High‐Toughness Hydrated Polymer Electrolytes for Advanced Structural Supercapacitors

AbstractStructural supercapacitors that simultaneously bear mechanical loads and store electrical energy have exciting potential for enhancing the efficiency of various mobile systems. However, a significant hurdle in developing practical structural supercapacitors is the inherent trade‐off between their mechanical properties and electrochemical capabilities, particularly within their electrolytes. This study demonstrates a tough polymer electrolyte with enhanced multifunctionality made through the controlled hydration of a solid polymer electrolyte with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and lithium salts. Characterization via differential scanning calorimetry, X‐ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirms the consistent amorphous solid solution phase in varying salt concentrations, whether dried or hydrated. Electrochemical tests and tensile tests are performed to evaluate the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of these electrolytes. The results indicate that the strategic incorporation of water in the polymer electrolyte significantly enhances the ionic conductivity while preserving its mechanical properties. A specific composition demonstrated a remarkable increase in ionic conductivity (3.11 µS cm−1) coupled with superior toughness (15.4 MJ m−3), significantly surpassing the base polymer. These findings open new horizons for integrating electrochemical functionality into structural polymers without compromising their mechanical properties. Additionally, the paper reports the successful fabrication and testing of structural supercapacitor prototypes combining carbon fibers with fabricated electrolytes, showcasing their potential for diverse applications.

Quasi‐Solid Composite Polymer Electrolyte‐Based Structural Batteries with High Ionic Conductivity and Excellent Mechanical Properties

Structural lithium batteries integrated with energy storage and mechanical load‐bearing capabilities hold great promise to revolutionize lightweight transport vehicles. However, the current development of structural batteries faces critical challenges in balancing the electrochemical and mechanical properties of the electrolytes. Herein, a super strong quasi‐solid composite polymer electrolyte (QCPE) is successfully fabricated by reinforcing polyelectrolyte with 3D in situ self‐assembled metal–organic framework‐modified glass fiber (MOF@GF) soaking a small amount of liquid electrolyte, which provides continuous ion conductive pathways for fast Li+ transport and contributes to the high ambient ionic conductivity of 1.47 × 10−3 S cm−1. The micropores and abundant polar functional groups selectively restrict the transport of anions to afford a homogeneous Li+ flux and a high Li+ transference number (0.56). Simultaneously, the MOF@GF provides more effective reinforcement and a remarkably high tensile strength of 48.6 MPa, and Young's modulus of 1.66 GPa is achieved. Furthermore, the lithium metal batteries fabricated with this QCPE exhibit a long, stable operation lifespan of 2000 h and excellent cycling performance with LiFePO4 and NCM811 cathodes. This design strategy generally opens a new avenue for structural batteries with high ionic conductivity and outstanding mechanical properties, which holds great promise for industrial translation.

Because of the high specific capacity and low cost, Ni-rich layered oxide (NRLO) cathodes are one of the most promising cathode candidates for the next high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, they face structure and interface instability challenges, especially the battery safety risk caused by using an intrinsic flammable organic liquid electrolyte. In this regard, a solid electrolyte with high safety is of great significance to promote the development of energy storage. Among them, sulfide electrolytes are considered to be the most potential substitutes for liquid electrolytes because of their high ionic conductivity and good processing properties. Nevertheless, the interfacial incompatibility between the sulfide electrolyte and NRLO cathode is the critical challenge for high-performance sulfide all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). In this review, we summarize the problems of the Ni-rich cathode/sulfide solid electrolyte interface and the strategies to improve the interface stability. On the basis of these insights, we highlight the scientific problems and technological challenges that need to be resolved urgently and propose several potential directions to further improve the interface stability. The objective of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding and insightful recommendations for the enhancement of the sulfide ASSLBs with NRLO cathode.

