Formation of patriotism as a theoretical and practical problem modern Ukrainian education

The publication describes the transformation of scientific views on patriotic upbringing in modern Ukraine (since the beginning of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014 and the full-scale invasion of the Russians in 2022. The methods of pedagogical research of modern patriotic upbringing in educational institutions of Ukraine (theoretical, empirical, experimental and mathematical statistics) are outlined. It is indicated that military threats significantly limit it. The principles of modern patriotic upbringing are described (purposefulness, the connection of upbringin with life, the unity of consciousness and behavior, upbringin in work, a comprehensive approach in upbringin, education of the individual in a team, combining pedagogical leadership with the initiative and self-activity of students, the combination of respect for the student's personality with reasonable demands on him, an individual approach to students in education, systematicity, consistency and continuity in upbringing, unity of pedagogical requirements of the school, family and the public). The current periodization of the Russian-Ukrainian war of the 21st century, developed by specialists from the National University of Defense named after I. Chernyakhovsky, specialists from the Military History Research Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Main Operational Directorate of the General Directorate of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, has been characterized. Employees of educational institutions will be able to use this periodization of the war in the process of upbringing and educational activities. It is proposed to work out certain aspects of the theme of the modern Russian-Ukrainian war in the process of patriotic upbringing, as this will contribute to the sublimation of the collective trauma of children and adults. Remarks are given regarding taking into account the age characteristics of students of different classes. The key questions that students will hypothetically ask themselves and to which they will seek answers are presented. By focusing on them, teachers will be able to carry out patriotic upbringing of children and youth of different ages with maximum efficiency (How does this apply to me and those I know personally? What can I do right now? What can I do good? What can I do useful? Who is my place after school?).

BEFORE NBER: WARREN NUTTER’S SOVIET RESEARCH AT THE CIA

Warren Nutter’s work as director of the National Bureau of Economic Research’s (NBER) Soviet growth project is his best-known contribution to economics and public affairs. Many histories of Sovietology note the oddity of Nutter’s selection as project director, given his apparent lack of prior experience studying the Soviet Union. This paper provides new context for Nutter’s selection to lead the NBER effort. From 1951 to 1952 Nutter was the acting chief of the Economic Capabilities Branch of the CIA’s Office of Research and Reports (ORR), and chairman of the Economic Analysis Subcommittee of the interagency Economic Intelligence Committee. In this capacity he managed at least three major research efforts, including an input-output analysis of the Soviet Union and contributions to two national intelligence estimates. Nutter may have been proposed as director of the NBER project by Robert Amory, the Deputy Director of Intelligence, in 1953. Nutter’s research for the CIA cultivated new analytic capacities for the agency and provided a foundation for his own work on the Soviet Union.

Israeli Intelligence Was Caught Off Guard: The Hamas Attack on 7 October 2023—A Preliminary Analysis

On the morning of 7 October 2023, at 6:29 AM, Israel was surprised when forces of the Hamas organization attacked Israel from the Gaza Strip, along the border between Gaza and Israel, and caused enormous damage to human life and property. On that day, about 1,300 Israelis were killed, most of them civilians and the rest soldiers. About 240 Israelis were kidnapped and taken into Gaza as hostages. Israel had no concrete warning of the coming attack. It was a complete surprise to the Intelligence Community (IC) and security system. Following this attack, Israel went to war against Hamas, in Gaza, calling it the Iron Swords War, with the intent of collapsing its military power and governing rule. The lack of intelligence warning raises many questions about the capability of the Israeli IC, especially the Israel Military Intelligence Directorate (IMI) and the Israel Security Agency (ISA). Israel’s intelligence had known of the strengthening of Hamas, but there was an assumption that Hamas had changed its objectives and aimed to establish its rule and statehood in Gaza. As a result, it was assumed that Hamas would refrain from offensive action that would, in turn, provoke counterattacks by Israel, which would not serve its interests. The Israeli IC assumed that if Hamas decided to attack, the ISA and the IMI would provide early warning. Only on 7 October did Israel learn that Hamas was secretly intensifying its efforts to prepare an attack on Israel.

