Patenting trends by Mexican pharmaceutical companies.

Aim: the activity of patent claims by Mexican pharmaceutical companies is unknown. Objective: analyse the trend in patents of Mexican pharmaceutical companies. Method: a search for patents was carried out in the patent database of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property, using the list of Mexican pharmaceutical companies belonging to the Mexican Association of Pharmaceutical Research Industries, and the codes A61K, A61P and C07 of the International Patent Classification. Results: the leading companies in patent applications were Liomont, Senosiain and RIMSA; however, Mexican pharmaceutical companies claim very few patents, only 266 patent applications in the period 2000-2020, with a technological factor with a value of zero, and a commercial factor of little value. Conclusion: Mexican pharmaceutical companies lack a robust patent system, without growth, and with a low percentage of patents with high commercial value.

Comparative analysis of intelligent connected vehicle industry in China, United States and European Union from technology lifecycle perspective

PurposeThe intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) is an important trend in automobile development, but little research has been conducted on the technological differences in the ICV industry across countries. In this regard, the authors select China, the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) as countries with developed ICV industries to reveal these differences based on the perspective of subdivision technology.Design/methodology/approach The authors use logistic regression to fit lifecycles at technology level and country level based on ICV-related patents from China, the US and the EU, then use the Revealed Technological Advantage (RTA) index, Fast-Growing Specialization Index (FGSI) and International Patent Classification (IPC) numbers to conduct comparison of national technology advantages, finally use the social network analysis to investigate the evolution of characteristics and intermediate nodes of each technology innovation network.FindingsTechnology lifecycles vary according to the subdivision technology and country. The global development of the ICV industry has reached the mature stage, and 2030 may be a watershed moment, ushering in a wave of new technology iterations. In various subdivision technologies, China and the US have more leading RTAs, and China and the EU have more leading FGSIs. Innovation networks in different countries expand with technology lifecycles, with that in China being the fastest. China's Universities, the US's enterprises and the EU's research institutes are active in cooperative innovation as intermediaries.Originality/valueThis is the first study to compare the development of the ICV industry in major countries from the perspective of subdivision technology and reveal characteristics of innovation networks in each.

Выявление перспективных способов преобразования параметров электрической энергии

This paper performs an analysis of the electric power conversion methods, and also examines the development trends of DC-to-DC, AC-to-AC, AC-to-DC and DC-to-AC power converters with the use of the International Patent Classification (2023). A comparison has been made of such different kinds of converters as power converters with intermediate conversion and without intermediate conversion into AC or DC, converters using devices of a transistor and thyristor type, and specific circuit implements corresponding to the IPC classification. Perspective directions of such converters’ development have been revealed. The analysis was carried out on the basis of the US patents databases which were formed by the authors for the IPC groups H02M3, H02M5, H02M7 within 2012 to 2023. The perspective directions were revealed by constructing time series of the US patents for the analyzed power converters and their further comparison by the issued patents number and growth patterns. As a result of research, the advantage of transistor converters circuits has been proved, the perspective development directions of the electric power parameters conversion methods as well as their implementation have been described. There was found a decrease of the issued US invention patents in the considered IPC groups by 40% within 2019 to 2022.

PATENT SEARCH METHODOLOGY IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING COMPETITIVE INVENTIONS

The article examines the patent search technique in the process of creating competitive inventions. Regulatory documents regulating patent law, the main definitions of patent science, which are designed to familiarize beginners and student youth engaged in scientific work related to innovative inventive activity, are given.The article also highlights the issue of the inventor’s inventive activity, examines the stages of search activity in the process of creating competitive inventions. The principles of classification of inventions in accordance with the International Patent Classification of Inventions by means of the information and library system Web IRBIS are considered.Thus, inventions are classified according to thematic headings by class, which makes it possible to organize descriptions of inventions and distribute them according to technical solutions.The article also provides a method of searching for patent information of different countries by means of information and search systems and the Ukrainian information and search system SIS (special information system) UKRNOIVI (Ukrainian national office of intellectual property of innovations), which allows inventors to monitor the status of paperwork for their applications for inventions. Patent search and patent research based on modern information and search systems for patents by means of the Internet allows to prevent borrowing and plagiarism in compliance with the law “On the Protection of Rights to Inventions and Utility Models”.The described method of patent search during the creation of inventions gives the inventor a significant saving of working time spent on patent search, allows the use of modern means of information and communication technologies in the process of creating competitive inventions.

