Considerations of quality: examining theoretical perspectives informing infant and toddler pedagogy in Aotearoa/New Zealand

ABSTRACT With the growing participation of infants and toddlers in group care settings ongoing examination and research into what constitutes quality education and care for this age group is paramount. Theories and approaches espoused in Aotearoa/New Zealand’s mandated early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki: He whāriki mātauranga mo ngā mokopuna o Aotearoa. Early childhood curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2017) were examined to ascertain how they could inform quality pedagogy and practice with infants and toddlers. The research used an integrative literature review methodology to investigate the theoretical underpinnings of this curriculum and how these aligned to quality pedagogy for infants and toddlers. Evidence emerging from the research found many similarities between the pedagogical practices related to each theory and alignment with quality experiences for infants and toddlers. Moving forward it is suggested that an increased depth of knowledge of theories and their relationship to pedagogy for infants and toddlers would enhance teaching practice. The review also recommends that further research should be undertaken into how kaiako conceptualise and enact educational theory in infant and toddler ECEC settings.

Clinical and Economic Value of a Biosimilar Portfolio to Stakeholders: An Integrative Literature Review.

While the value of individual biosimilars is evident, little is known about the value of a biosimilar portfolio beyond the cost savings between biosimilars and originators. Stakeholders may consider the value of a manufacturer's biosimilar portfolio, especially when negotiating portfolio-based contracts or other rebate programs. However, little is known about what other types of value, in addition to financial benefits, decision-makers perceive regarding a manufacturer with a biosimilar portfolio compared to those without one. The objective of this integrative literature review was to describe a conceptual framework consisting of themes that may help define the value of a biosimilar portfolio. An integrative literature review was conducted using Excerpta Medica Database (Embase) and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE). Grey literature searches of search engines, journals not indexed in Embase or MEDLINE, healthcare payers, health technology assessment bodies, value frameworks, and non-pharmaceutical industry analogs were also conducted. Eligible studies reported on the value of a biosimilar portfolio in decision-making by stakeholders. Apart from the literature, insights were gained from clinical experience and observation. No studies investigating biosimilar portfolio value were identified; however, several themes were identified that may help define the value of a biosimilar portfolio: Manufacturing; procurement, inventory, and storage; administration; education; and transaction costs. Several non-pharmaceutical industry analogs were identified: Product line length and single-supplier versus multiple-supplier procurement. Several themes were identified through other sources: Science credibility and research. Based on these themes, we developed a conceptual framework for biosimilar portfolio value. To our knowledge, this is the first study to systematically assess and create a framework for biosimilar portfolio value. The conceptual framework described here could be tested to quantify the clinical and economic value associated with a biosimilar portfolio.

Early Childhood Educators' Knowledge of Language Development: An Integrative Literature Review

Abstract Background: The aim of this paper is to identify the scientific production on the knowledge of early childhood educators regarding language development and their pedagogical practices in Brazil, considering the educators’ perceptions. Objectives: This review aims to identify relevant literature and synthesize existing research on the topic of early childhood educators' knowledge of language development. Methods: For this purpose, the following databases were searched: LILACS, SciElo and ERIC, using the following keywords: language development, language acquisition, oral language, children's language, early childhood education and preschool teachers. The inclusion criteria for the review were scientific articles published in English and/or Portuguese, studies with early childhood education teachers /educators as participants, published between 2012 and February 2022, qualitative and/or quantitative studies, and articles published as full text and open access. Results: The low production found may reflect the need for more publications on this topic, especially in the Portuguese context. It was concluded that the knowledge acquired by teachers during their training paths has a reciprocal impact on the beliefs and practices presented by these professionals in the context of early childhood education intervention. Conclusion: After identifying the published works, this research proved to be relevant and convergent with current conceptions regarding the importance of the link between the knowledge of language acquisition and development acquired by early childhood educators and their practices in school contexts on a daily basis. MULTISENSORY METHODS AS TEACHERS' EFFORTS IN DEALING WITH DYSLEXIC CHILDREN IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: LITERATURE REVIEW

