Potential Lifshitz transition at optimal substitution in nematic pnictide Ba1-xSrxNi2As2.

BaNi2As2 is a structural analog of the pnictide superconductor BaFe2As2, which, like the iron-based superconductors, hosts a variety of ordered phases including charge density waves (CDWs), electronic nematicity, and superconductivity. Upon isovalent Sr substitution on the Ba site, the charge and nematic orders are suppressed, followed by a sixfold enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature (Tc). To understand the mechanisms responsible for enhancement of Tc, we present high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements of the Ba1-xSrxNi2As2 series, which agree well with our density functional theory (DFT) calculations throughout the substitution range. Analysis of our ARPES-validated DFT results indicates a Lifshitz transition and reasonably nested electron and hole Fermi pockets near optimal substitution where Tc is maximum. These nested pockets host Ni dxz/dyz orbital compositions, which we associate with the enhancement of nematic fluctuations, revealing unexpected connections to the iron-pnictide superconductors. This gives credence to a scenario in which nematic fluctuations drive an enhanced Tc.

Order–disorder phase transition and elastic-to-plastic vortex creep crossover in a triclinic iron pnictide superconductor (Ca_{0.85}La_{0.15})_{10}(Pt_3As_8)(Fe_2As_2)_5

Vortex matter in layered high-T_c superconductors, including iron-pnictides, undergo several thermodynamic phase transitions due to the complex interplay of pinning energy, thermal energy and elastic energy. Moreover, the presence of anisotropy makes their vortex physics even more intriguing. Here, we report a detailed vortex dynamics study, using dc magnetization measurements, in a triclinic iron-pnictide superconductor (Ca_{0.85}La_{0.15})_{10}(Pt_3As_8)(Fe_2As_2)_5, with a superconducting transition temperature, T_csim 31 K. A second magnetization peak (SMP) feature is observed for magnetic field perpendicular (Hparallelc) and parallel (Hparallelab) to the crystal plane. However, its fundamental origin is quite different in both directions. For Hparallelc, the SMP can be well explained using an elastic-to-plastic vortex creep crossover, using collective creep theory. In addition, a possible rhombic-to-square vortex lattice phase transition is also observed for fields in between the onset-field and peak-field related to the SMP. On the other hand, for Hparallelab, a clear signature of an order-disorder vortex phase transition is observed in the isothermal M(H) measurements at Tge 6 K. The disordered phase exhibits the characteristics of entangled pinned vortex-liquid. We construct a comprehensive vortex phase diagram by displaying characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for both crystal geometries in this unique superconducting compound. Our study sheds light on the intricate vortex dynamics and pinning in an iron-pnictide superconductor with triclinic symmetry.

Smectic pair-density-wave order in EuRbFe4As4.

The pair density wave (PDW) is a superconducting state in which Cooper pairs carry centre-of-mass momentum in equilibrium, leading to the breaking of translational symmetry1-4. Experimental evidence for such a state exists in high magnetic field5-8 and in some materials that feature density-wave orders that explicitly break translational symmetry9-13. However, evidence for a zero-field PDW state that exists independent of other spatially ordered states has so far been elusive. Here we show that such a state exists in the iron pnictide superconductor EuRbFe4As4, a material that features co-existing superconductivity (superconducting transition temperature (Tc) ≈ 37 kelvin) and magnetism (magnetic transition temperature (Tm) ≈ 15 kelvin)14,15. Using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy (SI-STM) measurements, we show that the superconducting gap at low temperature has long-range, unidirectional spatial modulations with an incommensurate period of about eight unit cells. Upon increasing the temperature above Tm, the modulated superconductor disappears, but a uniform superconducting gap survives to Tc. When an external magnetic field is applied, gap modulations disappear inside the vortex halo. The SI-STM and bulk measurements show the absence of other density-wave orders, indicating that the PDW state is a primary, zero-field superconducting state in this compound. Both four-fold rotational symmetry and translation symmetry are recovered above Tm, indicating that the PDW is a smectic order.

