However, silicon-based anodes suffer from significant volume expansion during lithiation that can cause particle pulverization and capacity fade, continuous solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) (re-)formation, and constant electrolyte consumption. To alleviate these issues, the effect of 2-Sulfobenzoic anhydride (2-SBA) as an SEI electrolyte additive was investigated through complementary electrochemical and operando spectroscopic techniques.The electrochemical performance was evaluated through galvanostatic charge/discharge cycling. The results show that the optimum concentration of 2-SBA improves the cycling stability and capacity retention of NMC811||AG+20% SiOx (4.5 – 2.8 V) cells to more than 100 cycles compared to 70 cycles with the baseline electrolyte (BE) before cell failure. Introducing lithium difluorophosphate (LiDFP), a common additive for high-voltage applications, to the electrolyte containing 2-SBA further increased the cycle life to 160 cycles. Interestingly, LiDFP alone in the electrolyte did not lead to improved electrochemical performance or longer cycle life of the cells compared to BE, proving a beneficial dual-additive approach of combining inorganic and organic compounds for sufficient SEI formation on AG+20% SiOx anodes. The analysis of the electrochemical performance concludes that the improved SEI structure formed by 2-SBA and LiDFP mitigates pulverization. In this regard, the SEI structure is further analyzed using operando ATR-FTIR spectroscopy.Operando ATR-FTIR spectroscopy proves to be a powerful technique in battery research, particularly for investigating SEI. The ATR mode's surface sensitivity enables studying the composition of the SEI without bulk signal interference. In this work, we employed the internal reflection mode of the ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, for which the electrode of interest has to be IR permeable. Furthermore, by variation of the incident angle of the IR beam, the penetration depth can be varied to obtain an interphase profile from electrode to bulk electrolyte. In this study, the SEI composition on the silicon anode in the presence of BE and the corresponding additives, 2-SBA and LiDFP, was investigated under real-working conditions. The results elucidate that 2-SBA is accumulated and decomposed via ring-opening on the silicon surface to form a stable SEI layer. However, in the presence of LiDFP and 2-SBA, a hybrid organic and inorganic SEI layer is formed, which proves to enhance electrochemical performance and cycle life. The findings of this study provide valuable structural insights into the silicon particle surface for the development of high-voltage silicon-based lithium-ion batteries with Ni-rich cathodes.

On the History of Developing Catalysis in Ukraine (1850s–1980s)

The article is dedicated to the history of developing highly effective catalysts in the leading scientific institutions of Ukraine and explores the prerequisites for developing theories in physical chemistry, in particular those related to kinetics and catalysis. It highlights the significance of scientific discoveries at the turn of the 19th and 20th century and their application by native scientists to advance theoretical development in the field of chemistry. Special attention is paid to the works of Lev Pisarzhevskii, focusing on his advancements in electronic chemistry and, in particular, the electronic theory of catalysis. The article also outlines current challenges in creating highly efficient catalysts for the chemical and light industry, emphasizing the importance of such indicators of catalysts as activity and selectivity. Drawing on historical, scientific and patent data, the study investigates the process of creating a highly efficient catalyst for obtaining acrylic acid from acrolein. This catalyst holds a great ractical importance for the production of various polymers in industrial conditions. It is shown that, as a result of research conducted by native scientists of the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Chemistry Department of Kyiv State University, the catalyst K-2-5 was developed. The catalyst has good indicators for the industrial production of acrylic acid from acrolein. The authors also highlight works studying the properties of the obtained catalyst, specifically its porous structure, which is an important factor in catalytic processes. They extensively focus on the kinetic indicators of catalytic reactions that occur when using this catalyst. The article also emphasizes the relevance of these developments for advancing research in catalysis and chemical industrial production.

