Dong Brocade in Hunan, China: Literacy and Re-invention of Tradition in the Perspective of Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection

In this study, we investigated (i) the history, development, and current situation of Dong brocade in the Dong Autonomous County of Passage, Hunan Province, China, from the perspective of the historical development of the Dong ethnic group and (ii) the traditional re-invention of Dong brocade weaving techniques and the re-creation of the traditional educational literacy in the perspective of the intangible cultural heritage protection. This study is qualitative, mainly using the concepts of traditional re-invention and educational literacy, adopting two methods of data collection, namely, documentary research and field survey, and presenting them in the form of descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the Dong people in China have a long history, and Dong brocade is a product of the social life and ecological environment of the local Dong people. With the development of the times and under different social demands, Dong brocade has been recreated in terms of the production process, raw materials, product types, and traditional education, and the literacy of Dong brocade has also been “recreated.” This study explores how to promote the traditional re-creation of Dong brocade from the perspective of intangible cultural heritage protection and how to realize the educational literacy of Dong brocade in various ways with the support of the government, enterprises, and universities. This is of great value to the theoretical study of the living heritage of Dong Brocade and the Chinese government’s promotion of the protection and development of minority cultures.

Study on the Psychological Effects of Intangible Cultural Heritage Advertising with Different Degrees of Situational Involvement.

This review addresses the issues of low consumer engagement and market development difficulties in intangible cultural heritage (ICH) products. Dietary ICH products are selected as research materials to discover contemporary commercial survival paths for ICH through the psychological effects of advertising. Firstly, this study examines the respective advantages of rational and emotional ICH advertisement in terms of emotional responses, cognitive responses, attitudes, recall, and recognition. Then, it explores the effects of different ICH advertisement types (rational advertisement, emotional advertisement) and different degrees of situational involvement (purchasing for oneself, purchasing gifts for others) on the advertising effectiveness, aiming to identify factors influencing the psychological effects of ICH advertisement. Through statistical analysis, the main conclusions are as follows: (1) Rational ICH advertisement prompts consumers to consider the actual attributes of ICH products, leading to a more positive purchasing attitude. (2) Emotional ICH advertisement is more effective in eliciting positive emotions from consumers and enhancing brand memory. (3) Under the scenario of purchasing a gift for others, emotional ICH advertisement has a more positive impact on consumers' attitudes towards advertising. (4) Under different degrees of situational involvement, rational ICH advertisement has a more positive impact on consumers' purchasing attitudes. This study not only provides guidance for optimizing ICH advertising strategies but also offers new directions for market expansion, contributing valuable insights into cultural heritage preservation, as well as the development and protection of ICH.

The heritagization of cultural politics: anthropological research on Chinese cultural heritage

Since the beginning of the twenty-first century, in alignment with globalization and the megatrend within the international socio-cultural sphere, China has initiated a large-scale “intangible cultural heritage (ICH) protection movement” through its proactive leadership and management of cultural heritage administration. As a significant component of Chinese cultural politics, this movement has profoundly influenced the cultural lives of Chinese society and its citizens and is poised to continue doing so. Some Chinese anthropologists have also participated in and significantly contributed to this movement in various ways. This paper comprehensively and meticulously examines these fundamental ways. Building upon this analysis, this paper further provides an overview and assessment of the research outcomes of anthropological research on Chinese cultural heritage, both domestically and internationally. The author posits that the paramount contribution of anthropologists, both domestically and internationally, to Chinese cultural heritages and the related protection endeavors lies in their academic research outcomes being predominantly based on their respective fieldwork practices. These outcomes, shaped and realized through on-the-ground fieldwork, hold exceptional value for cultural heritage administration and national cultural policies, as they effectively provide cultural criticism and dissenting perspectives.