Fulfilling his debt to civilization: American filmmaker Harold Marvin Shaw, British wartime propaganda, and the anti-Bolshevik The Land of Mystery, 1914–1920

ABSTRACT The Land of Mystery (1920) was a melodrama movie based on a fictionalized life of Vladimir Lenin, made by the American filmmaker Harold Marvin Shaw. Shaw had previously made drama films with wartime propaganda content in Britain and South Africa. The Land of Mystery was financed by Russian exile Boris Said, and the story was written by Basil Thomson, Britain’s Director of Intelligence. It was partly filmed in a rush on location in war-torn Lithuania, as well as in a London studio. When it was exhibited, The Land of Mystery (1920) was described in The Bioscope trade journal as having ‘caused more discussion than any British film of the last five years’. However, no copy of the film survives. This article reconstructs the circumstances in which the film was made, and suggests that Shaw was compromised by the prejudices of Thomson and Said.

On the basis of the conducted analysis, a conclusion is made about the proper normalization of the activities of the intelligence units of the National Guard of Ukraine in a special period (including during the period of martial law). During this period, units of the National Guard of Ukraine may be involved by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine to perform military intelligence tasks and functions. In this case, the intelligence agency is the initiator of the intelligence activities, and units of the National Guard of Ukraine can conduct military intelligence at the tactical level on their own initiative. Giving the National Guard of Ukraine the powers of an intelligence agency in peacetime seems impractical, and the key to effective intelligence support during this period is to improve interaction with intelligence agencies and ways to exchange intelligence information.

Forty Years of Soviet Spying in NATO: A Preliminary Study

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)’s security against Soviet espionage was devastating. Open sources reveal more than 60 spies unmasked, named, and accused of directly stealing NATO secrets on behalf of Soviet intelligence services, the State Committee for Security (KGB) and Main Intelligence Directorate, while NATO’s own secret report estimated 300 spies. These unmaskings attested to the efficacy of Western counterintelligence, but nevertheless evidenced deep and sustained infiltration by Soviet agents. This study, unfortunately, may only be considered preliminary because it is the first one to examine the totality of espionage within NATO during the Soviet years, even though the complete historical record remains inaccessible. Second, most of the information has been gleaned from journalistic sources. Third, the real damage of stolen classified materials remains elusive owing to laws that prevent disclosure. Absent a practical way to verify compromises, NATO officials had little recourse but to assume that Moscow possessed all classified information exposed to spies.

EVALUASI KINERJA STRUKTUR BANGUNAN GEDUNG TAHAN GEMPA DENGAN METODE ANALISIS RESPONS SPEKTRUM DAN TIME HISTORY

The city of Bandung is one of the cities that is prone to earthquakes because it is passed by the Lembang fault. Therefore, buildings in the city of Bandung should have implemented the concept of earthquake-resistant buildings in their construction. To avoid the occurrence of damage or collapse of the structure of the building against an earthquake, it is necessary to analyze the building against the earthquake. This study aims to determine how many deviations occur in the building due to the earthquake and the performance of the building structure. The method used is the response spectrum and time history analysis method and then evaluates the performance of the structure against earthquakes using the ATC-40 standard. The building that is the case study is the Directorate of Drugs and the Directorate of Intelligence and Security for the West Java Police, which consists of 5 floors. Structural modeling and analysis were performed using ETABS v20. Earthquake records used are Imperial Valley, Kobe and Trinidad earthquakes. Based on the results of the analysis of the maximum deviation with the response spectrum method 26.74 mm in the X direction and 26.46 mm in the Y direction. Meanwhile, for the time history analysis, it was obtained 33.05 mm in the X direction and 28.96 in the Y direction. The maximum value of the total deviation obtained 0.0016 m and the maximum value of inelastic deviation obtained 0.0014 m so that it shows the level of performance of this building structure based on ATC-40 is Immediate Occupancy (IO), which means the structure is in a safe condition.Keywords : ATC-40, earthquake resistant buildings, spectrum response, time history,

