Angular-dependent magnetoresistance modulated by interfacial magnetic state in Pt/LSMO heterostructures.

The interfaces between heavy metals and antiferromagnetic materials have garnered significant attention due to their interesting physical properties. La0.35Sr0.65MnO3 (LSMO), as a typical manganite, exhibits an antiferromagnetic ground state that can be controlled through epitaxial strain and interfacial spin-orbit coupling. In this work, we reported the diverse magnetoresistance, influenced by the interfacial magnetic state, in Pt (3 nm)/LSMO (6-20 nm) heterostructures. The strong spin-orbit coupling of Pt and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction alter the spin structure and enhance the electron scattering at the Pt/LSMO interface, resulting in positive magnetoresistance. The interfacial angular-dependent magnetoresistance modulated by the interfacial magnetic states was also observed in the Pt/LSMO (20 nm) heterostructures. Our findings contribute to a broader understanding of interfacial properties between heavy metals and antiferromagnetic manganites.

Spin Torque Ferromagnetic Resonance Measurements in a Bulk Rashba System

While many researchers have focused on the interfacial Rashba effect, bulk Rashba materials have received considerable interest due to their potential to enhance spin–orbit torque (SOT). By utilizing GeTe as a bulk Rashba material in the role of a spin–orbit channel, GeTe/Ni81Fe19 and GeTe/Co40Fe40B20 bilayers are fabricated, and SOTs are investigated using the spin torque ferromagnetic (FM) resonance technique. In this method, damping‐like and field‐like SOTs are extracted individually, excluding thermal effects. Upon analyzing the data, a remarkable field‐like SOT efficiency of 0.40 is obtained from the GeTe/Ni81Fe19 system. This high efficiency is attributed to the enhancement of interfacial spin–orbit coupling through the bulk Rashba effect of the GeTe channel. Moreover, noticeable distinctions in SOTs are observed between the Co40Fe40B20 and Ni81Fe19 interfaces, underscoring the importance of selecting the appropriate FM layer for optimizing SOT efficiency. This study highlights the promising potential of bulk Rashba materials like GeTe in advancing SOT‐based devices.

Absence of Spin-Orbit Torque and Discovery of Anisotropic Planar Nernst Effect in CoFe Single Crystal.

Exploration of exotic spin polarizations in single crystals is of increasing interest. A current of longitudinal spins, the so-called "Dresselhaus-like" spin current, which is forbidden in materials lacking certain inversion asymmetries, is implied to be generated by a charge current at the interface of single-crystal CoFe. This workreports unambiguous evidence that there is no indication of spin current of any spin polarizations from the interface or bulk of single-crystalline CoFe and that the sin2φ second harmonic Hall voltage, which ispreviously assumed to signify Dresselhaus-like spin current, is not related to any spin currents but rather a planar Nernst voltage induced by a longitudinal temperature gradient within the sample. Such sin2φ signal is independent of large applied magnetic fields and interfacial spin-orbit coupling, inversely correlated to the heat capacity of the substrates and overlayers, quadratic in charge current, and appears also in polycrystalline ferromagnets. Strikingly, the planar Nernst effect (PNE) in the CoFe single crystal has a strong fourfold anisotropy and varies with the crystalline orientation. Such strong, anisotropic PNE has widespread impacts on the analyses of a variety of spintronic experiments and opens a new avenue for the development of PNE-based thermoelectric battery and sensor applications.