Nanofiltration Purification of Liquid Radioactive Waste

The paper presents the results of testing the purification of real liquid radioactive waste from radionuclides, bottom residues of the Kola and Beloyarsk nuclear power plants (NPP), as well as low-level wastewater from the radiochemical building of the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry RAS (IPCE RAS) using the method of nanofiltration (NF) using a polymer membrane manufactured by the Russian company “RM Nanotech.” It has been shown that in the case of single-stage NF purification of bottoms of the Kola NPP, the coefficient of purification from 60Co is 2.8, while no purification from 137Cs practically occurs. When cleaning the bottom residues of the Beloyarsk NPP from 60Co using a five-stage scheme, a coefficient of purification from 60Co equal to 388 was obtained. The combination of nanofiltration purification and selective sorption of cesium on the ferrocyanide sorbent Temoksid-35 makes it possible to obtain a dry salt residue that is not related to radioactive waste. When using the method of nanofiltration for the treatment of low-level wastewater of the Institute of Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the degree of purification was, %: 137Сs ~ 75; 90Sr ~ 91; 241Am ~ 99.5; 152Eu ~ 91; 239Pu ~ 99.5.

International Polymer Characterization Conference (POLY‐CHAR [Halle|Siegen] 2022)

The International Polymer Characterization Conference POLY-CHAR [Halle│Siegen] 2022 took place as a live digital event from 22nd to 25th May 2022. Organized jointly by the Fraunhofer IMWS in Halle, Germany, and the Institute of Physical Chemistry I of the University of Siegen, Germany, the IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry)-endorsed conference brought together more than 100 participants from five continents, who shared their research findings ranging from theoretical to experimental and fundamental to applied aspects of polymers. As a a nonprofit, non-governmental organization POLY-CHAR is devoted to creating a friendly interdisciplinary environment to share information, organize student exchange and cooperation, to hold international meetings and to provide a platform for scientist from all over the word. The annual POLY-CHAR conferences are not limited to mere “POLYmer CHARacterization”. Instead, POLY-CHAR offers an open platform for sharing ideas, presenting results, meeting old and making new friends in the scientific community. Topics cover a wide area in synthesis, characterization, modification and application of polymeric materials and composites, probably best summarized under the terms “Advanced Materials' and ‘Functional Materials”. The live digital format chosen for POLY-CHAR [Halle│Siegen] 2022 enabled unrestricted worldwide participation in times of global uncertainty regarding travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. On the first day of the conference the POLY-CHAR Short Course was held. The topics of the lectures presented on the subsequent days by 5 plenary speakers, 24 invited speakers, 66 oral speakers, 9 poster presenters from 28 countries included (i) polymer synthesis, (ii) polymer characterization, (iii) polymer physics, theory and simulations, (iv) circular economy of polymers and sustainable applications, (v) polymers for biomedical applications, biopolymers, biomedical materials and biotechnology, (vi) biopolymers in nutrition and health, (vii) elastomers, amorphous materials, nanomaterials and smart materials, (viii) mechanics of polymers, and (ix) adhesives, coatings, and advanced hybrid materials. In addition to several POLY-CHAR and IUPAC prizes for outstanding oral presentations and posters of young scientists, the following prestigious prizes were awarded to well renowned scientists to honor their academic achievements: The Richard Robert Ernst Award went to Prof. Dr. Jianyong Jin (The University of Auckland, New Zealand), the Jean-Marie Lehn Award went to Prof. Dr. Zheng Li (Peking University, China) and the Pierre-Gilles de Gennes Award was awarded to José Luis Gómez Ribelles (Universitat Polìtècnica de València, Spain). This conference volume represents a focused selection of contributions from different areas of polymer and materials science. Controllable surfactant-directed zeolitic-imidazolate-8 growth on swollen 2D zeolites