Dyslexic children of primary school age feel unable to keep up with learning, because they have different ways to learn. Teachers in school need to strategize a method for dyslexic children can follow the lesson well. This study aims to determine the efforts of teachers in dealing the dyslexic children with multisensory methods in elementary school. The research method used is integrative literature review with a five-stage framework, namely problem identification, literature search, data evaluation, data analysis, and presentation of findings. The electronic databases used are Sinta, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, Garuda, and Rama Repository, producing amount 38,649 articles over the past 10 years. Using search keywords, 7 journals were identified as meeting the inclusion criteria using the CASP (Critical Appraisal Skill Program) instrument. The result of this literature review is that multisensory methods are proven to improve the reading ability and learning quality of dyslexic children. Children experience an improvement in their ability to recognize words accurately although not significantly. Teachers need to provide remedial to overcome the difficulties and learning barriers they experience at school, and discuss with parents in order to children get a balanced teaching method between home and school.

Epoxy resin-based root canal sealers: An integrative literature review.

The correct obturation of the root canal system achieved by means of a core and a cement is essential for the success of endodontic treatment. There are several root canal cements (RCCs) on the market; however, because of their excellent characteristics, epoxy resin-based sealers (ERBSs) have been widely used. The main aim of this review was to analyze and integrate the available information on different ERBSs. An electronic search was performed in the PubMed and Scopus databases, using "epoxy resin" AND "root canal treatment", and "epoxy resin" AND "endodontics" as search terms. In general, ERBSs have good flow properties, film thickness, solubility, dimensional stability, sealing capacity, and radiopacity. They are also able to adhere to dentin while exhibiting low toxicity and some antibacterial effects. However, their main disadvantage is the lack of bioactivity and biomineralization capability. A large number of ERBSs are available on the market, and AH Plus keeps being the gold standard RCC. Yet, information on many of them is limited or non-existent, which could be due to the fact that some of them are relatively new. The latter emphasizes the need for relevant research on the physicochemical and biological properties of some ERBSs, with the aim of supporting their clinical use with sufficient evidence via prospective and long-term studies.

Strategies to attract school-leavers to nurse education programmes: an integrative literature review.

The shortfall of nurses in the UK has led to concerns that there are insufficient staff to ensure safe and high-quality care. To address this shortfall, one group to focus on for recruiting nursing students is school-leavers. This article reports on an integrative literature review that was conducted to explore the educational strategies used to attract school-leavers to undergraduate nurse education programmes. The review identified that a variety of educational strategies were used, and all of the included studies reported positive effects on school pupils' intention to undertake nursing studies. These strategies often included interactions with nursing staff and/or nursing students, as well as observing and practising clinical skills, for example via simulation. However, most participants likely had a pre-existing interest in healthcare or nursing, the interventions were delivered predominantly to young women, and the included studies lacked longer-term follow-up. This highlights a need to conduct further research to assess the longitudinal impact of recruitment strategies aimed at broader audiences.

Optimizing the co-benefits of biodiversity and carbon sinks in urban residential yards

Urban green infrastructure is recognized for its potential to combat biodiversity loss and enhance carbon sequestration in cities. While residential yards constitute a significant part of urban green infrastructure, their role in providing urban ecosystem services remains largely understated. There is a lack of systematic measures for effectively implementing urban vegetation to enhance ecosystem services. The aim of this study is to investigate how different vegetation types typically found in urban residential yards of apartment blocks can enhance carbon sequestration and biodiversity, and how these benefits can be supported through landscape design. The study encompasses an integrative literature review and qualitative analysis. Drawing from a review of previous research, this study identifies the drivers that indicate either carbon sink potential or biodiversity enhancement potential of urban vegetation types. The drivers are then cross-examined to identify the qualities of urban green that potentially strengthen carbon–biodiversity co-benefits. As the key findings we present versatile measures to enhance the potential co-benefits of carbon sinks and biodiversity within urban yards and summarize them in three main categories: plant diversity, provision of good growing conditions and maintenance. The study stresses that the several potential co-benefits of urban green can only be achieved through the selection and prioritization of solutions during the planning and design process. To exemplify this, we demonstrate how the findings from the literature review can be incorporated into the design and management of urban yards. We conclude that the main actions to be addressed in the future planning and design of urban residential yards are (i) establishing diverse planting areas with a mixture of woody and herbaceous plants to encourage species richness and complexity, (ii) optimizing the use of space and growth conditions, and, (iii) implementing maintenance practices that consider both carbon and biodiversity aspects. The study highlights that through enhancing carbon-biodiversity co-benefits urban yards can significantly contribute to major environmental challenges and provide vital ecosystem services within the built urban environments.

