Bumble bee diet breadth increases with local abundance and phenophase duration, not intraspecific variation in body size

Patterns of abundance across space and time, and intraspecific variation in body size, are two species attributes known to influence diet breadth and the structure of interaction networks. Yet, the relative influence of these attributes on diet breadth is often assumed to be equal among taxonomic groups, and the relationship between intraspecific variation in body size on interaction patterns is frequently neglected. We observed bee–flower interactions in multiple locations across Montana, USA, for two growing seasons and measured spatial and temporal patterns of abundance, along with interspecific and intraspecific variation in body size for prevalent species. We predicted that the association between spatial and temporal patterns of abundance and intraspecific variation in body size, and diet breadth, would be stronger for bumble bee compared to non-bumble bee species, because species with flexible diets and long activity periods can interact with more food items. Bumble bees had higher local abundance, occurred in many local communities, more intraspecific variation in body size, and longer phenophases compared to non-bumble bee species, but only local abundance and phenophase duration had a stronger positive association with the diet breadth of bumble bee compared to non-bumble bee species. Communities with a higher proportion of bumble bees also had higher intraspecific variation in body size at the network-level, and network-level intraspecific variation in body size was positively correlated with diet generalization. Our findings highlight that the association between species attributes and diet breadth changes depending on the taxonomic group, with implications for the structure of interaction networks.

Pollinator intraspecific body size variation and sociality influence their interactions with plants

Abstract Species morphological and behavioural traits are key determinants of which pollinator species interact with which plant species. However, individuals within species are not identical in their traits and this diversity could help us understand plant–pollinator interaction patterns. Using three independent data sets, we assessed whether bee intraspecific body size variation (ITV) and sociality influenced pollinator interaction specialisation, intraspecific niche partitioning, centrality in the interaction network and phylogenetic diversity of the plants visited. We found that solitary pollinators were more specialised in their interactions with plants and had lower intraspecific niche partitioning compared to social pollinators. Furthermore, solitary pollinators with higher ITV had higher centrality in the network and visited a higher phylogenetic diversity of plants compared to solitary species with lower ITV, whereas the opposite pattern emerged for social pollinators. Pollinator ITV did not differ between social and solitary bee species. Our findings show that the effect of pollinator body size variation on plant–pollinator interactions depends on pollinator species sociality. Specifically, solitary pollinators with higher ITV and social pollinators with lower ITV seem to be the most important contributors to maintaining the evolutionary diversity of the plant community, and also the species with the largest potential to affect (via cascade effects) the entire plant–pollinator network. Increases in intraspecific body size variation are common among North American mammals and birds between 1880 and 2020.

Many studies have documented the average body size of animals declining over time. Compared to mean body size, less is known about long-term changes in intraspecific trait variation (ITV), which is also important to understanding species' ability to cope with environmental challenges. On the basis of 393,499 specimen records from 380 species collected in North America between 1880 and 2020, we found that body size ITV increased by 9.59% for mammals (n = 302) and 30.67% for birds (n = 78); human-harvested species had higher probability of ITV increase. The observed increasing ITV in many species suggests possible niche expansion and potential buffering effects against downsizing but it risks increased maladaptation to rapidly changing environments. The results demonstrate that trait mean and variance do not necessarily respond in similar ways to anthropogenic pressures and both should be considered.

Unveiling the environmental drivers of intraspecific body size variation in terrestrial vertebrates

