Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi influence the intraspecific competitive ability of plants under field and glasshouse conditions

Main conclusionNicotiana attenuata’s capacity to interact with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi influences its intraspecific competitive ability under field and glasshouse conditions, but not its overall community productivity.Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi can alter the nutrient status and growth of plants, and they can also affect plant–plant, plant–herbivore, and plant–pathogen interactions. These AM effects are rarely studied in populations under natural conditions due to the limitation of non-mycorrhizal controls. Here we used a genetic approach, establishing field and glasshouse communities of AM-harboring Nicotiana attenuata empty vector (EV) plants and isogenic plants silenced in calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase expression (irCCaMK), and unable to establish AM symbioses. Performance and growth were quantified in communities of the same (monocultures) or different genotypes (mixed cultures) and both field and glasshouse experiments returned similar responses. In mixed cultures, AM-harboring EV plants attained greater stalk lengths, shoot and root biomasses, clearly out-competing the AM fungal-deficient irCCaMK plants, while in monocultures, both genotypes grew similarly. Competitive ability was also reflected in reproductive traits: EV plants in mixed cultures outperformed irCCaMK plants. When grown in monocultures, the two genotypes did not differ in reproductive performance, though total leaf N and P contents were significantly lower independent of the community type. Plant productivity in terms of growth and seed production at the community level did not differ, while leaf nutrient content of phosphorus and nitrogen depended on the community type. We infer that AM symbioses drastically increase N. attenuata’s competitive ability in mixed communities resulting in increased fitness for the individuals harboring AM without a net gain for the community.

Rapidly evolved traits enable new conservation tools: perspectives from the cane toad invasion of Australia.

Natural populations can show rapid adaptive responses to intense (human-mediated) environmental change. The potential for exploiting rapidly evolved traits for conservation management has been often discussed but rarely implemented. Capitalizing on a well-studied biological invasion, we here explore the idea that rapid phenotypic change in the invaders, their pathogens, and the native biota provide opportunities for managers to control invader abundance and buffer adverse impacts on native wildlife. Intensive studies of the invasion of tropical Australia by cane toads (Rhinella marina) have identified newly evolved vulnerabilities that we could exploit for toad control; and newly evolved resilience of native wildlife that we could exploit for impact reduction. For example, distinctive phenotypes of toads at the expanding range edge enhance dispersal rate but reduce reproductive output, intraspecific competitive ability, and immunocompetence; and the evolution of larval cannibalism creates opportunities not only for species-specific trapping of toad tadpoles, but also could be exploited (when allied to emerging CRISPR-Cas9 techniques) to intensify intraspecific conflict in invasive toads. That is, we could use the invasive species to control their own populations. This case study illustrates the potential of detailed basic research to identify novel approaches for conservation.

Bacillus benefits the competitive growth of Ambrosia artemisiifolia by increasing available nutrient levels.

Bacillus can help plants to acquire nutrients either directly or indirectly. However, the role of Bacillus community on the competitive growth of invasive Ambrosia artemisiifolia is poorly understood. Native Setaria viridis is often found in areas that have been invaded by A. artemisiifolia. We sought to determine whether the quantitative and/or qualitative differences in the Bacillus community present on the invasive A. artemisiifolia and native S.viridis provide a competitive advantage to the invasive over native species. A field experiment was established to imitate the invasion of A. artemisiifolia. The 16S rRNA gene was commercially sequenced to identify the bacilli isolated from the rhizosphere soil of field-grown A. artemisiifolia and S. viridis. The Bacillus communities in their rhizosphere were compared, and their effects on the competitive growth of A. artemisiifolia and S. viridis were tested in the pot experiments. Bacillus in the rhizosphere soil of A. artemisiifolia significantly enhanced its intra-specific competitive ability. The relative abundance of B. megaterium in the rhizosphere soil of A. artemisiifolia was significantly higher than that of S. viridis. Inoculation with B. megaterium that was isolated from the rhizosphere soil of both A. artemisiifolia and S. viridis significantly enhanced the relative competitiveness of A. artemisiifolia and inhibited that of S. viridis. The higher abundance of B. megaterium in the rhizosphere of A. artemisiifolia creates higher levels of available nutrients than that in the native S. viridis, which enhance the competitive growth of A. artemisiifolia. The result helps to discover the mechanism of Bacillus community in the invasion of A. artemisiifolia.

