Intermolecular Interactions between Aldehydes and Alcohols: Conformational Equilibrium and Rotational Spectra of Acrolein-Methanol Complex

The rotational spectra of the 1:1 complex formed by acrolein and methanol and its deuterated isotopologues have been analyzed. Two stable conformations in which two hydrogen bonds between the two moieties are formed were detected. The rotational lines show a hyperfine structure due to the methyl group internal rotation in the complex and the V3 barriers hindering the motion were determined as 2.629(5) kJ mol−1 and 2.722(5) kJ mol−1 for the two conformations, respectively. Quantum mechanical calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level and comprehensive analysis of the intermolecular interactions, utilizing NCI and SAPT approaches, highlight the driving forces of the interactions and allow the determination of the binding energies of complex formation.

Rotational Spectroscopy of the Acetone-Water Complex: Large Amplitude Motions.

Acetone (CH3COCH3), the simplest ketone, has recently attracted considerable attention for its important role in atmospheric chemistry and in the formation of ices in extraterrestrial sources that contain complex organic molecules. In this study, we employed a combination of experimental rotational spectroscopy and quantum chemistry calculations to investigate the structure and dynamics of the acetone-water complex. Our aim was to understand how non-covalent interactions with water affect the methyl internal rotation dynamics of acetone, and how water-centered large amplitude motions alter the observed physical properties compared to those predicted at the equilibrium position. Detailed rotation-tunneling analyses of acetone-H2O and -D2O reveal that the interactions with water disrupt the equivalence of the two methyl rotors, resulting in a noticeably lower methyl rotor barrier for the top with the close-by water compared to that of free acetone. The barrier for the methyl group further from water is also lower, although to a lesser degree. To gain further insights, extensive theoretical modelling was conducted, focusing on the associated large amplitude motions. Furthermore, quantum theory of atoms in molecules and non-covalent interactions analyses were utilized to visualize the underlying causes of the observed trends.

The Heavy Atom Structure, "cis effect" on Methyl Internal Rotation, and 14N Nuclear Quadrupole Coupling of 1-Cyanopropene from Quantum Chemical and Microwave Spectroscopic Analysis.

The microwave spectrum of 1-cyanopropene (crotonitrile) was remeasured using two pulsed molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometers operating from 2.0 to 40.0 GHz. The molecule exists in two isomer forms, E and Z, with respect to the orientation between the methyl and the cyano groups. The spectrum of the Z isomer is more intense. Due to internal rotation of the methyl group, doublets containing A and E torsional species were found for all rotational transitions. Hyperfine splittings arising from the 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling were resolved. The heavy atom structure of the Z isomer was determined by observation of 13C and 15N isotopologue spectra in natural abundances. The experimental results were supported by quantum chemistry. The complex spectral patterns were analyzed and fitted globally, and the barriers to methyl internal rotation are determined to be 478.325(28) cm-1 and 674.632(76) cm-1 for the Z and E isomers, respectively. The non-bonded intramolecular electrostatic attraction between the methyl group and the 1-cyano substituent overcomes steric hindrance, leading to higher stability of the Z isomer. The consequence is a slight opening of 3.2° of the C(1)-C(2)-C(3) angle and a radical decrease of the methyl torsional barrier in the Z isomer due to steric repulsion.

Structure and Spectroscopic Insights for CH3PCO Isomers: A High-Level Quantum Chemical Study.