AbstractAimWhether intraspecific spatial patterns in body size are generalizable across species remains contentious, as well as the mechanisms underlying these patterns. Here we test several hypotheses explaining within‐species body size variation in terrestrial vertebrates including the heat balance, seasonality, resource availability and water conservation hypotheses for ectotherms, and the heat conservation, heat dissipation, starvation resistance and resource availability hypotheses for endotherms.LocationGlobal.Time period1970–2016.Major taxa studiedAmphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.MethodsWe collected 235,905 body size records for 2,229 species (amphibians = 36; reptiles = 81; birds = 1,545; mammals = 567) and performed a phylogenetic meta‐analysis of intraspecific correlations between body size and environmental variables. We further tested whether correlations differ between migratory and non‐migratory bird and mammal species, and between thermoregulating and thermoconforming ectotherms.ResultsFor bird species, smaller intraspecific body size was associated with higher mean and maximum temperatures and lower resource seasonality. Size–environment relationships followed a similar pattern in resident and migratory birds, but the effect of resource availability on body size was slightly positive only for non‐migratory birds. For mammals, we found that intraspecific body size was smaller with lower resource availability and seasonality, with this pattern being more evident in sedentary than migratory species. No clear size–environment relationships were found for reptiles and amphibians.Main conclusionsWithin‐species body size variation across endotherms is explained by disparate underlying mechanisms for birds and mammals. Heat conservation (Bergmann's rule) and heat dissipation are the dominant processes explaining biogeographic intraspecific body size variation in birds, whereas in mammals, body size clines are mostly explained by the starvation resistance and resource availability hypotheses. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind species adaptations to the environment across their geographic distributions.

Latitudinal gradients in body size and sexual size dimorphism in fleas: males drive Bergmann's pattern.

We tested for the effects of latitude and geographic range size (GRS) on body size, leg length, and sexual size dimorphism (SSD) across 103 species of fleas, taking into account phylogenetic between-species relationships. When the data on body size were combined for males and females, the positive correlation between body size and latitude, but not GRS, was revealed. When the analysis was restricted to one sex only, the effect of latitude appeared to be non-significant for females, whereas male body size increased with an increase in latitude. Intraspecific body size variation was not associated with either the latitude or the latitudinal span of the geographic range, independently of which data subset was analyzed. No evidence of association between size-independent tibia length and latitude was found for either females, males, or both sexes combined. The degree of SSD decreased with a decrease in latitude but was not affected by GRS. We conclude that macroecological patterns might be manifested differently in males and females. This should be kept in mind while searching for these patterns.

Impact of climatic factors on sexual size dimorphism in ground beetle Pterostichus melanarius (Illiger, 1798) (Coleoptera, Carabidae)

Intra-specific body size variation in ground beetles is studied insufficiently, especially in response to climatic factors. Even less studied is the sexual dimorphism (hereinafter referred to as the SSD), its geographic variation patterns and response to climatic factors. We sampled ground beetles Pterostichus melanarius in 15 regions of Northern Eurasia along latitude and longitude gradients (in 17 degrees and 121 degrees, respectively), including differing habitats (open and forested) in the spectrum of anthropogenic impact (cities, suburbs, arable lands and natural). 7677 specimens were measured by six morphometric traits – elytra, pronotum, head length and width, distance between eyes. Our software applied made it possible both to catch the smallest changes in the size of traits in females and males, and to determine their direction. Temperature related factors mostly reduced beetles traits values, but precipitation related factors – enlarged them. Elytra and pronotum parameters were the traits which response differently in males and females to climatic factors, these traits showed more pronounced SSD. Head parameters showed SSD in response to those factors too. That response had the similar direction and was expressed more, either in females or males. The latter processes implemented to a greater extent in relation to the temperature including bioclimatic factors.

Ecological specialisation and range size determine intraspecific body size variation in a speciose clade of insect herbivores

The body size of an adult insect is strongly determined by the environmental factors to which it is exposed during growth and development. Insect species confronted with a high environmental variability across their geographical range (i.e. wide ecological niche breadth) may therefore reveal broader variation in body size than those species which are more specialised (i.e. narrow ecological niche). In this study, we aim to investigate whether characteristics related to the ecological niche breadth of a holometabolous insect species (i.e. its ecological specialisation) affect its intraspecific variation in adult body size. By using European geometrid moths as a model group, we specifically tested whether latitudinal range size, larval resource use and voltinism affect intraspecific body size variation. We hypothesised that body size variation will increase along with latitudinal range and larval diet breadth. We further expected that univoltine species reveal a lower body size variation compared to those with multiple generations per year. To test these hypotheses, we compiled a comprehensive trait database for 631 species of European geometrid moths from literature, including information on adult body size, life history and distribution. We further reconstructed a molecular phylogeny including all analysed geometrid species and applied phylogenetic comparative methods in order to test our predictions. In support of our hypotheses, we found that intraspecific size variation is positively related to latitudinal range size and larval diet breadth, and that multivoltine species reveal a higher heterogeneity in body size than taxa with a strictly univoltine life style. Based on our results, we demonstrated that intraspecific body size variation in geometrid moths is negatively related to ecological specialisation. We further suggest that increased variation in body size with increasing niche breadth is a general pattern, which likely applies to many other insect groups as well. This assumption, however, demands further empirical scrutiny.