Introduction. The article considers the problem of the soviet tankers participation in the Spanish Civil War in its initial period. Methods and materials. The study is based on documents of the Intelligence Directorate of the People’s Commissariat of Defence of the Soviet Union. They became available after the publication of the first three volumes of the eight serial edition “Red Army and the Spanish Civil War (1936– 1939)”. Analysis. It is emphasized that the first group of Soviet tankers arrived in Spain on October 13, 1936, together with a batch of T-26 tanks (50 in total). On October 29, a tank company, which in a short time prepared the missing crew members from among the Spaniards, took part in a combat offensive operation in the Madrid area. According to documentary evidence the effectiveness of the combat use of tanks was minimal and was a result of the unwillingness and inability of the Spanish infantry, including its command staff, to act together with tanks. The documents characterize the T-26 tank as a reliable, hardy, easy-to-handle vehicle, superior in all technical characteristics to light tanks of German and Italian production, but with unsuccessful turret geometry, with weak armor, with an imperfect design of the turret swivel mechanism, with an unusable radio antenna. The article considers presented in the documents problem of the moral, political, psychological and physical condition of soviet tankers in Spain. The documentation also notes high level of military discipline, gives examples of heroic deeds of tankers, primarily members of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks). At the same time attention is drawn to cases of excessive caution of individual commanders bordering on cowardice. An important place in the documents is given to the physical condition of tankers who find themselves in unfamiliar climatic and social conditions as well as in terms of a completely different food ration. It is noted that almost 100% overwork of personnel associated with continuous participation in hostilities, accompanied by various diseases. Results. The article emphasizes the importance of the direct participation of Soviet tankers in the hostilities of 1936–1937. It made it possible to prevent the military defeat of the Spanish Republic at the stage of creating a regular People’s Army. If You Want War, Prepare for Peace: The Role of Peace in Clausewitz’s On War

The military is one of the largest and most centralized organizations in most countries. Since the early days of the State of Israel, the military echelon has assumed broad responsibility that goes beyond what is customary in democratic countries. The Intelligence Directorate and the Planning Division enjoyed the status of almostexclusive sources of national intelligence assessments and political-security planning, respectively. The purpose of this article is to examine and describe the extent of the military echelon’s influence on the political echelon, with emphasis on political-strategic planning and national intelligence assessments. The article discusses the influence of the military, as a bureaucratic organization, on the political echelon in the decision-making process in the political-security sphere, arguing that decisions on foreign and security issues do not always favor the much more powerful organization. To this end, I will examine the model of bureaucratic-organizational dynamics as manifested in Israel during the First Intifada. The starting point of the bureaucratic-organizational decision-making model developed by Halperin and Ellison is that there is organizational heterogeneity within the government system, and decisions reflect the different interests and strengths of the decision-makers and organizations taking part in the process in a manner that always favors the most powerful.

THE INFLUENCE OF SERVICE QUALITY AND ONLINE SERVICE FACILITY ON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE DITINTELKAM POLDA ACEH AND ITS IMPACT ON SERVICE RECIPIENT COMMUNITY SATISFACTION OF POLICE RECORD CERTIFICATE (SKCK) ISSUANCE

This research aims to test the mediating role of organizational performance on service quality and online service facilities' influence on community satisfaction. The population was all people who have received the issuance of a Police Record Certificate (SKCK) in The Directorate of Security Intelligence for the Aceh Regional Police (Ditintelkam Polda Aceh) in 2021 as much as 4401. The number of samples used was 367 people taken using the Slovin formula. Data were analyzed using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. The result concludes Service Quality influences Organizational Performance, Online Service Facility influences organizational Performance, Service quality influences Community Satisfaction, Online Service Facility influences Community Satisfaction, Organizational Performance influences Community Satisfaction, Service quality influences Community Satisfaction through Organizational Performance, and Online Service Facility influences Community Satisfaction through Organizational Performance. The test also proves that Organizational performance acts as a partial mediator. All of these results reveal that the model of increasing public satisfaction with police services in Indonesia is proven to be a function of improving service quality and online service facilities, so it makes the improvement of police performance in serving. The proof of the model also generates new premises, using previous theories that are combined into a model.

For over 30 years, Lieutenant General Markus Wolff headed the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of State Security of the German Democratic Republic. Today, there is neither that state nor that service, and Wolf died in 2006. However, Wolff is certainly the most impressive figure in the intelligence world, above all in the period from the end of the Second World War to the end of the Cold War, and with his ability and results he established himself as the most capable Cold War head of the intelligence service. However, his fate is a tragic one, Wolff perished in the vortex of complex political-security relations between the East and the West, where the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact were decisive for his personal and professional fate. The article analyzes and sheds light on the causes and impacts of complex social phenomena that trace broader social relations, with an emphasis on how these relations can affect an individual who is in a responsible position. The life story of Marcus Wolff is not only a story about him, about two Germanys, about the Cold War, but also a story that has a much deeper background, it is a story about sacrifice, betrayal and suffering in intelligence world.