Potencial terapêutico de fitoconstituintes de Pilocarpus microphyllus Stapf ex Wardlew. e da própolis na doença de Alzheimer: uma Revisão Integrativa

Introduction: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the deterioration of cognitive functions, for which the available pharmacotherapy is not capable of effecting a cure. Objectives: To investigate the neuroprotective properties of phytoconstituents from Jaborandi (Pilocarpus microphyllus) and propolis as potential agents in the therapy of AD. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review study, in which the PICO strategy was followed in formulating the guiding question. Five databases were used: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Lilacs. The analysis was conducted with the descriptors "epiisopiloturine", "episopilosin", "pilocarpine", "macaubine", "propolis", "alzheimer" extracted from the DeCS (Health Sciences Descriptors) and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). Keywords were isolated and combined using boolean operators AND and OR. Results: The search resulted in 602 studies identified in the databases, 337 were duplicates, leaving 265 for title and abstract reading, of which 250 were excluded. In the end, 10 studies were read in full and 08 studies were included in the scope of the review. The research evidenced neuroprotective activity for propolis, through antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticholinesterase action, configuring it with therapeutic potential in AD. For pilocarpine, a substance with various clinical applications, few studies demonstrated a correlation with AD, in cognitive and behavioral improvement. Conclusion: Therefore, benefits for the use of propolis in cognitive dysfunctions are concluded, while for pilocarpine, this relationship was not established. It is necessary to develop research that elucidates the possible functional roles for these substances.

The Potential Social Impact of COVID-19 Lockdowns on Agricultural Households in South Africa: An Integrative Review

This article attempts to establish a synergy between two strands of literature. On the one hand, the findings focused on the elderly, who had already been suffering from mild illnesses and comorbidities, and the poor and rural dwellers, who then represented the population groups most likely to be killed by the virus, as the population groups most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. On the other hand, the findings on smallholder farming households, as a population group, share the same attributes as the elderly group. The research data was gathered through an integrative literature review using secondary sources from Statistics South Africa and the Department of Health. Our findings suggest that the smallholder farmers who are elderly with a greater reliance on agriculture and the wage labourers were most vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19. Although our findings suggest a likely impact on all the pentagon capitals of smallholders identified through the SLF lens, the odds are higher in the social, human, and financial capitals. Therefore, in future outbreaks, the available support should prioritise the smallholder farmers largely defined by these capitals.

Technological innovation for workload allocation in nursing care management: an integrative review

Background Technology reduces the nursing workload, improve the quality care processes, patient’s safety, and avoid staff burnout. Innovative technologies are disrupting healthcare systems by improving the efficiency of processes and management. There is a discussion on the benefits, challenges, and barriers of these technologies and considering human factors of nursing management. The aim was to analyze the influence of technologies on the distribution of workload for nursing care management. Methods An integrative literature review was performed. Four databases were searched: Scopus, Scielo, PUBMED, and CINALH following PRISMA guidelines. Articles published from January 2016 to December 2020, published in English, Spanish and Portuguese were included. Studies were excluded when they were not original research, did not met the quality criteria or they did not answer the research questions. Quality appraisal was performed using the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool version 1.4 (CCAT). Two reviewers independently examined the title and abstract for eligibility according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results 2818 potentially relevant articles were found, but once the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the abstracts were analyzed, 177 remained for evaluation. After following the PRISMA Guidelines, 35 studies were included in the review. Three categories were identified: Nursing workload; Information technologies and technological means for management; Technology acceptance. Conclusions Technology has the potential to improve care management by estimating nurse workload in ICUs and non-critical units, but scientific evidence is more detailed in the former type of services. The literature provides insights about the factors that factors and the barriers that promote the technology acceptance and usability. We did not find studies comparing technologies and no scientific evidence proving improvements in care.