The exploration of phosphorus-bearing species stands as a prolific field in current astrochemical research, particularly within the context of prebiotic chemistry. Herein, we have employed high-level quantum chemistry methodologies to predict the structure and spectroscopic properties of isomers composed of a methyl group and three P, C, and O atoms. We have computed relative and dissociation energies, as well as rotational, rovibrational, and torsional parameters using the B2PLYPD3 functional and the explicitly correlated coupled cluster CCSD(T)-F12b method. Based upon our study, all the isomers exhibit a bent heavy atom skeleton with CH3PCO being the most stable structure, regardless of the level theory employed. Following in energy, we found four high-energy isomers, namely, CH3OCP, CH3CPO, CH3COP, and CH3OPC. The computed adiabatic dissociation energies support the stability of all [CH3, P, C, O] isomers against fragmentation into CH3 and [P, C, O]. Torsional barrier heights associated with the methyl internal rotation for each structure have been computed to evaluate the occurrence of possible A-E splittings in the rotational spectra. For the most stable isomer, CH3PCO, we found a V3 barrier of 82 cm-1, which is slightly larger than that obtained experimentally for the N-counterpart, CH3NCO, yet still very low. Therefore, the analysis of its rotational spectrum can be anticipated as a challenging task owing to the effect of the CH3 internal rotation. The complete set of spectroscopic constants and transition frequencies reported here for the most stable isomer, CH3PCO, is intended to facilitate eventual laboratory searches.

Impact of the Acetyl Group on Cysteine: A Study of N-Acetyl-Cysteine through Rotational Spectroscopy.

Herein, we report a spectroscopic study of N-acetyl-L-cysteine, an important antioxidant drug, using Fourier-transform microwave techniques and in isolated conditions. Two conformers are observed, where most stable structure adopts a cis disposition, and the second conformer has a lower abundance and adopts a trans disposition. The rotational constants and the barriers to methyl internal rotation are determined for each conformer, allowing a precise conformation identification. The results show that the cis form adopts an identical structure in the crystal, solution, and gas phases. Additionally, the structures are contrasted against those of cysteine.

Low barriers to internal rotation in the microwave spectrum of 2,5-dimethylfluorobenzene.

We investigated the rotational spectrum of 2,5-dimethylfluorobenzene containing coupled large amplitude motions of two methyl groups in the frequency range from 2 to 26.5GHz using a pulsed molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer. The internal rotation of two inequivalent methyl groups with low torsional barriers (around 16 and 226cm-1) causes splittings of all rotational transitions into quintets with separations of up to hundreds of MHz between the torsional components. Spectral analysis and modeling of the observed splittings were performed using the programs XIAM and BELGI-Cs-2Tops, whereby the latter achieved measurement accuracy. The methyl internal rotation can be used to examine the electronic and steric environments around the methyl group because they affect the methyl torsional barrier. Electronic properties play a particularly important role in aromatic molecules in the presence of a π-conjugated double bond system. The experimental results were compared with those of quantum chemistry. Benchmark calculations resulted in the conclusion that the B3LYP-D3BJ/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory can be recommended for predicting rotational constants to guide the microwave spectral assignment of dimethylfluorobenzenes in particular and toluene derivatives in general.

Microwave spectroscopic and computational analyses of the phenylacetylene⋯methanol complex: insights into intermolecular interactions.

The microwave spectra of five isotopologues of phenylacetylene⋯methanol complex, C6H5CCH⋯CH3OH, C6H5CCH⋯CH3OD, C6H5CCH⋯CD3OD, C6H5CCD⋯CH3OH and C6H5CCH⋯13CH3OH, have been observed through Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy. Rotational spectra unambiguously unveil a specific structural arrangement characterised by dual interactions between the phenylacetylene and methanol. CH3OH serves as a hydrogen bond donor to the acetylenic π-cloud while concurrently accepting a hydrogen bond from the ortho C-H group of the PhAc moiety. The fitted rotational constants align closely with the structural configuration computed at the B3LYP-D3/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory. The transitions of all isotopologues exhibit doublets owing to the methyl group's internal rotation within the methanol molecule. Comprehensive computational analyses, including natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, atoms in molecules (AIM) theory, and non-covalent interactions (NCI) index plots, reveal the coexistence of both O-H⋯π and C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds within the complex. Symmetry adapted perturbation theory with density functional theory (SAPT-DFT) calculations performed on the experimentally determined geometry provide an insight into the prominent role of electrostatic interactions in stabilising the overall structural arrangement.

