Revision of Trigastrotheca Cameron (Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Braconinae) with descriptions of 13 new species.

The Old World braconine wasp genus Trigastrotheca Cameron is revised. The genus is recorded from the island of Madagascar for the first time based on two new species, T.christianhenrichi Quicke & Butcher, sp. nov. and T.formosa Quicke & Friedman, sp. nov. Trigastrothecagriffini Quicke, sp. nov. is described from Australia; T.aethiopica Quicke & Friedman, sp. nov. is described from Ethiopia; T.braeti Quicke & Butcher, sp. nov. is described from Congo; T.simba van Noort, sp. nov. is described from Tanzania; T.freidbergi Quicke & Friedman, sp. nov., T.carinata Ranjith, sp. nov., T.flava Ranjith, sp. nov. and T.similidentata Ranjith, sp. nov. are described from India; T.khaoyaiensis Quicke & Butcher, sp. nov., T.naniensis Quicke & Butcher, sp. nov., and T.sublobata Quicke & Butcher, sp. nov. are described from Thailand. Trigastrothecatridentata is recorded from Thailand for the first time. A putative female of T.sureeratae is described for the first time. Acroceriliatricolor Quicke & Ingram, 1993 is transferred into Trigastrotheca, as T.acroceropsis nom. nov. A key is provided for the identification of species.

Aye-aye middle finger kinematic modeling and motion tracking during tap-scanning

The aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis) is a nocturnal lemur native to the island of Madagascar with a unique thin middle finger. Its slender third digit has a remarkably specific adaptation, allowing them to perform tap-scanning to locate small cavities beneath tree bark and extract wood-boring larvae from it. As an exceptional active acoustic actuator, this finger makes an aye-aye’s biological system an attractive model for pioneering Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) methods and robotic systems. Despite the important aspects of the topic in the aye-aye’s unique foraging and its potential contribution to the engineering sensory, little is known about the mechanism and dynamics of this unique finger. This paper used a motion-tracking approach for the aye-aye’s middle finger using simultaneous video graphic capture. To mimic the motion, a two-link robot arm model is designed to reproduce the trajectory. Kinematics formulations were proposed to derive the motion of the middle finger using the Lagrangian method. In addition, a hardware model was developed to simulate the aye-aye’s finger motion. To validate the model, different motion states such as trajectory paths and joint angles, were compared. The simulation results indicate the kinematics of the model were consistent with the actual finger movement. This model is used to understand the aye-aye’s unique tap-scanning process for pioneering new tap-testing NDE strategies for various inspection applications.

The economic costs of malaria in pregnancy: evidence from four sub-Saharan countries.

Background Malaria in pregnancy is a major public health problem in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), which imposes a significant economic burden. We provide evidence on the costs of malaria care in pregnancy to households and the health system in four high-burden countries in SSA. Methods Household and health system economic costs associated with malaria control in pregnancy were estimated in selected areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Madagascar (MDG), Mozambique (MOZ) and Nigeria (NGA). An exit survey was administered to 2,031 pregnant women when leaving the antenatal care (ANC) clinic from October 2020 to June 2021. Women reported the direct and indirect costs associated to malaria prevention and treatment in pregnancy. To estimate health system costs, we interviewed health workers from 133 randomly selected health facilities. Costs were estimated using an ingredients-based approach. Results Average household costs of malaria prevention per pregnancy were USD6.33 in DRC, USD10.06 in MDG, USD15.03 in MOZ and USD13.33 in NGA. Household costs of treating an episode of uncomplicated/complicated malaria were USD22.78/USD46 in DRC, USD16.65/USD35.65 in MDG, USD30.54/USD61.25 in MOZ and USD18.92/USD44.71 in NGA, respectively. Average health system costs of malaria prevention per pregnancy were USD10.74 in DRC, USD16.95 in MDG, USD11.17 in MOZ and USD15.64 in NGA. Health system costs associated with treating an episode of uncomplicated/complicated malaria were USD4.69/USD101.41 in DRC, USD3.61/USD63.33 in MDG, USD4.68/USD83.70 in MOZ and USD4.09/USD92.64 in NGA. These estimates resulted in societal costs of malaria prevention and treatment per pregnancy of USD31.72 in DRC, USD29.77 in MDG, USD31.98 in MOZ and USD46.16 in NGA. Conclusions Malaria in pregnancy imposes a high economic burden on households and the health system. Findings emphasize the importance of investing in effective strategies that improve access to malaria control and reduce the burden of the infection in pregnancy.

