Do Instruction Skills Impress Employers?

Several members of the Education for Bibliographic Instruction Committee (ACRL Instruction Section) conducted a pilot project to investigate the perceived importance of library instruction skills to employers, and whether instruction experience or coursework is important in getting a job for which library instruction is a stated responsibility. Results of a telephone survey indicate that library instruction is viewed as an important service within academic libraries and that employers do consider skills or experience in the area of library instruction in the hiring process.

The Lower Jurassic in a part of western Stara Planina Mts. (biostratigraphy and palaeotectonics)

Detailed biostratigraphical study (on brachiopods, bivalves and ammonites) on seven instructive sections established that only a part of them are complete, while the others are more or less incomplete. The reason for this phenomenon is the gradual marine Early Jurassic transgression which has occurred during the Hettangian in some areas (i.e. the section near the Gaganica Village), and later – during the Early Pliensbachian (the section at the Ledenika Cave). Locally the marine transgression had been preceded by continental lacustrine and (or) paludal accumulation (the sections near the villages of Belimel, Kamenna Riksa and Gorno Ozirovo). The area studied belonged to three major block palaeostructures of the Mocsian Early-Middle Jurassic Platform - the Eastern margin of the Belimel Step of the Vidin Early-Middle Jurassic Complex Horst, the Selanovci Step of the Mihajlovgrad Early-Middle Jurassic Complex Graben and the Ozirovo Step of the Vraca Early-Middle Jurassic Complex Horst. Tile Ozirovo Step possessed a complex block structure with step-like arrangement of lowest range blocks in descending order. On their basis the gradual transition to the Izdremec Early-Middle Jurassic Graben or to the Selanovci Step of the Mihajlovgrad Graben has been achieved. The lower Jurassic sediments studied in the sections have been deposited in the shallow shelf while the water dynamics intensity has increased approaching the adjacent shore.

Instruction Librarians: Acquiring the Proficiencies Critical to their Work

A bibliographic instruction librarian must possess many proficiencies. In an initial survey of members of the Bibliographic Instruction Section of the Associafion of College and Research Libraries, respondents evaluated the importance of eighty-four bibliographic instruction skills in thirteen categories. Skills in communication, instruction, and planning accounted for fourteen of the top twenty-five skills. In a second survey, respondents indicated how they had acquired the most important proficiencies and where they would have liked to have acquired them

Resource for Managing Sleep Disorders

To enhance physicians' knowledge of the prevalent problem of sleep disorders, a 50-minute videotape program designed as a learning and self-assessment experience in evaluating and treating these disorders was coproduced with the Network for Continuing Medical Education. The program has been presented nationally to about 25,000 medical professionals. The mean correct score was 50% for the pretest, 69% for the instructional section, and 79% for the posttest; the composite score on the posttest was 59% higher than that on the pretest. Physicians' responses indicated strengths and weaknesses in their knowledge of sleep disorders, thus delineating future directions for medical education in insomnia, narcolepsy/cataplexy, nightmares, night terrors, sleepwalking, and enuresis. All of these sleep disorders can be best evaluated and treated by the general physician.

EXAMINATION PERFORMANCE IN LECTURE‐DISCUSSION AND PERSONALIZED INSTRUCTION COURSES1

Students enrolled in a Psychology of Learning course were assigned to either a lecture section, one of two similar personalized instruction sections, or a fourth section that rotated across all three teaching procedures. All students took identical midterms and a final examination. After correcting test performance for differences in the cumulative grade point average of students in the four sections, examination performance of students in the personalized sections was found to be superior to that of students in the lecture section. An analysis of class section examination performance by item type revealed that students in the lecture section scored lower on all item types, but the greatest differences occurred on items that required written responses (essay and fill-in items) rather than recognition responses (multiple choice items). A gross analysis of student performance in the class rotated across the instructional procedures suggests that personalized instruction had its greatest impact on students with "average" to "poor" academic records.

A control system for logical block diagnosis with data loading

This paper describes a section of an integrated diagnostic monitor system which facilitates the checking of sections of instructions or subroutines anywhere in the object program. A new method of specifying all diagnostic operations in a format similar to a computer program makes the system convenient to use and relatively simple to understand. The paper also describes a number of other novel diagnostic features which can be included in the system.

III.—On a New Section in the Middle Lias of Lincoln

The quarrying operations that have been carried out during the last five years at Handley's Pit, Lincoln, have led to the exposure of some very complete and instructive sections in the Middle Lias.Handley's Pit is situate on the North Cliff, at a distance of about a furlong from the now disused pit of Glaisiers, and immediately below that of the Lincoln Brick Company (late Swan's). When compared with the sequence exposed in Swan's Pit, it affords some interesting details that assist materially in clearing up some of the doubtful points to which Mr. Dalton referred in the Geological Survey Memoir on Lincoln Geology regarding the limitation of the range of A. margaritatus, and the occurrence of the Marlstone Rock-bed in the Lincoln District.