The impact of cultural heritage listing on regional tourism development in China

AbstractExisting studies have shown that intangible cultural heritage (ICH) listing system promotes the development of the tourism economy. However, it remains unclear which regions benefit most from ICH listing due to inherent differences in ICH resource endowments across regions. We address this issue by examining the impact of ICH listing on regional tourism development using China's prefecture‐level panel data from 2000 to 2019. By employing a two‐stage least squares methodology, we address the endogeneity issue and identify which regions derive the greatest benefits from ICH listing. Our findings reveal that regions with higher cultural diversity have more ICH resources and benefit more from ICH listings, resulting in positive effects on domestic and international tourism. Additionally, tangible cultural resources further amplify this relationship. These results underscore the importance of ICH protection and provide valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to leverage local ICH resources for regional tourism development.

Research on the Redesign of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Based on Sustainable Livelihood—The Case of Luanzhou Shadow Play Empowering Its Rural Development

The majority of China’s intangible cultural heritage is rooted in rural areas, and the integration of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) with rural resources has potential for sustainable development. This study develops a theory of sustainable livelihoods for ICH rural areas, employing design intervention strategies to strengthen core capital, thereby promoting the protection of ICH and the sustainable development of rural areas. Through a case study of China’s ICH, specifically Luanzhou shadow play, this study focuses on core livelihoods capital: design capital and cultural capital. The key elements of the two were analyzed through the use of interviews and questionnaires. The Luanzhou shadow play was redesigned for cultural and creative products and digital application innovation. This approach effectively meets the needs of the target groups and meets the requirements of rural revitalization and ICH, thereby enhancing the adaptability and resilience of rural areas. This study offers a new development path for the heritage of Luanzhou shadow play and local rural areas while also providing a reference for the differentiated development of other non-legacy rural areas.

In the process of inheritance and development of Su embroidery technology, through the analysis of the challenges faced by Su embroidery technology in the current market to find the market positioning, strengthen the optimization of Su embroidery technology to enhance and promote the brand, explain the innovative use of multimedia technology in the digital creation of the brand, to enrich the propaganda channels of Su embroidery technology, to set up the brand's degree of memory and cognition, and to effectively convey the brand information, to achieve multi-dimensional publicity effect, making its cultural connotation well preserved. The cultural connotation can be well preserved and promoted, which has a positive effect on the inheritance and development of Su embroidery craft.

In April 2024, six projects in cooperation with Kashgar University and GMT Technology (Shenzhen) Co., Ltd. were approved as industry-university cooperation collaborative education projects by the Ministry of Education. These projects cover intangible cultural heritage protection, teacher capacity improvement, virtual simulation platform development and other fields, aiming to cultivate high-quality talents that meet the needs of modern society through interdisciplinary cooperation and the application of educational technology. The article emphasizes the important role of the industry-university cooperation model in enhancing students' practical ability and promoting the connection between educational content and industrial needs. Through these project practices, the potential value of cooperative education projects in promoting interdisciplinary and enhancing educational adaptability and innovation capabilities is revealed.

The Contemporary Value of the Development of Intangible Cultural Heritage Animation

The protection and inheritance development of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) has seen the significant involvement of emerging media, playing a crucial role in promoting the widespread dissemination and fostering the protection and inheritance of ICH culture. Among various new media matrices, animated imagery has emerged as a formidable force in the past decade, playing a vital role in the protection and inheritance of ICH, showcasing the contemporary value of the development of ICH animation. Examining the current status of the development of ICH animation, there is a cultural, technological, and skillful integration between ICH and animation. This synergy generates a force for development, highlighting prominent characteristics in three aspects: content reconstruction, form reshaping, and the coexistence of values. However, after the processes of reconstruction and reshaping, a new issue arises in the rapid development of ICH animationwhether the original connotations of ICH culture can be accurately preserved.

Exploring the role of artificial intelligence in the protection of intangible cultural heritage through short video communication

The preservation of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has gradually shifted to digital innovations in the era of expanding information technologies (IT). This study uses brief video communication to investigate the function of artificial intelligence (AI) in ICH protection. A social networking platform is connected with the AI-driven method. This study comprises instances of short videos and concentrates on essential components like musical instruments and traditional music. Next, the linguistic (text) and visual aspects of the short videos are evaluated using computer vision techniques like You only look once (YOLO) network and natural language processing (NLP) approaches. We use AI-driven analysis to find trends in the data, and we also use qualitative analysis to present it. The random forest (RF) model is developed to assess the heritage transmission level in the videos based on factors like security and cultural importance. The outcomes of the RF model are analyzed in terms of precision, accuracy, and f-measure metrics. Additionally, performance comparisons of the allocation of traditional musical instruments under different production types are carried out, and outcomes are also obtained visually using data visualization tools. This study finally shows how AI can be used to enhance ICH safety through short video communication technology.