Interlayer coupling in the superconducting state of iron-based superconductors

High-temperature superconducting paring is generally believed to be mediated by the magnetic fluctuations that mostly occur within the two-dimensional conducting layers (Cu-O, Fe-As, or Fe-Se) in copper oxides, iron pnictides, iron chalcogenides, etc. Here, on the basis of inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a superconducting iron pnictide ${\mathrm{Ca}}_{0.33}{\mathrm{Na}}_{0.67}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$, we have discovered a highly three-dimensional spin resonance mode with upward V-shape dispersions both in the $ab$ plane and along the $c$ axis. The superconducting gaps exhibit strong ${k}_{z}$ modulations involved with significant changes on the size of one hole pocket and the density state of the ${d}_{{z}^{2}}$ orbital of Fe. The resonance dispersions don't always seem confined by the total gaps summed on those imperfectly nesting Fermi sheets. It is demonstrated that the $c$-axis dependence of both the resonance energy and its intensity in iron pnictides can be universally scaled with the distance between two adjacent Fe-As layers ($d$), and the ${k}_{z}$ modulation of the gap is also anticorrelated with $d$. These results highlight the role of interlayer coupling in iron-based superconductivity, suggesting that the interlayer pairing may also be driven by magnetic fluctuations under certain spin-orbit couplings.

The breakdown of both strange metal and superconducting states at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in iron-pnictide superconductors

Here we report the first observation of the concurrent breakdown of the strange metal (SM) normal state and superconductivity at a pressure-induced quantum critical point in Ca10(Pt4As8)((Fe0.97Pt0.03)2As2)5 superconductor. We find that, upon suppressing the superconducting state, the power exponent (α) changes from 1 to 2, and the slope of the temperature-linear resistivity per FeAs layer (A□) gradually diminishes. At a critical pressure, A□ and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) go to zero concurrently, where a quantum phase transition from a superconducting state with a SM normal state to a non-superconducting Fermi liquid state occurs. Scaling analysis reveals that the change of A□ with Tc obeys the relation of Tc ~ (A□)0.5, similar to what is seen in other chemically doped unconventional superconductors. These results suggest that there is a simple but powerful organizational principle of connecting the SM normal state with the high-Tc superconductivity.

Anisotropic vortex core in the nematic state in electron-doped iron-pnictide superconductors

We investigated the vortex states in the electron-doped BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, based on a phenomenological model with competing nematic order and extended s-wave superconductivity. Specifically, we considered the spin-driven nematic order for the optimally doped compound. Our findings suggest that there are no Andreev bound states at the Fermi energy in the nematic phase, and the local density of states exhibits a double-peak structure, consistent with scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. Moreover, we propose an elliptic vortex structure in the local density of states map, which we attribute to the presence of the nematic order.

Spin density wave and antiferromagnetic transition in EuFe2As2: a high field transport and heat capacity study

Abstract Here we reported structural, electrical, magnetic, and thermal transport properties of ternary pnictide bulk iron based compound EuFe2As2 (Eu-122). This compound (Eu-122) crystallized in ThCr2Si2-type tetragonal phase structure with space group I4/mmm at ambient temperature. A promising divalent state (Eu2+) of Eu-ions was observed in the studied EuFe2As2. Magnetic ordering of Eu2+ ions takes place at very low temperature at around T N = 20 K in EuFe2As2. The ferromagnetic interactions between Fe–Fe ions were established at higher temperature which was revealed from magnetic susceptibility measurements with negative value of the paramagnetic Curie temperature. Both magnetic phase transitions (20 K and 190 K) were clearly established the intrinsic magnetic nature revealed by both electrical transport and specific heat measurement. However the phase transition at low temperature corresponds to the magnetic ordering of Eu2+ ions while the high transition temperature is due to the itinerant moment of Fe. EuFe2As2 is the only compound among various parent compounds of iron pnictide superconductor’s family, in which both spin density wave (SDW) of Fe and A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the localized Eu2+ magnetic moments take place simultaneously. We observed here that the localized character of Eu anti-ferromagnetism dominated via RKKY interactions, despite the largely itinerant nature of Fe magnetic interactions. The resistivity with applied magnetic field revealed that the AFM ordering temperature of Eu2+ ions suppress with applied magnetic field. Also resistivity under hydrostatic pressure measurements shows the T SDW (Fe) transition of the Fe moments shifts towards the lower temperatures while AFM ordering of Eu2+ decreases with pressure and the same is completely disappears at 2 GPa.

