PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF NITROGEN REMOVAL IN WWTPS USING PARSIMONIOUS MODELS

In the paper, control possibilities for the nitrogen removal process within activated sludge wastewater treatment plants are discussed. A predictive controller is introduced which aims to reduce the peaks in effluent concentration for ammonia nitrogen. Additionally, the controller improves the overall nitrogen removal using less aeration energy. A parsimonious deterministic model is used for the prediction of the effluent ammonia concentration. The main parameter of the model is used for the model adaptation. The performance of the developed controller is evaluated using a benchmark simulation model of a treatment plant introduced by an international work group.

Death, Dying, and Bereavement in Relation to Older Individuals

This article focuses on issues of death, dying, and bereavement in relation to older individuals. Its format follows the International Work Group on Death, Dying and Bereavement (IWG) tradition of identifying a number of assumptions and principles. This article has been produced by a subgroup of the IWG. The members include academics, practitioners, and a broad range of professionals from Australia, Canada, England, Norway, Scotland, South Africa, the Netherlands, the United States, and Wales.

An example of an integrated approach for health and environmental risk assessment: the case of organotin compounds

Because environmental decision making based solely on simple compilation of toxicological data on either wildlife or humans in isolation can not give effective answers about the nature and levels of risk, an integrated approach for risk assessment of adverse effects of chemicals is required. Integration of available information on health and environmental effects, from in vitro to the level of humans, across various species, across different endpoints, and in combination with integrated exposure data, permits enhanced estimation of the potential risks posed by various agents. Mechanistic and quantitative consideration are the keys in this process. A framework for integrated risk assessment has been proposed by an international workgroup. The value and utility of the integrated approach is shown using the example of organotin compounds.

HIV and AIDS: A Clinical Sociological Application of Assumptions and Principles Developed by the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement

HIV is a worldwide epidemic. According to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), 30.6 million people were living with HIV at the end of 1997 (1998). This epidemic not only has implications on the individual but also society. The International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement (IWG) is an organization that studies issues concerning death, dying, and bereavement and produces materials of social value. They have taken a position on the issue of HIV with regard to treatment and prevention by developing assumptions and principles for the patient, family, caregiver, and programs. This article provides a closer look at some of the assumptions and principles developed by the IWG.

Optimized heavy ion beam probing for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor

The international workgroup developed the conceptual design of a heavy ion beam probe (HIBP) diagnostics for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), which is intended for measurements of the plasma potential profile in a gradient area. Now we optimized it by the accurate analysis of the probing trajectories and variation of positions of the injection and detection points. Optimization allows us to reduce the energy of Tl+ beam from 5.6 to 3.4 MeV for standard ITER regime. The detector line starting at the plasma edge towards the center can get an outer part of the horizontal radial potential profile by variation of the energy. The observed radial interval is slightly increased up to 0.76<ρ<1 with respect to initial version 0.8<ρ<1, that allows to cover the region of the density gradient more reliably. Almost double reduction of the beam energy is a critical point. Thus we can significantly decrease the sizes of the accelerator and energy analyzer, the cost of the equipment, and impact of the diagnostics to the machine. Therefore the optimized HIBP design can be realized in ITER.

Experiences of mothers in five countries whose child died of cancer.

Although increasing attention is being focused on the emotional aspects of caring for dying children and their families, few research reports concentrate on the experiences of mothers, particularly in different countries. This article describes the findings of an exploratory, descriptive study that investigated the experiences of mothers from five different countries who each had a child die from cancer in the past 6 months. Principal investigators, members of the International Work Group on Death, Dying, and Bereavement, conducted semistructured interviews with 21 mothers in their own countries. No culturally related differences were noted among mothers, and the mothers' recall of their experiences are more similar than different. All mothers, irrespective of country, described similar reactions to the diagnosis, management of the end-stage illness, and challenge of coping with bereavement. Lessons learned from this project provide suggestions for future research across countries.

Practice guidelines for the clinical assessment and care management of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias among adults with intellectual disability*

AbstractThe AAMR/IASSID practice guidelines, developed by an international workgroup, provide guidance for stage–related care management of Alzheimer's disease, and suggestions for the training and education of carers, peers, clinicians and programme staff. The guidelines suggest a three‐step intervention activity process, that includes: (1) recognizing changes; (2) conducting assessments and evaluations; and (3) instituting medical and care management. They also provide guidance for public policies that reflect a commitment for aggressive care of people With Alzheimers's disease and intellectual disability, and avoidance of institutionalization solely because of a diagnosis of dementia.

Comparison of Seven Sets of Criteria Used for the Diagnosis of Vascular Dementia

At least seven different sets of criteria are commonly used for the diagnosis of vascular dementia (VaD). These are the ischemic scales (IS) of Hachinski, Rosen and Loeb, the criteria from the DSM-III-R, those outlined by Erkinjuntti et al., the State of California Alzheimer's Disease Diagnostic and Treatment Centers (ADDTC) and the international workgroup of the American National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the European "Association Internationale pour la Recherche et l'Enseignement en Neurosciences'. To investigate the differences and similarities of these criteria, we applied them to a sample of 124 demented patients from the Maastricht Memory Clinic. Only 8 patients were diagnosed as having VaD by all criteria. Depending on which criteria were used, the frequencies of VaD and Alzheimer's disease (AD) ranged from 6 to 32%, and from 48 to 56%, respectively. The IS of Hachinski and Rosen resulted in the highest frequencies of VaD, whereas the criteria of Erkinjuntti and those from the ADDTC and the NINDS workgroup yielded the lowest. The number of patients with VaD was reduced substantially when neuroradiological data and the temporal relationship between stroke and dementia were taken into consideration. We conclude that the seven sets of criteria cannot be regarded as interchangeable. Differences in the criteria for VaD and AD may be an overlooked source of interstudy variance

Performance management activities within UNIX International

The primary output of the UNIX International Work Group on Performance Measurement is a set of requirements and recommendations to UNIX International and UNIX System Laboratories for the development of standard performance measurement interfaces to the UNIX System. Requirements will be based on the collective, non-vendor specific needs for a standard performance architecture. Currently the lack of this standard causes undue porting and kernel additions by each UNIX System vendor as well as a great variety of approaches to gain the same basic performance insight into the system. Building tools to monitor, display, model, or predict performance or its trends is a frustrating and currently single vendor enterprise. By providing standard data structures, types of performance data gathered, and a common kernel interface to collect this data, the whole UNIX system vendor community along with the UNIX software vendors can develop performance tools which last more than one UNIX release and work on multiple UNIX platforms.