The influence of body size and phylogeny on trabecular microstructure in the proximal femur and humerus of rodents and primates

Life history theory states that organisms maximize their fitness via energetic trade‐offs between various biological functions. It has been well‐established that life history strategy is related to intraspecific variation in body size and that body size predicts some bone microstructural properties, but the relationship between life history strategy and skeletal variation has not been sufficiently examined across multiple mammalian clades. Generally, small‐bodied mammals have “fast” life histories and faster growth rates than large‐bodied mammals, meaning small mammals deposit bone tissue at a faster rate, which may affect skeletal morphology. Therefore, the goal of this study was to conduct a preliminary analysis of trabecular bone structure in the rodent and primate humerus and femur to evaluate the influence of life history traits, particularly body size, on bone properties in a phylogenetically diverse sample. Using a sample of 67 size‐matched adult rodent and primate individuals from 8 extant rodent genera (N=26) and 10 extant primate genera (N=41) ranging in body size from 0.04kg to 70kg, we analyzed trabecular bone structure in the proximal femoral and humeral head. Regression analyses were used to assess associations between trabecular bone properties and body size and one‐way ANOVAs were used to compare bone properties between rodents and primates across three size‐matched classes.Regression results are consistent with previous primate and mammal studies. Bone volume fraction (BV/TV) scales with weak positive allometry in both groups and both elements except for the rodent humerus, which scales isometrically. Degree of anisotropy (DA) varies across all groups and shows no consistent relationship with body size. Trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) increase with body size, while connectivity density (Conn.D) and bone surface density (BS/BV) decrease with body size across both clades and elements. In both groups and both bones, Tb.Th, Tb.Sp, and Conn.D scale with strong negative allometry while BS/BV scales with strong positive allometry. ANOVAs reveal that Tb.Th and Tb.Sp are higher in the primate femur than in the rodent femur for medium and large size classes, while Conn. D is higher in the rodent femur for medium and large size classes. Other bone properties do not show consistent patterns of differences between primates and rodents. Overall, while overlapping confidence intervals for all slopes suggest body size scales similarly with these bone properties across clades, ANOVA results suggest that medium and large bodied rodents have thinner, more numerous trabeculae in the femur compared to similarly‐sized primates. Further investigation is necessary to elucidate the biological significance of this result and the underlying mechanisms driving the observed phenomenon.

Body Size Variation in a Social Sweat Bee, Halictus ligatus (Halictidae, Apoidea), across Urban Environments.

Simple SummaryMany animal species that dwell in cities have altered aspects of their behavior, morphology, and physiology in order to survive in human-dominated environments. One way in which animals can adapt to survive in novel habitats is by shifting their body size. Body size is an important and flexible trait for insects because the ability to vary body size is linked to better survival and reproduction. In this study, we quantified body size variation in a species of sweat bee and compared the variation between bees residing in three different urban cities. Though studies have assessed urban bee body size previously, this is the first to compare bees from different cities. Similar to the human experience, no two cities are alike for bees. Therefore, we predicted that bees would show differences in the spread of body size in order to adapt to each unique city. We found that bees in three different environments all showed high variation in body size, but that the variation differed depending on location. This study is one of the first multi-city studies, and this is a trend we hope continues as urban research advances.High morphological variation is often associated with species longevity, and it is hypothesized that urban-dwelling species may require more plasticity in functional traits such as body size in order to maximize fitness in heterogeneous environments. There has been published research regarding the functional trait diversity of urban bee pollinators. However, no two cities are identical, so the implementation of multi-city studies is vital. Therefore, we compared body size variation in female Halicus ligatus sweat bees from May–October 2016 from three distinct Midwestern United States cities: Chicago, Detroit, and Saint Louis. Additionally, to elucidate potentially influential environmental factors, we assessed the relationship between temperature and measured body size. We collected bees in community gardens and urban farms and measured their head width and intertegular distance as a proxy for overall body size. We utilized an ANCOVA to determine whether body size variation differed significantly across the three surveyed cities. Results indicated that H. ligatus females in Chicago, Detroit, and Saint Louis had significantly different body size ranges. These findings highlight the importance of intraspecific body size variation and support our prediction that bees from different urban environments will have distinct ranges in body size due to local ecological factors affecting their populations. Additionally, we found a significant influence of temperature, though this is probably not the only important ecological characteristic impacting bee body size. Therefore, we also provided a list of predictions for the future study of specific variables that are likely to impact functional trait diversity in urban bees.

