Strengthening Teacher Agency: Supporting the Orchestration of Ethical Dilemmas With EthicApp

Developing ethical reasoning as a competence is gaining relevance in higher education settings influenced by the current demands of society. One approach to achieve this competence is to propose realistic ethical dilemmas to the students. Nevertheless, educators need help in integrating ethics education effectively in higher education due to curricular constraints and a lack of supportive structures. EthicApp is a social platform that aims to support teachers in designing and enacting learning scenarios to foster ethical reasoning. However, the introduction of a new tool such as EthicApp may have undesired consequences for teachers’ agency. The notion of teacher agency is complex and not sufficiently studied in Technology Enhanced Learning contexts. For this reason, we propose to study the implications of the use of EthicApp for teacher agency in the light of the metaphor of orchestration. The metaphor of orchestration in TEL offers a holistic approach to studying how teachers integrate technologies into their practice. This paper presents preliminary findings from a case study in which three higher education teachers orchestrated learning designs supported by EthicApp. Early findings indicate that, although managing the learning scenarios in real-time was perceived as demanding, EthicApp empowered the participant teachers to design innovative learning scenarios, raise awareness, and inform the adaptation of the learning scenarios.

Assessing and Enhancing Core Competencies in Vocational Education: A Case Study of Senior Students at Guangxi Police College, China

This study evaluates the core competencies of senior students at Guangxi Police College within the framework of higher vocational education and provides guidelines for enhancing these skills. A Likert 5-Point Scale questionnaire based on Lin Chongde’s 2017 framework assessed these competencies among 155 students. A statistical study of the data, concentrating on mean values and standard deviations, indicated variable levels of competence across six dimensions: moral awareness, social responsibility, cultural comprehension, critical thinking, language competency, and aesthetic appreciation. They demonstrated high levels of ethical awareness, social responsibility, cultural understanding, critical thinking, and aesthetic appreciation, while language abilities were graded as medium, indicating a need for targeted improvement. Recommendations include incorporating interactive language activities and industry-specific training, targeting critical thinking through case studies and debate clubs, broadening cultural understanding through international exposure, cultivating aesthetic appreciation through art classes, and increasing social responsibility through community service and internships. Integrating ethics education across all disciplines and practical ethical dilemma workshops were suggested to promote moral awareness. This study presents a complete examination of basic abilities in a vocational environment and offers actionable suggestions for educational improvement. This paper addresses the critical gap in creating vocational training programs for police officers. It focuses on police students' vocational education and provides a detailed assessment of fundamental abilities adapted for law enforcement training. The study findings give an insightful overview of the viable future revisions in vocational programs that match the educational requirements and practical demands of the police profession.

Fostering Ethical Behavior in Omani Undergraduates: The Role of Self-Transcendence and Ethics Education

A student should understand and uphold the greatest moral and ethical standards in their community and society through education. The student will eventually intuitively acquire these moral and ethical principles from schools and universities. This research explores the impact of four personal values (openness to change, self-transcendence, conservation, and self-enhancement) on the ethical behavior of undergraduate students in Oman. The study used a quantitative methodology, analyzing data from a questionnaire using descriptive statistics. Data was submitted by Omani university students in the Ad Dakhlia region of Oman. One hundred seventy-nine undergraduate students were chosen using simple random techniques. Partial least squares (PLS) techniques and structural equation modeling were employed in the study to evaluate the research variables. The results showed that ethical training and self-transcendence significantly affect students' moral behavior. However, personal values such as conservation, openness to change, and self-enhancement have no significant effect on students' ethical behavior. Integrating ethics education into curricula could foster integrity. It can be concluded that the significance of moral principles and practical applications-focused ethics education programs—especially those that emphasize self-transcendence—is imperative. Potential outcomes of this research include increased moral behavior among Oman's students through effective moral education and awareness of ethical principles to support moral decision-making in various cultural circumstances. This article makes both theoretical and practical contributions. In particular, support HEIs in developing customized ethics education programs for Oman. Theoretically, highlighting ethical education and principles like self-transcendence helps to understand critical ethical factors and directs future research at this connection.