Structure and dynamics of 3'-aminoacetophenone and 4'-aminoacetophenone from rotational spectroscopy.

The rotational spectra of 4'-aminoacetophenone, and those of two conformers (Z and E arrangement of the CO and NH2 groups) of 3'-aminoacetophenone and their 13C and 15N isotopologues were investigated both in the microwave (2-8 GHz) and millimetre (59.6-74.4 GHz) frequency regions using chirped pulse Fourier transform and free-jet absorption techniques, respectively. The spectra consist of μa and μb type lines that show a hyperfine structure due to both the nuclear quadrupole coupling of the 14N nucleus and the methyl internal rotation. Relative intensity measurements show that the Z form in 3'-aminoacetophenone is favoured with respect to E and the measured energy difference upper limit is about 5.5(1) kJ mol-1. Barriers to methyl internal rotation are V3 = 7.04(2) and 6.530(6) kJ mol-1 for 3'(Z)- and 4'-aminoacetophenone, respectively. Flexible model analyses of the amino inversion motion based on ab initio potential energy paths, suggest that the corresponding vibrational splitting increases up to 78% from aniline to 3'(E)-, 3'(Z), and 4-aminoacetophenone. However, due to supersonic expansion cooling, no splitting related to amine inversion is observed.

Two competing solvation pathways of 3-methylcatechol (MC), an atmospherically relevant aromatic molecule, with up to five water molecules were explored in detail by using a combination of broadband rotational spectroscopy and computational chemistry. Theoretically, two different pathways of solvation emerge: the commonly observed droplet pathway which involves preferential binding among the water molecules while the solute serves as an anchor point for the formation of a water cluster, and an unexpected wetting pathway which involves interactions between the water molecules and the aromatic face of MC, i.e., a wetting of the π-surface. Conclusive identification of the MC hydrate structures, and therefore the wetting pathway, was facilitated by rotational spectra of the parent MC hydrates and several H218O and 13C isotopologues which exhibit splittings associated with methyl internal rotation and/or water tunneling motions. Theoretical modelling and analyses offer insights into the tunneling and conversion barriers associated with the observed hydrate conformers and the nature of the non-covalent interactions involved in choosing the unusual wetting pathway.

Lutidyl Radical Photoelectron Spectra Reveal Additive Substituent Effects on Benzyl Derivatives' Ionization Energy.

Understanding how isomerism influences photoelectron spectra helps in the assignment and analysis of reactive mixtures, especially for heterocycles with numerous isomers. Threshold photoelectron spectra of lutidyl radical isomers, i. e., benzyl derivatives with a nitrogen heteroatom and a methyl substituent, are recorded using vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation. The radicals are produced by flash pyrolysis from aminomethyl methylpyridine precursors. Experimental ionization energies are determined to be 7.54, 7.50, and 7.45 eV for 2,4-, 2,6- and 3,5-lutidyl, respectively, in excellent agreement with composite method calculations. Franck-Condon simulations aid the TPES assignment but are also shown to exhibit artifacts if large-amplitude motions, notably the methyl internal rotation are assumed to be active in the double harmonic approximation. Based on calculated adiabatic ionization energies (AIE) of benzyl, picolyl, and xylyl radicals, the N and CH3 substituent effects are found to be additive, position-dependent and decrease in the para>ortho≳meta order in magnitude with the nitrogen heteroatom increasing and the methyl substituent decreasing the AIE. These effects are discussed in light of the charge distribution upon ionization. The additivity of the substituent effects also helps predict the influence of substituents on the binding energy of the unpaired electron in analogous radicals.

Low Barrier Methyl Internal Rotations and 14N Quadrupole Coupling in the Microwave Spectrum of 2,4-Dimethylthiazole.