The relationship between body size and flight power output in the mango stem borer (Batocera rufomaculata)

Adult body size in insects can be influenced by environmental conditions during larval growth. The effect of such intraspecific variation in body mass on flight performance is poorly understood. In Batocera rufomaculata, a large tree boring beetle, adults emerging from larvae that developed in a dying host tree, and therefore, under nutrient-deprived diet conditions, are smaller but have an elevated long-distance flight capability compared to larger conspecifics that developed in viable host trees. The improved endurance for long-distance flight in the smaller individuals appears to contradict the interspecific trend in flying animals of a decrease in Cost of Transport (CoT) with increased body mass. To explore the relationship between intraspecific variation in body size and power expended during steady forward flight, we flew these beetles tethered in a wind tunnel and compared the flapping kinematics and power output of individuals varying in body mass (1–7 gr). Concurrently, we measured the forces the insects applied on the tether allowing us to evaluate the tethering effects and correct for them. From the flapping kinematics we estimated the mechanical power expended using a quasi-steady blade-element model. We found that muscle mass-specific power did not differ between small and large individuals flying at the same wind (flight) speed in the tunnel. Consequently, the CoT of B. rufomaculata does not vary with body mass. Such invariance of mass-specific power with body mass may aid the dispersal of smaller individuals from deteriorating host trees to new ones.

A role for sex-determination genes in life history evolution? Doublesex mediates sexual size dimorphism in the gazelle dung beetle.

An organism's fitness depends strongly on its age and size at maturation. Although the evolutionary forces acting on these critical life history traits have been heavily scrutinized, the developmental mechanisms underpinning intraspecific variation in adult size and development time remain much less well-understood. Using RNA interference, I here show that the highly conserved sex-determination gene doublesex (dsx) mediates sexual size dimorphism (SSD) in the gazelle dung beetle Digitonthophagus gazella. Because doublesex undergoes sex-specific splicing and sex-limited isoforms regulate different target genes, this suggests that dsx contributes to the resolution of intralocus sexual conflict in body size. However, these results contrast with previous studies demonstrating that dsx does not affect body size or SSD in Drosophila. This indicates that intraspecific body size variation is underlain by contrasting developmental mechanisms in different insect lineages. Furthermore, although male D.gazella have a longer development time than females, sexual bimaturism was not affected by dsx expression knockdown. In addition, and in contrast to secondary sexual morphology, dsx did not significantly affect nutritional plasticity in life history. Taken together, these findings indicate that dsx signalling contributes to intraspecific life history variation but that dsx's function in mediating sexual dimorphism in life history differs among traits and species. More generally, these findings suggest that genes ancestrally tasked with sex determination have been co-opted into the developmental regulation of life history traits and may represent an underappreciated mechanism of life history evolution.