The U-shaped relationship between patent age and patent value: evidence from assigned patents in China

ABSTRACT We propose that opposite changes in the hazards of patent commercialization (HPC) and technology substitution (HTS) lead to a U-shaped relationship between patent age and patent value. Using a dataset of 2446 patents assigned to firms in Chinese universities from 2015-2020, our empirical results support this U-shaped relationship. Young patents with more claims are regarded as more valuable, owing to a lower HPC, and old patents with more International Patent Classification (IPC) classes are regarded as more valuable, owing to a lower HTS. Moreover, backward references had a moderate effect on the U-shaped relationship, and an increase in backward references caused the turning point to move to the right, flattening the U-shaped relationship. Interestingly, the turning point of the U-shaped relationship is around the age of 5.2 years, and the hazard of university patent invalidation in China is highest at this age.

Rethinking the patent domains: An application to wind energy

Wind energy patents are conventionally defined using Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC) and International Patent Classification (IPC) codes that represent wind motors (F03D) and wind energy (Y02E 10/70). This study examines whether these codes sufficiently represent the wind energy patent domain. Using a combination of keywords and classification codes identified through expert input and manual review, we construct an expanded domain with a 7.5% increase in patent count, a 6% increase in recall, and only a 1% decrease in precision for wind energy patents. We also found that the conventional domain is not unbiased; it underrepresents patenting from China and patents published since 2010. This is important because an improved patent domain allows for a holistic patent data set, which is necessary to complete a thorough analysis of the wind industry. Through this wind energy application, we extend our methodology to form a generalized patent search process that can be used to target technology domains within a patent data set.

Алгоритм обработки информации для прогнозирования развития технологий на примере теле- и радиовещания

Today, many Russian companies working in the field of software development for television and radio broadcasting can extract the necessary data on trends in their field of activity by analyzing information received from foreign competitors, for example, studying specialized popular science literature posted on the official websites of foreign competitors, when analyzing information obtained from exhibitions and presentations. However, the opportunity to comprehensively analyze the novelties of foreign developers patented in the world patent databases will give Russian companies competitive advantages in the formation of strategic development plans. It is proposed to develop a patent landscape based on the data of the global patent array (in English) in the field of television and radio broadcasting, analyze patent trends and predict the development of technologies in this area. The novelty of the developed method for predicting the development of technologies lies in the cooperation of USPTO (USA) patent clustering methods based on the international patent classification and forecasting technological trends using the generated time series. The developed method is implemented in Python; in parallelizing the process of parsing patents, the Multiprocessing library was used, Statsmodels was used to analyze data and carry out the forecasting process, and Matplotlib was used to visualize data. The MySQL database management system was chosen to organize information storage. There were processed 28,591 patents, the process of forecasting the development of television and radio technologies was tested based on the constructed time series in the interval of 2015–2020.

Characterizing patent big data upon IPC: a survey of triadic patent families and PCT applications

Research objectiveTriadic patent (TP) families and Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications are often used as datasets to measure innovation capability or R&D internationalization, but their concordance is unclear, which is the main issue in this study.MethodsWe collect the global TP and PCT data from the Derwent Innovations Index (DII), and a total of 1,589,172 TP families and 4,067,389 PCT applications are retrieved. Based on International Patent Classification (IPC) codes, we compare these two big datasets in three parts: IPC distribution, IPC co-occurrence network, and nation-IPC co-occurrence network. In order to understand the overall similarities and differences between TP and PCT, we make the basic statistics of the global data and w-core defined based on the w-index. Furthermore, the w-cores are visualized and the global similarities are calculated for the detailed concordance and differences.FindingsThe result shows that the w-core is suitable to select the core part of big data and TP and PCT get high concordance. Meanwhile, in technological convergence, some specific technical fields (e.g. chemistry, medicine, electronic communication, and lighting technology) and countries/regions (e.g. Germany, Japan, China, and Korea), there are a few differences.Practical implicationsTP families are very similar to PCT applications in terms of reflecting innovation capability or R&D internationalization at a macro level, but when it comes to technological convergence, specific research topics, and countries/regions, the choice may depend on the purpose of the research.