The microwave spectrum of 2,4-dimethylthiazole was recorded using a pulsed molecular jet Fourier-transform microwave spectrometer operating in the frequency range from 2.0 to 26.5 GHz. Torsional splittings into quintets were observed for all rotational transitions due to internal rotations of two inequivalent methyl groups. Hyperfine structures arising from the nuclear quadrupole coupling of the 14N nucleus were fully resolved. The microwave spectra were analyzed using the modified version of the XIAM code and the BELGI-Cs-2Tops-hyperfine code. The barriers to methyl internal rotation of the 4- and 2-methyl groups were determined to be 396.707(25) cm-1 and 19.070(58) cm-1, respectively. The very low barrier hindering the 2-methyl torsion was a challenge for the spectral analysis and modeling, and separately fitting the five torsional species together with combination difference loops was the key for a successful assignment. The methyl torsional barriers were compared with those of other thiazole derivatives, showing the influence of the methyl group position on the barrier height. The experimental results were supported by quantum chemical calculations.

Exploring the distinct conformational preferences of allyl ethyl ether and allyl ethyl sulfide using rotational spectroscopy and computational chemistry.

The conformational energy landscapes of allyl ethyl ether (AEE) and allyl ethyl sulfide (AES) were investigated using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in the frequency range of 5-23GHz aided by density functional theory B3LYP-D3(BJ)/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations. The latter predicted highly competitive equilibria for both species, including 14 unique conformers of AEE and 12 for the sulfur analog AES within 14 kJ mol-1. The experimental rotational spectrum of AEE was dominated by transitions arising from its three lowest energy conformers, which differ in the arrangement of the allyl side chain, while in AES, transitions due to the two most stable forms, distinct in the orientation of the ethyl group, were observed. Splitting patterns attributed to methyl internal rotation were analyzed for AEE conformers I and II, and the corresponding V3 barriers were determined to be 12.172(55) and 12.373(32) kJ mol-1, respectively. The experimental ground state geometries of both AEE and AES were derived using the observed rotational spectra of the 13C and 34S isotopic species and are highly dependent on the electronic properties of the linking chalcogen (oxygen vs sulfur). The observed structures are consistent with a decrease in hybridization in the bridging atom from oxygen to sulfur. The molecular-level phenomena that drive the conformational preferences are rationalized through natural bond orbital and non-covalent interaction analyses. These show that interactions involving the lone pairs on the chalcogen atom with the organic side chains favor distinct geometries and energy orderings for the conformers of AEE and AES.

Barrier to Methyl Internal Rotation and Equilibrium Structure of 2-Methylthiophene Determined by Microwave Spectroscopy

The microwave spectrum of 2-methylthiophene was recorded in a frequency range from 2 to 26.5 GHz using a molecular-jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer with a Fabry–Pérot type resonator chamber and coaxial arrangement of the resonator and the molecular beam. Measuring and assigning spectra of the 34S and 13C isotopologues allowed the determination of the semiexperimental equilibrium structure (reSE). Comparing the structure to that of thiophene revealed a decrease in the ∠(S−C2−C3) angle from 111.595(6)° to 111.37(1)° by addition of the methyl group to the C(2) position, as well as an increase in the S−C2 bond length from 1.7102(1) Å to 1.7219(2) Å. A–E splittings from internal rotation of the methyl group were observed, and the V3 potential in the vibrational ground state was determined to be 197.7324(18) cm−1. The V3 value and the rotational constants A, B, C were calculated with a large number of different methods and basis sets for benchmarking purposes by comparing them to the fitted parameters. The V3 value was also compared to those of other thiophene and furan derivatives to gain a better understanding of the steric and electrostatic effects in these classes of compounds.

Revealing Internal Rotation and 14N Nuclear Quadrupole Coupling in the Atmospheric Pollutant 4-Methyl-2-nitrophenol: Interplay of Microwave Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemical Calculations.