To meet society’s need for more and more specialized materials, this work focuses on the preparation of porous metal–organic framework (MOF)–zeolite hybrid materials based on two 2D zeolites, namely, IPC-1P (Institute of Physical Chemistry - 1 Precursor) and the metal–organic framework ZIF-8 (Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8). Using the previously well-established assembly–disassembly–organization–reassembly method, the zeolite was (i) synthesized, (ii) hydrolyzed to a layered zeolite, (iii) the interlayer distance was increased using the swelling agent cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, and (iv) nanocrystals of ZIF-8 were grown stepwise on the zeolite surface but predominantly at the edges of the crystallites where the openings to the interlayer region are located. This selective MOF growth and attachment was facilitated by a combination of intercalation of the metal ions and the swelling agent between the zeolite layers. The influence of the solvent and the number of additional steps on the ZIF-8 growth on the zeolite was systematically investigated, and the synthesis protocol was successfully adapted to a further two-dimensional silicate RUB-18 (Ruhr-Universität Bochum - 18). This paves the way toward the controlled preparation of more MOF–zeolite hybrid materials, which might provide interesting properties for future applications.

In vitro study of the preventive activity of fluoride varnish by X-ray diffraction

In exogenous prophylaxis, fluoride is applied directly to the tooth surface through various gels, varnishes, foams, and toothpaste. According to the global burden of disease study conducted in 2017, more than 530 million children worldwide suffer from dental caries in their primary dentition. There are few developments in the selection of non-invasive methods in the application of mineralizing varnishes. The researchers investigated experimentally, in-vitro the preventive activity of the fluoride varnish Clinpro™ White Varnish with TCP 3M (CV), using a modern method of X-ray diffraction. The 20 temporary teeth were extracted due to physiological changes. Place of study was UMDC - city of Varna and Institute of Physical Chemistry "Academician Rostislav Kaishev" of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia. Demineralization is carried out with 37% phosphoric acid (i-gel – etching gel) and applied to the smooth temporary enamel surfaces for 30 seconds. The models were then washed and dried with a water and air jet. Remineralization was performed with CV. The formation of small globules of calcium fluoride. The coating is composed mainly of fluorapatite. With the modern method of X-ray diffraction, it was proved that exogenous fluoride prophylaxis and remineralization therapy are effective methods of prevention and treatment of initial caries lesions.

THE ARCHIVE FUND OF THE L.YA. KARPOV RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY AS A SOURCE FOR THE STUDY OF INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC TRANSFER

The article examines the source potential of the archival fund of the L.Ya. Karpov Research Institute for Physical Chemistry in the study of international scientific transfer in the 1950s and 1960s. The author notes the value of the foundation's materials in studying such questions as the content of scientific transfer, channels of information transmission, the results of interaction, the composition of participants and their role in international scientific and technical cooperation. At the same time, the weak point of the foundation of the research institute is, according to the author, the chaotic and incomplete information about the legal and economic side of the transfer organization.

Software and hardware complex for radiation processing facility control

In this work, we present the software and hardware complex, based on LinacRad code, to drive a linac-based radiation facility at the Institute of Physical chemistry and Electrochemistry Russian Academy of Sciences (IPCE RAS). This facility is used to perform radiation experiments and commercial irradiation works, such as radiation-induced transformations of the materials. It is also used for the development of radiation technologies on the base of the Center for the Collective Use of Physical Methods of Investigation at IPCE RAS. The presented code is one of the four modules within the whole complex, designed for automation and control of the irradiation process. It serves as a part of the facility performance optimization to increase its capabilities for non-standard experiments. The code allows to simplify the work of the installation operators and increase the reliability of technological processes.

International Transfer in Soviet Science in the 1950s–1960s (the Case of the L.Ya. Karpov NIFHI)