Experimental observation of interfacial Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance in Cr/YIG heterostructures

Interfacial Rashba-type spin-orbit coupling is an attractive effect to provide spin-orbit torques without the presence of heavy metals. In this work, we report the experimental observation of the Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance in the Cr/YIG heterostructure, which can indicate the presence of the interfacial spin-orbit coupling. By comparing the angular-dependent magnetoresistance of the Cr/YIG and the Cr/Cu/YIG heterostructures, we identify that the magnetoresistance in the Cr/YIG heterostructure is superimposed with two parts: the Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance induced by the interfacial spin-orbit coupling and the anisotropic magnetoresistance induced by the magnetic proximity effect. The Rashba-Edelstein magnetoresistance shows a nonsaturated external field dependence, which can be attributed to the Hanle magnetoresistance and the interfacial antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cr layer. Our findings show an approach to obtain spin-orbit torques via the interfacial spin-orbit coupling for YIG-based devices. Furthermore, our findings also provide an understanding of the multiple couplings at the $3d$-metal/YIG interface.

Significant Role of Interfacial Spin–Orbit Coupling in the Spin-to-Charge Conversion in Pt/NiFe Heterostructure

For the spin-to-charge conversion (SCC) in heavy metal/ferromagnet (HM/FM) heterostructure, the contribution of interfacial spin-orbit coupling (SOC) remains controversial. Here, we investigate the SCC process of the Pt/NiFe heterostructure by the spin pumping in YIG/Pt/NiFe/IrMn multilayers. Due to the exchange bias of NiFe/IrMn structure, the NiFe magnetization can be switched between magnetically unsaturated and saturated states by opposite resonance fields of YIG layer. The spin-pumping signal is found to decrease significantly when the NiFe magnetization is changed from the saturated state to the unsaturated state. Theoretical analysis indicates that the interfacial spin absorption is enhanced for the above-mentioned NiFe magnetic state change, which results in the increased and decreased spin flow in the Pt layer and across the Pt/NiFe interface, respectively. These results demonstrate that in our case the interfacial SOC effect at the Pt/NiFe interface is dominant over the bulk inverse spin Hall effect in the Pt layer. Our work reveals a significant role of interfacial SOC in the SCC in HM/FM heterostructure, which can promote the development of high-efficiency spintronic devices through interfacial engineering.

The effective spin-splitting manipulation of monolayer WSe2 and Janus WSSe on SrIrO3(111) surface: A DFT study

Spin regulation and manipulation in two-dimensional transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is of great significance for two-dimensional spintronics. The electronic structure and spin feature of WSe2/SrIrO3(111) and WSSe/SrIrO3(111) interfaces were investigated by first-principles calculations with spin–orbital coupling, for which various and effective stacking configurations were considered. The spin-splitting of WSe2 at K point in the Brillouin zone can be significantly enhanced by the strong spin–orbital coupling of SrIrO3, while for WSSe, the enhanced spin-splitting is found at Q point. In particular, a small compressive strain of 1% can further strengthen the spin-splitting to 630 meV at K point, along with the p-type doping in WSe2. These findings provide a way to engineer the electronic structure and spin-splitting of TMDCs via strong interfacial spin–orbital coupling and appropriate strain field, which will extend their potential applications in spintronic devices.

Engineered Kondo screening and nonzero Berry phase in SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

Controlling the interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons at the oxide interfaces can lead to exotic magnetic states. Here we devise SrTiO3/LaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures with varied thickness of the LaTiO3 layer (n monolayers) to investigate the magnetic interactions in the two-dimensional electron gas system. The heterostructures exhibit significant Kondo effect when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), manifesting the strong interaction between the itinerant electrons and the localized magnetic moments at the interfaces, while the Kondo effect is greatly inhibited when n = 20. Notably, distinct Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations are observed and a nonzero Berry phase of {\pi} is extracted when the LaTiO3 layer is rather thin (n = 2, 10), which is absent in the heterostructure with thicker LaTiO3 layer (n = 20). The observed phenomena are consistently interpreted as a result of sub-band splitting and symmetry breaking due to the interplay between the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the magnetic orderings in the heterostructures. Our findings provide a route for exploring and manipulating nontrivial electronic band structures at complex oxide interfaces.