Body size affects lethal and sublethal responses to organic enrichment: Evidence of associational susceptibility for an infaunal bivalve

Eutrophication is an increasing problem worldwide and can disrupt ecosystem processes in which macrobenthic bioturbators play an essential role. This study explores how intraspecific variation in body size affects the survival, mobility and impact on sediment organic matter breakdown in enriched sediments of an infaunal bivalve. A mesocosm experiment was conducted in which monocultures and all size combinations of three body sizes (small, medium and large) of the Sydney cockle, Anadara trapezia, were exposed to natural or organically enriched sediments. Results demonstrate that larger body sizes have higher tolerance to enriched conditions and can reduce survival of smaller cockles when grown together. Also, large A. trapezia influenced sediment organic matter breakdown although a direct link to bioturbation activity was not clear. Overall, this study found that intraspecific variation in body size influences survival and performance of bioturbators in eutrophic scenarios.

Landscape characteristics predict body sizes in wild bees: implications for pollination services and foraging range

Declines in wild bee abundance and diversity may have cascading effects throughout ecosystems as well as negatively impact food security. Understanding the scale at which wild bees forage within agricultural landscapes is an important component of developing effective pollinator conservation strategies. Foraging ranges of wild bee species can provide insight into the extent to which wild bees pollinate crops. In the southern Great Plains, Brassica napus (canola) is an important edible oil, oilseed meal, and biofuels crop that benefits from bee pollination. We measured body size of three common wild bee species at increasing distances into canola fields (75, 150, and 300 m), as well as landscape characteristics and seed set of canola. We found positive intraspecific correlations between body size and distance into canola fields for two of the species, as well as seed set and distance into canola fields. We also found correlations between land use and body size across three nested spatial scales (250 m, 500 m, and 1 km). As the area of grass and pasture increased so did the body size of Agapostemon texanus (Cresson), whereas the body size of Lasioglossum disparile (Cresson) decreased. As the area of development increased, the body size of Colletes mandibularis (Smith) decreased. Body size variation at the population level may have implications for pollination efficacy and foraging ranges of wild bees and should be considered in future studies, particularly with a more robust sample size. Furthermore, intraspecific variation in body size may provide insights into species level responses to land use change and other environmental stressors.

Ecogeographical patterns of body size differ among North American paper wasp species

Species with widespread distributions frequently show clines in body size across broad geographic areas. These clines may be the result of “ecogeographical rules” that describe spatial patterns of phenotypic differences driven by environmental variation. Intraspecific variation in body size, and the mechanisms causing this variation, have been poorly described in social wasps. This study examined ecogeographical patterns of body size for 12 native species and one non-native species of North American paper wasps (genus: Polistes) using body size measurements from > 14,000 pinned museum specimens. Intraspecific body size was correlated with latitude, elevation, and broadscale climate variation. However, the direction of this relationship was idiosyncratic across species, with Bergmann’s clines and converse Bergmann’s clines equally represented. There was no evidence of a phylogenetic signal in the direction of the cline between body size and the environment. Within species, the worker caste and the reproductive caste showed the same direction of response between body size and latitude, although for most species the reproductive caste was larger than the worker caste. Intraspecific variation in body size appears to be driven by differences in the response among species to similar environmental variables but the mechanisms causing this variation remain unknown.

Body size impacts critical thermal maximum measurements in lizards.

Understanding the mechanisms behind critical thermal maxima (CTmax; the high body temperature at which neuromuscular coordination is lost) of organisms is central to understanding ectotherm thermal tolerance. Body size is an often overlooked variable that may affect interpretation of CTmax, and consequently, how CTmax is used to evaluate mechanistic hypotheses of thermal tolerance. We tested the hypothesis that body size affects CTmax and its interpretation in two experimental contexts. First, in four Sceloporus species, we examined how inter- and intraspecific variation in body size affected CTmax at normoxic and experimentally induced hypoxic conditions, and cloacal heating rate under normoxic conditions. Negative relationships between body size and CTmax were exaggerated in larger species, and hypoxia-related reductions in CTmax were unaffected by body size. Smaller individuals had faster cloacal heating rates and higher CTmax, and variation in cloacal heating rate affected CTmax in the largest species. Second, we examined how body size interacted with the location of body temperature measurements (i.e., cloaca vs. brain) in Sceloporus occidentalis, then compared this in living and deceased lizards. Brain temperatures were consistently lower than cloacal temperatures. Smaller lizards had larger brain-cloacal temperature differences than larger lizards, due to a slower cloacal heating rate in large lizards. Both live and dead lizards had lower brain than cloacal temperatures, suggesting living lizards do not actively maintain lower brain temperatures when they cannot pant. Thermal inertia influences CTmax data in complex ways, and body size should therefore be considered in studies involving CTmax data on species with variable sizes.

