Multiculturalism: Unveiling Intercultural Communicative Competence in Modern Islamic Education

This research explores integrating multiculturalism and Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) in modern Islamic education. This research method is a qualitative study of existing literature. This research uses a literature review approach to explore the definition and dimensions of ICC, the challenges and opportunities in its integration into Islamic education, and the impact of multiculturalism on forming the Islamic education paradigm using thematic analysis of the Miles and Huberman model. Findings suggest a different understanding of ICC, which includes cultural awareness, cross-cultural sensitivity, and adaptive capacity. Despite efforts, challenges like resistance to Western influence and conceptual barriers still exist in integrating ICC into Islamic education. Promising practices, including collaborative approaches between Islamic and non-Islamic educational institutions, show potential for increased integration. Multiculturalism significantly influences educational approaches, offering opportunities to foster cross-cultural understanding and tolerance. Recommendations for future research include further exploration of effective teaching strategies, the development of inclusive learning methods, and longitudinal studies to assess the long-term impact of ICC integration in Islamic educational settings.

Recasting al-Siyāsa al-Sharʿiyya in 1920s Egypt: Formulating a Theory of an Islamic Modern State

This article primarily explores one of the Muslim scholarly discourses aiming to construct an Islamic governance model, harmonious with the modern state, that is intertwined with premodern Islamic traditions. It scrutinizes the reinterpretation and reconceptualization of the premodern concept of siyāsa sharʿiyya in 1920s Egypt by modernist ʿulamāʾ (religious scholars) to align with the nation state’s legal and constitutional landscapes. The study focuses on the legislative aspects of this modernized theory of siyāsa sharʿiyya and demonstrates how under this theory the state conceptually begins to play a legitimate role in defining Islamic law. Special attention is given to ʿAbd al-Wahhāb Khallāf’s (d. 1375/1956) book, al-Siyāsa al-sharʿiyya, which highlights the transformative epistemological and constitutional repercussions of this discourse. Comparative analysis is conducted with the works of premodern progenitors of the concept, such as Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328) and Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (d. 751/1350) and later authors who have used the concept, to identify discrepancies between premodern and modern discourses in siyāsa sharʿiyya. The study also cites practical implementations of this modernized theory through a law project proposed in Egypt in 1926 that demonstrates how the new siyāsa sharʿiyya discourse bestowed an inherent legal authority to the state to independently legislate on sharīʿa laws based on an expanded conceptualization of maṣlaḥa (public benefit).

Progressivism, Modernity and Decadence: A Study of Select Works of Ahmed Ali

The modernity of the progressive writers has long borne the blame for being indebted to the Western trends of modernist thoughts. This article engages in challenging this notion by tracing the roots of Islamic modernity to the qasbati tradition of medieval eastern culture and its residual traces in 18th and 19th century India. The pre-Renaissance Muslim cultures in the Middle East and South Asia during the Caliphate rulers had a high intellectual heritage which propagated to India during the Mughals and concentrated within the qasbahs, thus resulting in the formation of a unique literary and cultural tradition. This dissertation shall argue with substantial historical evidence from Muslim literary history since the medieval era, that the modernity of the Progressive writers was not necessarily a Western import in colonial India rather it is rooted in a vibrant intellectual and cultural tradition propagated through generations in the qasbahs. In the process, it also aims to understand ‘modernity’ as a dynamic and allencompassing state of intellectual understanding. Taking up select works of Ahmed Ali, this article attempts to substantiate the claim that progressive modernity is unique and is characterised by an attitude of assertion (of their own social values), interrogation and selective participation (in the new system), as manifested in the life and culture of the qasbati tradition.

Manajemen Pemasaran Lembaga Pendidikan Islam (Pesantren Modern Darul Ilmi Indonesia)

This research aims to determine the marketing management of Islamic educational institutions at the Darul 'Ilmi Indonesia Islamic Boarding School. This research uses qualitative research methods. This research was carried out at an Islamic boarding school, namely the Darul Ilmi Indonesia Modern Islamic Boarding School, which is located on Jl. Raya Puncak Gadog, Pandan Sari Village, West Java, RT.01/RW.03, Ciawi, Kab. Bogor, West Java 16720. Primary data sources were obtained through interview activities with resource persons from the leadership of the Darul Ilmi Indonesia Modern Islamic Boarding School, teaching and education staff, santri guardians, and santri. Data analysis uses the Miles and Hubberman model by reducing, verifying and drawing conclusions. From the research results, it can be concluded that the competitive advantage of modern Islamic boarding school or Islamic boarding school programs can be presented by prioritizing the quality of the educational programs offered. The quality of an educational program is of course reflected through the input, output, process and educational outcomes achieved.

