Impact of Six Sigma critical success factors on productivity improvement through absorptive capacity in the manufacturing industry in Saudi Arabia

Previous studies have acknowledged the role of Six Sigma in productivity improvement, but the implication of absorptive capacity (ACAP) has yet to be fully addressed. Accordingly, this paper investigates the mediating effect of ACAP on the link between Six Sigma's critical success factors and productivity improvement. The hypothesised relationships were tested with data collected from quality managers in 167 manufacturing companies in Saudi Arabia. The result of PLS-SEM indicates that ACAP significantly mediates the influences of training and education, top management commitment and involvement, project selection and prioritisation and organisation resources on productivity improvement. However, the mediating effect of ACAP was not supported for the path between linking Six Sigma to business strategy and productivity improvement. Moreover, ACAP was significantly related to productivity improvement. The implications of our findings on the firm's productivity improvement and operation management literature were discussed, and the relevant suggestions were offered for future research.

Towards autonomous operations in the mining industry: the role of human factors.

In the past 30 years, Latin American mining industry passed under the sign of technological advances; first with the incorporation of mechanized equipment and then teleoperation and automation in many aspects of the excavation process. In that respect, Chile is the leading country, although lately Peru, Mexico and Brazil are showing a growing interest in introducing new technologies in their mining operations. Positive aspects of these changes can be seen in continuous improvements of operations and processes, increased in innovation and improvements in safety. However, with few exceptions, the involvement of top management in enabling innovation and rapid technological implementation has often been insufficient. This, however, is changing dramatically as mining companies look towards automatization to maximize productivity and profitability, remove mining personnel from dangerous environments as well as bypass human limitations to meet new challenges, which would allow the humans to make strategic decisions while being supported by the machines and the connected environment. This paper examines the human factors issues related to the implementation of automated system in general with some examples from Chilean open pit and underground mines.

Analysis of Top Management Support on the Quality of Accounting Information System and the Impact on the Quality of Accounting Information

Top management support in the accounting information system is one of the factors influencing the quality of the accounting information system. Top management involvement is essential to the success of an organization's accounting information system. The fundamental role of accounting information systems in an organization is to produce quality accounting information. A quality accounting information system is able to get value to the organization by providing accurate and timely information. Quality information is useful to assist information users in making useful decisions.The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between top management support on the quality of the accounting information system and its impact on the quality of accounting information at BUMN Majalengka Regency. The method used in this is descriptive verification with a quantitative approach. Test analysis using Path Analysis using SPSS v25 software. The results of this study indicate that top management support has a significant influence on the quality of accounting information systems and the quality of accounting information systems affects the quality of accounting information.

Sustainable industry 4.0 – an exploratory study for uncovering the drivers for integration

PurposeThe concept of sustainable manufacturing has been adopted by manufacturing organizations to develop eco-friendlier products and processes. In recent times, industries are progressing toward Industry 4.0 (I4.0). Guided with smart intelligent devices, I4.0 can possibly decrease excess production, material movement and consumption of energy. If so, it is hypothesized that there is a good synergy between I4.0 and sustainability, which warrants an integrated approach for implementation. This amalgamation is termed as “Sustainable industry 4.0.” Hence, this paper aims to systematically identify and analyze the drivers for this integration.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents the analysis of 20 drivers identified from literature review for simultaneous deployment of I4.0 and sustainable manufacturing. Interpretive structural modeling (ISM) is used to derive the structural model for analyzing the causal association between drivers. Cross-Impact Matrix Multiplication Applied to Classification (MICMAC) analysis is being performed to group the drivers.FindingsThe results showed that the dominant drivers derived are societal pressure and public awareness (D18), government policies on support I4.0 (D12), top management involvement and support (D15) and government promotions and regulations (D16). Also, the MICMAC analysis revealed many driving, dependent, linkage and autonomous drivers.Research limitations/implicationsThe opinion from experts with combined expertise on I4.0 and sustainability was obtained. The respondent size could be increased in future studies.Practical implicationsThe study has been done based on inputs from industry practitioners. Managerial and practical implications are presented. ISM shows that the drivers for deploying sustainable I4.0 are highly inter-related. It also reveals the pre-requisites for each level of the drivers.Originality/valueThe idea of analyzing the drivers for sustainable I4.0 is the original contribution of the authors.