II.—The Lias Marlstone of Tilton, Leicestershire

When the new railway from Nottingham to Market Harborough was made, several instructive sections in the Upper and Middle Lias series were opened out between the latter place and Tilton. Most of these are now covered up and grass-grown, but one of the best is still partially laid bare in the deep cutting at Tilton Station. This Tilton section has become one of considerable interest to the geologists of the Midland district, from the complete and characteristic exposure which it gives of the Marlstone Rock of Leicestershire in its fully developed and unweathered form, and also on account of the rich fauna which that rock, and in particular its top or ‘Transition Bed,’ has here yielded.

On some sections of boulder clay, peat, and stratified beds recently exposed at Redhal, Slateford, near Edinburgh

The new quarry in which these sections are exposed lies to the north of the quarry, hitherto called Redhall Quarry, and is separated from it by the canal and the Caledonian Railway. Both quarries are in the same line of strike in the carboniferous rocks, which dip to the west along this line. Unfortunately, a large portion of the beds overlying the sandstone had been removed before I saw the sections, and the process of sloping the banks had been going on for some time—a very unlucky proceeding for the geologist. Still, there was enough left to show the very interesting and instructive sections we have in this locality. At the south end of the quarry, where the process of tirring was going on when I first observed it, the sandstone beds, as I have remarked, dip to the west. At the east side of the section the beds are sharp, unweathered, and truncated, the spaces between the ends of the beds being firmly packed with hard, dry boulder clay, full of both angular and rubbed stones. The two lowest beds of sandstone exposed are each four or five feet thick. The ends of these beds are also truncated, showing as it were a cliff from eight to ten feet deep, facing the east. This is also filled up with boulder clay, enclosing large angular blocks of sandstone, evidently derived from the end of the beds, and also a large number of smaller stones, scarcely any of them rubbed or

Along the coast between Elie and St Monance* occurs one of the most interesting and instructive sections of carboniferous strata to be seen anywhere—beds of sandstone, shale, and limestone, with sometimes a seam of coal, dipping at almost every angle, and interrupted in many places by masses of trap tuff and innumerable trap dykes. About a mile east from Elie, at a point in this section near the railway bridge at Ardross, there are some beds of shale and impure limestone, thickly studded with Encrinites, Cyathopsis fungites, and a great number of Loxonemae and crushed Productae. Lying on the projecting edges of some of these beds of shale are small patches of sandstone, the recent formation of which is evident from an examination of the beds lying over but not upon them. Above the beds of shale was a bed of tenacious clay, containing recent shells, Littorina littorea, Turritella communis, &c., above which was the blown sand, which accumulates on the surface all along the coast. This sand was washed down by the rain over the clay, and deposited on the edges of the beds of shale, while the siliceous particles of which the sand was composed were cemented together, partly by carbonate of lime held in solution by the rain-water, and derived, no doubt, from the shells occurring in the sand and in the clay, and partly from a ferruginous cementing material contained in the clay. On the Correlation, Nature and Origin of the Drifts of North-west Lancashire and a part of Cumberland, with Remarks on Denudation

1. I ntroduction . A re the drifts of different districts merely local variations of one great formation which cannot be systematically divided ? or can these deposits in their more persistent features be satisfactorily synchronized over extensive areas? As this is a very important question, and as little or no notice of any attempt to classify or correlate the drifts of the north-west of England has yet been communicated to this Society, the author hopes that the following account of observations made during prolonged visits to Blackpool, Ulverstone, and Lancaster in 1868-69 may not prove unacceptable. 2. C oast -S ection of D rifts at B lackpool . There are perhaps few parts of England where such extensive and instructive sections of distinct kinds of drift are clearly exposed as in the immediate neighbourhood of Blackpool. Beyond an acquaintance with the fact, derived from the Geological Magazine*, that Mr. Binney, F.R.S., had found sea-shells in, and had written on these drifts about eighteen years ago†, when the triplex division of drift deposits had scarcely been suggested*, the author thought it best to remain ignorant of what had been said about this particular locality previously to his making a series of personal observations† a. On the Section of the Metamorphic and Devonian Strata at the Eastern Extremity of the Grampians

One of the most instructive sections of the crystalline rocks composing the Grampian Mountains is seen at the termination of that chain on the coast of Kincardineshire, between Stonehaven and Aberdeen. Having found this section to differ in some important points from the structure usually ascribed to these mountains, I now offer a short account of it to the Society. The section at p. 547 is only intended to illustrate the general position of the strata without entering into minute details. Commencing with the southern portion of the section, the first rock is the Old Bed Sandstone ( a ) forming part of the great formation which underlies the Scottish coal-field. It is well seen on the coast in this district, where it is quarried near Stonehaven. This rock is often described as evidently made up of the detritus of the mountains on the north, but its mineral characters in this place hardly bear out the statement.