Molecular phylogenetics of the sucking louse genus Lemurpediculus (Insecta: Phthiraptera), ectoparasites of lemurs, with descriptions of three new species.

Sucking lice live in intimate association with their hosts and often display a high degree of host specificity. The present study investigated sucking lice of the genus Lemurpediculus from six mouse lemur (Microcebus) and two dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus) species endemic to the island of Madagascar, considered a biodiversity hotspot. Louse phylogenetic trees were created based on cytochrome C oxidase subunit I (COI), elongation factor 1α (EF1α) and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequences. While clustering according to host species was generally observed for COI and ITS1, suggesting high host specificity of the examined lice, EF1α sequences alone did not distinguish between lice of different Microcebus species, possibly due to rather recent divergence. As bootstrap support for basal tree structure was rather low, further data are necessary to resolve the evolutionary history of louse-mouse lemur associations. Three new species of sucking lice are described: Lemurpediculus zimmermanni sp. Nov. From Microcebus ravelobensis, Lemurpediculus gerpi sp.nov. from Microcebus gerpi, and Lemurpediculus tsimanampesotsae sp. nov. from Microcebus griseorufus. These new species are compared with all known congeneric species and identifying features are illustrated for all known species of Lemurpediculus.

A Lexical database of Malagsay adjectives

This paper deals with an electronic resource under construction. The objective is to construct a lexical database of Malagasy adjectives. Malagasy is an agglutinative language of Austronesian origin, spoken in the African island of Madagascar. The method used to construct the resource is adapted from the approach of Gross (1989) to electronic dictionaries. The content of the resource is based on linguistic analysis and encoded so as to be used by language-processing software. However, care has been taken that all linguistic information is easily readable and updatable. The resource allows for morphological analysis and generation of adjectives, removing obstacles to the construction of computer applications to process the Malagasy language. The originality of this paper also comes from our proposal of a distinction between adjectives in the usual sense and adjectival forms of other parts of speech.

Out of Madagascar, repeatedly: The phylogenetics and biogeography of Dombeyoideae (Malvaceae s.l.)

Dispersals have been shown to be critical to the evolution of the long isolated but megadiverse flora of Madagascar and the surrounding islands of the western Indian Ocean, but we are just beginning to understand the directionality of these dispersals. With more than half of its species occurring in the western Indian Ocean region (WIOR), the paleotropical subfamily Dombeyoideae provides a particularly useful case study through which to better understand the biogeography of the WIOR, and yet its biogeography is poorly understood. Here we sampled six molecular markers from all 20 genera in the Dombeyoideae to reconstruct the most complete phylogeny to date for the subfamily. From this, divergence times, calibrated with three fossils (two dombeyoid, one malvoid), and ancestral range estimations were hypothesized. Biogeographic stochastic mapping (BSM) analyses on the maximum clade credibility tree were completed and compared to BSM analyses on 1,000 trees randomly sampled from the posterior distribution of trees resulting from the dating analysis. We found the Dombeyoideae crown node diverged ca. 53 million years ago out of a broad ancestral range involving all three major areas of its distribution: Madagascar, Africa, and Asia. The majority of diversification and dispersals in the subfamily occurred within the last ca. 10 million years, mostly from the Pliocene onwards. There were roughly five dispersals from Madagascar to Africa (and only one in reverse), at least six from Madagascar to surrounding islands of the WIOR (Mascarenes and Comoros), and one dispersal from Madagascar to Asia (and ca. 1 in reverse). Other long-distance dispersals included one from Africa to St. Helena and one from Africa to Australasia, both from within the most widespread clade, the Cheirolaena & allies clade, and one dispersal from Asia to Africa. Critically, the Dombeyoideae provide strong evidence for considering the island of Madagascar as a source for the colonization of continents, as well as the surrounding islands of the WIOR. Furthermore, narrow sympatry was a key process in the evolution of the subfamily, particularly in Madagascar and the Mascarenes.

