As part of a university system with campuses around the globe, the library of NYU Abu Dhabi is part of a network of libraries that shares holdings with campuses in New York, Shanghai and other locations internationally. As an American-based university in the Middle East, seeking to be a bridge between cultures, NYU Abu Dhabi also promotes scholarship and interest in the social and cultural traditions of the region in which it is located. The Archives and Special Collections of the NYU Abu Dhabi Library has materials of relevance to this mission, but due to the uniqueness or rarity of such materials, it cannot lend them in the same manner that the library does other materials. As a result, the library is investigating the role of digitization as a means of increasing access and encouraging use of its archival holdings. This paper examines some of the logistical and practical issues encountered in its initial pilot digitization project, as well as considerations for other institutions wishing to embark on a similar program.