Overview of patents of Federal Universities through patent quality metrics and impact on innovation from the database of the European Patent Office - PATSTAT EPO 2010-2020

This study aims to provide a scenario and indicate the quality of patent registration in Brazilian federal universities from the database of the European Patent Office - EPO and PATSTAT between the years 2010 and 2020, considering the deposits, grants and other relevant data for research. The data were obtained in SQL language and were treated through data integration, supported by MS Power BI software, bringing contributions to the research profile in this international bank, such as the number of patents, research area profile, number of inventors, offices that received patent deposits, patent citations by family, geographic location, profile through patent classes, to understand the innovative process and pure invention, besides helping to improve processes, promote better partnerships, investments in more vital areas and to know the know-how of Universities in specific research areas. Finally, we note the 461-fold increase in the number of filings on this international base since 2015, indicating the maturity of Brazilian university patenting, and the concentration of universities in the Northeast, Southeast, and South. Based on the International Patent Classification (IPC), the most prominent areas are health, medical or veterinary clinics and hygiene (A61), representing 41.48% of the total number of patents, the area of microorganisms or enzymes, their compositions; propagation, conservation or maintenance of microorganisms, genetic or mutational engineering, culture media (C12), representing 12.29% of the total number of patents, the area of Food and food products (A23), microorganisms or enzymes; their compositions; propagation, preservation or maintenance of microorganisms represents 11.69% of patents, and area of organic chemistry (C07) represents 9.12% of patents and the area of investigation or analysis of materials by determining their chemical or physical properties (G01) which represents 6.18% of the total number of patents. The most prominent universities are UFPA, UFMG, UFPE, UFRGS, UFCE, UFPR, UFPEL, UFRN, UTFPR.

Cyclone Separator for Air Particulate Matter Personal Monitoring: A Patent Review

Currently, air pollution is a critical public health problem, which means that the daily measurement of urban air quality can be enriched if measured in a personalized way. Personal environmental monitoring devices can guide the population to take action. They can track their daily activities, avoiding situations that could affect their health, allowing them to precisely know the air quality they breathe in real-time in various microenvironments. In this work, we present a review of cyclonic separation technology patents, such as pre-separators in monitoring devices. We focused on the state-of-the-art commercially available personal monitoring devices, the classification of kinds of patents, and a review of cyclone patents and gas–particle separation behaviors. The World Intellectual Property Organization IP’s portal and Google Patents search engine were used, using international patent classification plus mesh terms involving a cyclone in an air particulate monitor after predefining inclusion and exclusion criteria such as gas–air cyclones, high efficiency, and fine particle separation. Twenty-nine patents were analyzed according to the main characteristics (e.g., cut point, flow rate, and cyclone improvement) available in the patent document. The wide range of cyclones indicates a maximum flow rate of between 0.5 and 4.5 Lpm and a lower cyclone cut point of 0.8 μm. This review includes a discussion of the most relevant features of the patent documents (flow rate, particle cut point, some cyclone improvements, and technology detection). This paper aims to give an overview of the use of cyclones as pre-separators for personal air monitoring devices and to acknowledge the patented improvements of new inventors or developers.

Recent patent applications for coffee and coffee by-products as active ingredients in cosmetics.

Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, and its production and consumption generate large amounts of by-products annually. Coffee by-products and coffee beans are rich in bioactive compounds of great commercial value, including potential applications as active ingredients in skin care products and cosmetic formulations. In addition, there has been growing interest in the use of natural ingredients for cosmetic purposes. Considering the importance of coffee in the world economy, its chemical constituents with potential for cosmetic and dermatological application, and the importance of patents for innovation and technological development, the present study aimed to review recent patents involving coffee and coffee by-product use in cosmetics. This review was carried out using Espacenet. The following inclusion criteria were established: patents that included the terms "coffee" and "skin" in the title, abstract and claims and belonged to the classification A61Q, which is related to the "specific use of cosmetics or similar toilet preparations" considering the International Patent Classification (IPC) or Cooperative Patent Classification (CPC). Considering the 52 patents analysed, the bean was the main way to obtain extracts (39), followed by green beans (7), silverskin (3), peel and pulp (1), pulp (1) and beans and leaves (1). The formulations are mainly intended for use in nonspecific areas of skin (29), eye areas (12), scalp hair (9) and lip skin (2) with claims of anti-ageing, moisturizers, sun protection, hair growth, anti-dandruff, etc. CONCLUSION: Coffee and its residues have high amounts of phenolic compounds, caffeine, fatty acids and other substances known to have important biological properties for the skin. Coffee and its by-products are promising ingredients to be incorporated into topical formulations, ensuring skin health benefits and reducing the environmental impact.

IPC prediction of patent documents using neural network with attention for hierarchical structure.