Phonon softening and slowing-down of charge density wave fluctuations in BaNi2As2

BaNi$_2$As$_2$ is a nonmagnetic analogue of the iron pnictide superconductors, and in its tetragonal state exhibits an incommensurate charge-density-wave (IC-CDW) and a sizable elastoresistance. In this work, phonons in BaNi$_2$As$_2$ associated with the IC-CDW and uniform in-plane lattice distortions are investigated using high-resolution inelastic X-ray scattering. The in-plane transverse acoustic phonons reveal no softening at temperatures where the elastoresistance increases strongly, indicating the latter to be electronically driven. Systematic phonon measurements reveal the IC-CDW occurs in two stages upon cooling: underdamped phonons first soften to zero energy well above the IC-CDW ordering temperature, then the resulting quasielastic IC-CDW fluctuations gradually slow down and coalesce into the static IC-CDW order. A possible origin for our observations is the IC-CDW in tetragonal BaNi$_2$As$_2$ being uniaxial, which provides an additional Ising degree of freedom favorable for disordered IC-CDW modulations, and accounts for the elastoresistance through a weak coupling to the lattice.

Interference Effect of Beam Splitter Current in Iron-Pnictide Superconductors

We consider a Cooper pair beam splitter for Iron-Pnictide superconductor and calculate the entangled electron-hole current. We investigate the interplay of various physical parameters such as doping at electron and hole pockets as well as non-zero nesting between the electron and hole pocket. We find that in the absence of magnetic order, the current due to hole pocket and electron pocket add up ordinarily. However in the presence of magnetic ordering the two currents take part in characteristic interference effect to modify the resultant current significantly. This interference effect manifests itself in non-monotonous and oscillatory nature of beam splitter current. We investigate in details this non-monotonicity with the chemical potential as well as nesting vectror $|\bf q|$. We also investigate the evolution of density of states with system parameters and correlate it with the beam-splitter current. Further we enumerate the relevant parameter space where the efficiency of such beam splitter set up is enhanced. Our finding can be useful in experimental determination or verification of co-existence phase in Iron-Pnictide superconductors and has potential applications in realizing quantum gates or switches.

Mathematical and Physical Properties of Three-Band s± Eliashberg Theory for Iron Pnictides

The phenomenology of the iron pnictide superconductor can be described by the three-band s± Eliashberg theory in which the mechanism of superconducting coupling is mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and whose characteristic energy Ω0 scales with Tc according to the empirical law Ω0=4.65kBTc. This model presents the universal characteristics that are independent of the critical temperature, such as the link between the two free parameters λ13 and λ23 and the ratio Δi/kBTc.

Magnetotransport as a probe for the interplay between Sm and Fe magnetism in SmFeAsO

The complex magnetic ordering of parent compounds of most unconventional superconductors is crucial for the understanding of high-temperature superconductivity (SC). Within this framework, we have performed temperature-dependent magnetotransport experiments on a single crystal of SmFeAsO, a parent compound of iron pnictide superconductors. We observe multiple features in the measured transport properties at temperatures below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Sm, , which evolve with in-plane magnetic field, suggesting a rich variety of metamagnetic transitions never before observed in this compound. Considering that transport mainly involves Fe d orbitals at the Fermi level, these findings suggest that the features originate from magnetic transitions of the Fe moments sublattice, which in turn may be induced by magnetic transitions of the Sm moments sublattice via the interaction between Fe and Sm moments. We outline a possible scenario in which the Fe moments, strongly affected by the Sm ordering below T NSm, reorder to an in-plane canted AFM structure, which is washed out by the application of an in-plane magnetic field up to 9 T. Our work shows that transport properties are a valuable tool for investigating magnetic ordering in iron pnictide parent compounds, where the interplay of magnetism and SC is believed to be the origin of high-temperature SC.