El violador es la verdad del grupo: sicopolítica de la violencia sexual en los centros de tortura (Chile, 1974-1976)

Objective/Context: To propose an analytical reading of histories about the political-sexual violence unleashed in torture centers of the secret police (National Intelligence Directorate - dina) during the dictatorship in Chile (especially the period 1974-1976). The analysis unveils the psychosocial mechanisms of sadism that characterized the protagonists of this sexual violence. Methodology: The research is based on the monitoring and discursive analysis of “false” testimonies offered by some known torturers (Osvaldo Romo, Miguel Krassnoff, Ingrid Olderock) and disclosed in printed publications, audiovisual records and judicial documents released between 1990 (at the beginning of the first civilian transitional government) and 2014 (when the first lawsuits for sexual torture were filed). Originality: the article offers a psycho-political interpretation of political-sexual violence, presented as a product of a sadistic prostituting institution. It shows how this institution was operated by torturers whose “truth” was that of the perverse social and sexual contract of the dictatorship: a truth that also emerged regarding the “pact of silence” and denialism concealment in the mismatches implicit in their discourses. Conclusions: The analysis allows us to conclude that the socio-sexual contract of the dictatorship needed to foster, capture and feed on the sadism of the subjects hired as secret agents. It also shows how this contract normalized the sadistic apathos and the sexualized cruelty unleashed in spaces of exception (the clandestine detention and torture centers), from which the “normality” outside those spaces was imposed and reinforced as a project of authoritarian patriarchal domination.

MATBUAT VE İSTİHBARAT MÜDÜRİYET-İ UMUMİYESİ GENEL MÜDÜRLERİ (1920-1931)

General Directorate of Press and Intelligence is an organization that played an important role in the victory of the Turkish National Struggle. The Directorate is one of the organizations that made an important contribution to the Turkish National Struggle in terms of intelligence, both with propaganda and other intelligence activities other than propaganda. In this study, individuals who served as General Directors in the General Directorate of Press and Intelligence from June 7, 1920, the date of its establishment, until June 1, 1931, the date of its abolition, are examined. The study is based on the hypothesis that the General Directors who have a decisive role in the execution of institutional activities, made significant contributions to increasing the institutional performance of the Directorate between 1920-1931 and these contributions naturally had positive reflections on the Turkish National Struggle. While testing this hypothesis, archive documents determined as a result of scanning Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye Directorate of State Archives, Minutes of The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, memoirs, primary and secondary sources within the scope of the subject are used. As a result of the holistic evaluation of the sources, which are handled in accordance with the historical research method, it has been determined that the General Directors including Hamdullah Suphi Tanrıöver, Muhittin Birgen, Ahmed Ağaoğlu and Zekeriya Sertel who have experience in the field of press, had made a significant contribution to the development of Directorate’s institutional capability and performance. Thanks to this contribution of the General Directors, it is seen that the intelligence and propaganda activities in the Turkish National Struggle could be carried out in a healthy way with an institutional understanding and within a certain program.