Fostering Ethics in AI: Perceptions from the Indian AI Curriculum

In the age of rapid Artificial Intelligence (AI) advancement, universities worldwide have responded by offering specialized AI and Machine Learning (ML) courses to meet industry demands. However, amidst this surge in AI education, AI deployment's ethical and societal implications often need more attention. Unlike traditional algorithmic programming, AI involves intricate decision-making processes that are challenging to predict or explain, demanding a comprehensive understanding of its ethical dimensions. Various global initiatives have highlighted the ethical considerations surrounding AI, resulting in an increased emphasis on integrating ethics education into AI curricula. Despite this, there remains a gap in addressing these vital aspects across the broader AI education landscape, with ethics often relegated to the periphery of computer science courses. In this context, this paper explores the imperative for ethics courses in undergraduate AI education in India. We examine educators ' awareness and perceptions regarding ethics education in AI curricula through interactions with faculty members participating in professional development programs and workshops focused on AI pedagogy. Our analysis reveals that there is a pressing need to extend discussions on ethics beyond mere privacy concerns and traditional performance metrics, integrating real-life scenarios into the curriculum. This paper serves as a preliminary step towards a need for a general framework in structuring ethics education in AI in India, aiming to initiate a more comprehensive and standardized approach to AI ethics education, fostering responsible AI development in the future.

Promoting Machine Learning Fairness Education through Active Learning and Reflective Practices

As Natural Language Processing (NLP) has witnessed significant progress in the last decade and language technologies have gained widespread usage, there is an increasing acknowledgement that the choices made by NLP researchers and practitioners regarding data, methods, and tools carry significant ethical and societal implications. Consequently, there arises a pressing need for integrating ethics education into computer science (CS) curriculum, specifically within NLP and other related machine learning (ML) courses. In this project, our primary objective was to highlight the importance of fairness in ML ethics. We aimed to raise awareness regarding biases that can exist in machine learning, such as gender bias and disability bias. Acknowledging the intricate nature of the intersection between machine learning, ethics, and bias, we formed a participatory group comprising professors and students to develop the teaching interventions. The group members have experiences in machine learning, accessible computing, or both. It was crucial to include students in the design process of the teaching interventions because we wanted to ensure that fairness is sufficiently covered without being too complex to understand or too subtle to recognize [Tseng et al., 2022].

Student-instructor relationships and ethics education: examining student perceptions of the integrative ethical education model

The National Communication Association has positioned ethics education as a key student learning outcome for those graduating with a degree in communication. However, as central as this learning outcome is, few studies, within communication and across disciplines investigating teaching/learning, have explored specific instructor behaviors that promote students’ ethical development. This study explores how instructor behaviors are recognized by students as fulfilling the integrative ethical education (IEE) model. A relationally based approach, the tenets of the IEE model propose pedagogical practices that can be implemented in order to promote student learning and ethical development. Conducting a thematic analysis of focus group and interview data, we identified specific instructor communication behaviors students connected to the IEE model. Further, our findings suggest that central to implementing the IEE model are the development of a strong student-instructor relationship and classroom community. Implications for ethics education in communication and future research directions are discussed.

Integrative Ethical Education: An Exploratory Investigation into a Relationally Based Approach to Ethics Education

The purpose of this exploratory study was to investigate the effect of a curricular application of the integrative ethical education (IEE) model and its effect on first-year college students’ ethical development. Using a pretest posttest design, participants’ moral judgment and reasoning were measured before and after they participated in an IEE-based academic course and compared using descriptive analysis. Results revealed that participants’ moral judgment and reasoning increased while participating in the program. These results provide initial support for the use of IEE-based curricula and academic experiences to promote college students’ ethical development. Implications for communication education and future research are discussed.

The Implementation of an Ethical Education Curriculum in Secondary Schools in Ireland

The paper investigates teachers’ and principals’ experiences of implementing a pilot of an ethical education (EE) curriculum to a senior cycle programme in Educate Together secondary schools in Ireland. The development of this curriculum was informed by the Integrative Ethical Education Model (Lapsley and Narvaez, 2004). Thirteen teachers and two school principals were interviewed about their experiences of this curriculum and its impact on school culture and organisation. An implementation science approach informed a thematic analysis of transcripts that interrogated the perspectives of participants, and revealed the systemic factors that included barriers to, and facilitators of, EE curriculum implementation. Interviews were analysed inductively, by exploring participants’ experiences, and deductively, using Narvaez’s framework of ethical skills. Results were presented within the domains of school setting, wider school setting, curriculum characteristics and teacher characteristics, reflecting an implementation science approach. Findings suggest that this curriculum nurtured a positive school climate where students identified as having a greater sense of school belonging as a result of access to this curriculum.