Intraspecific diversity in prey body size influences survivorship by conferring resistance to predation

AbstractIntraspecific diversity can have as strong an effect on communities and ecosystems as more well‐studied effects of species diversity. Intraspecific variation in prey body size may have particularly strong effects on populations by influencing the outcome of predator–prey interactions, but this has received little attention. We tested the hypotheses that (1) body size of the Sydney Rock Oyster, Sacosstrea glomerata, influences predation risk; (2) increasing intraspecific variation in body size of the oyster will enhance total survivorship; (3) oyster size phenotypes will differ in the magnitude of survivorship benefits they incur from association with other phenotypes; and (4) size‐specific survivorship benefits of associating with other body sizes will vary with predator access. In a fully factorial field experiment, we manipulated the diversity of S. glomerata oyster body sizes (1–3 size classes per treatment) and predator access to prey (small vs. large mesh cages). Oyster total and individual phenotype survivorship was documented over an 8‐week period. Overall, the relationship between diversity in S. glomerata body size and survivorship was positive and was related to changes in density of individual body sizes when grown in mixtures. In fact, no phenotype had lower percent survivorship in mixtures than in monoculture. Nevertheless, individual phenotypes displayed differing responses to predator access treatments and phenotype mixing that reflected differences in the types of predators (e.g., shell drilling or removing) to which they were most susceptible. In general, the greatest survivorship benefits of phenotype mixing were seen in treatments where the most disparate (i.e., small, large) size classes were mixed. Our study adds to growing evidence of the importance of intraspecific diversity in mediating key population processes such as predation. Importantly, different oyster phenotypes benefit from increasing phenotypic diversity depending on the predators that can access the oysters, suggesting that flexible complementarity among oyster phenotypes may be a useful tool for increasing the resistance and resilience of oysters in a range of environments which vary in their predator composition. These results will help to inform strategies for enhancing survivorship of species transplants in restoration projects.

Intraspecific variation in body size of bumblebee workers influences anti-predator behaviour.

Flower-dwelling predators make flowers dangerous foraging sites for pollinators, potentially affecting their anti-predator behaviour. Moreover, predation vulnerability often varies among pollinators' body sizes with interspecific comparisons showing that smaller species are more vulnerable than larger ones. However, how intraspecific body size variation influences pollinator behaviour under predation risk is still unknown, especially under natural conditions. We hypothesized that bumblebee workers of different sizes will exhibit different foraging strategies under predation risk. We predict that (a) small workers should more often exhibit anti-predator behaviours than larger workers. We also hypothesized that the anti-predator behaviour should be influenced by predator size and reward availability; therefore, we expect (b) higher avoidance behaviour towards larger predator sizes and (c) more and longer visits to inflorescences with high nectar availability. Finally, we expect that (d) nectar availability should overcome the anti-predator behaviour in less vulnerable, large, workers. We recorded flower visitation, time spent and rejection behaviours of different sizes of Bombus terrestris (Apidae) workers (large, medium and small) to inflorescences of Alstroemeria aurea (Alstroemeriaceae) with different treatments of artificial spiders (small and large) and nectar availability (with, without). Anti-predator and foraging behaviour of bumblebees was affected by the size of the worker, the presence of artificial spiders and nectar availability. Large and medium size bumblebees strongly reduced flower visitation and time spent in the presence of artificial spiders, consistently avoiding flowers with spiders, regardless of spider size or nectar availability. Instead, small bumblebees seldom modified their behaviour when facing artificial spiders, only increasing their avoidance or decreasing their foraging time in nectarless flowers hosting large artificial spiders. This pattern of larger workers being more sensitive to predation risk than smaller ones at the intraspecific level in B.terrestris is contrary to the expected and acknowledged trend based on previous interspecific comparisons, but partially consistent with predictions of models of optimal foraging theory. Intraspecific behavioural variability was uncovered only when nectar was available, whereas artificial predator size rarely modified bumblebee anti-predator and foraging behaviour. Therefore, our findings suggest that the trade-off between maximizing resource intake and minimizing predation risk strongly varies across bumblebee worker body sizes.

