The automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) in Lied Library

The process of bringing Lied Library’s automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) online consisted of setting up the system and storing materials. Setting up the system required defining specifications, designing a user‐interface between the integrated online library system and the ASRS, training in operation, and preparing for maintenance. Storing materials required selecting and processing the items to be stored, loading them into bins, and retrieving them with the system. Library staff spent countless hours in planning, customizing, preparing data, supplementing existing data, testing, and learning the system. The time was well spent as the load process went smoothly with relatively few problems.

Integrated Online Library Systems 2000

The IOLS 2000: Integrated Online Library Systems conference was held in conjunction with the National Online Meeting at the New York Hilton on May 17-18. The conference focused on trends inlibrary automation and the implementation of online resources and services in libraries. This paper offers highlights of the conference and its sessions.

The common user interface in academic libraries: myth or reality?

Academic libraries have long desired one‐stop shopping for their customers and, in this electronic age, their customers are demanding it: a way to search from a single point at any physical location, and retrieve information from the library catalog, citations from journal indexes, and full text information from electronic resources. Academic libraries have explored ways to provide this access, as have library vendors of electronic databases, indexes, and integrated online library systems. The various components for a universal common user interface are in use and available, but have yet to be combined into a single system interface, adaptable enough to include any electronic resource, yet still powerful and versatile enough to provide a powerful and expert search engine. This article discusses the integrated facets as well as the system components that should be built into the ideal electronic library interface, taking into account the information needs of everyone from the newest freshman to the most erudite scholar and their expectations with regard to access, functionality and personalization.

Project LIS: a Web‐based resource of IOLS information

Project URL originated while identifying electronic resources that promote access to information about integrated online library systems (IOLS). Over 40 students, enrolled in a Web‐based asynchronous distance learning graduate level course “Library information systems”, searched the Web for resources that contribute to IOLS. Several hundred sites were initially identified, together with the difficulties associated with such a large set of unorganised pointers to Web‐based resources. A project team was assembled to organise unique URLs as identified by fellow students, adding value and commentary to those sites that met certain criteria of excellence. The product is a metasite of URLs that points to information about IOLS vendors, electronic journal titles and specific e‐journal articles addressing IOLS topics of interest, and general information sources that might be accessed by library professionals involved in decision‐making processes for integrated library systems. Recent efforts have been made to add to this base of IOLS resources. Future revisions are also discussed.

The Carnegie Mellon/Sirsi Corporation Alliance

This article describes the special relationship between Carnegie Mellon University Libraries and Sirsi Corporation, which was forged in tall 1W4. Il discusses the molivalional context in which this relationship emerged, negotiation strategics, and the elements and ongoing activities of the alliance. The University Libraries' expertise in library automation research and development was instrumental in forging the relationship that was a key factor in selecting Sirsi as Carnegie Mellon's integrated library management system vendor. This article discusses the three primary elements of the alliance-research, collaboration, and niarkc-ting-and the benefits of these activities for Sirsi, Carnegie Mellon and other academic customers of Sirsi's integrated online library system. Integrated online software for libraries: An overview of today's best‐selling IOLS. Options from the US perspective

Based on the sales figures reported to Library Journal's annual survey of the library automation marketplace, Ameritech Inc., Geac Computers Inc., Sirsi Corporation, IME Systems Inc. and Innovative Interfaces Inc. dominated the sales of minicomputer‐based integrated online library systems (IOLS) software in 1995. Data Trek, Inmagic, Follett Software Corporation, Winnebago Software Corporation and COMPanion dominated the microcomputer‐based IOLS software sales for the same period.

The acquisitions module: Stepchild of the IOLS

The article questions whether integrated online library systems effectively serve all the needs of libraries and encourage the development of each module to its fullest potential. It suggests that the needs of Acquisitions Departments are not, in most cases, being met, and that a devotion to integration might in the long run be counterproductive.

The Geac ADVANCE system in the House of Lords Library

A brief account of the history of the catalogue in the House of Lords Library is given, followed by a description of progress on catalogue automation 1978–90. An outline of the decision to acquire a multi‐user integrated online library system is provided with an account of the method of selection. The specification and functions of the Geac ADVANCE system, as used in the House of Lords Library, are described in detail, covering the modules for cataloguing, OPAC, acquisitions and serials control.

VTLS to Create Online Catalog for Virginia. The Virginia State Library and Archives in Richmond, which has used the VTLS integrated online library system software since 1983, has contracted with VTLS, Inc., for the CAVALIR ONLINE Database Creation Project. The goal of the project is to create an online union catalog containing holdings of all participating libraries in Virginia.

An integrated online library system as a node in a local area network: The Mitre experience

In the Spring of 1985, the library at the Mitre Corporation in Washington, DC, installed OCLC's LS/2000 integrated library system as a turnkey system on a Data General S‐140 minicomputer housed in the company's computer center. Access to the system was to be via the existing Sytek local area network. This paper is intended to convey the issues the library faced in designing, implementing and offering LS/2000 to users via the LAN. Discussed are LAN issues in general and how each was addressed at Mitre. They include: requirements, equipment, reliability, growth, security and traffic. The installation of the LAN and system interface is addressed next, followed by the benefits accrued by the use of a LAN for an online library system, includ‐ing: a. Convenience of the online public catalog. b. Increased visibility for the library within the organization. c. Further electronic communications with users. d. Shared resources. Finally, the drawbacks of using a LAN are probed, including: a. Distance of the user from library staff. b. Reliability of the LAN. c. Security problems. d. User expectations.

GEAC LOCAL INFORMATION SYSTEM AT HILLINGDON BOROUGH LIBRARIES

Background As described in VINE 48, Hillingdon Libraries issued in September 1982 a 91‐page specification for the supply of an integrated online library system. Though only one page of the specification covered local information, it resulted in a contract with Geac Computers Ltd for the supply of four major software packages: circulation; public access catalogue; acquisitions; and local information.
