Longitudinal Actuated Abdomen Control for Energy Efficient Flight of Insects

The actuated abdomens of insects such as dragonflies have long been suggested to play a role in optimisation and control of flight. We have examined the effect of this type of actuation in the simplified case of a small fixed wing aircraft to determine whether energetic advantages exist in normal flight when compared to the cost of actuation using aerodynamic control surfaces. We explore the benefits the abdomen/tail might provide to balance level flight against trim changes. We also consider the transient advantage of using alternative longitudinal control effectors in a pull up flight maneuver. Results show that the articulated abdomen significantly reduces energy consumption and increase performance in isolated manoeuvres. The results also indicate a design feature that could be incorporated into small unmanned aircraft under particular circumstances. We aim to highlight behaviours that would increase flight efficiency to inform designers of micro aerial vehicles and to aid the analysis of insect flight behaviour and energetics.

Simulation-based insect-inspired flight systems.

Insects power and control their flight by flapping their wings. By controlling their aerodynamic forces and torques, they can generate precise and agile aerial manoeuvres. From an engineer's perspective, their closed-loop, flight control system depends on an overarching external mechanical 'frame' consisting of wings and thoracic shell, which is actuated by an internal system consisting of flight muscles and a complex nervous system. Insect flights are diverse but robust relying on the integration of different flexible structures including wings, exoskeletal elements, wing-hinges, musculoskeletal elements, and sensors. Computational modelling of biomechanics in insect-inspired flight systems can offer a powerful and feasible tool to unravel a passive and active mechanism (PAM) strategy, that is, how these flexible structures work interactively and complementarily to achieve a systematically efficient and robust flapping-wing dynamics and aerodynamics as well as flight control in various natural environments.

Evolution of Flight Muscle Contractility and Energetic Efficiency.

The powered flight of animals requires efficient and sustainable contractions of the wing muscles of various flying species. Despite their high degree of phylogenetic divergence, flight muscles in insects and vertebrates are striated muscles with similarly specialized sarcomeric structure and basic mechanisms of contraction and relaxation. Comparative studies examining flight muscles together with other striated muscles can provide valuable insights into the fundamental mechanisms of muscle contraction and energetic efficiency. Here, we conducted a literature review and data mining to investigate the independent emergence and evolution of flight muscles in insects, birds, and bats, and the likely molecular basis of their contractile features and energetic efficiency. Bird and bat flight muscles have different metabolic rates that reflect differences in energetic efficiencies while having similar contractile machinery that is under the selection of similar natural environments. The significantly lower efficiency of insect flight muscles along with minimized energy expenditure in Ca2+ handling is discussed as a potential mechanism to increase the efficiency of mammalian striated muscles. A better understanding of the molecular evolution of myofilament proteins in the context of physiological functions of invertebrate and vertebrate flight muscles can help explore novel approaches to enhance the performance and efficiency of skeletal and cardiac muscles for the improvement of human health.

Strong impacts of smoke polluted air demonstrated on the flight behaviour of the painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui L.)

1. A major component of biomass burning smoke is fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which has been shown to generate impacts on insect population dynamics and development. However, little is known about its effect on insect flight behaviour, even though this will influence insect dispersal and distribution, and potentially migration and ecosystem services such as pollination.2. Here we use a tethered flight mill setup to examine the behaviour of adult painted lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui L.) flying in different levels of combustion‐generated airborne PM2.5, comparison this to TFM flying under ‘clean air’ conditions.3. Descriptive statistics and paired sample t‐tests indicate that the smoke had a significantly deleterious impact on flight behaviour, with for example total flight distance covered declining by 65% during the first 20 min of flying in the least smoke contaminated air compared to ‘clean air’ control conditions, whilst average speed declined by 54% and flight duration by 32%. A strongly negative and highly significant linear correlation between flight speed and PM2.5 concentration was also observed.4. This study represents the first time that smoke effects on insect flight behaviour have been experimentally tested, and the longer the butterflies were exposed to the elevated PM2.5 concentrations the more obviously their flight behaviour declined. We conclude that the month(s)‐long episodes of air pollution often associated with agricultural burning and deforestation fires in the tropics may well be significantly affecting the behaviour of the flying insects living in those regions and/or who migrate through them.