Filarial infections in lemurs:Evidence for a wide geographical distribution and low host specificity among lemur species.

The relevance of emerging infectious diseases continues to grow worldwide as human activities increasingly extend into formerly remote natural areas. This is particularly noticeable on the island of Madagascar. As closest relatives to humans on the island, lemurs are of particular relevance as a potential origin of zoonotic pathogen spillover. Knowledge of pathogens circulating in lemur populations is, however, very poor. Particularly little is known about lemur hemoparasites. To infer host range, ecological and geographic spread of the recently described hemoparasitic nematode Lemurfilaria lemuris in northwestern Madagascar, a total of 942 individuals of two mouse lemur species (Microcebus murinus [n = 207] and Microcebus ravelobensis [n = 433]) and two rodent species (the endemic Eliurus myoxinus [n = 118] and the invasive Rattus rattus [n = 184]) were captured in two fragmented forest landscapes (Ankarafantsika National Park and Mariarano Classified Forest) in northwestern Madagascar for blood sample examination. No protozoan hemoparasites were detected by microscopic blood smear screening. Microfilaria were present in 1.0% (2/207) of M. murinus and 2.1% (9/433) of M. ravelobensis blood samples but not in rodent samples. Internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS-1) sequences were identical to an unnamed Onchocercidae species previously described to infect a larger lemur species, Propithecus verreauxi, about 650 km further south. In contrast to expectations, L. lemuris was not detected. The finding of a pathogen in a distantly related host species, at a considerable geographic distance from the location of its original detection, instead of a microfilaria species previously described for one of the studied host species in the same region, illustrates our low level of knowledge of lemur hemoparasites, their host ranges, distribution, modes of transmission, and their zoonotic potential. Our findings shall stimulate new research that will be of relevance for both conservation medicine and human epidemiology.

Ethnopharmacological review of vinca plant for anticancer activity

The strive of this assessment shows that Vinca rosea, many obviously grown vegetation round us which can be used for medicinal purposes. It has many known names like vinca Rosea, Madagascar periwinkle, vibrant eyes, Cape periwinkle, graveyard plant, old maid, crimson periwinkle, rose periwinkle myrtle. Ayurveda is the Indian conventional device of medication which focuses on the scientific capability of plant life. Catharanthus roseus is one plant recognized nicely in Ayurveda. It is known for its antitumour, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and antimutagenic effects. It is an evergreen plant first originated from islands of Madagascar. The flowers can also range in color from red to pink and leaves are organized in opposite pairs. It produces nearly 130 alkaloids especially ajmalcine, vinceine, resperine, vincristine, vinblastine and raubasin. Vincristine and vinblastine are used for the treatment of various types of cancer such as Hodgkin’s disease, breast cancer, skin cancer and lymphoblastic leukemia. It has high medicinal values which need to be explored considerably. This ethnopharmacological review deals with anticancer activities and pharmacognostic study of Vinca plant.

