The Assessment of a Magnetizing-Current Inrush of a Power Transformer

The study aims to propose an analytical tool for determining the parameters of the power transformer magnetizing inrush current caused by geomagnetically induced currents flowing through high-voltage windings with a grounded neutral under the impact of geomagnetic disturbances on the power grid. The analytical equations for the instantaneous magnetizing current under geomagnetic disturbances were obtain by mathematical model of magnetizing branch for a shell-type power transformer. A model base on a magnetization characteristics piecewise-linear approximation for the electrical steel. The magnetizing inrush current amplitude and duration it was found depends on the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances and in cope-link with the dynamics of the power transformer core saturation transient process were determined the changes in the magnetizing inrush current amplitude and duration under geomagnetic disturbances. The magnetizing inrush current amplitude it was found may reach the level of short-circuit current periodic component at the point of power transformer grid connection. The results were verify by comparing the design and experimental values of the magnetizing inrush current amplitude. The advantages of proposed mathematical model shown with justifying the analogy between core saturation under connecting of power transformer to a grid and under geomagnetically induced currents exposed. The piecewise-linear approximation of power transformer magnetization characteristic, allow to obtain the amplitude value of magnetizing inrush current caused by geomagnetically induced currents with an accuracy of 6% and can be used with power grid steady state and transient simulation under geomagnetic disturbances.

Dynamics and spatio-temporal distribution of geomagnetic disturbances during periods of increased solar activity and magnetic storms

A detailed spatio-temporal analysis of magnetic data was performed during the periods of magnetic storms on October 02, 2013 and September 27, 2019 based on measurements of the station network. In this work, we used a method developed by us for the analysis of magnetic data, based on the use of wavelet transform and adaptive thresholds. The method allows us to identify short-period field disturbances and estimate their intensity from the data of the H-component of the geomagnetic field. The features of the occurrence and propagation of geomagnetic disturbances in the auroral zone and at meridionally located stations have been studied. Dynamic spectra of disturbances of different intensity and duration are obtained. The paper confirms the possibility of occurrence of short-period weak geomagnetic disturbances at stations from high latitudes to the equator, preceding magnetic storms and correlating with fluctuations of the southern Bz-component of the interplanetary magnetic field and increases in the auroral indices of geomagnetic activity. Cross-correlation dependences of the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances on the parameters of the interplanetary medium during magnetic storms were obtained from the data of the network of magnetic stations. A statistically significant influence of the magnitude of the scope of the Bz-component of the IMF and the speed of the solar wind on the development of magnetic storms during the initial and main phases of magnetic storms was revealed.

The mathematical model of a shell-core power transformer’s magnetization branch is substantiated. By using the model, analytical expressions for the magnetizing current instantaneous values under the conditions of geomagnetic disturbances can be obtained. Quantitative assessments of the magnetizing inrush current amplitudes and durations versus the geomagnetic disturbance intensity are obtained. The dynamics of the power transformer magnetic system saturation transient and changes in the magnetization inrush current amplitudes and durations after a sudden occurrence of geomagnetic disturbances are shown. The error of estimating the magnetizing inrush current amplitudes under geomagnetic disturbances is determined based on comparison with experimental data.

Modeling Geomagnetically Induced Currents From Magnetometer Measurements: Spatial Scale Assessed With Reference Measurements

AbstractSolar‐driven disturbances generate geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) that can result in power grid instability and, in the most extreme cases, even failure. Magnetometers provide direct measurements of the geomagnetic disturbance (GMD) effect on the surface magnetic field and GIC response can be determined from the power grid topology and engineering parameters. This paper considers this chain of models: transforming surface magnetic field disturbance to induced surface electric field through an electromagnetic transfer function and, then, induced surface electric field to GIC using the PowerWorld simulator to model a realistic power grid topology. Comparisons are made to transformer neutral current reference measurements provided by the American Transmission Company. Three GMD intervals are studied, with the Kp index reaching 8− on 2 October 2013, 7 on 1 June 2013, and 6− on 9 October 2013. Ultimately, modeled to measured GIC correlations are analyzed as a function of magnetometer to GIC sensor distance. Results indicate that modeling fidelity during the three studied GMD intervals is strongly dependent on both magnetometer to substation transformer baseline distance and GMD intensity.