A female imam in Paris: Islam, gender, and secular normativity

ABSTRACT This article discusses Kahina Bahloul’s political and religiousengagement and her project to create the liberal ‘Fatima Mosque’, founded in 2019 in Paris. Bahloul is a complex figure, and her political and religious project touches on several dimensions: she was inspired by Sufi doctrines (Ibn ʿArabi and the ʿAlāwiyya) and Islamic modernist philosophy (Mohammed Arkoun). Furthermore, she advocates for a liberal and secular Islam, proposing radical reform and implying the compliance with secular constraints, the merging of social sciences with Islamic sciences, and the polarisation between liberal Muslims and ‘fundamentalist’ Muslims. Thisarticle will show that 1) Sufism is mainly used to justify an individualistic approach to Islam; 2) Bahloul’s epistemological hybridity, based on Islam andsocial sciences, implies a strong tension between her role as a scholar and as a religious authority; and 3) Bahloul’s reform of Islam is not new or radical. The peculiarity of her political and religious project is her compliance with the whimsical French debate on Islam and laïcité, which implies accepting new bans, the privatisation of Islam, and the polarisation between ‘good Muslims’ and ‘bad Muslims’.

Pengaruh Fasilitas Perpustakaan terhadap Minat Membaca Peserta Didik Kelas IX Pesantren Modern Tarbiyah Takalar

This research aims to determine the influence of library facilities on the reading interest of class XI students at the Tarbiyah Takalar Modern Islamic Boarding School. This research is quantitative research using an ex post facto method. The respondents in this research were class XI students at the Tarbiyah Takalar Modern Islamic Boarding School. Data collection in this research used a questionnaire instrument consisting of 20 statements, which were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and linearity analysis. Based on the results of descriptive statistical analysis, it can be concluded that the Tarbiyah Takalar Modern Islamic Boarding School's library facilities are in the medium category with a percentage of 72.2%, while the reading interest of class XI students at the Tarbiyah Takalar Modern Islamic Boarding School is also in the medium category with a percentage of 69.4%. This research also showed an influence between library facilities and the reading interest of class XI students at the Tarbiyah Takalar Modern Islamic Boarding School.

Pengaruh model pembelajaran discovery learning terintegrasi ayat-ayat Al-Quran terhadap hasil belajar fisika dan sikap spiritual siswa Ponpes Modern As-Sa’adah pada materi gerak melingkar

This research was conducted to determine the effect of the discovery learning model integrated with verses from the Koran on the physics learning outcomes and spiritual attitudes of As-sa'adah modern Islamic boarding school students on circular motion material, with data collection techniques through pretest and posttest. Purpose sampling technique, the sample consisted of 30 students from the As-sa'adah Modern Islamic Boarding School, Serang Banten. The analytical method used in this research is Quantitative Data Analysis. The research results show that the results of learning physics and spiritual attitudes without using the Discovery Learning learning model integrated with Al-Quran verses, based on the descriptive test, are quite good. Physics learning outcomes and spiritual attitudes using the integrated Discovery Learning learning model of Al-Quran verses, based on descriptive tests in the good category. There is an influence of the Discovery Learning learning model integrated with Al-Quran verses and without integrated Al-Quran verses. The results of the Pretest analysis obtained a p-value= 0.034 and the Posttest obtained a p-value= 0.000. This shows that the p-value (sig) &lt; 0.05, so H0 is rejected. Thus, it can be concluded that student learning outcomes after treatment between the experimental group and the control group are significantly different.

Reinforcement of Pancasila Student Profile Through Religious Activities at Al-Islam Modern Islamic Boarding School, Nganjuk

This study aims to examine the role of religious activities in strengthening the character of students summarized in the Pancasila Student Profile. The method used is descriptive qualitative with the type of field research. Observation, interviews, document analysis, and documentation were used to collect data during the research. This study has concluded that Al-Islam Modern Islamic Boarding School offers a diverse range of activities imbued with religious values. The activities in question are as follows: fardu prayers in congregation, sorogan Al-Quran, reading Al-Quran, Duha prayers in congregation, recitation of kitab kuning (turath), KBM (teaching and learning activities), takror (repeated learning), Muhadlarah, scouts, Roan (mass cleaning), tahlil reading, Maulid Barzanji, pilgrimage to the grave of the founder of Pesantren, various competitions, PHBI (Commemoration of Islamic Holidays), hiking, wade game, and holy journey. The findings of research indicate that religious activities at Al-Islam Modern Islamic Boarding School contribute to the strengthening of the Pancasila Student Profile of the students. This can be observed in various aspects of the Pancasila Student Profile, as illustrated by these religious activities, including faith, fear of God Almighty, noble character, and cooperation. The dimensions of faith and morals towards nature become more robust as a result of these activities, while the cooperation dimension is reinforced through collaboration and a sense of caring.