Moral Enhancement, Instrumentalism, and Integrative Ethical Education

AbstractIn this chapter I will discuss some of the arguments presented inUnfit for the Future, where the authors stress the necessity of moral enhancement to prevent a global catastrophe. Persson and Savulescu promote a reductionistic view of moral intuitions suggesting that oxytocin, serotonin, and genetic treatments could save humanity from the perils of contemporary liberalism, weapons of mass destruction, and uncontrolled pollution. I will contend that although we need a moral enhancement it cannot be a brute manipulation of our biology but something where human plasticity is seen as paramount. Following the lesson of Dewey's instrumentalism, I advocate a non-reductionistic, pluralistic view where neuroscientific data may be used to develop a more effective moral pedagogy. In my opinion, this prospect is currently much more feasible (and less risky) than a hypothetical mass psycho-civilisation created using drugs and electrodes.

Integrative ethical education: Narvaez’s project and Xunzi’s insight

In the early 2000s, some scholars suggested integrative ethical education as an approach to reconcile the gap between cognitive-development education, based on rule ethics, and traditional character-ethics education, inspired by character ethics in Western ethical education. Darcia Narvaez also tried to establish a comprehensive and systematic model. Nonetheless, she has indicated four questions that need further research. This paper aims to respond to Narvaez’s project and its questions from the angle of Xunzi’s ritual education. It argues that Xunzi’s thought may provide some insights for Narvaez’s approach. To present this, it begins its discussion with an introduction of the main ideas of Xunzi’s thought. Later, it tries to show the insights from certain notions and elements, such as Junzi, reasoned judgment, of Xunzi’s ritual education for Narvaez’s project of integrative ethical education. Some relevant questions are also discussed.

Morality Play: A Model for Developing Games of Moral Expertise

According to cognitive psychologists, moral decision-making is a dual-process phenomenon involving two types of cognitive processes: explicit reasoning and implicit intuition. Moral development involves training and integrating both types of cognitive processes through a mix of instruction, practice, and reflection. Serious games are an ideal platform for this kind of moral training, as they provide safe spaces for exploring difficult moral problems and practicing the skills necessary to resolve them. In this article, we present Morality Play, a model for the design of serious games for ethical expertise development based on the Integrative Ethical Education framework from moral psychology and the Lens of the Toy model for serious game design.

Pedagogy of Care and Dialogue: A Theoretical Review of Approaches to Moral Education

This paper aims to offer a theoretical review of approaches to moral education and proposes a dialogic and care-based alternative to the conventional moral education approaches. It starts with a review and critique of the two most common approaches to moral education: traditional, moral character education and the cognitive developmental approach. Then, it explores an alternative strategy, Integrative Ethical Education (IEE), which prioritises dialogue and care in education. It is suggested that the IEE approach has the potential to address the issues that contemporary educators face.

Developing Ethical Confidence: The Impact of Action-Oriented Ethics Instruction in an Accounting Curriculum

While there is considerable support for integrating ethics education in accounting curricula, research presents conflicting evidence on how best to incorporate it. A review of accounting ethics scholarship highlights criticisms of the literature, including limited research into actual behavior and a lack of theory. We report the results of a study that is theory based, captures behaviors rather than attitudes, and explores the effect of repeated practice to develop voice efficacy. We examine the impact of two types of ethics instructions. Across four classes in an accounting curriculum, one student cohort participated in traditional ethics instruction, while the other cohort participated in Giving Voice To Values (GVV) instruction. We collected student responses to an ethical challenge and conduct a between-subject analysis. The results reveal consistent unethical behavior in the traditional cohort but not in the GVV cohort, indicating that faculty should consider the use of this pedagogy in accounting ethics education.