The loss of biodiversity in Madagascar is contemporaneous with major demographic events

Only 400km off the coast of East Africa, the island of Madagascar is one of the last large land masses to have been colonized by humans. While many questions surround the human occupation of Madagascar, recent studies raise the question of human impact on endemic biodiversity and landscape transformation. Previous genetic and linguistic analyses have shown that the Malagasy population has emerged from an admixture that happened during the last millennium, between Bantu-speaking African populations and Austronesian-speaking Asian populations. By studying the sharing of chromosome segments between individuals (IBD determination), local ancestry information, and simulated genetic data, we inferred that the Malagasy ancestral Asian population was isolated for more than 1,000 years with an effective size of just a few hundred individuals. This isolation ended around 1,000 years before present (BP) by admixture with a small African population. Around the admixture time, there was a rapid demographic expansion due to intrinsic population growth of the newly admixed population, which coincides with extensive changes in Madagascar's landscape and the extinction of all endemic large-bodied vertebrates. Therefore, our approach can provide new insights into past human demography and associated impacts on ecosystems.

Avaratra gen. nov. (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Flatidae) from northern Madagascar endemism centre.

A new monospecific genus of flatid planthoppers (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Flatidae), Avaratra gen. nov., is described for Avaratra spinifemora sp. nov. (type species) from the island of Madagascar. Habitus, male and female external and internal genital structures of the new species are illustrated. Avaratra spinifemora gen. et sp. nov. is endemic to Madagascar and probably represent a species specialized to dry costal forest, the vegetation widely distributed in Madagascar, gradually extending with the climate change. Taking into account a few data and poor collecting in these areas, particularly for planthoppers, it is possible that the species occurs in other similar places along the west northern coast.

Spatial Analysis of the Occurrence and Spread of Wildfires in Southwest Madagascar

The island of Madagascar, located in the southern hemisphere between the equator and the Tropic of Capricorn in the Indian Ocean, 450 km from the African continent, is particularly affected by wildfires. The vegetation of the phytogeographic Western Domain of the island consists largely of savannas, wooded grassland, and secondary grassland, maintained by the repeated action of fire operating each year on a seasonal cycle. Rural populations employ fire to manage land use. Depending on the burning practice and the environment in which the fires happen, the impacts vary. This paper supplement the studies that have so far located and quantified wildfires by taking into account their different behaviors, particularly their spread. We analyzed the modalities of the relationship between the two fire products, active fire and burned area, derived from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to establish a typology based on fire spread patterns. We identified three general patterns of fire behaviors, as well as their locations in the studied area. Spatial analysis of this patterns enabled us to understand spatial logics better. Type 1 fires are the least frequently observed and have many active fires, but little or no burned area. Type 2 fires are the most common and have areas that burn like a mosaic. Type 3 fires are observed slightly less frequently than the previous type and have few active fires and large burned areas. An inter-annual analysis reveals the spatial stability or variability of these fire types.

Review on Vinca : Catharanthus Roseus

Ayurveda is a conventional Indian medicine system focused on the power of herbal medicine. Catharanthus roseus is a well-recognized plant in Ayurveda. It is known for its antitumor, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and antimutagenic effects. It is an evergreen plant that originated on the islands of Madagascar. The flowers can vary in color from pink to purple and the leaves are arranged in opposing pears. It produces about 130 alkaloids mainly ajmalcine, vinceine, resperine, vincristine, vinblastine and raubasin. Vincristine and vinblastine are used to treat various types of cancer such as Hodgkin's disease, breast cancer, skin cancer and lymphoblastic leukemia. It is an endangered species and needs to be preserved using techniques such as micropropagation. It has high therapeutic value that needs to be considered in more detail.

Typifications of ten names related to Senna ser. Interglandulosae (Leguminosae, Caesalpinioideae)

Senna Mill. (Caesalpinioideae-Leguminosae) comprises approximately 350 species distributed in the Americas, Asia, Africa, Madagascar, Australia, and Pacific Islands. It is a taxonomically complex group and, for more than two centuries, Senna was considered part of Cassia L. The segregation of Cassia, belonging to the subtribe Cassiinae H.S. Irwin & Barneby, into three distinct genera (Cassia senso stricto, Chamaecrista [L.] Moench, and Senna) was based on floral and fruit morphologies. In this work we lectotypified ten names related to the Senna ser. Interglandulosae (Benth.) H.S. Irwin & Barneby (Cassia acuruensis Benth., C. aversiflora Herb., C. centijuga Wawra, C. holwayana Rose, C. huancabambae Harms, C. lindleyana Gardner, C. mutissiana Kunth, C. selloi G. Don, C. semifalcata Vell., and C. verrucosa Vogel) and designate an epitype for C. aversiflora.