The research study contribution spans over multiple categories of Robot vision and is tinted along with technical limitations and future research endeavors. Previously multiple research studies have been observed to leverage Robotic vision techniques. Yet, there is none like SLR summarizing recent vision techniques for all targeted Robotic fields. This research SLR could be a precious milestone in Robot vision for each glimpse of Robotics.

Surgical Apgar Score in Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery and Liver Transplantation — An Integrative Review

The Apgar score was created to assess newborns’ risk of death and complications. The surgical Apgar score (SAS) was created to adapt this index to determine mortality and postsurgical morbidity. This scale ranges from 0 to 10, with the highest value corresponding to the patient with the lowest risk. Its use may be more widely disseminated to avoid and evaluate possible postoperative complications in specific surgeries. Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the SAS and its implication in postsurgical risk assessment in patients undergoing hepatobiliopancreatic surgery and hepatic transplantation. Methods: Integrative literature review developed through searches in the PubMed database. To compose this review, six articles were selected after analyzing and applying the criteria defined by the authors. Results: The use of the SAS has good statistical evidence as a scale for assessing the risk of complications and death in the postoperative period of hepatobiliopancreatic surgeries and hepatic transplantation. In addition to proving valuable and efficient in pancreatic surgeries, the SAS was also considered helpful in indicating complications after hepatic surgery and hepatic transplantation. Conclusion: The SAS can be clinically useful to guide decisions on rapid post-transplant and perioperative risk screening for general surgeries or the allocation of intensive care, given that it proves to be efficient as a strategy that can predict the chance of morbidity and mortality of a particular patient who underwent surgery.

Rethinking cluster under coopetition strategy: an integrative literature review and research agenda

AbstractThis study aimed to integrate the dimensions and elements of intra-cluster coopetition, identify the emergence of a complementary theoretical perspective to cluster theory and create an integrative research agenda to support the rethinking cluster approach based on coopetition. It is an integrative Systematic Literature Review that generates insights to move the topic forward. Results showed coopetition as context, process, or outcome. The research focus was grouped into six dimensions of intra-cluster coopetition: Strategic Adjustment, Perceived Benefits, Mediated Coopetition, Social Interaction, Coopetitive Orientation, and Temporality of Coopetition. Four hundred eighty-six elements used by scholars created a second-order coding to represent the variables of coopetition in clusters. From the integrative literature overview, a theoretical framework emerges with four dimensions: Conditional factors, Policies, Market commonality, and Formal supporting structure. These dimensions act as drivers, markets, or intensifiers of the intra-cluster coopetition strategy. At the same time, the dimensions suffer the influence of external, internal, and ecosystem contexts. Our literature review builds theory to advance cluster coopetition research and complement the Porterian perspective. The framework suggests the main elements to manage clusters under the coopetition strategy. These findings rethink cluster theory and deliver the business co-evolution perspective, considering the cluster as a business ecosystem with an open system based on coopetition. Findings offer an inductive-deductive pattern system to further research that represents the evolutionary trend of the topic itself.

Sustaining Family Businesses through Business Incubation: An Africa-Focused Review

The influence of business incubation systems on family businesses in African economies has not been thoroughly investigated despite the potential contribution of family businesses to Africa’s economic expansion and the attainment of development goals outlined in the Africa Development Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals. Therefore, this study investigates the potential benefits that family businesses in Africa can derive from engaging in business incubation. This study utilised an integrative literature review methodology to investigate the research question. Twenty-three peer-reviewed articles were systematically selected from the Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases using the following combination of phrases: “family business” and either “business incubation” or “business incubator”. The findings suggest ways to create a mutually beneficial relationship between family businesses and business incubators to improve long-term sustainability, promote collaboration, facilitate knowledge transfer, and foster an entrepreneurial ecosystem. It also recognises challenges, such as cultural alignment in family businesses. Business incubators in Africa can improve the sustainability of family businesses, such as during the succession, by offering support, resources, and guidance. The South African experience is a role model for the rest of the continent, in this regard. Future research should broaden the sources beyond the three databases utilised, including non-peer-reviewed sources such as grey literature, and extend the focus beyond developing economies.