Avoiding warning letters in pharmaceutical industry: A qualitative study in the Indian context

The purpose of this paper is to identify the cause and effect of increased number of warning letters (www.fda.gov) issued by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of United States year after year in spite of clarity in the guidance published by the agency. Increased number of warning letters is matter of concern for the drug product / drug substance manufacturer, drug authority and end consumers (patients). Author identified six pharma professionals through their personal contacts and interviewed each of them. Poor quality management systems and lack of management oversight were found to be the key reasons for issuance of warning letters. Issuance of warning letters had adverse financial impact on business, delay in approvals thus loss of business opportunity and negative image of the organization among regulators, customers. Quality culture in the organization plays an important role to ensure regulatory compliance and building up the right quality culture in the organization is vital. Involvement of top management and participation in the management review meetings is essential for monitoring the compliance level in the organization.

MADRASAH TRANSFORMATION MODEL OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY ERA

Madrasah organizational transformation in the information technology era is not always successful, there are important things that must be considered by organizations, namely: the possibility of rejection of the transformation. Organizational transformation done by reengineering, for example, has a risk of failure caused by resistance to changes in the status quo. That is, if the organization can reduce the risk of resistance to organizational transformation, the organizational transformation will be successful.
 In addition, to succeed in organizational transformation, support and involvement of top management is needed, a clear vision of change, a model of change especially for Human Resources is planned carefully, involving all parties at various levels of management in planning and implementing organizational transformation, employees must also be more empowered.

Evaluating Sustainable Lean Six Sigma enablers using fuzzy DEMATEL: A case of an Indian manufacturing organization

The survival of the manufacturing organizations has been challenged by global competition, dynamic customer requirements, and limited natural resources. Manufacturing organizations need to adopt innovative strategies to overcome such challenges. Lean Six Sigma is one of the key business strategies which has been employed by manufacturing organizations to improve their operational performance. The integration of Sustainability with Lean Six Sigma has created interest among the researchers and practitioners to improve sustainable performance. For any manufacturing organization, it is critical to identify the enablers for the successful Sustainable Lean Six Sigma implementation. The purpose of the present study is to identify and evaluate the enablers of Sustainable Lean Six Sigma. The enablers of Sustainable Lean Six Sigma in Indian manufacturing organizations have not been explored in past studies, which motivates the present case study. The enablers for Sustainable Lean Six Sigma implementation were identified through the combined approach of literature review and experts’ opinions. Fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory technique was applied to evaluate the enablers for Sustainable Lean Six Sigma implementation in an electric component manufacturing organization. The relationships among the prominent cause enablers and effect enablers are established through the causal diagram. The top management commitment and involvement was found as the most significant enabler, followed by organizational readiness to implement Sustainable Lean Six Sigma, environmental management system. The present study is one of the initial studies to evaluate integrated (Sustainability and Lean Six Sigma) enablers for Sustainable Lean Six Sigma implementation. The results of the present study will assist the researchers and practitioners in implementing Sustainable Lean Six Sigma in manufacturing organizations by understanding the mutual relationships among the enablers.

Business performance is influenced by several factors, one of which is the innovation of sales ideas. Previous studies also explain the role of innovation in determining the performance of the business being undertaken. Some researches on the role of innovation in determining business performance emphasizes aspects of top management involvement, resources, existing technological capabilities and organizational culture. This research aims to analyse the determinants of business performance factors, especially on the role of innovation as a mediating factor. This research is quantitative using Partial Least Square (PLS)-Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) models. The results of this study explain that Innovation and Management Capability do not have an influence on business performance in the SME accessories gadget at ITC Roxy Mas. However, entrepreneurial orientation has an influence on business performance in the gadget accessories SMEs at ITC Roxy Mas. Furthermore, entrepreneurial orientation and management ability have an influence on innovation in the gadget accessories SMEs at ITC Roxy Mas. The results of the indirect effect explain the entrepreneurial orientation and management capabilities that are mediated by innovation do not have an influence on business performance in the gadget accessories SMEs at ITC Roxy Mas.