International patent classifications (IPCs) are assigned to patent documents; however, since the procedure for assigning classifications is manually done by the patent examiner, it takes a lot of time and effort to select some IPCs from about 70,000 IPCs. Hence, some research has been conducted on patent classification with machine learning. However, patent documents are very voluminous, and learning with all the claims (the part describing the content of the patent) as input would run out of the necessary memory, even if the batch size is set to a very small size. Therefore, most of the existing methods learn by excluding some information, such as using only the first claim as input. In this study, we propose a model that considers the contents of all claims by extracting important information for input. In addition, we focus on the hierarchical structure of the IPC, and propose a new decoder architecture to consider it. Finally, we conducted an experiment using actual patent data to verify the accuracy of the prediction. The results showed a significant improvement in accuracy compared to existing methods, and the actual applicability of the method was also discussed.

Trends in the Development of Sham Acupuncture-Related Technologies Focused on Patents Applied for in South Korea

Background: This study aimed to analyze the trends in Korean patents for sham acupuncture.Methods: The electronic database of the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service was searched for Korean patents for sham acupuncture from inception till September 2020. Patents, which were not related to sham acupuncture, were excluded. The applicant, application date, International Patent Classification, and technological content of sham acupuncture were analyzed.Results: This study included eight patents. Application analysis identified the following sham acupuncture types: four (50%), two (25%), and two (25%) patents were for non-penetrating sham acupuncture, electronic sham acupuncture, and patch sham acupuncture, respectively. All patents aimed to use sham acupuncture as a control for rigorous double-blind clinical trials to verify the efficacy of real acupuncture treatment.Conclusion: The present findings suggest that technological advances were focused on developing various types of sham acupuncture methods for double-blind studies. Further large-scale studies using rigorous designs are needed to investigate new sham acupuncture applications.

Technology Trend Analysis of Japanese Green Vehicle Powertrains Technology Using Patent Citation Data

As automobiles are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, the technological shift towards vehicle powertrain systems is an attempt to lower problems such as emissions of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Patent data are the most reliable measure of business performance for applied research and development activities when investigating knowledge domains or technology evolution. This is the first study on Japanese patent citation data of the green vehicle powertrains technology industry, using the social network analysis method, which emphasizes centrality estimates and community detection. This study not only elucidates the knowledge by visualizing flow patterns but also provides a precious and congregative method for verifying important patents under the International Patent Classification system and grasping the trend of the new technology industry. This study detects leading companies, not only in terms of the number of patents but also the importance of the patents. The empirical result shows that the International Patent Classification (IPC) class that starts with “B60K”, which includes hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) and battery electric vehicle (BEV), is more likely to be the technology trend in the green vehicle powertrains industry.

An Integrated Method to Acquire Technological Evolution Potential to Stimulate Innovative Product Design

Fast and effective forecasting of the new generation of products is key to enhancing the competitiveness of a company in the market. Although the technological evolution laws in the theory of the solution of inventive problems (TRIZ) have been used to predict the potential states of products for innovation, there is a lack of effective methods to select the best technological evolution law consistently with product replacement and update, and acquiring potentially new technologies and solutions, which relies heavily on designers’ experience and makes it impossible for designers to efficiently use the technological evolution laws to stimulate product innovation. Aimed to bridge this gap, this paper proposes an integrated method consisting of three main steps, combining the technological evolution laws with back propagation neural network (BPNN), international patent classification (IPC) knowledge and company’s technological distance. The best technical evolution law is first searched by a BPNN. The functional verbs and effects in the IPC are then extracted and searched for potential technologies in the Spyder-integrated development environment. Finally, the company’s technological distance is used to select analogous sources of potential solutions in the patent database. The final innovative design is determined based on the ideality. The proposed method is applied in the development of a steel pipe-cutting machine to verify its feasibility. The proposed method reduces the dependence on designers’ experience and provides a way to access cross-domain technologies, providing a systematic approach for the technological evolution laws to motivate innovative product design.

Comparison of administrative and regulatory green technologies development between China and the U.S. based on patent analysis

With the increasing importance of computer intelligence in the new round of the industrial revolution, administrative, regulatory, or design (ARD) green technology contributes to improving national technological competitiveness and promoting the transformation of green technology, which is becoming an important field under sustainable development goals. The U.S. and China ranked top two in terms of paper influence and patent applications in the field of ARD green technology. However, few comparative studies have been conducted in these two countries. This study presents the evolution and landscapes of ARD green technology between China and the U.S., focusing on comparing development priorities and technical layouts in each five-year plan period. According to the “International Patent Classification (IPC) Green Inventory” launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), we retrieved 69,412 patents published between 2001 and 2020 from the PatSnap database. Descriptive, content, and thematic network analyses were conducted using latent dirichlet allocation (LDA) and community detection algorithms. The results show that both China and the U.S. strategically focus on ARD green technology development. The technical topics in this field can be divided into three themes: data processing systems, traffic control systems, and building designs. The emphasis on technology research and development (R&D) differs between China and the U.S. There is also evidence that the U.S. has advantages in terms of technological innovation and capabilities. However, China has an advantage in terms of data volume, and the gap between China and the U.S. is gradually narrowing. We also highlight the contributions and limitations of this study.