Ternary cesium(rubidium) tungstates: production and impedance spectroscopy

The work is aimed at the directed synthesis of new phases of tungstates containing mono-, tri-, and tetravalent metals, as well as the determination of their crystallographic, thermal, and electrophysical properties. The study used the method of solid-phase synthesis to obtain tungstate phases with composition MRA0.5(WO4)3 (M – singly, R – triply-, and A – tetra-charged elements) within the temperature range of 400–750 °С. Their crystallographic and thermal characteristics were determined. The synthesized ternary tungstates crystallizing in a hexagonal system were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The technique revealed an increase in the melting temperatures of compounds with increasing ionic radius of the trivalent cation in the series CsRTi0.5(WO4)3 (R = Al, Cr, Ga, Fe, In). The same correlation is observed when switching from rubidium to cesium derivatives. The thermal stability of ternary titanium and hafnium tungstates was compared. The melting temperatures of RbRTi0.5(WO4)3 are about 20 °С higher than those of their hafnium counterparts. The dielectric characteristics of CsRTi0.5(WO4)3 (R = Fe, Cr) belonging to the ternary tungstate family were analyzed via impedance spectroscopy. The temperature and frequency dependences of the conductivity of ternary tungstates at different frequencies (1 Hz – 1 mHz), measured in heating and cooling modes, are characterized by a slight temperature hysteresis, reaching 10-2–10-3 S/cm in the high-temperature region at activation energy values of 0.4–0.5 eV. The impedance frequency spectra measured within the range of 1 Hz – 1 mHz at different temperatures confirm the ion-conducting properties of the sample, which allows the obtained phases to be considered promising solid electrolytes.

High toughness antifreeze conductive double network zwitterionic gel electrolyte for flexible supercapacitors

AbstractFlexible wearable supercapacitors based on hydrogel electrolyte are considered as flexible energy storage device with great potential. However, polymer gel electrolytes contain a large number of water molecules, which can easily freeze at sub‐zero temperatures, thus severely inhibiting ion transport. The ionic conductivity, cyclic stability and mechanical properties of gel electrolytes decrease at low temperatures (below −25°C), which seriously hinders the application of flexible wearable supercapacitors. In order to improve the mechanical properties and ensure the excellent ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, a freezing‐resistant gel electrolyte constructed by supramolecular self‐assembly, which has a wide temperature range from 25 to −80°C, stable ionic conductivity and ultra‐high mechanical strength. Low‐temperature‐resistant gel electrolytes, called flexible supercapacitor‐SBMA‐co‐PVA‐AA/CaCl2 (FSAPC), have been designed and prepared by molecular‐scale supramolecular self‐assembly of rigid [2‐(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl(3‐sulfopropyl) polymer chains and flexible poly(vinyl alcohol) polymer chains, and the test results showed that the gel electrolyte ‐SBMA‐co‐PVA‐AA/CaCl2 (PSAPC) has excellent conductivity of 34.07 mS cm−1 at 25°C, the flexible supercapacitor has a specific capacity of 8.57 Wh kg−1, and the capacity retention rate is 91.2% even after 5000 cycles at −25°C, excellent conductivity at −25°C for 31.88 mS cm−1 and at −80°C for 35.34 mS cm−1. The potential applications of the amphiphilic ionic gel electrolyte in the industrial development of low‐temperature resistant supercapacitors are noteworthy.

Effects of side chain length on the performance of poly(aryl-alkylene) anion exchange membranes for fuel cells

Anion exchange membranes (AEMs) are one of the most critical materials determining the fuel cell (FC) performance. From current reports, there are still many limit factors for AEMs, such as conductivity, mechanical performance, power density and durability, which greatly affect their practicality. Here, we introduce a range of arylfluoroketone monomers with different side chain lengths into the poly (aryl-alkylene) matrix material using a copolymerization strategy to get AEMs. This study aims to investigate the effect of side chain length on the performance of AEMs, such as phase separation, ion conductivity and mechanical properties. Due to the existence of long alkyl side chains, QTPNPC4 shows significant hydrophilic aggregation, outstanding OH− conductivity (158.6 mS cm−1, 80 °C) and excellent flexibility (109.1 %). Meanwhile, QTPNPC4 exhibits remarkable ex-situ durability (96.3 %) and chemical stability (96.6 %) after soaking in a 2 M NaOH solution for 1560 h at 80 °C. In addition, the peak power density (PPD) of a single cell with QTPNPC4 reaches 927 mW cm−2 (80 °C), and the membrane has good in-situ durability (0.689 mV h−1).

