Evolving Professional Identities: A Narrative Exploration of a Chinese Preservice EFL Teacher’s Practicum Experience

This paper presents a narrative study on the professional identity development of a Chinese preservice EFL teacher, examining her experiences before, during, and after the teaching practicum. The data for this research were gathered through in-depth interviews, documents, and observations. By offering a comprehensive narrative of Yang’s practicum journey, this study sheds light on the evolving nature of professional identity among Chinese preservice EFL teachers. Through the framework of teacher socialization, the findings reveal distinct phases in Yang’s professional identity. Yang’s stories highlight the dynamic and evolving process of professional identity development, characterized by continuous negotiation, adjustment, and reflection at each stage of the practicum. Additionally, this paper offers practical recommendations for educational institutions, placement schools, and preservice teachers. By integrating these findings, future teacher education programs can better prepare aspiring educators to navigate the complexities of professional identity development, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of EFL teacher training in China.

Innovative Learning Strategies to Enhance Student Motivation and Academic Achievement: A Constructivist Learning Perspective in Islamic Religious Education

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of innovative, constructivist-based learning strategies in enhancing student motivation and academic achievement. The constructivist approach, which emphasizes active, project-based, and collaborative learning, was implemented in a higher education setting to assess its impact on student motivation and academic outcomes. A quasi-experimental research design with treatment and control groups was employed, involving students from various academic programs. Data were collected through questionnaires measuring learning motivation and academic performance before and after the implementation of innovative strategies. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics, including t-tests to compare differences between the treatment and control groups. The findings indicate that the application of constructivist-based innovative learning strategies significantly improves student motivation and academic achievement. Active and project-based learning methods increased student engagement and facilitated better understanding of the material, as reflected in improved academic outcomes. The study also underscores the importance of a supportive learning environment, including the use of digital technology, in fostering the learning process. Limitations of the study include a limited sample size and contextual variables that may influence the results. The study provides recommendations for educational institutions to adopt innovative learning strategies and encourages further research to explore various learning approaches in greater depth

Setting up an institutional OMERO environment for bioimage data: Perspectives from both facility staff and users.

Modern bioimaging core facilities at research institutions are essential for managing and maintaining high-end instruments, providing training and support for researchers in experimental design, image acquisition and data analysis. An important task for these facilities is the professional management of complex multidimensional bioimaging data, which are often produced in large quantity and very different file formats. This article details the process that led to successfully implementing the OME Remote Objects system (OMERO) for bioimage-specific research data management (RDM) at the Core Facility Cellular Imaging (CFCI) at the Technische Universität Dresden (TU Dresden). Ensuring compliance with the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable) principles, we outline here the challenges that we faced in adapting data handling and storage to a new RDM system. These challenges included the introduction of a standardised group-specific naming convention, metadata curation with tagging and Key-Value pairs, and integration of existing image processing workflows. By sharing our experiences, this article aims to provide insights and recommendations for both individual researchers and educational institutions intending to implement OMERO as a management system for bioimaging data. We showcase how tailored decisions and structured approaches lead to successful outcomes in RDM practices. Lay description: Modern bioimaging facilities at research institutions are crucial for managing advanced equipment and supporting scientists in their research. These facilities help with designing experiments, capturing images, and analyzing data. One of their key tasks is organizing and managing large amounts of complex image data, which often comes in various file formats and are difficult to handle. This article explains how the Core Facility Cellular Imaging (CFCI) at Technische Universität Dresden successfully implemented a specialized system called OMERO. With this system it is possible to manage and organize bioimaging data sustainably in a way that they are findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable according the FAIR principles. We describe the practical implementation process on exemplary projects within scientific research and medical education. We discuss the challenges we faced, such as creating a standard way to name files, organizing important information about the images (known as metadata), and ensuring that existing image processing methods could work with the new system. By sharing our experience, we aim to offer practical advice and recommendations for other researchers and institutions interested in using OMERO for managing their bioimaging data. We highlight how careful planning and structured approaches can lead to successful data management practices, making it easier for researchers to store, access, and reuse their valuable data.

