The article is an analytical review of the work of the 5th International scientific and practical conference The Civil War in the East: a look at the documentary heritage , which took place on October 18-19, 2023 in Omsk. This is one of the main ongoing Russian historical and archival thematic forums. The authors of this publication participated in the event itself. The review presents the main milestones of the conference, its most significant characteristics (the roster and geography of the participants, the characteristic features of the most important issues considered, which set the general tone of the scientific discussion). Speakers and listeners of the conference unanimously emphasized the high relevance of such events, aimed at preserving and forming national historical and cultural memory, popularizing knowledge about Russia's past. Nowadays, this activity has acquired even greater significance, being associated with patriotic work and the education of the younger generation. The two days of fruitful dialogue have clearly demonstrated the demand among scientists and the public for knowledge about the “Siberian aspect” of the Russian Civil War, as well as the fact that the topic, which remains acute, requires the involvement of leading academic experts. Thanks to a theoretical framework that combines the principles of consistency and determinism, the conference and its results are hereby presented as an important phenomenon of scientific, cultural and social life, with an international discourse. The peculiarity of the genre of the material has predetermined the use of a problematic vision in its presentation. The review is aimed at a wide range of readers, including, first of all, researchers in the fields of history of historical science, events of the Civil War in eastern Russia, cultural anthropology, local history, and commemoration practices.