Eco-friendly guar gum composites as solid-state electrolytes

Solid-state Guar gum electrolytes were prepared through the solution casting technique, employing a composition of 70 % Guar gum and 30 % ZnSO4·7H2O(GZ3). Different weight concentrations of nano ZrO2 (2.5 %, 5 %, 7.5 %, and 10 %) were introduced into the present Guar gum electrolytes. As prepared ZrO2 nanofiller substituted Guar gum electrolytes were examined by XRD, FTIR, DSC, and SEM to evaluate the amorphous characteristics, complexation, glass transition temperature, and surface morphology, respectively. Electrochemical impedance was utilized to examine the frequency-dependent ionic conductivity and dielectric properties of prepared ZrO2 nanofiller-substituted Guar gum electrolytes. At a temperature of 100 °C, the Guar gum electrolyte with10 % Nano ZrO2 exhibited an ionic conductivity of 3.19 × 10−3 S/cm, whereas, at room temperature (RT), it recorded a value of 1.09 × 10−3 S/cm. The activation energy for these electrolytes varied within the range of 0.26 eV–0.39 eV. Furthermore, an investigation of the frequency-dependent dielectric properties revealed a significant tail in the low-frequency region and the presence of space charge polarization within the electrolyte. The study also explored the relaxation time and hopping mechanism through dielectric modulus parameters. Moreover, a flexible Zn-based electrochemical cell was fabricated using a formulation comprising 70 % Guar gum, 30 % Zinc salt, and 10 % Nano ZrO2. The outcomes revealed an open circuit voltage of 0.82V, a discharge rate of 0.04C sustained over 25 h, with an average current discharge rate of approximately 1.4 mA per hour, resulting in an electrochemical-specific capacity of around 45mAh/g. Additionally, a solar cell device was fabricated using Guar gum electrolytes, and the photovoltaic parameters were computed. The maximum overall power conversion efficiency (ƞ) reached 4.79, with short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) at 9.66 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage (Voc) at 725 mV, and fill factor (FF) at 0.65.

Reprocessable, Highly Transparent Ionic Conductive Elastomers Based on β-Amino Ester Chemistry for Sensing Devices.

Ionic conductive elastomers (ICEs) exhibit a compelling combination of ionic conductivity and elastic properties, rendering them excellent candidates for stretchable electronics, particularly in applications like sensing devices. Despite their appeal, a significant challenge lies in the reprocessing of ICEs without compromising their performance. To address this issue, we propose a strategy that leverages covalent adaptable networks (CANs) for the preparation of ICEs. Specifically, β-amino ester bonds as dynamic motifs are incorporated into a poly(ethylene oxide) network containing lithium bis(trifluoromethane) sulfonimide (LiTFSI) salt. LiTFSI-containing β-amino ester networks (LBAEs) exhibit superb transparency (94%), thermal stability (>280 °C), and modest conductivity (0.00576 mS·cm-1 at 20 °C), and some LBAEs maintain operational capability across a wide temperature range (-20 to 100 °C). By regulating the lithium salt content, the mechanical properties, conductivities, and viscoelastic behaviors can be tailored. Benefiting from these features, LBAEs have been successfully applied in sensing devices for monitoring human motion (e.g., finger bending, swallowing, and clenching). Notably, even after four reprocessing cycles, LBAEs demonstrate structural integrity and maintain their operational capability. This novel approach represents a promising solution to the reprocessing challenges associated with flexible conductive devices, demonstrating the successful integration of CANs and ICEs.

A Flexible and Mechanical Robust All-Solid-State Polymer Electrolyte with Microphase Separated Structure for Lithium-Ion Battery.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based electrolytes are the most widely used solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) due to their high safety, excellent ability to dissociate lithium salts, low cost, and ease of preparation. However, low ionic conductivity and narrow electrochemical stability window limit their potential for further development. "Polymer-in-salt" electrolytes exhibit superior electrochemical performance; however, the high lithium salt concentration makes the SPE mechanically fragile when facing lithium dendrites. Therefore, preparing an SPE that can withstand a high concentration of lithium salt while still maintaining good mechanical properties has become a valuable challenge. In this study, a macroscopically homogeneous but nanoscopically phase-separated polymer matrix was designed as an electrolyte that can withstand a high concentration of lithium salt while retaining good mechanical properties, and this study investigated changes in the Li+ solvation structure within the electrolyte and analyzed the reasons for the simultaneous achievement of good ionic conductivity (1.02 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 60 °C) and mechanical properties (7 MPa at room temperature). The formation of large ion clusters at the phase interface and selective enrichment of lithium salt in specific regions are found to play crucial roles, and the critical current density (CCD) can reach a value of 2.2 mA cm-2. This work demonstrates a promising design approach for polymer electrolytes that achieves an optimal balance between SPE conductivity and mechanical properties through microstructure control.

A-LLTO Nanoparticles Embedded Composite Solid Polymer Electrolyte for Room Temperature Operational Li-metal Batteries.