Local power, global reach: the rise and impact of domestic payment networks in the financial landscape

PurposeThere is an increasing shift toward cashless societies worldwide, with electronic payment networks at the forefront of facilitating this transition. The purpose of this research is to explore the critical role of domestic payment networks and to propose recommendations for the effective implementation of such networks.Design/methodology/approachThis research paper uses a multiple-case study design, informed by global best practices in domestic payment systems. Using thematic and content analysis methodologies, this research rigorously analyzes secondary data sources to investigate the strategic importance of domestic payment networks to national economies and the motivations driving their developments.FindingsThis paper illuminates the role of domestic payment networks in advancing cost-effective transactions, enhancing financial inclusion and safeguarding national sovereignty. It highlights the growing trend among nations to prioritize the development of their own payment systems. The research further explores the strategic initiatives undertaken by governments to prefer domestic over multinational networks, thereby maintaining control over their financial systems and safeguarding economic interests. Additionally, the study addresses the challenges these networks face, providing a thorough analysis that serves as insight for policymakers and financial institutions aiming to develop and improve their domestic payment infrastructures amidst current and future challenges.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the existing literature on domestic payment networks by studying their significance within the global financial ecosystem, particularly highlighting their role in advancing financial inclusion and ensuring national financial sovereignty. This research paper uses competition state theory as a foundation for its arguments and provides policy and practical recommendations for policymakers and financial institutions. The Needs and Readiness of the Islamic Banks to Adopt the Comprehensive Islamic Accounting Standards: The Malaysian Experience

The Islamic finance sector in Malaysia has seen substantial growth over the past few decades, becoming one of the leading markets for Islamic financial products and services. This growth has brought about significant challenges in financial reporting, primarily due to the limitations of conventional International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in addressing the unique characteristics of Islamic financial transactions. The shari’ah transactions are governed by Shariah principles, which prohibit interest (riba) and emphasize on risk-sharing, ethical investments, and social justice. The study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current issues and debates surrounding the need for comprehensive Islamic accounting standards in Malaysia. It will review recent literature, regulatory developments, and the experiences of practitioners in the particular field. Furthermore, the report seeks to highlight the readiness of Bank Negara Malaysia and all Islamic Banks to adopt Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institution (AAOIFI) standards and explore the feasibility of integrating these standards within the International Financial Reporting Standard (IFRS) framework. Additionally, this report aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on Islamic accounting by offering critical insights and recommendations for policymakers, regulators, and financial institutions. The ultimate goal is to enhance the transparency, comparability, and reliability of financial reporting in the Islamic finance sector, thereby promoting its sustainable growth and integration into the global financial system.

Emphasising the crucial significance of achieving a harmonious and cohesive degree of engagement, it aims to address the urgent problem of teacher attrition. The study creates a unified narrative that redefines teacher retention, especially in marginalised communities. It reframes the topic by integrating Kahn's theory of engagement with Schaufeli et al. model of work engagement. These two theoretical frameworks provide teachers with a deeper comprehension and direction in navigating the complexities of their profession, assisting them in achieving long-term commitment. Crypto Savvy: Navigating the World of Digital Assets for Financial Gains

This research investigates the impact of Crypto Savvy and Digital Assets on Financial Gains through Investment Strategies at BNI Cabang Surakarta. Using a quantitative approach and structural equation modeling (SEM) with Smart PLS, data from 70 bank customers were analyzed. The results indicate significant direct effects of Crypto Savvy and Digital Assets on Investment Strategies and Financial Gains. Specifically, Crypto Savvy and Digital Assets positively influence Investment Strategies, which in turn enhances Financial Gains. Moreover, indirect effects analysis reveals that Crypto Savvy and Digital Assets indirectly contribute to Financial Gains through Investment Strategies, highlighting the mediating role of Investment Strategies in translating crypto literacy and digital asset integration into financial gains. These findings underscore the importance of enhancing knowledge and strategic management of digital assets within banking operations to optimize financial performance. The study's insights provide actionable recommendations for BNI Cabang Surakarta and similar institutions to improve their digital asset strategies and achieve sustainable financial success in the evolving financial landscape.

Cultivating capabilities and coping: accepting and analysing moments of communicative opacity in multilingual encounters

Abstract Researching in heterogeneous communities can present challenges for the most experienced of researchers, especially in the context of ethnographic work, where the dynamism and unpredictability of a research setting can make it difficult to anticipate the languages spoken. Drawing on data from multilingual health consultations, I reflect on incidents where language(s) extend beyond the scope of my repertoire and inhibit the immediacy of inference. Ensuing collaborative processes of translation, transcription and analysis offer opportunities to illuminate (mis)understanding(s), but also demonstrate how additional contributions can complexify and shape what can be understood as ‘interpretation’. In documenting some of the practical and ethical considerations that emerge during the research journey, I explore the experience of developing capabilities to cope with communicative opacity and (un)expected tensions. I conclude with some tentative recommendations for institutions seeking to support doctoral students embarking on fieldwork in diverse settings.