Correlation Analysis for the Inheritance Pathways of Inlaid Porcelain Techniques under Rural Revitalization: Case Study of Chaoshan Region, China

Rural revitalization is essential for achieving the goals of a modern country, with culture serving as both a spiritual pillar and core competitive strength. This study focuses on the inheritance of the intangible cultural heritage of inlaid porcelain techniques in the Chaoshan region. Using Pearson and Kendall correlation analyses, this research investigates the inheritance pathways and related factors in Chaoshan, supported by literature reviews, field surveys, and interviews. Further, this study delves into the challenges and opportunities faced in the transmission of inlaid porcelain techniques and explores effective inheritance pathways to ensure their sustainable development. The findings indicate strong correlations between the transmission of inlaid porcelain techniques and modern educational training, economic factors, public awareness of intangible cultural heritage, challenges of modernization and changing times, familial inheritance methods, cultural protection, and intellectual property rights. Strengthening the training of artisans is crucial for the preservation of inlaid porcelain craftsmanship, and integrating traditional craftsmanship with modern business practices is crucial for promoting rural economic development and transmission of traditional culture. This research provides empirical evidence for cultural revitalization in rural settings, emphasizing that the protection and development of intangible cultural heritage should align with modernization efforts to ensure the sustainable transmission of this valuable cultural heritage. The study findings offer valuable insights for policy formulation and practice, facilitating cultural innovation and integration of traditional lifestyles in rural areas.

The evaluation system of outstanding craftsmen of traditional building construction skills based on the Delphi method

In recent years, with the deepening of the work on the protection of intangible cultural heritage, artisans and traditional craftsmen have gained public attention. Various levels of government have also introduced relevant policy documents to select outstanding craftsmen, aiming to revitalize the traditional cultural industry. This study utilizes Rost-CM6 to analyze the content of government selection texts, extract high-frequency words, summarize the evaluation requirements for traditional craftsmen, and use a two-round Delphi questionnaire survey to construct an evaluation index system and weights. The research concludes that the inheritance of skills and reputation are the most fundamental and important criteria in the selection of outstanding craftsmen; similar weights for indicators indicate that these nine selection criteria are the core requirements for outstanding craftsmen

Virtual Interactive Display Space Design of Intangible Cultural Heritage

This paper focuses on the design and generation of the virtual interactive exhibition space of intangible cultural heritage, aiming to provide an innovative path for the inheritance and display of intangible cultural heritage through digital technology. Through in-depth study of the connotation and characteristics of intangible cultural heritage, combined with AR augmented reality, holographic projection, motion sensing interaction and other modern technological means, the design and generate a creative, interactive and immersive virtual display space. The design not only shows the historical origin and artistic characteristics of the intangible cultural heritage, but also emphasizes its modern value and innovative development, aiming to enhance the public's cognition and interest in the intangible cultural heritage, and promote the inheritance and development of the intangible cultural heritage. Recording China in Sound: Audio-Visual Landscape and Cultural Expression in “China in the Sound”

By focusing on 100 famous historical and cultural cities, “China in the Sound” vividly presents their dialects, intangible cultural heritage, municipal cuisine, folk stories, urban development, and other contents. Intangible cultural heritage of Ukraine: scientific and practical significance, structure, and development prospects


 
 