Pharmacological Inventions for Alzheimer Treatment in the United States of America: A Revision Patent from 2010 – 2020

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia. There is currently no cure, and the available pharmacological treatment focuses on treating the symptoms. This study aimed to analyze the pharmacological treatments for AD protected in the US Patent Office. The Matheo Patent software was used to search for patents granted in the 2010-2020 period in the USPTO database. The search strategy «Alzheimer» was used in title and abstract and the International Patent Classification (IPC) codes A61P* and A61K*. The selected patents were divided into six categories according to therapeutic target. Complementary information from scientific databases was used to determine the stage of investigation and efficacy of the patented molecules. In the analyzed period, 58 patents were granted: 10 directed to Aβ peptide metabolism and deposition, three to tau, seven to inflammation, nine to cholinergic, two to glutamatergic and 27 to other targets. More than 80.0% belong to holders from the USA, France, and Japan. The molecules Elenbecestat and LY3202626 decreased the burden of Aβ plaques without significant cognitive improvement, Donanemab is in Phase 3 clinical trial, and the FDA has designated it Breakthrough Therapy. CPC-201 and PXT864 demonstrated, in Phase 2, good tolerability and improvement of AD symptoms. Most of the inventions are focused on treating the earliest phase of AD. The most advanced treatments in their research are those focused on treating Aβ accumulation. More studies are needed to prove the efficacy of the patented molecules.

ТЕХНОЛОГИИ ЗАЩИТЫ ИНФОРМАЦИИ ВО ВСЕМИРНОЙ СЕТИ: ПАТЕНТНАЯ АНАЛИТИКА

The article analyzes the patenting of information security technologies on the Internet. Today, the Internet has become as real a space as our lives. Through it, we learn news, weather, shop in stores, meet and communicate with loved ones in instant messengers and social networks, attend cultural and educational events, get distance education and even paid remote work. In 2019–2021 the worldwide pandemic has given a big impetus to the development of Internet technologies and Internet security. The world has become even more convinced of the value of Internet services and after the pandemic, many business processes of enterprises began to be based on remote technologies. Together with the development of Internet services, secure technologies that eliminate their destabilization began to actively develop. The article considers the general patenting situation at the end of 2021. The leaders and outsiders of patenting were identified, promising areas are analyzed, which in the near future will become an integral part of security on the Internet. The work examined a base including 938,508 patent applications and patents themselves, located in an open patent base lens.org. The total number of patent applications and current patents was revealed, the dynamics of patenting was presented, leading countries were found, companies and inventors engaged in promising developments in the field of information protection on the Internet were identified. The most promising directions were found in accordance with the international patent classification.

Circular Economy and Patents for Treatment of Waste

The circular economy is established as a modern concept, reflecting environmental expectations for the future development of society. But after years of thoughtless extraction of natural resources and irresponsible disposal of excess or already used and unnecessary products and materials, changing the consciousness of enterprise managers to implement transformation and move from a linear model to a circular economy is not an easy task. This paper presents the parameters of the concept of circular economy and justifies its application in modern times. The aim is to outline the role of Environmentally Sound Technologies (ESTs) as a supporting toolkit for applying the principles of the circular economy. Using empirical methods (research, comparison, analysis) the structure and dynamics of the patents granted in the field of waste treatment as an element in the waste management process is presented. The result of the study shows the trends of patent activity, which for the studied period 2002-2022 marks a negative downward trend (an average annual by almost 7%) in several patented waste treatment technologies for which a European patent has been granted. The International Patent Classification (IPC) indices with the highest concentration of patent rights are also revealed, with Technologies for the reclamation of contaminated soil in the first place, accounting for 33.4% of the total patented waste treatment technologies. The prepared analysis of patent information on the rights to patented waste treatment technologies is indicative of the reorientation of patentees and the higher commitment to the creation and implementation of little waste or nonwaste technologies.

The Historical background and development to industrial intellectual property patent and design act refers to the pioneer International Convention ; 1883 which held in Paris it assumed as bed rock and foundation to whole industrial rights as amended and revised in 1979, Patent Cooperation Treaty, 1970 and Model Law for developing Countries on Marks, Trade Names and Act of unfair Competition, WIPO, 1958, then Strasbourg Agreement Concerning International Patent Classification, 1971.