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) have the potential to revolutionize the current energy storage sector. A significant portion of the current development of electric vehicles and the electrification of various appliances relies on Lithium (Li)-ion batteries. However, future energy demands will require the development of stronger and more reliable batteries. This report presents a novel solid state electrolyte (SSE) composed of a self-healing composite solid polymer electrolyte (CSPE) matrix and aluminum-doped (Li0.33La0.56)1.005Ti0.99Al0.01O3 (A-LLTO) nanofillers. The CSPE contains Jeffamine ED-2003 monomer, Benzene-1,3,5-tricarbaldehyde (BTC)crosslinker dissolved in a 1:1 ratio of Dimethylformamide (DMF) to LiPF6, and a certain amount (x) of A-LLTO nanofillers (x=5, 7.5, 10, 12.5%). A CSPE containing x-amount of A-LLTO fillers (referred to as CAL-x%) demonstrates excellent ion-conducting properties and stable battery performance. The CAL-10% demonstrates 1.1×10-3Scm-1 of ionic conductivity at room temperature (RT). A-LLTO nanofillers dispersed uniformly within the polymer matrix form a percolation network, which is believed to improve ionic conductivity and the diffusion of Li+ ions. The CR-2032 cell, consisting of LiFePO4 (LFP)║CAL-10%║Li, at RT offers an initial discharge capacity of ≈165mAhg-1 at 0.1C rate for 120 cycles with 98.85% coulombic efficiency (C.E.).

Functionalization of Cathode–Electrolyte Interface with Ionic Liquids for High-Performance Quasi-Solid-State Lithium–Sulfur Batteries: A Low-Sulfur Loading Study

We introduce a quasi-solid-state electrolyte lithium-sulfur (Li–S) battery (QSSEB) based on a novel Li-argyrodite solid-state electrolyte (SSE), Super P–Sulfur cathode, and Li-anode. The cathode was prepared using a water-based carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) solution and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) as the binder while Li6PS5F0.5Cl0.5 SSE was synthesized using a solvent-based process, via the introduction of LiF into the argyrodite crystal structure, which enhances both the ionic conductivity and interface-stabilizing properties of the SSE. Ionic liquids (IL) were prepared using lithium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as the salt, with pre-mixed pyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethyl sulfonyl)imide (PYR) as solvent and 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) as diluent, and they were used to wet the SSE–electrode interfaces. The effect of IL dilution, the co-solvent amount, the LiTFSI concentration, the C rate at which the batteries are tested and the effect of the introduction of SSE in the cathode, were systematically studied and optimized to develop a QSSEB with higher capacity retention and cyclability. Interfacial reactions occurring at the cathode–SSE interface during cycling were also investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy supported by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. This work offers a new insight into the intimate interfacial contacts between the SSE and carbon–sulfur cathodes, which are critical for improving the electrochemical performance of quasi-solid-state lithium–sulfur batteries.

A Review on Self-Assembly Driven Optoelectronic Properties of Polythiophene-Peptide and Polythiophene-Polymer Conjugates.

Polythiophene (PT) is an important conducting polymer for its outstanding optoelectronic properties. Here, we delineate the self-assembly-driven optoelectronic properties of PT-peptide and PT-polymer conjugates, taking examples from recent literature reports. PT-peptide conjugates made by both covalent and noncovalent approaches are discussed. Poly(3-thiophene acetic acid) (P3TAA) covalently coupled with Gly-Gly-His tripeptide, C-protected and deprotected tripeptide H2N-F-F-V-OMe, etc. exhibits self-assembly-driven absorbance, fluorescence, photocurrent, and electronic properties. Noncovalent PT-peptide conjugates produced via ionic, H-bonding, and π-stacking interactions show tunable morphology and optoelectronic properties by varying the composition of a component. PT conjugated with Alzheimer's disease peptide (KLVFFAE, Aβ16-22) shows enhanced photocatalytic water splitting, cationic PT(CPT-I)-perylene bisimide-appended dipeptide (PBI-DY), and anionic PT-perylene diimide-appended cationic peptide (PBI-NH3+) conjugates and exhibits self-assembly-driven enhanced photoswitching and organic mixed electronic and ionic conductivity (OMEIC) properties. In the PT-polymer conjugates, self-assembly-driven optoelectronic properties of covalently produced PT-random copolymers, PT-block copolymers, PT-graft-random copolymers, and PT-graft-block copolymer conjugates are discussed. The HOMO-LUMO levels of hyperbranched polymers are optimized to obtain better power conversion efficiency (PCE) in the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cell than in linear polymers, and P3TAA-ran-P3HT (43 mol % P3TAA) conjugated with MAPbI3 perovskite exhibits higher PCE (10%) than that with only P3TAA hole-transporting material. In the ampholytic polythiophene (APT), on increasing pH, the morphology changes from the vesicle to fibrillar network for the dethreading of the PT chain, resulting in a red shift of the absorbance peak, an enormous increase in PL intensity, lowering of the charge transfer resistance, and an induction of Warburg impedance for the release of quencher I- ions. The PT-g-(PDMAEMA-co-PGLU-HEM) graft copolymer self-assembles with Con-A lectin, causing fluorescence quenching, and acts as a sensor for Con-A with a LOD of 57 mg/L. Varying sequences of the block copolymer containing pH-responsive PDMAEMA and temperature-responsive PDEGMEM grafted to the PT backbone shows different self-assembly, optical, electronic, and photocurrent properties depending on the proximity and preponderance of the block sequence on the PT backbone.