Vibrational control: A hidden stabilization mechanism in insect flight.

It is generally accepted among biology and engineering communities that insects are unstable at hover. However, existing approaches that rely on direct averaging do not fully capture the dynamical features and stability characteristics of insect flight. Here, we reveal a passive stabilization mechanism that insects exploit through their natural wing oscillations: vibrational stabilization. This stabilization technique cannot be captured using the averaging approach commonly used in literature. In contrast, it is elucidated using a special type of calculus: the chronological calculus. Our result is supported through experiments on a real hawkmoth subjected to pitch disturbance from hovering. This finding could be particularly useful to biologists because the vibrational stabilization mechanism may also be exploited by many other creatures. Moreover, our results may inspire more optimal designs for bioinspired flying robots by relaxing the feedback control requirements of flight.

Mimicking nature's flyers: a review of insect-inspired flying robots.

Insects have attracted much interest from scientists and engineers as they offer an endless source of inspiration for creating innovative engineering designs. By mimicking flying insects, it may be possible to create highly efficient biomimetic drones. In this paper, we provide an overview on how the principles of insect flight, including large stroke amplitudes and wing rotations, the clap-and-fling effect and flight control have been implemented to successfully demonstrate untethered, controlled free-flight in the insect-inspired flying robots. Despite the lack of insect-like muscles, various electro-mechanical systems have been invented to actuate insect robots. Achieving controlled free-flight is a cornerstone of next-generation insect-inspired robots which in addition to flight will be equipped with multiple modes of transportation, similar to real flying insects.

Special Significance of Non-Drosophila Insects in Aging.

Aging is the leading risk factor of human chronic diseases. Understanding of aging process and mechanisms facilitates drug development and the prevention of aging-related diseases. Although many aging studies focus on fruit fly as a canonical insect system, minimal attention is paid to the potentially significant roles of other insects in aging research. As the most diverse group of animals, insects provide many aging types and important complementary systems for aging studies. Insect polyphenism represents a striking example of the natural variation in longevity and aging rate. The extreme intraspecific variations in the lifespan of social insects offer an opportunity to study how aging is differentially regulated by social factors. Insect flight, as an extremely high-intensity physical activity, is suitable for the investigation of the complex relationship between metabolic rate, oxidative stress, and aging. Moreover, as a “non-aging” state, insect diapause not only slows aging process during diapause phase but also affects adult longevity during/after diapause. In the past two decades, considerable progress has been made in understanding the molecular basis of aging regulation in insects. Herein, the recent research progress in non-Drosophila insect aging was reviewed, and its potential utilization in aging in the future was discussed.

Kairomone and Camera Trapping New Zealand Flower Thrips, Thrips obscuratus.

Simple SummaryCamera traps using new insect attractant lures made from the smell of ripe peaches were used to provide daily counts of New Zealand Flower Thrips from online images of the sticky base of the traps. Software and manual counting were used to determine arriving thrips counts, which fluctuated daily but showed peaks in 2013 up to 1000 thrips in a trap in one day. Application of knockdown insecticides inhibited further thrips arrival in three peach blocks, according to the camera traps. Dose response experiments with the peach lure to attract thrips showed higher catches with more lure, within 24 h, up to 11-fold above the catch in unbaited traps. A 32-fold increase in thrips per tree was achieved over the control. Camera traps have huge potential in integrated pest management, by providing daily phenology without trap visits.This project investigated how kairomone lures, camera traps, and counting software could together contribute to pest management. Images of cumulative daily catch of New Zealand Flower Thrips (NZFT) attracted to a ripe peach lactone (6-pentyl-2H-pyran-2-one; 6-PAP) were automatically loaded to the internet and compared with scanned bases checked weekly using in-house software and manual counting. Camera traps were able to provide thrips counts equivalent to delta traps, but daily and remotely. An 11-fold greater NZFT count occurred within 24 h in passive traps after polyethylene sachets loaded with 250 mg of 6-PAP were placed in trees. Intensive trapping, by placing 1, 2, 4, and 8 traps per tree (500 mg/trap), resulted in a maximum 32-fold increase in thrips per tree. While 6-PAP has proved to be a useful tool for monitoring NZFT numbers, our results suggest that it is not likely to be suitable for mass trapping. Future research should investigate NZFT behavior to better understand population movement on an area-wide basis. Camera traps can be a valuable tool for recording insect flight activity remotely, but the number of traps required for statistically reliable estimates may be prohibitive.