Spin homojunction with high interfacial transparency for efficient spin-charge conversion

High interfacial transparency is vital to achieve efficient spin-charge conversion for ideal spintronic devices with low energy consumption. However, in traditional ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic heterojunctions, the interfacial Rashba spin-orbit coupling brings about spin memory loss (SML) and two-magnon scattering (TMS), quenching spin current crossing the heterointerfaces. To address the intrinsic deficiency of heterointerface, we design a ferromagnetic FeRh/antiferromagnetic FeRh spin homojunction for efficient spin-charge conversion, verified by a high interfacial transparency of 0.75 and a high spin torque efficiency of 0.34 from spin pumping measurements. First-principles calculations demonstrate that the interfacial electric field of homojunction is two orders of magnitude smaller than that of traditional heterojunction, producing negligible interfacial spin-orbit coupling to drastically reduce SML and TMS. Our spin homojunction exhibits potential and enlightenment for future energy-efficient spintronic devices.

Investigation of magnetic properties of Pt/CoFeB/MgO layers using angle-resolved spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy

We present detailed investigations of the magnetic properties of Pt/CoFeB/MgO layers as studied using the angle-resolved spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance method. Although the measurements provide reasonable magnetic parameters, we obtain an unusual value in the interfacial spin transparency if spin-pumping is assumed to be the dominant source for enhancing magnetic damping (αeff) in the nanometer thickness regime. However, the thickness dependence of the Landé g-factor (geff) for CoFeB indicates that the interfacial spin–orbit coupling plays a role in determining αeff. In addition, the azimuthal asymmetry in the magnetic system may not be related to the possibility of generating unconventional spin polarization. The results in this work are expected to aid in understanding various magnetic properties and current-induced spin-torques in a heavy-metal/ferromagnet bilayer.

Giant Orbital Anisotropy with Strong Spin–Orbit Coupling Established at the Pseudomorphic Interface of the Co/Pd Superlattice

Orbital anisotropy at interfaces in magnetic heterostructures has been key to pioneering spin–orbit‐related phenomena. However, modulating the interface's electronic structure to make it abnormally asymmetric has been challenging because of lack of appropriate methods. Here, the authors report that low‐energy proton irradiation achieves a strong level of inversion asymmetry and unusual strain at interfaces in [Co/Pd] superlattices through nondestructive, selective removal of oxygen from Co3O4/Pd superlattices during irradiation. Structural investigations corroborate that progressive reduction of Co3O4 into Co establishes pseudomorphic growth with sharp interfaces and atypically large tensile stress. The normal component of orbital to spin magnetic moment at the interface is the largest among those observed in layered Co systems, which is associated with giant orbital anisotropy theoretically confirmed, and resulting very large interfacial magnetic anisotropy is observed. All results attribute not only to giant orbital anisotropy but to enhanced interfacial spin–orbit coupling owing to the pseudomorphic nature at the interface. They are strongly supported by the observation of reversal of polarity of temperature‐dependent Anomalous Hall signal, a signature of Berry phase. This work suggests that establishing both giant orbital anisotropy and strong spin–orbit coupling at the interface is key to exploring spintronic devices with new functionalities.

Spin-Orbit-Torque Efficiency and Current-Driven Coherent Magnetic Dynamics in a Pt / Ni /Py Trilayer-Based Spin Hall Nano-Oscillator