Random strain induced correlations in materials with intertwined nematic and magnetic orders

Electronic nematicity is rarely observed as an isolated instability of a correlated electron system. Instead, in iron pnictides and in certain cuprates and heavy-fermion materials, nematicity is intertwined with an underlying spin-stripe or charge-stripe state. As a result, random strain, ubiquitous in any real crystal, creates both random-field disorder for the nematic degrees of freedom and random-bond disorder for the spin or charge ones. Here, we put forward an Ashkin-Teller model with random Baxter fields to capture the dual role of random strain in nematic systems for which nematicity is a composite order arising from a stripe state. Using Monte Carlo to simulate this $\textit{random Baxter-field model}$, we find not only the expected break-up of the system into nematic domains, but also the emergence of nontrivial disorder-promoted magnetic correlations. Such correlations enhance and tie up the fluctuations associated with the two degenerate magnetic stripe states from which nematicity arises, leaving characteristic signatures in the spatial profile of the magnetic domains, in the configurational space of the spin variables, and in the magnetic noise spectrum. We discuss possible experimental manifestations of these effects in iron-pnictide superconductors. Our work establishes the random Baxter-field model as a more complete alternative to the random-field Ising model to describe complex electronic nematic phenomena in the presence of disorder.

Study of superconducting gap in presence of antiferromagnetism in iron pnictide superconductors

A Hamiltonian model of the pnictide composite superconductors is presented to study the Superconducting(SC) gap. The total Hamiltonian has been solved by writing equations of motion for single particle Greens function of Zubarev type. Equations for appropriate single particle correlation functions are derived and the order parameters corresponding to superconductivity and antiferromagnetism are determined. The equations for superconducting gap and antiferromagnetic gap are solved self-consistently and numerically. The multi-gap superconductivity is studied for different values of interlayer coupling constant parameters and Debye frequencies.

Multiple magnetic orders in LaFeAs1-xPxO uncover universality of iron-pnictide superconductors

The iron-pnictide superconductors have generated tremendous excitement as the competition between magnetism and superconductivity has allowed unique in-roads towards elucidating a microscopic theory of unconventional high-temperature superconductivity. In addition to the stripe spin density wave ({C}_{2M}^{a}) phase observed in the parent compounds of all iron-pnictide superconductors, two novel magnetic orders have recently been discovered in different parent structures: an out-of-plane collinear double-Q ({C}_{4M}^{c}) structure in the hole-doped (Ca, Sr, Ba)1-x(Na)xFe2As2 and Ba1-xKxFe2As2 families, and a spin vortex crystal “hedgehog” ({C}_{4M}^{{ab}}) structure in the CaKFe4As4 family. Using neutron diffraction, we demonstrate that LaFeAs1-xPxO contains all three magnetic orders within a single-phase diagram as a function of substitution, all of which compete strongly with superconductivity. Our experimental observations combined with theoretical modeling demonstrate how the reduction in electronic correlations by chemical substitution results in larger Fermi surfaces and the sequential stabilization of multiple magnetic anisotropies. Our work presents a unified narrative for the competing magnetic and superconducting phases observed in various iron-pnictide systems with different crystal structures and chemistry.

Elastoresistivity of Heavily Hole-Doped 122 Iron Pnictide Superconductors

Nematicity in heavily hole-doped iron pnictide superconductors remains controversial. Sizeable nematic fluctuations and even nematic orders far from magnetic instability were declared in RbFe2As2and its sister compounds. Here, we report a systematic elastoresistance study of a series of isovalent- and electron-doped KFe2As2crystals. We found divergent elastoresistance on cooling for all the crystals along their [110] direction. The amplitude of elastoresistivity diverges if K is substituted with larger ions or if the system is driven toward a Lifshitz transition. However, we conclude that none of them necessarily indicates an independent nematic critical point. Instead, the increased nematicity can be associated with another electronic criticality. In particular, we propose a mechanism for how elastoresistivity is enhanced at a Lifshitz transition.

Preferred Spin Excitations in the Bilayer Iron-Based Superconductor CaK(Fe_{0.96}Ni_{0.04})_{4}As_{4} with Spin-Vortex Crystal Order.

Spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is a key to understand the magnetically driven superconductivity in iron-based superconductors, where both local and itinerant electrons are present and the orbital angular momentum is not completely quenched. Here, we report a neutron scattering study on the bilayer compound CaK(Fe_{0.96}Ni_{0.04})_{4}As_{4} with superconductivity coexisting with a noncollinear spin-vortex crystal magnetic order that preserves the tetragonal symmetry of the Fe-Fe plane. In the superconducting state, two spin resonance modes with odd and even L symmetries due to the bilayer coupling are found similar to the undoped compound CaKFe_{4}As_{4} but at lower energies. Polarization analysis reveals that the odd mode is c-axis polarized, and the low-energy spin anisotropy can persist to the paramagnetic phase at high temperature, which closely resembles other systems with in-plane collinear and c-axis biaxial magnetic orders. These results provide the missing piece of the puzzle on the SOC effect in iron-pnictide superconductors, and also establish a common picture of c-axis preferred magnetic excitations below T_{c} regardless of the details of magnetic pattern or lattice symmetry.