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals regulatory genes involved in cold tolerance and hypoxic adaptation of high-altitude Tibetan bumblebees

China has many habitats supporting a wide diversity of bumblebees, some species of which are limited in distribution to the Tibet Plateau. The high-altitude Tibet Plateau, which has low air density as well as extremely low temperatures, strains the energy requirements for flight in most insects. However, high-altitude bumblebees have adapted to the harsh conditions of this type of habitat. Bumblebees are a particular group of insect pollinators that exclusively utilize carbohydrates from flowers for energy to sustain flight. Here, gene expression was compared between low-altitude species and Bombus longipennis, and the genes upregulated in B. longipennis were involved in aerobic metabolism, such as the oxidative phosphorylation and citric acid cycle (TCA cycle) pathways. Furthermore, a conjoint analysis of the transcriptomes of six bumblebee species from the high-altitude Tibet Plateau and two bumblebee species from the low-altitude North China Plain showed that 19 genes were commonly upregulated in high-altitude species. Among these 19 commonly upregulated genes, Pfk1 was enriched in multiple glycometabolic pathways, which are the main energy pathways in bees; this upregulation enhanced the aerobic and anaerobic glycolysis processes to produce more ATP molecules to supply energy for high-altitude bumblebee flight under severe cold conditions. In addition, glycolysis was enhanced by two other genes, Rac1 and AAC2. Relative quantitative real-time PCR was used to verify that the three genes Pfk1, Rac1, and AAC2 were upregulated in the six main bumblebee species inhabiting the Tibet Plateau.

Odorant binding proteins promote flight activity in the migratory insect, Helicoverpa armigera.

Migratory insects are capable of actively sustaining powered flight for several hours. This extraordinary phenomenon requires a highly efficient transport system to cope with the energetic demands placed on the flight muscles. Here, we provide evidence that the role of the hydrophobic ligand binding of odorant binding proteins (OBPs) extends beyond their typical function in the olfactory system to support insect flight activity via lipid interactions. Transcriptomic and candidate gene analyses show that two phylogenetically clustered OBPs (OBP3/OBP6) are consistently over-expressed in adult moths of the migrant Old-World bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, displaying sustained flight performance in flight activity bioassays. Tissue-specific over-expression of OBP6 was observed in the antennae, wings and thorax in long-fliers of H.armigera. Transgenic Drosophila flies over-expressing an H.armigera transcript of OBP6 (HarmOBP6) in the flight muscle attained higher flight speeds on a modified tethered flight system. Quantification of lipid molecules using mass spectrometry showed a depletion of triacylglyerol and phospholipids in flown moths. Protein homology models built from the crystal structure of a fatty acid carrier protein identified the binding site of OBP3 and OBP6 for hydrophobic ligand binding with both proteins exhibiting a stronger average binding affinity with triacylglycerols and phospholipids compared with other groups of ligands. We propose that HarmOBP3 and HarmOBP6 contribute to the flight capacity of a globally invasive and highly migratory noctuid moth, and in doing so, extend the function of this group of proteins beyond their typical role as chemosensory proteins in insects.