Intraspecific Variation in Worker Body Size Makes North American Bumble Bees (Bombus spp.) Less Susceptible to Decline.

Population declines have been documented in approximately one-third of bumble bee species. Certain drivers of these declines are known; however, less is known about the interspecific trait differences that make certain species more susceptible to decline. Two traits that have implications for responding to rapidly changed environments may be particularly consequential for bumble bee populations: intraspecific body size variation and brain size. Bumble bee body size is highly variable and is likely adaptive at the colony level, and brain size correlates with cognitive traits (e.g., behavioral plasticity) in many groups. Trait variation and plasticity may buffer species against negative effects of rapidly changed environments. Using phylogenetically controlled analyses of 31 North American bumble bee species, we find that higher intraspecific body size variation is associated with species having increased their relative abundance over time. However, this variation does not significantly interact with tongue length, another trait thought to influence bees' decline susceptibility. Head size, a proxy for brain size, is not correlated with change in relative abundance. Our results support the hypothesis that variation in body size makes species less susceptible to decline in rapidly altered environments and suggests that this variation is important to the success of bumble bee populations.

Field estimates of fitness costs of the pace‐of‐life in an endangered damselfly

Theory predicts that within-population differences in the pace-of-life can lead to cohort splitting and produce marked intraspecific variation in body size. Although many studies showed that body size is positively correlated with fitness, many argue that selection for the larger body is counterbalanced by opposing physiological and ecological selective mechanisms that favour smaller body. When a population split into cohorts with different paces of life (slow or fast cohort), one would expect to detect the fitness-size relationship among and within cohorts, that is, (a) slower-developing cohort has larger body size and higher fitness than faster-developing cohort, and (b) larger individuals within each cohort show higher fitness than smaller individuals. Here, we test these hypotheses in capture-mark-recapture field surveys that assess body size, lifespan, survival and lifetime mating success in two consecutive generations of a partially bivoltine aquatic insect, Coenagrion mercuriale, where the spring cohort is slower-developing than the autumn cohort. As expected, body size was larger in the slow-developing cohort, which is consistent with the temperature-size rule and also with the duration of development. Body size seasonal variation was greater in slow-developing cohort most likely because of the higher variation in age at maturity. Concordant with theory, survival probability, lifespan and lifetime mating success were higher in the slow-developing cohort. Moreover, individual body size was positively correlated with survival and mating success in both cohorts. Our study confirms the fitness costs of fast pace-of-life and the benefits of larger body size to adult fitness.

Exploring the Role of Insulin Signaling in Relative Growth: A Case Study on Wing-Body Scaling in Lepidoptera.

Adult forms emerge from the relative growth of the body and its parts. Each appendage and organ has a unique pattern of growth that influences the size and shape it attains. This produces adult size relationships referred to as static allometries, which have received a great amount of attention in evolutionary and developmental biology. However, many questions remain unanswered, for example: What sorts of developmental processes coordinate growth? And how do these processes change given variation in body size? It has become increasingly clear that nutrition is one of the strongest influences on size relationships. In insects, nutrition acts via insulin/TOR signaling to facilitate inter- and intra-specific variation in body size and appendage size. Yet, the mechanism by which insulin signaling influences the scaling of growth remains unclear. Here we will discuss the potential roles of insulin signaling in wing-body scaling in Lepidoptera. We analyzed the growth of wings in animals reared on different diet qualities that induce a range of body sizes not normally present in our laboratory populations. By growing wings in tissue culture, we survey how perturbation and stimulation of insulin/TOR signaling influences wing growth. To conclude, we will discuss the implications of our findings for the development and evolution of organismal form.