Shift in competitive ability mediated by soil biota in an invasive plant.

Understanding the shifts in competitive ability and its driving forces is key to predict the future of plant invasion. Changes in the competition environment and soil biota are two selective forces that impose remarkable influences on competitive ability. By far, evidence of the interactive effects of competition environment and soil biota on competitive ability of invasive species is rare. Here, we investigated their interactive effects using an invasive perennial vine, Mikania micrantha. The competitive performance of seven M. micrantha populations varying in their conspecific and heterospecific abundance were monitored in a greenhouse experiment, by manipulating soil biota (live and sterilized) and competition conditions (competition‐free, intraspecific, and interspecific competition). Our results showed that with increasing conspecific abundance and decreasing heterospecific abundance, (1) M. micrantha increased intraspecific competition tolerance and intra‐ vs. interspecific competitive ability but decreased interspecific competition tolerance; (2) M. micrantha increased tolerance of the negative soil biota effect; and (3) interspecific competition tolerance of M. micrantha was increasingly suppressed by the presence of soil biota, but intraspecific competition tolerance was less affected. These results highlight the importance of the soil biota effect on the evolution of competitive ability during the invasion process. To better control M. micrantha invasion, our results imply that introduction of competition‐tolerant native plants that align with conservation priorities may be effective where M. micrantha populations are long‐established and inferior in inter‐ vs. intraspecific competitive ability, whereas eradication may be effective where populations are newly invaded and fast‐growing.

Individual growth, competitive ability and stand-level biomass production of invasive Sorghum halepense populations on Hainan island, China

Abstract Aims Sorghum halepense is a perennial invasive weed causing great harm worldwide, including some regions on Hainan island. In this study, we compared the performance between plants from outbreaking (dense stands covering large areas) and those from non-outbreaking (less dense stands covering smaller areas) populations. We also tested the hypothesis that plants with greater intraspecific competitive ability will have a lower stand biomass when grown under high-density conditions. Methods We grew plants of S. halepense individually, with an intraspecific competitor, with two interspecific competitors and with three or six plants from the same population per pot, and tested whether outbreaking and non-outbreaking populations differed in their performance. We also tested whether stand biomass (i.e. total biomass when three or six plants were grown together) was related to total biomass of individuals grown alone, and intra- or interspecific competitive ability. Important Findings Outbreaking and non-outbreaking populations of S. halepense differed in their biomass when individuals were grown alone, but not when grown in competition or when three or six plants from the same population were grown together. Across populations, biomass of individuals grown alone was negatively correlated with intra- and interspecific competitive ability, indicating that there is a trade-off between individual growth and competitive ability. Stand-level biomass was not related to total biomass of individuals grown alone, and intra- or interspecific competitive ability, indicating that low biomass when grown alone and high competitive ability may not reduce the performance of S. halepense when grown in dense monocultural stands.

Trait-density relationships explain performance in cladoceran zooplankton.

Traits have been used extensively to predict and understand performance in response to the abiotic environment, but their role for understanding competitive interactions is less understood, especially in nonplant systems. In this study, we evaluate how traits interact with intraspecific density to modulate performance (per capita birth rate) and whether the traits associated with intraspecific competitive ability are similar across multiple species. We used an experimental system of four cladoceran zooplankton species, experimentally manipulated the density of conspecifics, and measured a range of morphological and life history characteristics (body mass, body length, second antenna length, eye diameter, relative growth rate, age at first reproduction, and birth rate). With causal modeling, we identified significant trait-density relationships for three out of four species, although the specific traits that predicted birth rate varied from species to species. In general, individuals at higher densities displayed smaller morphological traits and shifts towards slower relative growth rates and delayed onset of reproduction. We also asked more generally if there are consistent trait-mediated impacts of density across multiple species. The interspecific model identified significant trait-density relationships for body length, age at first reproduction, and relative growth rate. Unexpectedly, we found little evidence for trait-based competition due to mechanisms such as limiting similarity or hierarchical competition, and rather noted the potential for trait plasticity and constraints on plasticity affecting performance in response to the competitive environment.

Removal of Soil Microbes Alters Interspecific Competitiveness of Epichloë Endophyte-Infected over Endophyte-Free Leymus chinensis.