Enhanced Nernst effect above Tc in the quasi-two-dimensional iron pnictide superconductor CsCa2Fe4As4F2

As a new type of iron pnictide superconductors, ${\mathrm{CsCa}}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{As}}_{4}{\mathrm{F}}_{2}$, featured by its unique FeAs bilayer, presents a quasi-two-dimensional characteristic which distinguishes itself from other iron pnictides. Here we systematically investigated its transport properties and thermoelectric effects, including the Seebeck and Nernst effect, and NMR. An unusual hump in the Nernst coefficient is observed as temperature decreases below 90 K, far above its ${T}_{c}$ of 28.5 K. Simultaneously there is a suppression in the Hall coefficient as well as the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in the same temperature range. To clarify this phenomenon, we comparatively investigated two other similar iron-based pnictide superconductors, ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{1\ensuremath{-}x}{\mathrm{K}}_{x}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}{\mathrm{As}}_{2}$ and ${\mathrm{CaKFe}}_{4}{\mathrm{As}}_{4}$. Our work indicates there could exist an incoherence-coherence crossover or a kind of Cooper pairing precursor in ${\mathrm{CsCa}}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{4}{\mathrm{As}}_{4}{\mathrm{F}}_{2}$ before achieving its superconductivity, which is different from other iron-based high-${T}_{c}$ superconductors. Such a comparative study may help us to understand the effect of dimensional evolution from three dimensional to two dimensional on high-${T}_{c}$ superconductivity.

Theoretical Study on the Effect of Multiband Structure on Critical Temperature and Electronic Specific Heat in SmOFeAs Iron Pnictide Superconductor

In the present theoretical work, superconducting order parameter (∆) and electronic specific heat (Ces) of SmOFeAs iron pnictide (IP) superconductor has been studied using multiband (MB) model of IP superconductors. Attempt has been made to use the MB structure of IP superconductors and expressions for critical temperature (Tc) and Ces are obtained, calculations being made for one, two and three bands of SmOFeAs. It has been found that MB results are close to the experimental value of Tc for this compound. Ces calculations show jump of 1.5 × 10-5 eV/atom K, 4 × 10-5 eV/atom K and 4 × 10-5 eV/atom K for one, two and three band models respectively. The study brings out the importance of MB structure in IPs, highlighting the fact that increasing the number of bands, increases Tc. The specific heat jump (∆C) does not correspond to the BCS value, thereby proving that IPs are unconventional in nature.

Effects of 4d transition metal Pd doping on the magnetic and superconducting properties of 112-type iron pnictide EuFeAs2

The recently discovered 112-type EuFeAs2 compound that shows complex Eu-spin magnetism provides a new platform to study the interplay between superconductivity (SC) and magnetism in iron pnictide superconductors. In this paper, by substituting Fe with the 4d transition metal (TM) Pd, we have synthesized a series of EuFe1−x Pd x As2 (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.08) samples and studied the doping effect on SC and magnetism by means of electrical transport and magnetization measurements. The systematic evolution of the lattice parameters indicates that the Pd atoms have been successfully substituted into the Fe sites. With Pd doping, the Fe-related spin density wave transition at in the parent phase is rapidly suppressed, and SC simultaneously emerges, exhibiting a domelike shape with a maximum onset transition temperature of around 18.5 K at x = 0.04. On the other hand, the Eu-related antiferromagnetic order at is suppressed very slowly and persists up to x = 0.08, covering the whole SC dome region. Also, the reentrant spin-glass and spin-reorientation transitions below remain unchanged with Pd doping. All these results indicate that the Eu spins have little effect on SC in EuFe1−x Pd x As2. Finally, based on the resistivity and magnetization data, the T − x phase diagram of EuFe1−x Pd x As2 is constructed and compared with those of 3d TMs Co/Ni and La doped ones.