The structure and interactions of oxygenated aromatic molecules are of atmospheric interest due to their toxicity and as precursors of aerosols. Here, we present the analysis of 4-methyl-2-nitrophenol (4MNP) using chirped pulse and Fabry-Pérot Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. The rotational, centrifugal distortion, and 14N nuclear quadrupole coupling constants of the lowest-energy conformer of 4MNP were determined as well as the barrier to methyl internal rotation. The latter has a value of 106.4456(8) cm-1, significantly larger than those from related molecules with only one hydroxyl or nitro substituent in the same para or meta positions, respectively, as 4MNP. Our results serve as a basis to understand the interactions of 4MNP with atmospheric molecules and the influence of the electronic environment on methyl internal rotation barrier heights.

Benchmarking acetylthiophene derivatives: methyl internal rotations in the microwave spectrum of 2-acetyl-5-methylthiophene.

The microwave spectrum of 2-acetyl-5-methylthiophene (2A5MT) was recorded using a molecular jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer working in the frequency range of 2 to 26.5 GHz. The spectrum was assigned to the syn-conformer of the molecule while that of anti-2A5MT was not observable. For the assignment of the spectrum of 2A5MT, adequate spectral analysis skill and quantum chemical benchmarking helped to significantly reduce the time required for recording survey scans. The rotational and centrifugal distortion constants were determined with high accuracy. The experimental values of the rotational constants are compared to those derived from quantum chemical calculations in the course of ongoing benchmarking effort. Splitting of each rotational transition into quintets due to internal rotations of the acetyl methyl and ring methyl groups could be resolved and analysed to yield barriers to internal rotations of 301.811(41) cm-1 and 157.2612(13) cm-1, respectively. These values are compared to those found in other thiophene and furan derivatives in order to understand the electronic effects transmitted through aromatic rings, as well as how different heteroatoms affect torsional barriers. The acetyl methyl group features torsional barriers of around 300 cm-1 if a thiophene derivative is attached at the other side of the carbonyl group. This finding allows the establishment of the so-called "thiophene class" for the acetyl group containing ketones.

Microwave spectra of dinitrotoluene isomers: a new step towards the detection of explosive vapors.

The spectroscopic characterization of explosive taggants used for TNT detection is a research topic of growing interest. We present a gas-phase rotational spectroscopic study of weakly volatile dinitrotoluene (DNT) isomers. The pure rotational spectra of 2,4-DNT and 2,6-DNT were recorded in the microwave range (2-20 GHz) using a Fabry-Perot Fourier-transform microwave (FP-FTMW) spectrometer coupled to a pulsed supersonic jet. Rotational transitions are split by hyperfine quadrupole coupling at the two 14N nuclei leading to up to 9 hyperfine components. The spectral analysis was supported by quantum chemical calculations carried out at the B98/cc-pVTZ and MP2/cc-pVTZ levels of theory. Based on 2D potential energy surfaces at the B98/cc-pVTZ level of theory, the methyl group internal rotation barriers were calculated to be V3 = 515 cm-1 and 698 cm-1 for 2,4- and 2,6-DNT, respectively. Although no splitting due to internal rotation was observed for 2,6-DNT, several splittings were observed for 2,4-DNT. The microwave spectra of both species were fitted using a semi-rigid Hamiltonian accounting for the quadrupole coupling hyperfine structure. Based on the internal axis method (IAM), an additional analysis was performed to retrieve an accurate value of the rotationless A-E tunneling splitting which could be extracted from the rotational dependence of the tunneling splitting. This yielded in the case of 2,4-DNT to an experimental value of 525 cm-1 for the barrier height V3 which agrees well with the DFT value. The coupled internal rotations of -CH3 and -NO2 are investigated in terms of 2-D surfaces, as already done in the case of 2-nitrotoluene [A. Roucou et al., Chem. Phys. Chem., 2020, 21, 2523-2538].