Barriers to Total Quality Management for sustainability in Indian organizations

PurposeThe paper aims to identify key human and operational focused barriers to the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM). It develops a comprehensive structural relationship between various barriers to successfully implement TQM for sustainability in Indian organizations.Design/methodology/approachWith the help of expert opinions and extant literature review, we identified the case of TQM failure companies and barriers to implement TQM effectively. Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) and fuzzy MICMAC techniques are employed to develop a structural model and the identified barriers are categorized based on their dependence and driving power in the various categories.FindingsFrom the intensive case analysis, we identify fourteen barriers that constrain the successful implementation of TQM. The findings also provide a hierarchy of barriers in which the absence of top management involvement and ineffective leadership are the human barriers having the highest dependence.Research limitations/implicationsThe critical inputs show the implementation of TQM in the firms being more proactive and well prepared in the selected five companies. The study's emphasis on barriers will help organizations in implementing TQM for better sustainability in an organizational context.Originality/valueIn the successful implementation of TQM, barriers need to be identified because failure has often eliminated the organizations from the market. Thus, TQM is the source of strength to achieve higher productivity, profitability, and sustainable business performance. The barriers must be identified to improve organizational performance to contribute to sustainable development.

A Coaching Culture Definition: An Industry-Based Perspective From Managers as Coaches

Despite increasingly common references to “coaching cultures,” little empirical research has been conducted to understand the nature of coaching cultures. Our study aims to address this gap with a study of Australian managers. In their responses to open-ended questions, managers gave us insight into their experiences of coaching cultures. The elements needed to create a coaching culture are consistent use of different types of coaching across the organization, a formalized process, provision of appropriate training and resources, the involvement of top management, transparency of benefits, and the alignment with organizational values such as ownership, empowerment, collaboration, and respect. Managers should take a proactive role in the creation of coaching cultures within their organizations, including acting as coaching role models, actively engaging in training themselves, and promoting the benefits of such a culture.

One Size Fits All? How Does Firm Heterogeneity Affect ERP Adaptation and Firm Performance?

A cause of high ERP failure rate is the misfit between organization processes and ERP systems. To solve the misfit problem, literature suggests two adaptation approaches: conducting business process reengineering (BPR) to fit organization processes into ERP systems, or customizing ERP systems to fit organizational processes. However, extant studies seldom explore how firms should choose between the two adaptation approaches and adjustment level based on their heterogeneous firm characteristics. Through the lens of contingency based task-technology-fit (TTF) theory, this study collects data from 150 U.S. manufacturing firms that use ERP systems, and empirically investigates how firms could choose a suitable adaptation approach between BPR and system customization while considering their heterogeneous characteristics, such as firm size, industry, top management involvement, big-bang or phase-in implementation speed. Consequently, this study further examines how such choice of different adaptation strategies and adaptation level affect firms’ final firm performance. Our results show that industry, top management involvement, and implementation speed significantly affect firms’ choice of adaptation approaches and adaptation level, while their choices also significantly affect final firm performance.

Lean Six Sigma (LSS) is a breakthrough approach that reduces defects, waste, and process variation to improve productivity and quality. To attain the optimistic results, it is essential to gaze at critical success factors (CSFs) that subsequently lead to successful execution. The present study investigates the CSFs which facilitate the effective LSS execution in micro-small and medium enterprises. Out of 16 success factors, ten CSFs are finalised through the relative importance index method and prioritised by best worst method (BWM). The BWM is a novel multi-criteria decision-making approach that requires fewer pairwise comparison matrixes and provides excellent results. The outcomes reveal that the top three ranked CSFs are top management commitment and involvement, organisational infrastructure, and LSS awareness program and training with weights 0.3875, 0.1527, and 0.1137, respectively. The outcomes facilitate the managers of case organisation with prominent CSFs, which will help in planning and successful execution of LSS.

Meninjau Aspek Kinerja Sistem Informasi Akuntansi Pada Badan Layanan Umum Daerah (BLUD) Rumah Sakit Umum (RSU) Jampangkulon

The purpose of this study is to determine the factors that influence the performance of accounting information systems. The factors studied were information technology, top management support and human resource competencies at the Jampang Kulon General Hospital. The research model used is a qualitative method with data collection namely interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis techniques used are: 1) data collection, 2) data reduction, 3) data presentation, 4) inference and verification. The results showed that: 1) information technology was strongly supported in processing accounting data at Jampang Kulon Hospital so that the financial statements needed by users could be quickly obtained. 2) The involvement of top management plays a very important role in the development of information systems by providing the resources needed by the facility, so that the performance of the accounting information system produced is of very high quality and the performance of the Hospital will increase. 3) Competence of Human Resources who have the knowledge and skills in using information technology play an important role in supporting the performance of accounting information systems that are produced increasingly better.