Six years later, my older brother was in Iraq with the Army as part of the surge, and I signed up for Army ROTC the next year—I eventually became an infantry officer with the Virginia National Guard. While I was in training, I read books about our current wars: Lone Survivor and House to House stand out in my memory. The main thing that I remember is the intensely personal detail about fellow soldiers, down to their hobbies and quirks, and the relative facelessness of those they ran across in the course of their missions, whether combatant or noncombatant or in that murky area between. When I first read Frankenstein in Baghdad a few years ago, it was a revelation: here were the faces of the Iraqi people who lived through a war that went on around them and sometimes cut through them, punctuating their lives with the uncertainty of bullets and suicide bombers and vehicle-borne IEDs. Part magical realism, part war story, part political intrigue, part neighborhood drama, Ahmed Saadawi's Frankenstein in Baghdad is set in the cracked-windowed suburbs of Iraq's capital in 2005. It revolves around an aspiring journalist, an Assyrian Orthodox widow with her ikon of St. George, an arak-drinking junkman, and the corpse the junkman stitches together from the unburied body parts of IED victims. Winner of the 2014 International Prize for Arabic Fiction, with the English translation shortlisted for the 2018 Man Booker Prize, Frankenstein in Baghdad is an eviscerating look at America's most recent wars through the eyes of those who lived through them as bystanders. [End Page 27] The book opens with a bang. Starting off with an IED may be initially shocking to the reader, but two hundred yards from the exploding bomb, a widow continues on her way to prayer at the Orthodox church and doesn't notice. Similar scenes throughout the book display the randomness of violence in a war zone and how it is absorbed into daily life. This, in turn, contributes to a pervadingly dark humor both among the characters and in the narration. The cordons are inept at catching a monster terrorizing the neighborhood, and the intelligence directorate attempting to catch the monster relies on astrologers for its assessments. Faces and their transformation are crucial to the book. Elishva, the Orthodox widow, is in nearly constant conversation and negotiation with her ikon of St. George the Martyr and his "angelic face" for the return of her son, lost in the Iran-Iraq War two decades before. When she believes she has finally received her wish, she cuts the face out of the portrait. Hadi, the junkman who stitches together the pieces of IED victims because the police will only bury complete bodies, creates a monster—and is later shocked when his own face is burned and turned into a grotesque. Meanwhile, when the monster begins his forays for vengeance, he is only known as having a deformed face. At one point, a cordon is formed around the neighborhood by the Iraqi and US militaries, and Mahmoud, the journalist, realizes that "what … all [the detainees] had in common … was that they were ugly. Some had genetic defects, others had been disfigured by burns, and others seemed to be insane." When one of the astrologers encounters the Whatsitsname, he asks to see his face. The monster responds, "What's the point of that? It changes. I don't have a permanent face." But the astrologer's wish is granted, and he believes "it was the face of his own personal past, which he had thought had no face or features." What he realizes, with the brutality of an axe blow, is that even those who are trying to solve...

Soviet Espionage in France during the Cold War: An Overview

During the Cold War, France remained a soft touch for Soviet intelligence. Among the large communist population—war veterans and about 25% of the postwar electorate—Soviets found fertile ground for recruiting agents and collaborators who would betray their country, although it is fair to say most philosophical and political communists did not engage in espionage. Spy rings led by the State Committee for Security (KGB) and Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU) controllers in the Russian embassy’s rezidence overwhelmed French security precautions. In addition, the Soviet espionage apparatus maintained an extensive infrastructure in the Moscow Center that supported quantitative intelligence collected in France on a massive scale. The addition of agents from satellite countries stretched French counterintelligence beyond its limits. All this is not to say that French security was completely ineffective. Security agencies unmasked spies and arrested hundreds for espionage; so too, hundreds of Soviets with diplomatic immunity were expelled. French security also benefited from consequential defections of Soviet agents and the crowning but fortuitous achievement of a mole inside the KGB itself. But poor French security exacerbated deteriorating relations with the United States and compromised North Atlantic Treaty Organization secrets. Regardless of the détente between East and West, Soviet espionage continued unabated.

Traditionally, security issues in Colombia have been operated by military institutions with a high percentage of male participation. Since the creation of the National Intelligence Directorate (NID) in 2011, this masculinized and militarized environment of security issues has been transformed by the creation of a civilian institution with 45.7% female participation in highly recognized profiles. The participation of women in the institution has exposed socioemotional skills that characterize their strategic role at the NID. To research how gender distinction in socioemotional skills influences intelligence processes within the NID, eight semistructured interviews were conducted with seven women and one man, and a specialized literature review on the building of socioemotional skills distinction by gender was carried out. There were three main results: first, the NID has gender parity because, being a civilian agency, it clashes with a masculinized tradition of other military-based national intelligence agencies; second, the representative participation of women in strategic roles within the NID demonstrates that their socioemotional skills are a useful resource for intelligence activity; third, on the one hand, the overexploitation of socioemotional skills and “smart intelligence” leads to overburdening women in their tasks and responsibilities on both professional and personal levels, but on the other hand, it is harder for women to show results and be recognized for their work in the Colombian Intelligence Community.