Epichloë endophytes may not only affect the growth and resistances of host grasses, but may also affect soil environment including soil microbes. Can Epichloë endophyte-mediated modification of soil microbes affect the competitive ability of host grasses? In this study, we tested whether Epichloë endophytes and soil microbes alter intraspecific competition between Epichloë endophyte-colonized (EI) and endophyte-free (EF) Leymus chinensis and interspecific competition between L. chinensis and Stipa krylovii. The results demonstrated that Epichloë endophyte colonization significantly enhanced the intraspecific competitive ability of L. chinensis and that this beneficial effect was not affected by soil microbes. Under interspecific competition, however, significant interactions between Epichloë endophytes and soil microbes were observed. The effect of Epichloë endophytes on interspecific competitiveness of the host changed from positive to neutral with soil microbe removal. Here higher mycorrhizal colonization rates probably contributed to interspecific competitive advantages of EI over EF L. chinensis. Our result suggests that Epichloë endophytes can influence the competitive ability of the host through plant soil feedbacks from the currently competing plant species.

Evolution under pH stress and high population densities leads to increased density-dependent fitness in the protist Tetrahymena thermophila.

Abiotic stress is a major force of selection that organisms are constantly facing. While the evolutionary effects of various stressors have been broadly studied, it is only more recently that the relevance of interactions between evolution and underlying ecological conditions, that is, eco-evolutionary feedbacks, have been highlighted. Here, we experimentally investigated how populations adapt to pH-stress under high population densities. Using the protist species Tetrahymena thermophila, we studied how four different genotypes evolved in response to stressfully low pH conditions and high population densities. We found that genotypes underwent evolutionary changes, some shifting up and others shifting down their intrinsic rates of increase (r0 ). Overall, evolution at low pH led to the convergence of r0 and intraspecific competitive ability (α) across the four genotypes. Given the strong correlation between r0 and α, we argue that this convergence was a consequence of selection for increased density-dependent fitness at low pH under the experienced high density conditions. Increased density-dependent fitness was either attained through increase in r0 , or decrease of α, depending on the genetic background. In conclusion, we show that demography can influence the direction of evolution under abioticstress.

Wheat yield response to nitrogen from the perspective of intraspecific competition

Agronomic and breeding innovations are essential to support grain production whilst avoiding over-fertilisation and excess reactive nitrogen in some agroecosystems, and chronic under-fertilisation and mining of soil organic matter in others. Based on the well-established negative correlation between yield per unit land area and intraspecific competitive ability, we hypothesised that the yield-nitrogen curve at the centre of fertiliser decisions mirrors the competition-nitrogen curve. A factorial study combining six wheat cultivars, two locations, two sowing dates and four nitrogen rates supported our hypothesis in early-sown crops where intraspecific competition for nitrogen decreased, and competition for radiation and water increased with increasing availability of nitrogen. In late-sown crops, high temperature favouring fast development, short plants and smaller canopies overrode competition for resources as the driver of grain yield. The implication is that genetic and agronomic reduction of intraspecific competition can improve yield per unit available nitrogen.

Elevated nitrogen deposition may advance invasive weed, Solidago canadensis, in calcareous soils

AbstractAimsChange in nitrogen (N) availability regulates phosphorus (P) acquisition and potentially alters the competition among native species and invasive weeds. This study determines how current and projected N deposition affect the growth, the intraspecific and interspecific competitive ability of native and invasive plants in calcareous soils with low P availability.MethodsA controlled greenhouse experiment was conducted using sparingly soluble hydroxyapatite (HAP) to simulate the calcareous soils with low P availability. The growth and competitive intensity between an invasive weed (Solidago canadensis) and a native weed (Pterocypsela laciniata) exposed to two levels of N addition representative of current and future N deposition in China were experimentally determined.Important FindingsP acquisition and the growth of both S. canadensis and P. laciniata growing alone significantly increased with increasing N level. However, the effect of N addition was reduced when intraspecific or interspecific competition existed. N addition altered the competitive relationship between S. canadensis and P. laciniata allowing S. canadensis to out-compete P. laciniata due to variation in P acquisition from HAP. Elevated N deposition might assist the invasion of S. canadensis in the widely distributed calcareous soils under environmental changes.