Networks, homogeneity and gender in Icelandic business elites

This paper examines business elites in the context of social networks, identity and residential homogeneity. Our focus is gender diversity in business elites and how social activities conducive to networking interact with residential homogeneity. We find that the greater the involvement of top managers in local social activities, the greater the residential homogeneity. This relationship is stronger for women than for men, even though the individual measures are similar for both genders. We suggest that local social activities may foster a shared identity that is especially important for women, as they lack a shared gender identity with men in the group. The paper adds to both theoretical and practical knowledge on the lack diversity in business elites.

Total Quality Management Practices in Construction Project Delivery in South Africa

Due to its ability to provide quality through effective management practices, Total Quality Management (TQM) has attracted significant attention in most academic discuss in recent times. This attention became necessary as a result of the overarching need to increase the quality of products being delivered within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry (AEC). Based on this knowledge, this study assessed TQM practices in construction project delivery in Gauteng, South Africa. The study adopted a quantitative approach through a questionnaire survey, and information was harnessed from construction participants involved in the delivery of civil engineering projects within the study area. The data gathered were analysed using percentage, mean score and standard deviation, while the reliability of the research questionnaire was tested using Cronbach alpha test. The findings of the study revealed that the most adopted TQM practices are customer focus, supplier quality management, strategic planning, and employee relations. In order to improve the adoption of TQM practices, measures such as ensuring customer involvement, top management involvement, and commitment, education, and training of engineers on TQM practices, effective customer-supplier relationship, effective communication (internal and external), and primary customer focus, are important. This study adds value to the body of knowledge as it gives an insight on the TQM practices being adopted in the delivery of civil engineering projects within the study area as well as the measures to be put in place in order to ensure improved adoption of TQM.

Exploring the Determinants of ERP Adoption Intention

Using data collected from 193 ERP users collected through a web-based survey within an Australian state emergency service organization, we will develop and test a research model taking relevant constructs from TAM and others social factors such as subjective norm, top management involvement, user involvement along with perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and attitude into account. We will specifically apply the REBUS-PLS method to detect two distinctive groups of users. In fact, this analysis highlights different groups of users on these links: user involvement and attitude; user involvement and perceived ease of use; top management involvement and user involvement; top management involvement and attitude; top management involvement and perceived usefulness; subjective norm and perceived usefulness.

Comités de retour d’expérience (CREX) dans les centres de radiothérapie français en 2019

Ten years after the beginning of CREX in radiotherapy departments we wanted to know about users’ feeling. We sent a survey to 168 centers in the whole country and a hundred of them answer. The time, top management's involvement and professionals’ training seem to be the key success factors. Systemic analysis methods and mainly the Orion© one are not identified as an issue. The main challenge for the next years will be the effectiveness check of actions.

Value creation through quality and innovation – a case study on Portugal

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the best way to create value in Portugal through quality and innovation and also to check what needs to be improved.Design/methodology/approachA questionnaire was applied to population of 152 companies, with the research and development (R&D) management certified by Portuguese Standard NP 4457. The final sample was 66 companies, which correspond to 45 percent of the population. Statistical analysis of the data collected was performed using IBM SPSS Statistical Software.FindingsThe authors highlighted the main reasons/motivations that led companies to implement the NP 4457, which were, among others, competitive advantage and creating value. The systematization of information and the generation and management of ideas were highlighted as the main advantages. The lack of methodologies for innovation management and knowledge management was the difficulty experienced in the implementation of NP 4457. Portugal needs to increase patent registration and it also needs to know how to take advantage of the investment made in R&D, in order to decrease the unit cost of knowledge. Portuguese engineering should be more about product design than production processes. The involvement of top management must be greater.Originality/valueThis investigation contributes to the innovation and quality body of knowledge, since it explores the complementarity between the two concepts as sources of value creation. This case study is one of the first Portuguese empirical research works about value creation through quality and innovation in Portugal. It also allows to know in detail the Portuguese business reality in terms of innovation management.
