RESPIRATORY diseases of poultry may present confused symptomatic pictures. The isolation of any one etiological agent often fails to explain all the symptoms observed.Simultaneous exposure of a susceptible host to two viruses may result in a dual infection, virus exaltation or viral interference (Schlesinger, 1952). Dual viral infections have been observed in human medicine when separate organs and tissues have been infected by localizing viruses. In addition the observation of two types of inclusions has demonstrated the presence of two separate viruses within a single cell. Intranuclear herpetic and cytoplasmic vaccinal inclusions were observed within a single cell by Anderson (1942) and Syverton and Berry (1947). West (1952) observed intranuclear inclusions of laryngotracheitis virus and cytoplasmic Bollinger bodies of fowl pox virus in a single cloacal epithelial cell as the result of a simultaneous vaccination.Brandly (1950) suggested the possibility of mixed respiratory viral infections in poultry.