The authors of this article offer their version of the answer to the question of how international scientific cooperation developed during the early stages of the scientific and technological revolution during the Cold War. The authors validate their hypothesis about the existence of a specific Soviet model of scientific transfer. The novelty of the work lies in the introduction into academic discourse of unpublished documents of the L.Y. Karpov Research Institute of Physical Chemistry, deposited at the RGA in Samara, based on the concept of scientific transfer emerging in modern historiography. The paper identifies four groups of actors of international scientific transfer, of which research institutes were the most active. The forms of scientific communications in the field of chemistry in the 1950s and 1960s emerged at international symposiums, conferences, internships, research trips, training in Soviet universities of graduate students and young scientists. These channels of interaction were sufficiently formalised and required careful preliminary preparation of documents approved at the state level. Informal communication channels (personal meetings, exchange of scientific literature), for the most part, were formed with scientists from socialist countries. Joint research projects were also built on this basis. Agreements on scientific and technical cooperation with socialist countries were an institutional reinforcement of such work. In general, the research carried out at the L.Ya. Karpov Research Institute of Physical Chemistry was deeply integrated into the trends of the scientific and technological revolution of the midtwentieth century.

The Role of Chain Processes in Cool Flames and Soot Formation

The 125th anniversary of Academician N.N. Semenov, the great natural scientist of the 20th century, is a significant event for the world scientific community. With his discoveries and tireless scientific, organizational, pedagogical, and social activities, he made an invaluable contribution to the formation of chemical physics and to the development of physics, chemistry, and biology. Nobel Prize laureate, academician N.N. Semenov played a huge role in the creation of the Department of Chemical Kinetics and Combustion of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the Institute for Problems in Combustion. Contacts with the disciples of Academician N.N. Semenov made it possible for the researchers of the Institute for Problems in Combustion to discuss their candidate and doctoral dissertations at the seminars of the Institute of Chemical Physics in Moscow. With the support of N.N. Semenov, Ya.B. Zel’dovich, and A.G. Merzhanov, All-Union Symposia on Combustion and Explosion (1980 in Alma-Ata) and on Structural Macrokinetics (1984 in Alma-Ata) were organized. The article provides an overview of the author’s works on studying the structure of the front of cool flames of diethyl ether and butane, the preflame zone of normal propane flames, and soot formation during combustion of hydrocarbons. The phenomenology, kinetics and mechanism of soot formation, and the influence of various factors on the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes, graphene, and soot are considered.

Leipzig, Berlin and Hannover: Three Stations of a Beneficial Cooperation

AbstractThis essay looks back at the three stations of Jürgen Caro's career, starting with his time as a diploma student of Chemistry (1974–1975) and PhD student in the NMR laboratory (1975–1977) at the University of Leipzig, followed by his stay in Berlin at the Central Institute of Physical Chemistry and, afterwards, the newly founded Institute of Applied Chemistry and, finally, his appointment as full professor for Physical Chemistry at the Hannover University. The focus is on some of the results of our collaboration, including the use of PFG NMR and microimaging for in‐situ observation of diffusion in nanoporous materials and the useful application of these findings in the production of high‐performance membranes. Reference is also given to joint activities in science organization such as in European research networks and the Diffusion Fundamentals conference series of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

This guest editorial dedicated to Marcin's jubilee and contribution to electrochemistry summarizes his career and recalls some stories beyond his scientific life.

The spectrum of ammonia near 0.793 [formula omitted

Two sets of NH3 absorption spectra covering the 0.793 μm region are recorded using two Bruker IFS 125 HR Fourier transform spectrometers. Three unapodized absorption spectra are recorded in Brussels over the range 11000−14500 cm−1 and the positions and intensities of 1114 ammonia lines observed in the 12491−12810 cm−1 region are measured using a multi-spectrum least squares fitting algorithm. 367 additional lines are identified in an ammonia absorption spectrum recorded in two steps at the J. Heyrovsky Institute of Physical Chemistry in Prague, using two different interference filters covering the 12000−12500 and 12400−13000 cm−1 ranges. The 1481 measured ammonia lines are analyzed using an empirical line list computed using variational nuclear motion calculations and ground state combination differences. Transitions are assigned to vibrational states with 4νNH stretching excitation (v1+v3=4). 278 out of the 1481 measured lines are assigned to 300 transitions and 119 upper state energy levels are derived from the frequencies of the assigned transitions.

Molecular and Ionic Diffusion in Ion Exchange Membranes and Biological Systems (Cells and Proteins) Studied by NMR.

