Zr bond length at the atomic scale and the interplay between the applied pressure and incipient concentration waves (Cu and Zr) at several nanometer scales. The present work provides new insights into polyamorphism in glasses and contributes to the development of high-performance amorphous materials by high-pressure nanostructure engineering.

Excited-State THz Vibrations in Aggregates of PtII Complexes Contribute to the Enhancement of Near-Infrared Emission Efficiencies.

The exploration of deactivation mechanisms for near-infrared(NIR)-emissive organic molecules has been a key issue in chemistry, materials science and molecular biology. In this study, based on transient absorption spectroscopy and transient grating photoluminescence spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the aggregated PtII complex 4H (efficient NIR emitter) exhibits collective out-of-plane motions with a frequency of 32 cm-1 (0.96 THz) in the excited states. Importantly, similar THz characteristics were also observed in analogous PtII complexes with prominent NIR emission efficiency. The conservation of THz motions enables excited-state deactivation to proceed along low-frequency vibrational coordinates, contributing to the suppression of nonradiative decay and remarkable NIR emission. These novel results highlight the significance of excited-state vibrations in nonradiative processes, which serve as a benchmark for improving device performance.

In this study, based on transient absorption spectroscopy and transient grating photoluminescence spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the aggregated PtII complex 4H (efficient NIR emitter) exhibits collective out‐of‐plane motions with a frequency of 32 cm−1 (0.96 THz) in the excited states. Importantly, similar THz characteristics were also observed in analogous PtII complexes with prominent NIR emission efficiency. The conservation of THz motions enables excited‐state deactivation to proceed along low‐frequency vibrational coordinates, contributing to the suppression of nonradiative decay and remarkable NIR emission. These novel results highlight the significance of excited‐state vibrations in nonradiative processes, which serve as a benchmark for improving device performance.

Improving the Performance of Paper-Based Dipole Antennas by Electromagnetic Flux Concentration.

One of the essential issues in modern advanced materials science is to design and manufacture flexible devices, in particular in the framework of the Internet of Things (IoT), to improve integration into applications. An antenna is an essential component of wireless communication modules and, in addition to flexibility, compact dimensions, printability, low cost, and environmentally friendlier production strategies, also represent relevant functional challenges. Concerning the antenna's performance, the optimization of the reflection coefficient and maximum range remain the key goals. In this context, this work reports on screen-printed paper@Ag-based antennas and optimizes their functional properties, with improvements in the reflection coefficient (S11) from -8 to -56 dB and maximum transmission range from 208 to 256 m, with the introduction of a PVA-Fe3O4@Ag magnetoactive layer into the antenna's structure. The incorporated magnetic nanostructures allow the optimization of the functional features of antennas with possible applications ranging from broadband arrays to portable wireless devices. In parallel, the use of printing technologies and sustainable materials represents a step toward more sustainable electronics.