All-in-One fast response electrochromic devices based on PAAm/P2W18 hydrogel without additional electrolytes

All-in-one electrochromic devices (ECDs) have potential applications in wearable stretchable electronics. However, ECDs today are inflexible, slow to respond and at risk of electrolyte leakage. We have prepared a novel electrochromic hydrogel by introducing polyoxometalates [P2W18O62] 6− (P2W18) into polyacrylamide (PAAm) via ionic and covalent cross-linking. Negatively charged P2W18 have ionic conductive properties, thus the hydrogel is able to undergo electrochromic behavior without the addition of electrolytes. PAAm/P2W18 hydrogel has good flexibility and tensile properties, high transparency and a simple preparation process. The PAAm/P2W18 hydrogel is reversibly switchable between colorless and dark blue over a voltage range from 0 V to −2.8 V. The ECDs had a large transmittance contrast (53.7 %), fast response time (coloring/bleaching times of 6.9 s and 5.6 s) and satisfactory coloring efficiency (125.5 cm2/C). PAAm/P2W18 hydrogel has good open-circuit memory properties which maintains coloring state after 7 days of power off. The sandwich-structured (ITO/hydrogel/ITO) electrochromic device based on this hydrogel is simple to manufacture, low in cost and fast in response, which have potential applications in the fields of smart windows, energy-saving displays, and anti-glare mirrors.

Lean-water hydrogel electrolyte with improved ion conductivity for dendrite-free zinc-Ion batteries

Although rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) are regarded as promising energy storage devices, the uncontrollable Zn dendrite and undesirable side reactions severely limit their practical applications. Herein, an anionic hydrogel electrolyte PAM/SA with 3D porous structures is developed by integrating sodium alginate (SA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) networks for highly reversible Zn plating/stripping. Mechanically enhanced and lean-water PAM/SA hydrogel with anionic chains for constructing ionic channels and molecular lubrication films, which facilitate Zn2+ migration for a high ionic conductivity (5.4 S m−1) and Zn2+ transference number (0.86) even under lean-water conditions (about 60%). Based on the experimental and theoretical analysis, the SA chain with strong coordination ability endows PAM/SA with improved desolvation kinetics and the ability to regulate the electric field intensity at the electrode/electrolyte interface, which is beneficial for suppressing side reactions and facilitating directional Zn deposition. Subsequently, the symmetric Zn//Zn cell based on PAM/SA hydrogel electrolyte delivers stable cycles for over 1800 h. The assembled Zn//V2O5 battery based on PAM/SA reveals a high specific capacity and a long cycle life. This work provides a new insight for developing hydrogel electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and lean-water properties toward stable Zn anode

Asymmetric ionogel electrolyte with an ultrathin metal–organic framework layer for lithium dendrite inhibition in solid-state lithium-metal batteries

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are used to prevent internal short circuits caused by the growth of lithium dendrites in solid-state lithium-metal batteries (SSLMBs). Ionogel electrolytes are new polymeric SSEs with outstanding processability, excellent flexibility, and superior ionic conductivity. Lithium-ion transport in ionogel electrolytes depends on ionic liquid (IL) content; however, increasing the IL content improves ionic conductivity but sharply decreases mechanical properties, thus limiting the ability to resist lithium dendrites. Thus, ionogel electrolytes must strike a balance between ionic conductivity and mechanical properties. Herein, we adopt a new strategy to suppress the growth of lithium dendrites by in situ polymerizing an ultrathin metal–organic framework (MOF) layer (9.8 μm) onto a highly ionic conductive ionogel electrolyte. The ionogel electrolyte provides an asymmetric SSE (ASSE) with a remarkable ionic conductivity of 4.8 × 10−4 S cm−1 (30 °C), whereas the ultrathin MOF layer regulates uniform dissolution/deposition of lithium and inhibits lithium dendrite growth, thereby increasing critical current density of the ASSE to 0.65 mA cm−2. An SSLMB assembled with the ASSE and LiFePO4 exhibits excellent performance and cycling stability, maintaining a specific capacity of 125.4 mAh g−1 after 500 cycles at 0.3C.