Evolution of increased intraspecific competitive ability following introduction: The importance of relatedness among genotypes

Abstract A long‐standing explanation for invasion success is that invasive plants could evolve to be more competitive following introduction. This evolution of increased competitive ability (EICA) hypothesis, however, has seldom been tested with regard to intraspecific competition. Given that plants can display different responses to related and unrelated conspecifics, the evolution of intraspecific competitive ability might be specific to genotypes of different relatedness. Here, we grew five native (South American) and five introduced (North American) genotypes of the clonal herbaceous invasive plant Alternanthera philoxeroides alone, with above‐ground competition from kin (the same genotype) or from one of two types of strangers (another genotype from the same range or another genotype from the other range). When grown alone, introduced and native genotypes produced similar total biomass and storage‐root biomass. However, in response to intraspecific competition, introduced genotypes showed increases in total biomass and stem length, and a decrease in specific stem length, whereas native genotypes showed the opposite pattern. When grown with kin instead of strangers, introduced genotypes showed an increase in branch number, whereas native genotypes showed the opposite. Synthesis. Our study provided evidence for evolution of increased intraspecific competitive ability in an invasive plant. We also found, for the first time, that the interactions among kin were likely to shift from competition towards facilitation following introduction.

Assessment of Caenorhabditis elegans Competitive Fitness in the Presence of a Bacterial Parasite.

Accurate measurements of an organism's fitness are crucial for measuring evolutionary change. Methods of fitness measurement are most accurate when incorporating an individual's survival and fecundity, as well as accounting for any ecological interactions or environmental effects experienced by the organism. Here, we describe a protocol for measuring the relative mean fitness of Caenorhabditis elegans populations, or strains, through an assay that accounts for individual survival, fecundity, and intraspecific competitive ability in the presence of a bacterial parasite. In this competitive fitness assay nematodes from a focal population or strain are mixed with a GFP-marked tester strain in equal proportions, the mixture of nematodes are then exposed to a parasite, and the relative competitive fitness of the focal strain is determined by measuring the change in the ratio of focal nematodes to GFP-marked nematodes after one generation. Specifically, this protocol can be implemented to measure changes in nematode host fitness after experimental evolution by determining the relative competitive fitness of evolved versus ancestral nematode populations.

Intraspecific competition in oat varieties selected for grain yield and milling

Oats likely emerged as part of the weedy grass assemblage in early wheat and barley crops. Some Avena species, such as A. fatua and A. sterilis, evolved into aggressive weeds, and the high interspecific competitive ability of cultivated oats (A. sativa) is valued agronomically to facilitate weed control in rotations. We tested the hypothesis, verified in many crops, that high yield of oats is related to low intraspecific competitive ability. Ten contemporary oat varieties, selected for grain yield and milling attributes, where grown in three environments. Response to competition was calculated as 100 × (Yb – Yc)/Yc, where Y is yield measured in border (b) and centre (c) rows. The same definition was used to calculate response to competition of yield components (biomass, harvest index, grain number, grain weight) and the components of grain number (panicle number and grains per panicle). Yield response to competition was affected by all three sources of variation, i.e. environment, variety and variety × environment interaction. The interaction demonstrates the plasticity of yield response to intraspecific competition; for example, the response to competition of variety Mortlock varied from 9% to 71% among environments. This plasticity in yield response to competition was partially related to variety-dependent responses to competition for biomass and harvest index, number of panicles and number of grains per panicle. We did not find the expected negative association between yield and variety-dependent response to competition. We discuss how this lack of correlation could relate to sampling issues, i.e. a limitation in the range of environments and varieties explored in this study, or reflect a legitimate feature of oat crops arising from early and contemporary selective pressures.

Negative association between chickpea response to competition and crop yield: Phenotypic and genetic analysis

Donald’s ideotype and empirical evidence in cereal and oilseed crops indicate high yield is associated with less competitive plants. In this study we grew 20 chickpea lines in six environments to investigate the association between yield and intra-specific competitive ability and its genetic underpinnings using Fst genome scan based on whole genome resequencing data. We measured yield and its components and calculated response to competition (RC) as the ratio between the trait in outer rows (relaxed competition) and the trait in inner rows (higher competition). Crop yield correlated negatively with RC for yield, biomass, harvest index, seed number, and pod number. Fst genome scan revealed 14 genomic regions under selection for response to competition of yield, seed number or biomass, and 6 genomic regions under selection for yield in inner or outer canopy rows. Candidate genes in these regions include members of the nitrate-transporter 1 family, patatin and hormone-related genes. The top genomic regions found to be under selection for yield in inner rows and outer rows did not coincide. This genetic architecture provides a mechanistic basis for the observation that phenotypes that are adequate for relaxed competition often perform poorly in dense stands.