Analysis of magnetic data of ground station network during strong magnetic storms

The paper suggests a new technique for magnetic data analysis to detect and to estimate short-time anomalous increases in geomagnetic disturbance intensity. Based on the technique and applying the data of meridionally arranged stations in the north-east of Russia («Kotel’nyi» KTN, «Tixi» TIX, «Chokurdakh» CHD, «Zyryanka» ZYK, «Mys Shmidta» CPS, «Yakutsk» YAK, «Magadan» MGD, «Paratunka» PET, «Khabarovsk» KHB) and the near equatorial Indian stations (“Hyderabad” HYB and “Choutuppal” CPL), we analyzed the geomagnetic field variations during strong magnetic storms. This approach allowed us to detect simultaneously occurring local increases in geomagnetic activity observed a few hours before events and during the main phases of magnetic storms.

Effects of energetic particles precipitation on stratospheric ozone in the Southern Hemisphere

Measurements from TOMS and UARS-HALOE are used to estimate the effects of energetic particle precipitation (EPP) over the stratosphere during two geomagnetic storms occurred in November of the years 2003 and 2004. The EPP couples the solar wind to the Earth’s atmosphere and indirectly to the Earth’s climate. Due to particle precipitation, the ionization and dissociation increase, and create odd nitrogen (NOx) and odd hydrogen (HOx) in the upper atmosphere, which can affect ozone chemistry. In this paper, statistically significant variation in total ozone content at middle latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere is observed. The variations depend on the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances and the geomagnetic longitude. A significant variation in NOx concentration at altitudes from 30 to 50km is observed from the profiles analysis.

Methods of analysis of geomagnetic field variations and cosmic ray data

In the present paper, we propose a wavelet-based method of describing variations in the Earth’s magnetic field, such as the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field, in addition to methods for evaluating changes in the energy characteristics of the field and for isolating the periods of increased geomagnetic activity. Based on a combination of multiresolution wavelet decompositions with neural networks, we propose a method of approximation of the cosmic ray time course and the allocation of anomalous variations (Forbush effects) that occur during periods of high solar activity. During the realization of the method, an algorithm was created for selecting the level of the wavelet decomposition and adaptive construction of the neural network. By using the proposed methods, we performed a joint analysis of the geomagnetic field and cosmic rays during periods of strong magnetic storms. The strongest geomagnetic field perturbations were observed in periods of abnormal changes in cosmic ray level. Assessment of the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances on the eve of and during magnetic storm development allowed us to highlight local increases in intensity of the geomagnetic field occurring at different frequency ranges prior to the development of the storm’s main phase. Implementation of the proposed method with theoretical tools in combination with other methods will improve the estimation accuracy of the geomagnetic field state during space weather forecasting.

The Relationship between Geomagnetic Disturbances and Multiple Sclerosis at the Edge of the Auroral Zone

Objective: The impact of geomagnetic disturbances at the earth’s surface is greatest at higher geomagnetic latitudes, particularly between 60-75°. The prevalence of multiple sclerosis (MS) also has a latitudinal gradient. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the hypothesis that geomagnetic disturbances may have a role in the development of multiple sclerosis (MS). Methods: A retrospective design was used to examine the correlations between the birth rate of MS patients and two geomagnetic indices, sunspots and the A-index. Birth rate data was derived from a clinical database of patients residing in a region near 60° N geomagnetic latitude from 1920-1980. Results: Results indicated that the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances, as measured by the A-index, had a stronger relationship to MS birth rate than the count of sunspots. Overall, the A-indices had small to moderate correlations with MS birth rates, combined (r=0.31-0.50) and by sex (male r=0.28-0.43; female r=0.24-0.50), over 60 years. Correlations were stronger as the length of exposure increased. That is, exposure in early childhood (birth year+3 years) and throughout childhood (birth year+12 years) exhibited generally higher correlations (early r=0.28-0.49; throughout r=0.24-0.50) than exposure during birth year alone (r=0.30-0.39). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that geomagnetic disturbances may be a risk factor in the development of MS. The cumulative effect of exposure may be of importance. The advantages of examining exposure in utero and childhood are that birth cohorts can examine risk factors occurring early in life, can reduce the impact of period effects, and can meet the assumption of order-effect as we search for causal factors contributing to MS. High‐speed stream impacts on the equatorial ionization anomaly region during the deep solar minimum year 2008