Bioinspired 3D printed elastomer-hydrogel hybrid with robust interfacial bonding for flexible ionotronics

Hydrogels are widely used in flexible ionotronics due to their continuous conductive phase and good biocompatibility. However, their poor mechanical properties affect their stability and lifespan. It is a significant challenge to prepare hydrogels with both high conductivity and mechanical strength, as improving the mechanical properties often results in a tighter network, which reduces electrical conductivity. Human skin is composed of a stiff collagen fibril scaffold for resisting external damage, and a soft matrix that detect various stimuli through ion transport. Herein, inspired by the structure of human skin, a hydrogel composite with remarkable mechanical properties, high ionic conductivity, and self-healing property is prepared. The composite structure with 3D printed elastomeric skeleton and hydrogel matrix, addresses both the contradiction between the ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of hydrogels, as well as the difficulty of realizing complex macrostructures of the skeleton. The issue of weak interface in composites is resolved by creating interfacial covalent bonds. The composite’s self-healing property, combined with a robust interface, ensure the stability and longevity of the composite when used as flexible sensors. This novel approach of creating robust interface is also employed in the encapsulation of hydrogels and the fabrication of flexible microcircuits.

Enhanced ionic conductivity and excellent lithium stability of garnet-type Li6.55Ga0.15La3Zr2O12 solid-state electrolytes by magnesium doping

Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) garnet solid electrolyte has garnered significant attention as a highly promising material owing to its exceptional electrochemical properties. Nevertheless, it encounters challenges such as low ionic conductivity and inadequate interfacial properties compared to liquid electrolytes. In this study, we employed simultaneous doping of Mg2+ and Ga3+ to obtain a dense LLZO material with enhanced Li+ conductivity. By utilizing the conventional solid-state reaction method, garnet-structured oxides with a chemical composition of Li6.55+2xGa0.15La3Zr2-xMgxO12 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) were synthesized. The phase composition, morphology, and lithium-ion conductivity were characterized to investigate the synergistic effects of two dopants on solid electrolytes. The density of Ga and Mg co-doped garnet pellets reached as high as 96 % - 97 %, and the peak lithium-ion conductivity of Li6.65Ga0.15La3Zr1.95Mg0.05O12 electrolyte at room temperature was obtained to be 1.13 mS cm−1. Additionally, when employed in a symmetrical Li/LLZO/Li cell, this Ga and Mg co-doped garnet electrolyte exhibited excellent electrochemical stability to lithium metal and demonstrated good performance for more than 200 h in the lithium plating/stripping cycle at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2. The LiFePO4/Ga0.15Mg0.05/Au/Li cell delivers an initial discharge capacity of 153 mAh g−1 and retains a good capacity of 143.8 mAh g−1 after 30 charge-discharge cycles.

Polymer/cement composite electrolyte with high strength and high ionic conductivity for structural supercapacitors

All-solid-state structural supercapacitors (ASSC) based on polymer/cement electrolytes (PCE) are promising energy storage devices in buildings due to the tremendous demand for zero-energy buildings. However, the challenge of PCE remains in well balancing the mechanical properties and ionic conductivity. Herein, an integrated electro-mechanical PCE introducing PAM (20 wt%, synthesized by in-situ polymerization) and PAM (5 wt%, commercial) simultaneously largely improves the ionic conductivity (68.54 mS/cm) and mechanical properties (47.96 MPa). Surprisingly, PAM (20% wt%, in-situ polymerization synthesis) and PAM (5% wt%, commercial) were introduced simultaneously to modify PCE, which not only had a synergistic effect on compressive strength but also had a synergistic effect on ionic conductivity. Moreover, an assembled ASSC based on 20-AM-5-PAM PCE exhibits excellent performance with an areal energy density of 25.17 μWh/cm2 at a power density of 50 μW/cm2 and ～96% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. These results demonstrate the great potential for the application of 20-AM-5-PAM PCE in high-strength and large-volume building structure energy storage devices.