The results of NMR, and especially pulsed field gradient NMR (PFG NMR) investigations, are summarized. Pulsed field gradient NMR technique makes it possible to investigate directly the partial self-diffusion processes in spatial scales from tenth micron to millimeters. Modern NMR spectrometer diffusive units enable to measure self-diffusion coefficients from 10−13 m2/s to 10−8 m2/s in different materials on 1 H, 2 H, 7 Li, 13 C, 19 F, 23 Na, 31 P, 133 Cs nuclei. PFG NMR became the method of choice for reveals of transport mechanism in polymeric electrolytes for lithium batteries and fuel cells. Second wide field of application this technique is the exchange processes and lateral diffusion in biological cells as well as molecular association of proteins. In this case a permeability, cell size, and associate lifetime could be estimated. The authors have presented the review of their research carried out in Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry, Moscow, Russia; Institute of Problems of Chemical Physics RAS, Chernogolovka, Russia; Kazan Federal University, Kazan, Russia; Korea University, Seoul, South Korea; Yokohama National University, Yokohama, Japan. The results of water molecule and Li+, Na+, Cs+ cation self-diffusion in Nafion membranes and membranes based on sulfonated polystyrene, water (and water soluble) fullerene derivative permeability in RBC, casein molecule association have being discussed.

Non-covalent interactions evidenced by EPR spectroscopy in cyclodextrin complexes

In this review are summarized studies, performed by researchers from the “Ilie Murgulescu” Institute of Physical Chemistry, involving electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy on non-covalent interactions. The review examines interactions between paramagnetic hosts and diamagnetic guests, diamagnetic hosts and paramagnetic guests, diamagnetic hosts and dual paramagnetic-fluorescent guests, interactions that accompany the formation of gel systems and interactions of fatty acid-like spin probes with proteins.

Radiodine, I-131, is released into atmosphere during normal operation of the radiopharmaceutical production facility at the Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry (NIFKhl) in Obninsk city. The paper presents analysis of monitoring of I-131 concentration in the air and radiation dose to the population of the Obninsk and its surroundings. To estimate annual radiation doses to the public I-131 concentration in the environment was first calculated. Data of radiation monitoring carried out in Obninsk were used to confirm the correctness of computed mean annual volume activity of I-131 in the air. Annual radioiodine doses to the public of Obninsk and its surroundings calculated exposed to radiation between 2015 and 2019 were within the range of 0.5 to 2.0 µSv/year, this level was considerably lower the limit set for the population living near the NIFKhI (300 µSv/year). The risk from radioiodine released into the atmosphere in the period from 2015-2019 was negligible (<10Е-6 year-1).

Environmental impact of the Research Institute of Physical Chemistry in Obninsk on soils of the nearby territory

This work focuses on the study of radioactive and chemical contamination of the soil caused by non-power generation nuclear facilities. For this purpose, the environmental monitoring of terrestrial ecosystems around the Karpov Institute of Physical Chemistry, located in the Obninsk region and exploiting research nuclear reactor, has been carried out. The annually published environmental safety reports of the Karpov Institute for the period of 2011-2018 served as sources of the initial information about the facility impact on the environment. In summer 2019, the sampling of soils around the facility was carried out in 19 locations. In laboratory studies, the following indexes of physical and chemical properties of the soil are studied: type of the soil, soil density, hygroscopic moisture, moisture capacity, acidity. Instrumental methods such as potentiometric analysis were performed to determine the content of chloride in the soil. Specific activities of radionuclides were measured in soils using gamma spectrometry. It was found that the physical and chemical properties vary from point to point. Specific activities of radionuclides in the soil also vary, and in some points the radionuclides content is particularly higher than in others. Finally, all the data were compared with a similar research done in the previous year, and we found that our physical and chemical properties are similar and the specific activities are little lower than the previous year. For everything mentioned before, it is strongly suggested that more studies about the consequences to the environment and humans should be done, in more nuclear non-power facilities.