Names of Contemporary Wooden Boats of Coastal East Africa: Origins and Meanings

ABSTRACT The coast of eastern Africa, commonly referred to as the Swahili coast, has a rich artisanal heritage of boats — both in their building and use. This iconic history is marked by the presence of various boat types that have historically been used for fishing and transporting people and cargo between coastal settlements (of eastern Africa), the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, Mafia, Comoros, Madagascar, and other distant parts of the Indian Ocean world. Currently, the sailing boats such as the double-outrigger logboat (ngalawa), various plank-built craft, and several other types, line the shores of Tanzania, Kenya, Mozambique, Somalia and the islands of Zanzibar, Mafia and the Comoros. Some of these boats, almost all locally built, have names, decorations, and engravings. However, the boats’ names, decorations and engravings alongside the conveyed message(s) have remained undocumented. Thus, taking a maritime-heritage perspective, and by focusing on the nineteenth century historic port town of Bagamoyo in Tanzania, this paper documents the boats’ names and the messages they carry.

Island Identity in the Malagasy Bible Translation

This exploration of island identity considers the island of Madagascar, not as an ideology or mythology, but as a country with its distinctive geographical situation and environment, a reality which shapes the culture, language, and identity of its people. After highlighting different aspects of island identity in the context of Madagascar, the paper explores how this is reflected in the language and culture, and in Bible translation.

The genetic history of Mayotte and Madagascar cattle breeds mirrors the complex pattern of human exchanges in Western Indian Ocean.

Despite their central economic and cultural role, the origin of cattle populations living in Indian Ocean islands still remains poorly documented. Here, we unravel the demographic and adaptive histories of the extant Zebus from the Mayotte and Madagascar islands using high-density SNP genotyping data. We found that these populations are very closely related and both display a predominant indicine ancestry. They diverged in the 16th century at the arrival of European people who transformed the trade network in the area. Their common ancestral cattle population originates from an admixture between an admixed African zebu population and an Indian zebu that occurred around the 12th century at the time of the earliest contacts between human African populations of the Swahili corridor and Austronesian people from Southeast Asia in Comoros and Madagascar. A steep increase in the estimated population sizes from the beginning of the 16th to the 17th century coincides with the expansion of the cattle trade. By carrying out genome scans for recent selection in the two cattle populations from Mayotte and Madagascar, we identified sets of candidate genes involved in biological functions (cancer, skin structure, and UV-protection, nervous system and behavior, organ development, metabolism, and immune response) broadly representative of the physiological adaptation to tropical conditions. Overall, the origin of the cattle populations from Western Indian Ocean islands mirrors the complex history of human migrations and trade in this area.

The “First climate change famine” from 2017–2022?- An analysis of the economics and geography of great SUD drought of Madagascar (1901–2021)

Islands of the world are facing unprecedented impacts of climate change. Rising temperatures and consequent increasing sea levels have questioned the very existence of these islands and forward a severe threat to their resources. In this regard, the island of Madagascar is not an exception. Southern Madagascar or Great Sud is facing an unprecedented drought which has exacerbated in the last four years, becoming pronounced in 2021 and 2022. It has landed the part of the country into emergency now and has converted the region into a dust bowl. The situation is turning to what has been described as the “first climate change famine ” by the UN and the year 2022 is observing a similarity of conditions. The current examination attempts to examine the question whether the catastrophe is human or climate induced or both? This has been attempted through a detailed examination of rainfall patterns and trends and an inspection of economic and political scenario of the country. Our analysis indicates that rainfall does exhibit a fluctuating trend in the region, but there definitely exist other factors than geography in creating this precarious situation for the country.