A return to virtue ethics: Virtue ethics, cognitive science and character education

Morality in church and society is a burning issue. Church leaders know that the challenges are both formidable and urgent, yet finding solutions is easier said than done. The question this article asks is how can we educate for character? In the past, deontology or rule ethics reigned supreme, virtue ethics, however, gradually made a comeback. Currently virtue ethics is an important part of character education in the United States of America, especially with schools affiliated with churches. Recent insights provided by researchers focusing on cognitive science (working from the vantage point of cognitive and social psychology) have managed to prove the legitimacy of virtue ethics but remind us that virtues must not be drilled into children; moral deliberation and imagination must be fostered in order to cultivate individuals with moral character that will be able to reflect on their own received tradition. I provide an example of such a method of education when I explain Integrative Ethical Education as formulated by Darcia Narvaez.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: This article confirms the validity of virtue ethics but calls for a change in the standard method of character education that exclusively emphasises knowledge of the Bible and strict obedience to the morals that the local community derives from the Bible, to an approach that also encourages teachers to help foster independent thinkers neither lacking in character nor the ability to reflect critically on their own tradition. I do believe that such a change is possible as was recently shown by the implementation of Darcia Narvaez�s Integrative Ethical Education in the United States of America.

Attitudes towards information ethics: a view from Egypt

PurposeThe information technology (IT) related ethical issues will only increase in frequency and complexity with the increasing diffusion of IT in economies and societies. The purpose of this paper is to explore Egyptian students' attitudes towards the information ethics issues of privacy, access, property, and accuracy, and it evaluates the possible impact of a number of personal characteristics on such attitudes.Design/methodology/approachThis research utilized a cross‐sectional sample and data set to test five hypotheses. It adopted an instrument to collect the respondents' background information and assess their attitudes towards the information ethics issues of privacy, property, accuracy, and access. Egyptian business students at Alexandria University were asked to participate in the survey. A total of 305 responses were collected and analyzed.FindingsThe analysis revealed that students are sensitive to the ethicality of information privacy, information accuracy, and information access. However, students are insensitive to the ethicality of property (software) right. In addition, years of education have a main effect on students' attitudes towards property, and gender and age have an interaction effect on students' attitudes towards access.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this research are based on a cross‐sectional data set collected from a sample of business students at a public university. Students, however, may make poor surrogates for business or IT professionals. Future similar research designs that employ large samples from Egyptian working professionals and students in other private and public universities are needed to verify the findings of this research.Practical implicationsThe findings suggest that the investigated university as well as the other similar Egyptian universities should consider integrating ethics education into their curricula. Teaching information ethics, especially from an Islamic perspective, is expected to positively influence students' information ethical attitudes. The enforcement of the existing property right protection laws should also curb software piracy in the Egyptian market.Originality/valueIt is vital to expand the ethical research currently being performed in IT in order to help bridge the gap between behavior and IT. The findings of this research extend the understanding of students' attitudes towards the information ethics issues in Egyptian culture and contribute to the growing body of knowledge on global information ethics.

Preparing Students for an International Career: The Case for Contextualizing and Integrating Ethics Education

A key aim of IFAC (International Federation of Accountants)’s International Education Standard 4 (IES4) is to raise the ethical awareness of candidates preparing for careers as accounting professionals. This paper reports the results of a survey of undergraduate accounting students at an Australian university, and develops an approach for the implementation of IES4 in business schools with culturally diverse student populations. The survey asks students at different stages of their programs about the contribution of tertiary education to their ethical ideas, drawing conclusions based on their culture, year of study, career intentions, age and gender. It then suggests ways of teaching ethics that value and integrate students’ diverse experiences and cultural backgrounds, as well as their existing knowledge. Such initiatives could expand the horizons of students from all cultural backgrounds by increasing their cultural sensitivity and awareness of ethics as an issue of relevance to their professional careers.

The emotional foundations of high moral intelligence

Moral intelligence is grounded in emotion and reason. Neuroscientific and clinical research illustrate how early life co-regulation with caregivers influences emotion, cognition, and moral character. Triune ethics theory (Narvaez, 2008) integrates neuroscientific, evolutionary, and developmental findings to explain differences in moral functioning, identifying security, engagement, and imagination ethics that can be dispositionally fostered by experience during sensitive periods, but also situationally triggered. Mature moral functioning relies on the integration of emotion, intuition, and reasoning, which come together in adaptive ethical expertise. Moral expertise can be cultivated in organizations using the integrative ethical education model.