How do Islamic movements in the 19th and 20th centuries in Egypt help define Islamic modernity?

This research article explores the concept of multiple “modernities” as a counter to Western modernity, with a specific focus on the modernization of Islam. The paper provides a historical context to the modernization of Islam by examining 18th, 19th, and 20th-century Islamic reforms and their impact on the religion while staying true to its core principles. It also examines the influence of globalization on Islamic nations, using Egypt as an example. The article challenges the Western-centric narrative of modernity by emphasizing that modernity is not confined to Europe and can emerge under different conditions in diverse regions. The study highlights the Tajdid movement, the Muslim Brotherhood, and the Salafat movement as examples of Islamic modernization efforts. The research demonstrates how these movements aimed to reform Islam while addressing global political, social, and economic changes. The article concludes that Islamic modernity is a dynamic and multifaceted phenomenon that combines traditional Islamic teachings with contemporary contexts.

Prophetic Approach in Environmental Education and Community Empowerment: A Case Study of Sustainable Pesantren Development

Purpose: This study explores the application of the prophetic approach in community empowerment for the development of sustainable Pesantren. It aims to investigate how environmental education, integrated with Islamic teachings, can enhance human awareness and commitment to environmental preservation within the context of Pesantren. Method: The study is based on a case study of Pondok Pesantren Islam Modern (PPMI) Assalaam, utilizing qualitative research methods. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, document analysis, and direct observation. The analysis focuses on understanding the implementation of environmental education programs and the prophetic approach to community empowerment at PPMI Assalaam. Result and Conclusion: The concept of Green Pesantren at PPMI Assalaam involves integrating environmental education with Islamic teachings and social values, leading to a balanced education approach. Two main programs, the Adiwiyata Program and the Ekopesantren Program, are implemented to promote environmental awareness and sustainable practices within the Pesantren community. The study finds that environmental awareness among the community members influences their beliefs, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors, contributing to environmental preservation efforts. Additionally, community empowerment at PPMI Assalaam is based on environmental consciousness, community empowerment principles, and the prophetic approach, emphasizing not only physical and social development but also spiritual growth and deeper connections with God. This holistic approach enriches empowerment theory with transcendent elements, providing a profounder understanding of human development and societal change. Implication of the Research: The findings of this study have implications for environmental education and community empowerment initiatives within Pesantren and similar religious educational institutions. By integrating the prophetic approach, Pesantren can enhance their efforts in promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices among students and the broader community. Moreover, the study suggests that a holistic approach to community empowerment, encompassing spiritual and transcendent dimensions, can lead to more meaningful and sustainable societal change. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the understanding of how the prophetic approach can be applied to environmental education and community empowerment within the context of Pesantren. By integrating Islamic teachings with environmental principles, Pesantren can play a significant role in fostering environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Additionally, the study highlights the importance of considering spiritual dimensions in empowerment theory, offering new insights into holistic approaches to community development.

An Orient of One’s Own: Music and Islamic Modernism in the Late Ottoman Empire

Abstract During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Muslim intellectuals sought to articulate new forms of Islamic thought and practice that would be suitable for the modern world. Islamic modernist movements drew on concepts of civilization, progress and science that were integral to European imperialism while also constituting a critical response to the latter. In this essay, I examine the views of prominent Ottoman Muslim reformists concerning music, and situate them within a transnational debate about Islam and modernity. While the views of earlier reformers were shaped by Eurocentric notions of musical progress, an oppositional discourse emerged at the end of the nineteenth century. This discourse, associated especially with Rauf Yekta (1871–1935), appropriated the idea of ‘the Orient’ in order to establish a pan-Islamic narrative of music history, which also emphasized the scientific aspects of Islamicate music theory. In the final part of the essay, I discuss how debates about musical reform were related to the political dynamics of the late Ottoman Empire, particularly in terms of religious and ethnic identity. In conclusion, I argue that the discursive categories of the late nineteenth century continue to underly music historiographies both in the West and in other places, precisely as a consequence of the global connections that emerged during this period. In order to write more ‘global’ histories of music, it is therefore necessary to move beyond the analysis of Western colonialist representations by engaging more closely with non-European sources and discourses, which reveal more entangled and ambivalent stories about music, empire and modernity.