Intraspecific competitive ability declines towards the edge of the expanding range of the invasive vine Mikania micrantha.

The evolution of competitive ability plays an important role in plant invasions. While many studies of the evolution of invasive species have compared populations from native and invaded ranges in terms of their performance, little attention has been paid to the evolution of intraspecific competitive ability within the invaded range during range expansion. In addition, whether the proportional change in the amount of invasive litter influences the intraspecific competitive ability among invasive populations of different ages has not yet been investigated. Here we selected Mikania micrantha H.B.K., a highly invasive vine in south China with a well-documented invasion history, as the study species. We manipulated competition among populations of different ages from the core of the range to its edges under four litter treatments in a common garden experiment. We found that during its 30-year invasion, intraspecific competitive ability was rapidly selected against towards range edges, which may be driven partly by the decline in population density. However, litter source did not influence the outcome of the competition among populations of different ages; it instead functioned more like a supply of nutrients. We suggest that stage-specific conditions such as population density should be incorporated into the experimental design when examining the evolution of invasive plants, especially when invasive populations are subject to selection on a small geographic scale. This approach can reduce sampling bias and thus improve the ability to infer the mechanisms responsible for the evolution of invasive populations.

Do candidate genes mediating conspecific sperm precedence affect sperm competitive ability within species? A test case in Drosophila.

When females mate to multiple males, the last male to mate fathers the majority of progeny. When males of different species inseminate a female, the sperm of the male conspecific to the female is favored in fertilization in a process known as conspecific sperm precedence (CSP). A large number of studies in Drosophila have assayed the genetic basis of sperm competition, with a main focus on D. melanogaster and accessory gland protein genes. Only a few studies have attempted to disentangle the genetic basis of CSP between related species of Drosophila. Although there is no a priori reason to believe that genes influencing intraspecific sperm competitive ability might also mediate conspecific sperm precedence, no study has addressed the question. Here, we test a group of candidate CSP genes between D. simulans and D. mauritiana for their effect on sperm competition in D. melanogaster. The use of P-element insertion lines identified CG14891 gene disruption as the only one causing a significant decrease in second male paternity success relative to wild-type and ebony tester males. The gene disruption affected both sperm displacement and the sperm fertilizing ability. Out of five genes tested using RNA interference, only gene knockdown of CG6864 (Mst89B) significantly reduced the male’s ability to father progeny when second to mate. Our results suggest that CG14891 and CG6864 might have been co-opted from an intraspecies gene function (i.e., sperm competition) into an interspecies avoidance phenotype (i.e., CSP). Alternatively, the dual role of these genes could be a consequence of their pleiotropic roles.

Ecophysiological responses of two dominant subalpine tree species Betula albo-sinensis and Abies faxoniana to intra- and interspecific competition under elevated temperature

Seedlings of tree species Abies faxoniana and Betula albo-sinensis were grown under different competition regimes (single plant, monoculture or mixture) at ambient temperature (AT) and elevated temperature (ET) to evaluate the impact of inter- and intraspecific competition on photosynthesis capacity, N resorption efficiency, N uptake patterns, water use efficiency (foliar carbon isotope composition, δ13C) and root carbon reserve accumulation. Our results showed that ET did not have significant effects on relative height growth rate (RGRH), relative diameter growth rate (RGRD), chlorophyll fluorescence parameters (Fv/Fm, ΦPSII), light-saturated photosynthetic rate (A1400) and nitrogen uptake in A. faxoniana, but it significantly reduced the values of these parameters in B. albo-sinensis. On the other hand, RGRH of A. faxoniana was not influenced by intraspecific competition irrespective of temperature regimes, while in B. albo-sinensis intraspecific competition was severer under AT than under ET. Decreased photosynthetic capacity and reduced plant size detected in B. albo-sinensis under ET likely contribute to its low intraspecific competitive ability. However, we found positive effects of interspecific competition on A. faxoniana but negative effects on B. albo-sinensis under ET, as A. faxoniana exposed to interspecific competition showed higher RGRH, RGRD, A1400, chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, foliar δ13C, foliar N, and percentages of 15N-ammonium and 15N-nitrate recovery than did A. faxoniana exposed to intraspecific competition or no competition. The results indicate that A. faxoniana is a better competitor than B. albo-sinensis under ET. Further, A. faxoniana altered resource use patterns and had a high plasticity in its ammonium uptake in mixtures compared with monocultures under ET, while B. albo-sinensis did not change its N use pattern. In all, our results showed that high temperature stress tolerance (e.g., higher root carbon accumulation), high ability to keep carbon balance (e.g., higher water use efficiency, lower leaf respiration rate, higher Fv/Fm), as well as a better N acquisition ability make A. faxoniana a better competitor when compared to B. albo-sinensisg under ET.