Class grievances before and after the Arab uprisings

To date, analysis of the role of entrepreneurs in the Arab uprisings has been limited. We use micro-level World Bank survey data collected from Arab entrepreneurs in the manufacturing and service sectors across a range of countries to highlight entrepreneur grievances as one proxy for the role that class might have played in the Arab uprisings. We find evidence that dissatisfaction with levels of corruption was particularly high among entrepreneurs in Egypt, Syria and Yemen on the eve of the Arab uprisings, but we also find that Arab entrepreneurs throughout the region share concerns when it comes to macroeconomic and political stability, infrastructural shortcomings and worker training, all of which are key to successful development. More recent data indicate that entrepreneurs in a number of countries (some of which had regime changes, while others did not) remain concerned about the same factors. Although they varied according to size and country, entrepreneur concerns at times went against pre-conceptions concerning Arab capitalist classes and were at odds with the recommendations of international financial institutions.

Examining Microfinance Loan Repayment Challenges and Procedures by Small Business Owners: The Case of Vikenge Village, Morogoro, Tanzania

The research surveys the factors affecting the ability of small business owners in Vikenge village to refund microloans. This study uses institutional theory framework to investigates the constraints encountered by these firms, their means for handling these constraints, and offer hints for improvement. Applying a qualitative research design, semi-structured interviews were performed with 13 small business proprietors. Participants were purposively selected due to their experience in microfinance lending and efficient reimbursement. Through thematic analysis, substantial issues concerning repayment challenges, techniques, and recommendations for enhancement were proven. The survey reveals a variety of obstacles that influence the repayment of loans, for instance; unexpected events, personal and familial matters, fluctuations in the economy, seasonal fluctuations in business, and complications with cash flow. Methodologies to repayment include strategies like saving money daily, options for flexible repayment, clear communication, and seeking outside financial assistance. Survey respondents also offered supportive recommendations, such as using loans for their intended purposes, decreasing interest rates, allowing more flexibility in repayment schedules, providing enhanced customer education and support, ensuring loan amounts are appropriate, and improving monitoring and collection procedures. This research survey enhances value to the current body of knowledge by delivering detailed analysis on the repayment of microfinance loans in small businesses in Vikenge village. The results proposed practical recommendations for microfinance institutions to acquire tailored repayment strategies that meet the varied requirements of borrowers, eventually leading to improved financial accessibility and long-term viability.

This comprehensive review examines the convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Financial Technologies (FinTech), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It explores the transformative potential of AI in enhancing FinTech solutions to address global challenges outlined in the SDGs. The study provides an in-depth analysis of current AI applications in financial services, their impact on sustainable development, and emerging trends in this rapidly evolving field. Key findings reveal that AI-driven FinTech innovations can significantly contribute to financial inclusion, poverty reduction, and economic growth. Machine learning algorithms are revolutionizing credit scoring, risk assessment, and fraud detection, while natural language processing is enhancing customer service and market analysis. Computer vision technologies are improving security measures and streamlining processes in the financial sector. Transformative Impact: Dramatic Arts for Grade 12 Academic Excellence

The study investigated the influence of dramatic arts on academic performance among Grade 12 students. The study was framed within the social constructivism theory, which posits that learning is an active, social process where students construct knowledge through interaction with their environment and peers. The study employed an interpretivist qualitative research methods to explore the transformative potential of dramatic arts, emphasising the impact on critical thinking, problem-solving, and proficient communication. Data from 117 students in Grade 12 who were part of a purposive sample were gathered using open-ended questionnaires, interviews, and classroom observations. The data was analysed through thematic analysis. The findings highlighted the positive impact of dramatic arts integration on academic performance, student engagement, empathy development, and communication skills. Participants reported enhanced critical thinking skills, deeper subject understanding, and a more meaningful relationship with academic subjects. The study also offered recommendations for educational institutions, including developing comprehensive programs incorporating dramatic arts, continual professional development for teachers, building robust assessment and evaluation systems, and collaboration with local theatre organisations and cultural institutions to enhance students’ understanding of dramatic arts.

THE ROLE OF QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN INCREASING ORGANIZATIONAL EFFECTIVENESS IN THE CONTEXT OF UNIVERSITIES

This paper emphasizes the importance of implementing effective QM systems in academic institutions, highlighting their significant impact on organizational effectiveness. The research aims to investigate how QM implementation can enhance efficiency within universities. It achieves this by analyzing current QM practices, identifying areas needing improvement, and proposing specific solutions. The study reveals a diverse range of QM approaches across institutions, reflecting their unique structures and processes. While many universities have initiated QM systems, the success and coverage of these initiatives vary. Key areas identified for potential improvement include decision-making transparency, interdepartmental communication, and the integration of student feedback. The research also highlights gaps, such as the lack of systematic QM implementation, unclear performance indicators, and difficulties adapting to rapid changes in higher education. The overarching message of this paper is that a well-implemented QM system can be a strategic asset for universities, supporting both academic and administrative processes. QM implementation has been shown to increase organizational efficiency, leading to improved academic processes, reduced administrative costs, and increased satisfaction among students and staff. The research findings underscore the need for continued investment and commitment to QM in higher education. Assessment of the Validity and Quality of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Screening Tools Available for Women Globally: A Systematic Review.