We experimentally study the current-induced effective spin-orbit torque (SOT) efficiency and the spectral characteristics of current-driven coherent magnetic dynamics in spin Hall nano-oscillators (SHNOs) based on the $\mathrm{Pt}$/$\mathrm{Ni}$/Py trilayer. We determine that the $\mathrm{Pt}$/$\mathrm{Ni}$/Py trilayer structure has an effective dampinglike torque efficiency ${\ensuremath{\xi}}_{\mathrm{DL}}\ensuremath{\sim}0.055$, comparable with the $\mathrm{Pt}$/$\mathrm{Co}$ and $\mathrm{Pt}$/$\mathrm{Fe}$ bilayer systems with a strong interfacial spin-orbit coupling and magnetic proximity effect. Furthermore, the microwave-generation spectra show that the $\mathrm{Pt}$/$\mathrm{Ni}$/Py-based SHNOs exhibit a single nonlinear self-localized bullet mode with a frequency below ${f}_{\mathrm{FMR}}$ and a significant current-dependent frequency red shift due to its strong nonlinear effect, which is very similar to that in $\mathrm{Pt}$/Py-based SHNOs, at low oblique angles $\ensuremath{\varphi}\ensuremath{\le}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{50}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$. In contrast, at high oblique angles $\ensuremath{\varphi}\ensuremath{\ge}\phantom{\rule{0.2em}{0ex}}{55}^{\ensuremath{\circ}}$, the spectra show two oscillating peaks with very similar field-, current-, and temperature-dependent behaviors, which suggests the spatial coexistence of two same-type nonlinear self-localized bullet modes at certain currents and magnetic fields. Additionally, the observed linear temperature dependence of the minimum line width, which resembles the thermal broadening of single-mode oscillation, further confirms that two localized bullet modes are independent, spatially separated, and lack thermally activated mode-transition behavior. Our results provide valuable information for the electronic control of coherent magnetic dynamics by combining bulk and interfacial spin-orbit coupling effects in the magnetic heterostructures.

Critical role of orbital hybridization in the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction of magnetic interfaces

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), an interfacial spin-orbit coupling (ISOC)-related effect, has become foundational for spintronic research and magnetic memory and computing technologies. However, the underlying mechanism of DMI, including the quantitative role of ISOC, has remained a long-standing unsettled problem due to the great challenge in quantifying and widely tuning ISOC strength in a strong DMI material system. Here, we find that DMI, ISOC, and orbital hybridization at the model magnetic interface Au1-xPtx/Co can be quantified and tuned significantly at the same time through the composition of the Au1-xPtx, without varying the bulk SOC and the electronegativity. From this ability, we establish that the widespread expectation that DMI should scale in linear proportion to ISOC breaks down at the Au1-xPtx/Co interface where degree of orbital hybridization varies with the Au1-xPtx composition and that the unexpected DMI behaviors can be understood well by the critical role of orbital hybridization. Our study provides a quantitative frame for comprehensively understanding interfacial DMI of various magnetic interfaces and establishes orbital hybridization as a new degree of freedom for controlling DMI in high-performance chiral domain wall/skyrmion devices and ultrafast magnetic tunnel junctions.

Enhancement of spin-orbit torque efficiency by tailoring interfacial spin-orbit coupling in Pt-based magnetic multilayers

We study inserting Co layer thickness-dependent spin transport and spin–orbit torques (SOTs) in the Pt/Co/Py trilayers by spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance. The interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (IPMA) energy density (K s = 2.7 erg/cm2, 1 erg = 10−7 J), which is dominated by interfacial spin–orbit coupling (ISOC) in the Pt/Co interface, total effective spin-mixing conductance ) and two-magnon scattering (β TMS = 0.46 nm2) are first characterized, and the damping-like torque (ξ DL = 0.103) and field-like torque (ξ FL = –0.017) efficiencies are also calculated quantitatively by varying the thickness of the inserting Co layer. The significant enhancement of ξ DL and ξ FL in Pt/Co/Py than Pt/Py bilayer system originates from the interfacial Rashba–Edelstein effect due to the strong ISOC between Co-3d and Pt-5d orbitals at the Pt/Co interface. Additionally, we find a considerable out-of-plane spin polarization SOT, which is ascribed to the spin anomalous Hall effect and possible spin precession effect due to IPMA-induced perpendicular magnetization at the Pt/Co interface. Our results demonstrate that the ISOC of the Pt/Co interface plays a vital role in spin transport and SOTs-generation. Our finds offer an alternative approach to improve the conventional SOTs efficiencies and generate unconventional SOTs with out-of-plane spin polarization to develop low power Pt-based spintronic via tailoring the Pt/FM interface.