The Importance of Reconstituting the Bodies of Organ and Tissue Donors: a Look at Human Dignity

Introduction: Family refusal to authorize the donation of human organs and tissues has remained high over the years. Among the many reasons for not donating, we highlight the lack of information about the process and the family’s lack of knowledge about the donor’s wishes in life, as well as other issues, such as the appearance of the donor’s body after donation. In this sense, it is necessary to bring to light the aspects that permeate the concepts of death, human dignity, and care for the donor’s image, especially in the case of tissue donors, where the removal may be more noticeable. Objectives: An integrative literature review (ILR) was carried out, seeking to highlight gaps and characterize the process of donating human organs and tissues, with a focus on the reconstruction of the donor’s body and human dignity. In addition, the aim was to describe the experience of a professional from a human tissue bank (BTH). Methods: Using the PICO strategy, the study’s guiding question was drawn up following an IR carried out over the last 10 years, operationalized by controlled descriptors in the SciELO, LILACS, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases. In addition to the search, an experience report was described on the techniques used to reconstruct the donor’s body after the tissues used by a BTH located in the interior of the state of São Paulo were harvested. Results: Nine specific studies were found on donation and the use of prostheses to reconstruct donated areas. The results show the reasons for family refusal, as well as the care taken by the technical teams in reconstructing donors’ bodies. The family’s concern about the donor’s aesthetic situation influences acceptance for donation, so it is necessary to invest in the safety and quality of the services provided by BTH to reduce family refusal for donation. Conclusion: Clear communication and the safety of the processes involved in the procurement of human organs and tissues proved to be the best way to facilitate donation and could thus increase donations.

Organizational unlearning as a process: What we know, what we don’t know, what we should know

AbstractAlthough the field of organizational unlearning has recently gained increased interest, its conceptual foundations and raison d’être are still debated. In this review, we aim to revisit various discourses and arguments to advance the understanding of organizational unlearning in management and organization studies. Using an integrative literature review approach with systematic elements, we examine the existing body of research on organizational unlearning. We review the literature from different perspectives, focusing on a process-based understanding in terms of why and how organizations intentionally discard knowledge. Based on our review, we develop an integrative framework that portrays organizational unlearning as a dynamically unfolding process over time. We propose implications and offer research directions that will allow future researchers to develop a more profound understanding of the concept.

Evidence-based recommendations for delivering the diagnosis of X & Y chromosome multisomies in children, adolescents, and young adults: an integrative review

BackgroundThe diagnosis of supernumerary X & Y chromosome variations has increased following the implementation of genetic testing in pediatric practice. Empirical evidence suggests that the delivery of the diagnosis has a lasting impact on how affected individuals and their parents perceive and adapt to the diagnosis. The purpose of this review is to synthesize the literature to obtain useful recommendations for delivering a pediatric diagnosis of a sex chromosome multisomy (SCM) based upon a growing body of quantitative and qualitative literature on patient experiences.MethodsWe conducted an integrative literature review using PubMed, Web of Science and CINAHL employing keywords “genetic diagnosis delivery,” “genetic diagnosis disclosure,” “sex chromosome aneuploidy,” “Klinefelter syndrome” or “”47, XXY,” “Jacob syndrome” or “47, XYY,” “Trisomy X,” “Triple X” or “47, XXX,” and “48 XXYY from January 1, 2000, to October 31, 2023.ResultsLiterature supports that patients and parents value the provision of up-to-date information and connection with supportive resources. Discussion of next steps of care, including relevant referrals, prevents perceptions of provider abandonment and commitment to ongoing support. Proactively addressing special concerns such as disclosing the diagnosis to their child, family, and community is also beneficial. Tables are provided for useful information resources, medical specialties that may be required to support patients, and common misconceptions that interfere with accurate information about the diagnosis.ConclusionPatient experiences suggest there should be heightened attention to diagnosis delivery, in reference to the broader ethical and social impacts of a SCM diagnosis. We present recommendations for optimal disclosure of a SCM diagnosis in early and late childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.