Background: This systematic review has the following aims: (1) to identify measurement tools used globally by healthcare providers to diagnose PCOS in women at elevated risk; (2) to assess the comprehensiveness of these tools regarding mental health and chronic pain; (3) to list strategies for validating, disseminating, and implementing these tools; and (4) to provide future recommendations for experts in healthcare settings. Methods: This review utilized the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and the Arksey and O'Malley York methodology. Studies were sourced from the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases, with inclusion criteria focusing on peer-reviewed articles addressing PCOS diagnosis and associated comorbidities. Data extraction and analysis followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) recommendations. Results: A total of 63 studies met the inclusion criteria. Findings indicate that current screening tools for PCOS often lack comprehensive integration of mental health and chronic pain assessments. Tools like the PCOSQ and its updated version, PCOSQ-50, inadequately address pain-related symptoms, highlighting a gap in holistic patient evaluation. This review identified significant associations between PCOS and mental health disorders, including anxiety and depression, emphasizing the need for mental health screenings as part of PCOS management. Conclusions: There is a critical need for validated PCOS screening tools that encompass both physical and psychological aspects of the condition. Educating healthcare providers on the cultural and social determinants influencing PCOS can improve diagnosis and patient outcomes. Future research should focus on developing holistic screening tools and culturally relevant educational resources, aiming to enhance the overall quality of life for women with PCOS.

Methodological bias in social work education: the silence of quantitative approaches in students’ research in Zimbabwe

ABSTRACT This study examines the factors contributing to the low utilization of quantitative research approaches among social work research students. A census sampling technique was employed to conduct a survey of 1268 students who had completed their final year research dissertations. The descriptive statistics revealed that 81% (n = 1022) of social work students employed qualitative research, 16% (n = 208) used mixed methods, and only 3% (n = 38) utilized quantitative approaches. A multiple linear regression analysis revealed factors that were statistically significant (ρ<.05) in predicting low utilization of quantitative approaches that include; the supervisor’s preference, the student’s secondary education, training in research methods, competency in statistics, methodological flexibility and suitability, resources constraints, professional assistance, and fear of failure. These findings prompt recommendations for social work training institutions to enhance their research capacity, adopt co-supervisions, advocate for quantitative research, and prioritize continuous research mentorship in statistical tools.

Transforming University: digital transition and future challenges for Higher Education

Introduction: When considering future learning environments in formal, non-formal, and informal domains, it is crucial to acknowledge the influence of the infosphere in which we are deeply immersed. Methodology: This study is focused on the concept of "circularity" between theory and empirical research. It uses a combination of research methods to carry out an exploratory and comparative analysis among six case studies/universities from five European countries. The analysis takes a multi-perspective approach and applies the translation model to study the complex translation process in supranational, national, and local policy practices. Results: The research highlighted the similarities and differences between the analyzed cases, and subsequently provided valuable recommendations for political decision-makers and academic institutions to guide the digital transition. Conclusions: From the analysis of dimensions, it is clear that the university system needs to reassess its teaching methods, organizational structures, management strategies, assessment processes, relationships, and competence frameworks in the teaching and learning processes. Discussion: This process can be enhanced by exploring new research paths to propose guidelines and direct political planning, organizational strategies, and teaching practices in the future European Higher Education space.

The online PhD dropout: narratives and meanings of withdrawal

Online doctoral dropout is a persistent yet largely overlooked issue by institutions and researchers. This qualitative study investigated thecandidates’ circumstances leading to withdrawal, its emotional repercussions, and subsequent academic trajectories. We conducted in-depth interviews with ten former part-time online PhD students and employed thematic analysis to identify dominant narratives of withdrawal. Findings showed three narratives: reluctance, grief, and relief. Reluctant dropouts perceived themselves as “being dropped out" and were more inclined to complete their doctorates in the future due to sustained motivation. Grieving dropouts experienced frustration and guilt, still processing a painful experience. Relieved dropouts viewed leaving the PhD as the right decision considering their circumstances and were ready to move forward in their lives. We argue that online doctoral dropout is polysemic and should not be automatically equated to the final chapter of the doctoral trajectory. Recommendations for institutions include implementing exit interviews, follow-up procedures, and re-engagement paths.