Risālat al-Sheikh Asnāwī al-Quds al-Jāwī: Rebuttal of Jawi Ulama against Fatwa of the Meccan Ulama

This article is carried out to discuss the rebuttal of Jawi ulama, K.H. Raden Muḥammad Asnawi Kudus (1861-1959), against the fatwa of the muftī of Mecca, Sheikh ‘Abdullāh al-Zawāwī (1850-1925), in the early twentieth century. Asnawi’s rebuttal was written in an Arabic manuscript from Banyuwangi entitled Risālat al-Sheikh Asnawī al-Quds al-Jāwī and digitized by the DREAMSEA project DS 0042 00001. The pages contain rebuttal of Asnawi against al-Zawāwī’s fatwa regarding the legal status of reading hagiography or manāqib of Sheikh ‘Abd al-Qādir al-Jaylānī (1078-1166). The manuscript shows the initial response of traditionalist ulama of Jawi to the issue of modernist Islam discussed in the Malay-Indonesia archipelago. Asnawi strongly denied the Meccan muftī’s fatwa, which is influenced by the ideas of reformist-modernist Islam. This debate marks the dynamics of the social-intellectual environment of Muslims in Mecca and Southeast Asia in the early twentieth century.

Imagined Musical Geographies in a Global Age: Views from Jodhpur, Istanbul and Buenos Aires, c. 1870–1930

Abstract This collection of papers explores the intellectual history of music in global context during the period between around 1870 and 1930. Following an introduction that discusses the state of the field, each of the three papers presents a case study that explores the intersection between music and global history from diverse perspectives. The first paper discusses a Hindi music treatise published in 1896. By situating this work within multiple ‘significant geographies’, the paper highlights the limitations of ‘global’ approaches that neglect the more immediate musical, social and intellectual environments of their subjects. The second paper analyses the intersection between music and Islamic modernism in the late Ottoman Empire. It argues that a Eurocentric understanding of music history propagated by earlier reformists was succeeded at the end of the nineteenth century by an oppositional narrative that drew on the geopolitical imaginary of pan-Islamism. The final paper discusses the work of the Argentine composer Alberto Williams, particularly in relation to his views on race and national music. The paper demonstrates how contemporary scientific theories such as positivism and Social Darwinism contributed to a narrative of national musical development that created hierarchies of musical genres and excluded Argentine composers of African descent.

Recontextualizing Modernity: A Case Study of The Kaum Adat in Padangpanjang Through the Boedi-Tjaniago (1920s)

This study examines the representation of progressive and modern ideas in Minangkabau during the early 1900s through an analysis of Boedi Tjaniago newspaper. The historical research method was employed, utilizing heuristic, criticism, interpretation, and historiography stages, with the primary data source being the Boedi Tjaniago newspaper from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia. The research findings indicate that Boedi Tjaniago served as a platform for the dissemination of modern ideas, including the modernization of education, gender equality, economic progress, Islamic modernization, and nationalism. Boedi Tjaniago was a significant media outlet that not only spread the message of progress but also contributed to building the identity and unity of the Minangkabau people.&#x0D; Keywords: Boedi Tjaniago, modernization, Minangkabau, education, gender equality, economic progress, Islamic modernization, nationalism.

ANALISIS PENGGUNAAN SISTEM INFORMASI AKUNTANSI PONDOK PESANTREN MODERN AL-HASYIMIYAH DARUL ULUM

The purpose of this study was to determine the method of recording financial statements at Pondok Pesantren Modern Alhasyimiyah Darul Ulum. Qualitative research is used as a research method. The sources of information used are important information obtained through direct meetings and optional information obtained from related reports. The area of this examination is North Padang Lawas. The phenomena that occur in the school of Modern Islamic Boarding School Alhasyimiyah Darul Ulum have not been by PSAK 45 regulations. The data sources conducted by researchers are interviews, documentation, and observation at Modern Islamic Boarding School Alhasyimiyah Darul Ulum and the techniques used by researchers to collect data are data sorting, data presentation, and data verification. The results of the research at the Modern Islamic Boarding School Alhasyimiyah Darul Ulum are currently not following the bookkeeping data framework plan at the Islamic Living School which is not by PSAK 45, considering that there are still a few financial statement data framework reports that are not made by the pesantren, especially the Money Position Report, Explanation of Income, Notes on Fiscal Summary.

Exploring the Nexus of Islamic Modernism and Intellectual Development

This paper discusses Islamic modernism and the development of Islamic intellectualism. The method used is descriptive-analytical method with a historical approach. Its aim is to understand Islamic modernism and the development of Islamic intellectualism. The author finds that: First, Islamic modernism is a renewal of understanding that is more relevant to modern life, interpreting things to open the door of ijtihad and avoid blind adherence to schools of thought by thinking rationally in understanding and reflecting on Islamic teachings. Second, the development of Islamic intellectualism is divided into three eras. Each has a different pattern. The classical era began at the time of the Prophet Muhammad, where the development of Islamic intellectualism was practiced through teaching and education using methods of writing and memorization. In the medieval era, Islamic intellectualism began to flourish. Institutionalization began to emerge through theological movements, Sufism, and schools of thought. Furthermore, in the modern era, there is a struggle within Islamic intellectual tradition. The modern era seeks to eradicate superstition, myths, and innovations that have constrained the Muslim community.