Evolution of Competitive Ability within Lonicera japonica’s Invaded Range

Factors influencing invasive taxa may change during the course of an invasion. For example, intraspecific competition is predicted to be more important in areas with older stands of dense monospecific invaders than at the margins of an invaded range. We evaluated evolution in response to predicted changes in competition by comparing the intraspecific competitive ability of North American populations of Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica) from areas established 100–150 yr ago, which make up the core of the invaded range, to populations from the northern range margin, established in the past 50 yr. Plants from populations in the core and margin regions of the invaded range were grown in two common garden studies. The first had three levels of intraspecific competition, and vines differed in their access to a lattice for climbing. The second asked whether plants from older core or newer margin populations were better competitors. Intraspecific competition decreased the size of plants from both core and margin regions. Contrary to predictions, there was no increase in climbing shoot frequency or size in plants from denser core populations, although these did increase in the presence of a lattice structure. Also contrary to predictions, plants from the margin of the invaded range were larger and stronger competitors than those from the core, regardless of competition level. Enhanced intraspecific competitive ability of plants from low-density margin populations is likely driven by selection for more rapid growth rate in the north, rather than direct selection on competitive ability. Results counter to prediction highlight the importance of considering the broader selective context to understand evolution. Furthermore, this differentiation across the invaded range is likely to enhance L. japonica’s invasive potential.

Seed vigor and plant competitiveness resulting from seeds of Eupatorium adenophorum in a persistent soil seed bank

Seeds in a persistent soil seed bank (PSSB) provide an effective way to maintain plant population and community stability. Seeds that persist in soil incur physiological costs of maintaining viability and vigor, thus, the growth capability of resulting plants may be reduced. However, a lot of functional roles of the PSSB have been deduced from seed germination capability, and little consideration has been given to interspecific and intraspecific competitive ability of the resulting plants. Eupatorium adenophorum was used as the study species to compare germination of different artificially aged PSSB seeds and competition at different densities between resulting plants of aged and freshly produced seeds. Seed burial caused decreases in survival rates but not germination speed. During the 175-day growth period, the individual biomass, average height, basal stem diameter and leaf number of plants from aged PSSB seeds were little lower than that of plants germinated from freshly produced seeds. However, the differences were not significant at any densities. Thus, (1) although seeds stored in soil exhibited a very high death rate, they maintained a high vigor for germination, and (2) resulting plants from PSSB seeds exhibited good competiveness to plants from new seeds of the same population. The results further confirm the significance of PSSB in maintaining stability of plant populations and communities.

Species-specific responses of dew fly larvae to mycotoxins

The larval stages of saprophagous insects and filamentous fungi have been demonstrated to be serious competitors on decaying organic matter. When filamentous fungi appear to be competitively superior, fungal mycotoxins have frequently been suggested to constitute chemical weapons, causing high mortality among insect larvae. In this study, we tested whether typical fungal secondary compounds can indeed be considered as the underlying mechanism of interference competition between filamentous fungi and various saprophagous Drosophila species. In contrast to our expectation, we found no grand mycotoxin-specific effects, but insect survival appeared to be generally determined by complex interaction between toxin identity, toxin concentration and insect species. Three out of five drosophilids seemed to be equally affected by the mycotoxins used in this study, whereas two species showed toxin-specific changes in survival. Only two (Kojic acid and Ochratoxin A) out of seven mycotoxins caused insect-specific responses. Moreover, we discovered correlations between survival in toxin-free and spoiled substrates, which may indicate an interrelationship between intra-specific competitive ability and resistance to mycotoxins. We discuss the significance of mycotoxins as underlying mechanisms driving competitive insect-fungus interactions.
