The object of analysis in this article is the Ukrainian historical novels («The Poison for the Princess» and «Gold Stirrup» by R. Ivanchenko, «Yevpraksiia» by P. Zahrebelnyi, «The Conqueror of Europe» by I. Korsak, «A candle burns» by V. Malyk). They represent the far, mystic, before unexplored epoch of the Middle Ages. It is offered to discern the interior or such as one of the aspect which presents the historical period brightly enough. Between the interiors it gives special attention to the artistic reflection of the interior decoration descriptions of the building of another nations, which became the subject of research.The settled purpose is to analyze the foreign, «alien» interiors in the artistic world of the Ukrainian novels. It estimated the solution of such tasks as –to abstract the variety of interiors; to regulate them showing the typology; to explore the image functions of these inner building spaces. During the process of research it was called the names of specialist in literature who learn the problem of interior mainly in two aspects: as a setting and place of characters’ living or as a learning of ways and methods of its representation in the specific writer in the context of ideologic and artistic searches and personal touch of style. Also, it was established the methods of the interior installing into the literary text. It mainly happens by virtue of characters’ exploring, or the novelists’ comments.During the analysis of the art representing interiors of another nations it was used the culture-historical method. It allowed to confirm a great measure of reliability/reality in the representation of the inner spaces of buildings.In conclusion it was emphasised the manysidedness, cultural multidirectionality of the interiors, which you can see in the novels. The typology of interiors has been given, in which they are distinguished by characters’ social situation, intended purpose, dynamics of the displayed things, completeness of the text, narration method, belonging to the ethnoculture.Analysis of the interiors let to allocate such artistic functions in novels as cultural, chronotopic, characterizing, psychological and the function of catching exposition.Due to the dissociation of the question of «own» — «alien» — «another» character the ways of the further study of the interior problem were outlined, which channel into the problematic of imagology.