 Current objects of UNESCO’s intangible national and world cultural heritage (here-inafter – World Heritage) have been systematized and the list of nominees for the status of objects of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of Ukraine has been expanded, which is considered as an option for partial compensation in the war and post-war period of resource and recreational losses countries; the fragmentary systematization of objects of ethnocultural tourism is reflected in the map-schematic and tabular elements of the presented material. The creation of a research center for the Azov National Park based on the University of Melitopol (Ukraine) and its joining with European universities studying the National Park of their countries is interpreted as one of the scientific and practical triggers for the protection, preservation, and development of the national network of National Park facilities. It is emphasized that the problem of protecting the World Heritage as a whole and ICH as its component is positioned as one of the key priorities of world, European, and national humanitarian development in the 21st century, and the constructive activities of the world community on the protection of ICH, the effective efforts of UNESCO in legal support of the outlined process are a significant factor in the actualization of state policy regarding the conservation and promotion of traditional crafts, folklore, art, and national cuisine. It is noted that the objects of ethnographic and ethnocultural tourism are a kind of benchmarks and beacons of the resource-recreational «fabric» of any country, which radiate the light of its spirit, national history, and culture. At the same time, in modern times of globalism and ultra-globalism, despite the positive dynamics of the number of identified ethnographic tourism locations, and the increase in the number of objects of intangible heritage, their chances of survival are steadily decreasing. Based on the analysis of the statistics of the recruitment of students for the «Tourism» specialty at the Higher Secondary Education in Kyiv (Ukraine) over the past 10 years, a trend of a constant decrease in demand for this specialty has been revealed.
 
 

Investigation on the Present Situation of Music Intangible Cultural Heritage in Bayannur City, Inner Mongolia

The protection of intangible cultural heritage (referred to as "intangible heritage") is an idea put forward by UNESCO to protect human cultural diversity in order to safeguard the overall value and long-term interests of mankind. Chinese excellent traditional culture is profound and varied, among which music is an important part of Chinese excellent traditional culture. There are four intangible music projects in Bayannur City, Inner Mongolia, but the overall level of inheritance and development is not high. The main problems are: the inheritors are seriously aging; The innovation level of "works" is low; Insufficient publicity and promotion, not closely integrated with the development of the times and the economy and society. Based on this, this paper puts forward several specific paths to promote the inheritance and development of music Intangible Cultural Heritage projects in this area: vigorously cultivate inheritors and support performance groups; Create new tracks that adapt to the development of the times; Use the modern Internet to publicize from the media platform and gradually realize digital preservation; Local colleges and universities should undertake the responsibility of "intangible heritage" protection and inheritance.

The Contemporary Transmission Methods and Education of Chinese Jinghe Opera to Address Current Challenges in Hubei Province

The objective of this qualitative research study is to analyze the contemporary transmission methods and educational approaches employed in preserving and revitalizing Chinese Jinghe opera to address current challenges in Hubei Province. The research site, Jingzhou City in Hubei Province, serves as the backdrop for exploring this multifaceted cultural heritage. Nine key informants, including scholars, practitioners, and community members, provide diverse perspectives on Jinghe Opera and its transmission. Semi-structured interviews serve as the basis for data collection, and thematic analysis follows to reveal recurring themes and patterns. The study reveals the historical significance of Jinghe Opera, its evolution, and the critical roles of supporting institutions, such as the Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center and Yangtze University. Challenges facing Jinghe Opera, such as a shortage of original works and an aging transmission workforce, are discussed. Proposed solutions include fostering creativity, modernizing education, and establishing institutional support. This research contributes to the broader discourse on cultural heritage preservation and demonstrates the resilience of traditional art forms in a changing cultural landscape.

The Application Practice of Acupuncture Boneless Lanterns in Modern Brands

In the century when the oriental style is hot, the application of Chinese elements in visual design is increasing rapidly. Whether it is the need of consumers to pursue "cultural individuality" or the urgent requirement to promote and protect the national traditional culture, the integration of Chinese traditional culture is undoubtedly the next hot trend. The Chinese national culture is broad and profound, with many wonderful cultural and artistic treasures. Flower lantern is one of the traditional folk crafts in ancient China. Quanzhou flower lantern has unique craft characteristics, long history and rich cultural connotation, and is also a national intangible cultural heritage protection project. The main research object of this paper is based on the artistic characteristics of "needled boneless lantern". Through literature analysis, induction and extraction, design practice and other methods, this paper extracts and analyzes its historical and cultural connotation, art form appreciation, traditional pattern technology, and combines it with modern technology to explore and summarize, feel the unique charm of oriental culture, and form a diversified collision between traditional handicraft culture and modern brand design.