Field-like spin\u2013orbit torque induced by bulk Rashba channels in GeTe/NiFe bilayers

Most studies of the Rashba effect have focused on interfacial Rashba spin–orbit coupling. Recently, bulk Rashba materials have attracted considerable interest owing to their potential to enhance the Rashba spin–orbit torque. By employing a bulk Rashba material, GeTe, as a spin–orbit channel in GeTe/NiFe bilayers, a large field-like spin–orbit torque up to 15.8 mT/(107 A cm−2) is measured. This value is one of the largest reported field-like torques and is attributed to the interfacial spin–orbit coupling being enhanced by the bulk Rashba effect in the GeTe channel. Furthermore, the large field-like torque is maintained even for a 20-nm-thick NiFe layer. This unconventional dependence on the thickness of both the GeTe and NiFe layers cannot be described by conventional theory, but it is believed to stem from the additional bulk Rashba effect-induced term. The large field-like torque over a wide range of ferromagnet thicknesses results in scalable in-plane spin–orbit torque devices. This result calls for a further theoretical study on spin transport in heterostructures, including bulk Rashba materials.

Interfacial control of vortex-limited critical current in type-II superconductor films

In a small subset of type-II superconductor films, the critical current is determined by a weakened Bean-Livingston barrier posed by the film surfaces to vortex penetration into the sample. A film property thus depends sensitively on the surface or interface to an adjacent material. We theoretically investigate the dependence of vortex barrier and critical current in such films on the Rashba spin-orbit coupling at their interfaces with adjacent materials. Considering an interface with a magnetic insulator, we find the spontaneous supercurrent resulting from the exchange field and interfacial spin-orbit coupling to substantially modify the vortex surface barrier, consistent with a previous prediction. Thus, we show that the critical currents in superconductor-magnet heterostructures can be controlled, and even enhanced, via the interfacial spin-orbit coupling. Since the latter can be controlled via a gate voltage, our analysis predicts a class of heterostructures amenable to gate-voltage modulation of superconducting critical currents. It also sheds light on the recently observed gate-voltage enhancement of critical current in NbN superconducting films.

Large spin-charge interconversion induced by interfacial spin-orbit coupling in a highly conducting all-metallic system

Spin-charge interconversion in systems with spin-orbit coupling has provided a new route for the generation and detection of spin currents in functional devices for memory and logic such as spin-orbit torque switching in magnetic memories or magnetic state reading in spin-based logic. Disentangling the bulk (spin Hall effect) from the interfacial (inverse spin galvanic effect) contribution has been a common issue to properly quantify the spin-charge interconversion in these systems, being the case of Au paradigmatic. Here, we obtain a large spin-charge interconversion at a highly conducting Au/Cu interface which is experimentally shown to arise from the inverse spin galvanic effect of the interface and not from the spin Hall effect of bulk Au. We use two parameters independent of the microscopic details to properly quantify the spin-charge interconversion and the spin losses due to the interfacial spin-orbit coupling, providing an adequate benchmarking to compare with any spin-charge interconversion system. The good performance of this metallic interface, not based in Bi, opens the path to the use of much simpler light/heavy metal systems.

Dynamic Spin-Triplet Order Induced by Alternating Electric Fields in Superconductor-Ferromagnet-Superconductor Josephson Junctions.

Dynamic states offer extended possibilities to control the properties of quantum matter. Recent efforts are focused on studying the ordered states which appear exclusively under the time-dependent drives. Here, we demonstrate a class of systems which feature dynamic spin-triplet superconducting order stimulated by the alternating electric field. The effect is based on the interplay of ferromagnetism, interfacial spin-orbital coupling, and the condensate motion driven by the field, which converts hidden static p-wave order, produced by the joint action of the ferromagnetism and the spin-orbital coupling, into dynamic s-wave equal-spin-triplet correlations. We demonstrate that the critical current of Josephson junctions hosting these states is proportional to the electromagnetic power, supplied either by the external irradiation or by the ac current source. Based on these unusual properties we propose the scheme of a Josephson transistor which can be switched by the ac voltage and demonstrates an even-numbered sequence of Shapiro steps. Combining the photoactive Josephson junctions with recently discovered Josephson phase batteries we find photomagnetic SQUID devices which can generate spontaneous magnetic fields while being exposed to irradiation.

