The participation of nursing students in the network for the prevention of occupational accidents - REPAT

This study had the goal to assess the experienced lived by undergraduate honor nursing students, involved in research, as participants of the Network for the prevention of occupational accidents with exposure to biological substance – REPAT, acooperative interdisciplinary research network, held among researchers, students, Occupational Health specialists, and hospital representatives from many Brazilian regions. Data were collected by means of a documental research of the work reports of students who were participants in the network. The content of written testimonies were analyzes using a qualitative approach. Results showed that students’ participation offered them knowledge acquisition in terms of how science is produced, research elaboration, the methodologies used to study occupational risks and skills for preventing occupational accidents, besides learning about the applicability of research in the adjustment of safe work activities.

Assessing the Response of Terrestrial Ecosystems to Potential Changes in Precipitation

Changes in Earth’s surface temperatures caused by anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are expected to affect global and regional precipitation regimes. Interactions between changing precipitation regimes and other aspects of global change are likely to affect natural and managed terrestrial ecosystems as well as human society. Although much recent research has focused on assessing the responses of terrestrial ecosystems to rising carbon dioxide or temperature, relatively little research has focused on understanding how ecosystems respond to changes in precipitation regimes. Here we review predicted changes in global and regional precipitation regimes, outline the consequences of precipitation change for natural ecosystems and human activities, and discuss approaches to improving understanding of ecosystem responses to changing precipitation. Further, we introduce the Precipitation and Ecosystem Change Research Network (PrecipNet), a new interdisciplinary research network assembled to encourage and foster communication and collaboration across research groups with common interests in the impacts of global change on precipitation regimes, ecosystem structure and function, and the human enterprise.

Interdisciplinary research is key to understanding sex differences: report from the Society for Women's Health Research Meeting on understanding the biology of sex differences.

Progress in sex-based biology, the study of biological and behavioral differences between males and females, and the impact of those differences on health and disease will require collaboration across research disciplines and medical specialties and among all research approaches, from molecular biology to epidemiology. The importance of sex-based biology to healthcare necessitates a bench-to-bedside approach that is built on integration of research findings from studies at the cellular level, in animals, and in human subjects. Barriers to interdisciplinary collaborations are being addressed in a variety of ways by public and private funders. The J.D. and C.T. MacArthur Foundation supports interdisciplinary research networks that address broad questions in health and behavior. The National Institute of Mental Health supports cross-disciplinary research networks investigating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal network. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development offers grants for Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health. The National Science Foundation Directorate for Biological Sciences sponsors Research Coordination Networks in Biological Sciences. Among the challenges faced by interdisciplinary research programs are appropriate peer review, career advancement for young investigators with interdisciplinary training, and acceptance of interdisciplinary research reports by high-quality scientific publications.

Angels on a pinhead: new research networks for nanotechnology

Nanotechnology promises to be the defining science of the 21st century. With its integration of the organic and inorganic worlds, it represents more than simply a continuation of the principles of microtechnology. Because of this it requires new structures of R&D management, and new communication processes. A number of recent foresight studies identify potential future applications for European industry and point to the strengths and weaknesses of Member States. But only new interdisciplinary research networks will enable Europe to harness the power of nanotechnology – or prepare its citizens for the benefits.

Studying Social Transformation

Global change and the increasing importance of transnational flows and networks in all areas of social life create new challenges for the social sciences. However, their underlying assumptions are linked to their origins in Western models of industrialization and nation-state formation. There is still considerable national specificity in modes of organization, theoretical and methodological approaches, research questions, and findings. In contrast, social transformation studies can be understood as the analysis of transnational connectedness and the way this affects national societies, local communities, and individuals. New research approaches include a focus on transnational processes; analysis of local dimensions of change using participatory methods; and the construction of international and interdisciplinary research networks.

Foundation of a Global Interdisciplinary Research Network (COLLNET) with Berlin as the Virtual Centre

The growing importance of collaboration in research and the still underdeveloped state-of-the-art of research on collaboration have encouraged scientists from16 countries to establish a global interdisciplinary research network under the title “Collaboration in Science and in Technology” (COLLNET)with Berlin as its virtual centre which has been set up on January 1st, 2000.The network is to comprise the prominent scientists, who work at present mostly in the field of quantitative science studies. The intention is to work together in co-operation both on theoretical and applied aspects.

The chinese ecological research network

The Chinese Ecological Research Network (CERN), proposed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1987 and authorized by Chinese Government in 1991, is a comprehensive research network system of linking established ecological and environmental observation and experiment stations located at different natural zones across China. The characteristics of CERN are as follows: 1) CERN is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive research network; 2) CERN will focus on the studies on the trends of changes in structures and functions of ecosystems under the strong actions of human activities; 3) CERN will predict macro-ecological environmental problems caused by human activities. CERN includes three levels, i.e. ecological research stations subcenters and synthetic centers, and four support systems, i.e. research system and management system. The ecological research stations are the basic units of CERN to make the long-term monitoring for ecological and environmental elements, and also the bodies to conduct comprehensive studies on structures and functions of ecosystems. At present, CERN has 52 research stations, among which 26 are agricultural ecological stations, 13 forest ecological stations, 5 grassland ecological stations, and 8 lake and sea stations. The subcenters are nodes of CERN. Four subcenters are planned at the present stage. They are Hydrological subcenter, Soil subcenter, Atmospheric subcenter and Biological subcenter. The Synthetic Center plays the role of the pivot of the network.