To demonstrate high‐speed stream effects during the recent deep solar minimum year 2008, we have analyzed manually scaledfoF2 and hmF2 at Jicamarca and total electron content (TEC) in the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) region over the America longitudinal sector. Our results reveal that a prominent 9 day oscillation appears in the hmF2 and foF2 at the dip equator. The 9 day oscillation amplitudes of foF2are not always positively correlated with TEC in the equatorial ionosphere, and they show nonlinear dependence on the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances. With the outputs of Fejer and Scherliess's (1997) empirical model, we found that this periodicity is also present in equatorial vertical drifts caused by disturbance dynamoelectric field (DDEF) but absent in the drifts due to prompt penetration electric field (PPEF). DDEF effects on the equatorial periodic variations alone are not sufficient to explain the observed phenomena; other mechanisms, such as thermal expansion/contraction and neutral composition changes, are also the plausible causes of the periodic oscillation in the equatorial ionosphere. Further, the complicated patterns appear in the 9 day band‐pass‐filtered TEC perturbations in the EIA region, and they are quite different from the patterns of global coherent thermospheric oscillations triggered by high‐speed streams. We also found that the latitudinal variations of band‐passed‐filtered TEC present different behaviors involving tilt latitudinal configuration, antiphased correlation between the crests and trough, and south‐north asymmetry, which vary as a function of season, local time, or even from event to event.

Time delay and duration of ionospheric total electron content responses to geomagnetic disturbances

Abstract. Although positive and negative signatures of ionospheric storms have been reported many times, global characteristics such as the time of occurrence, time delay and duration as well as their relations to the intensity of the ionospheric storms have not received enough attention. The 10 years of global ionosphere maps (GIMs) of total electron content (TEC) retrieved at Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) were used to conduct a statistical study of the time delay of the ionospheric responses to geomagnetic disturbances. Our results show that the time delays between geomagnetic disturbances and TEC responses depend on season, magnetic local time and magnetic latitude. In the summer hemisphere at mid- and high latitudes, the negative storm effects can propagate to the low latitudes at post-midnight to the morning sector with a time delay of 4–7 h. As the earth rotates to the sunlight, negative phase retreats to higher latitudes and starts to extend to the lower latitude toward midnight sector. In the winter hemisphere during the daytime and after sunset at mid- and low latitudes, the negative phase appearance time is delayed from 1–10 h depending on the local time, latitude and storm intensity compared to the same area in the summer hemisphere. The quick response of positive phase can be observed at the auroral area in the night-side of the winter hemisphere. At the low latitudes during the dawn-noon sector, the ionospheric negative phase responses quickly with time delays of 5–7 h in both equinoctial and solsticial months. Our results also manifest that there is a positive correlation between the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances and the time duration of both the positive phase and negative phase. The durations of both negative phase and positive phase have clear latitudinal, seasonal and magnetic local time (MLT) dependence. In the winter hemisphere, long durations for the positive phase are 8–11 h and 12–14 h during the daytime at middle and high latitudes for 20≤Ap<40 and Ap≥40.

Forecasting the velocity of quasi-stationary solar wind and the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances produced by it

A brief review is given of contemporary approaches to solving the problem of medium-term forecast of the velocity of quasi-stationary solar wind (SW) and of the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances caused by it. At the present time, two promising models of calculating the velocity of quasi-stationary SW at the Earth’s orbit are realized. One model is the semi-empirical model of Wang-Sheeley-Arge (WSA) which allows one to calculate the dependence V(t) of SW velocity at the Earth’s orbit using measured values of the photospheric magnetic field. This model is based on calculation of the local divergence fS of magnetic field lines. The second model is semi-empirical model by Eselevich-Fainshtein-Rudenko (EFR). It is based on calculation in a potential approximation of the area of foot points on the solar surface of open magnetic tubes (sources of fast quasistationary SW). The new Bd-technology is used in these calculations, allowing one to calculate instantaneous distributions of the magnetic field above the entire visible surface of the Sun. Using predicted V(t) profiles, one can in EFR model calculate also the intensity of geomagnetic disturbances caused by quasi-stationary SW. This intensity is expressed through the Kp index. In this paper the EFR model is discussed in detail. Some examples of epignosis and real forecast of V(t) and Kp(t) are discussed. A comparison of the results of applying these two models for the SW velocity forecasting is presented.