Superconductivity assisted change of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in V/MgO/Fe junctions

Controlling the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) in thin films has received considerable attention in recent years due to its technological importance. PMA based devices usually involve heavy-metal (oxide)/ferromagnetic-metal bilayers, where, thanks to interfacial spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the in-plane (IP) stability of the magnetisation is broken. Here we show that in V/MgO/Fe(001) epitaxial junctions with competing in-plane and out-of-plane (OOP) magnetic anisotropies, the SOC mediated interaction between a ferromagnet (FM) and a superconductor (SC) enhances the effective PMA below the superconducting transition. This produces a partial magnetisation reorientation without any applied field for all but the largest junctions, where the IP anisotropy is more robust; for the smallest junctions there is a reduction of the field required to induce a complete OOP transition (H_text {OOP}) due to the stronger competition between the IP and OOP anisotropies. Our results suggest that the degree of effective PMA could be controlled by the junction lateral size in the presence of superconductivity and an applied electric field. We also discuss how the H_text {OOP} field could be affected by the interaction between magnetic stray fields and superconducting vortices. Our experimental findings, supported by numerical modelling of the ferromagnet-superconductor interaction, open pathways to active control of magnetic anisotropy in the emerging dissipation-free superconducting spin electronics.

Dependence of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and damping in Co-based systems on the thickness of Pt and Ir layers

Ir and Pt thickness dependences of the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (iDMI), the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), and the damping in Co-based systems grown by sputtering on Si substrates, using Ir or Pt under or overlayer of variable thickness ($0\ensuremath{\le}{t}_{\mathrm{Pt}}\ensuremath{\le}3.5\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ and $0\ensuremath{\le}{t}_{\mathrm{Ir}}\ensuremath{\le}1.5\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$), were investigated using Brillouin light scattering. Vibrating sample magnetometry measurements revealed a significant decrease of the areal magnetic moment at saturation as the thickness ${t}_{\mathrm{Pt}}$ or ${t}_{\mathrm{Ir}}$ of the overlayer increases, most likely due to the increasing intermixing. The intermixing, found to be negligible for Ir and Pt underlayers, is stronger for Ir than Pt overlayers. Damping measurements for Pt-based systems allowed us to conclude with the strong spin-pumping contribution. The analysis of the ${t}_{\mathrm{Pt}}$ dependence of damping, within the spin-pumping model, allowed us to determine the spin-diffusion length of Pt, found to be greater when Pt is used as an underlayer. The ${t}_{\mathrm{Pt}}$ dependence of the effective PMA and iDMI constants, for which similar trends to that of damping were observed, were qualitatively analyzed to separate the contribution of each interface with Co. It was found that these constants are stronger when Co is grown on Pt, most probably due to weaker intermixing at the Pt/Co interface. Linear dependence of damping vs the PMA effective constant was evidenced, confirming their relationship with spin-orbit coupling (SOC). A linear variation of the PMA effective constant vs the iDMI constant was observed in systems using Pt underlayer, whereas quadratic or linear correlations are possible when Pt is used as an overlayer, probably due to change of the interface SOC by the strong intermixing at the Co/Pt interface. The qualitative analysis of the Ir thickness dependence of iDMI and PMA constants revealed a significant (weak) contribution of the Ir/Co interface to PMA (iDMI). The surface iDMI constant of the Co/Ir interface was estimated to be 0.4 \ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{} 0.1 pJ/m, which confirms the similar iDMI sign of Co/Ir and Co/Pt interfaces.