Fluorination effects probed in 4-fluoroacetophenone and its monohydrate.

Rotational spectra of the 4-fluoroacetophenone monomer and its monohydrate were investigated by Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented with quantum chemical calculations. One conformer of 4-fluoroacetophenone and two isomers of 4-fluoroacetophenone-H2O have been observed in the pulsed jets. The observation of all mono-substituted 13C isotopologues in natural abundance allows an accurate structural determination of the 4-fluoroacetophenone monomer. Both detected isomers of 4-fluoroacetophenone-H2O are stabilized by a dominant O-H⋯O and a secondary C-H⋯O hydrogen bond. The fluorination effects on the geometries, intermolecular non-covalent interactions and V3 barrier of the methyl internal rotation were analysed. The relative population ratio of the two observed isomers for 4-fluoroacetophenone-H2O was also estimated to be NI/NII ≈ 7/1.

Electronic Spectroscopy and Dissociation Dynamics of Vinyl-Substituted Criegee Intermediates: 2-Butenal Oxide and Comparison with Methyl Vinyl Ketone Oxide and Methacrolein Oxide Isomers

The 2-butenal oxide Criegee intermediate [(CH3CH═CH)CHOO], an isomer of the four-carbon unsaturated Criegee intermediates derived from isoprene ozonolysis, is characterized on its first π* ← π electronic transition and by the resultant dissociation dynamics to O (1D) + 2-butenal [(CH3CH═CH)CHO] products. The electronic spectrum of 2-butenal oxide under jet-cooled conditions is observed to be broad and unstructured with peak absorption at 373 nm, spanning to half maxima at 320 and 420 nm, and in good accord with the computed vertical excitation energies and absorption spectra obtained for its lowest energy conformers. The distribution of total kinetic energy released to products is ascertained through velocity map imaging of the O (1D) products. About half of the available energy, deduced from the theoretically computed asymptotic energy, is accommodated as internal excitation of the 2-butenal fragment. A reduced impulsive model is introduced to interpret the photodissociation dynamics, which accounts for the geometric changes between 2-butenal oxide and the 2-butenal fragment, and vibrational activation of associated modes in the 2-butenal product. Application of the reduced impulsive model to the photodissociation of isomeric methyl vinyl ketone oxide reveals greater internal activation of the methyl vinyl ketone product arising from methyl internal rotation and rock, which is distinctly different from the dissociation dynamics of 2-butenal oxide or methacrolein oxide.

Electronic excitation spectra of jet-cooled phenyl isocyanate, m-tolyl isocyanate, and p-phenylene diisocyanate: Assignment of the cis and trans rotational isomers.

To assign cis and trans isomers of m-tolyl isocyanate (mTI) and p-phenylene diisocyanate (pPDI) in the electronic excitation transition, we measured the time-of-flight mass-selected resonant ionization spectra of jet-cooled phenyl isocyanate (PI), mTI, and pPDI in the region of the 275nm first ππ* absorption system. In the excitation spectra of jet-cooled mTI and pPDI, cis- and trans-rotational isomers appeared as doublets. Isomers were assigned by analyzing the methyl-group internal rotation for mTI and by applying low-frequency bending vibrations to the mutual exclusion rule between the one- and two-photon spectra for pPDI. The electronic spectra of the three molecules observed in the jet were assigned to the transition to the first ππ* and third singlet excited states with the aid of time-dependent (TD)-B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ and TD-CAM-B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ calculations. The 0 - 0 band of PI was observed at 36 354cm-1, those of the cis and trans isomers of mTI at 36 018 and 35 853cm-1, respectively, and those of the cis and trans isomers of pPDI at 34 437 and 34 383cm-1, respectively. All vibronic bands were diffuse, probably because of internal conversion to two singlet nπ* states. For mTI, based on changes in the barrier height of methyl-group internal rotation upon excitation, the Hammett-σm of PI was determined to be -0.12.