Goal. To study the North-Western region of Ukraine as to the distribution and flight periods of blood-sucking dipteran insects, zoophilic flies, and botflies to protect the cattle from their attacks. Methods. Field, parasitological, laboratory, and calculation. Results. 20 species of gadfly parasite on cattle (fam. Tabanidae), which belong to the genera: Hybomitra, Chrysops, Tabanus, Haematopota, Atylotus, and Heptatoma. The flight and attack on the animals occurs from May to September, and the greatest number in July and the first half of August. 35 species of mosquitoes (fam. Culicidae) are discovered. The most common of them belong to the genera: Aedes, Anopheles, and Culex. They traced 2 increase in their amount depending on the characteristics of the season: spring (May–June) and summer (July). There are fixed 33 species of midges (fam. Simuliidae) on the territory. The genera Schoenbaueria, Simulium, and Boophthora are the dominant ones. Seasonal dynamics of attacks is characterized by two periods of increased activity of the midges — spring (May) and summer (late July – early August). Fauna of malanders (fam. Ceratopogonidae) encounters 15 species. Massive attack on the animals is observed in May–June and in early August. 10 types of zoophilic flies (fam. Muscidae) are fixed. The most common — licking (M. domestica, M. autumnalis, M. larvipara), and blood-sucking (S. calcitrans, H. stimulans, H. atripalis). They attack from late April to October, the largest number — from the end of June to September. All identified gadflies (fam. Hypodermatidae) belong to the same species — Hipoderma bovis. They are active mostly in July–August. Conclusions. Species composition, number, and timing of flight of blood-sucking dipteran insects, zoophilic flies and gadflies in the climatic zones of North-West region vary. Maximum species diversity was in the area of Polissia: gadflies — 20, mosquitoes — 35, midges — 33, malanders — 15, zoophilic flies — 10, gadflies — 1. The total flight period lasts from late April to October, the maximum activity is fixed in the period from May to September. Measures for the protection of cattle against harmful dipteran insects in the area of Polissia and Forest-Steppe should be taken in May and September.

Insect flight velocity measurement with a CW near-IR Scheimpflug lidar system.

Flight velocity measurement is an important aspect of insect research that can aid insect identification and facilitate studies and monitoring of insect movements. We propose a novel scheme for the 1-D flight velocity measurement of insects, based on a near-IR Scheimpflug lidar system. We implement this new technique and apply it to study insects at the Salter Research Farm, Robertson County, Texas. The resolution property perpendicular to the probing direction of the Scheimpflug lidar system is explored and reveals the capability of retrieving the velocity component normal to the probing direction of insects passing through the field of view of our system. We observe a shift in wingbeat frequency, which indicates the presence of new insect species during the multi-day measurement. The study on 1-D flight velocity reveals a net directional movement of insects, providing supportive evidence of the arrival of a new species.

Interspecific and Seasonal Variation in Wingbeat Frequency Among Migratory Lepidoptera in Northern China.

Many lepidopteran species rely upon active flight to migrate over long distances, thus pursuing ephemeral resources, colonizing new habitats, or escaping adverse meteorological conditions. Though their biology and ecology are often well studied, there is only scant information on their wingbeat frequency (WBF), a key aerodynamic determinant of insect flight. In this study, we assessed interspecific and seasonal variability in WBF for 85 different migratory species of Lepidoptera (11 families) under the laboratory conditions of 25 ± 1°C and 75 ± 5% RH. WBF of migrant individuals ranged between 6.7 and 84.5 Hz and substantial interspecific differences were recorded, with members of the Bombycidae exhibiting the highest mean WBFs (i.e., 55.1 ± 1.0 Hz) and Saturniidae the lowest (8.5 ± 0.2 Hz). At a species level, seasonal variation was observed in WBF for Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Scotogramma trifolii Rottemberg (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Our findings add to the scientific knowledge on flight biology of migratory insects, facilitate (automatic) monitoring and population forecasting, and can have broader implications for insect pest management or biodiversity conservation.

Semiochemicals Affecting Attraction of Ambrosia Beetle Euwallacea fornicatus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) to Quercivorol: Developing Push-Pull Control.

Euwallacea fornicatus (Eichhoff), the polyphagous shot hole borer (PSHB), is an ambrosia beetle infesting avocado Persea americana Mill. limbs in North America and Israel. We conducted field experiments with sticky traps in avocado orchards to develop push-pull semiochemical methods of managing PSHB. Traps baited with 10-fold increasing doses (0.01 to 100× or 1.26 µg to 12.6 mg/d) of attractant quercivorol were previously shown to increasingly capture female PSHB (males flightless). We converted trap catch of this relationship to a standardized effective attraction radius (EAR) that predicts capture power of baited-traps regardless of insect flight density. Earlier, piperitone and verbenone were shown to strongly inhibit attraction of PSHB to quercivorol-traps. We tested increasing numbers of 1× piperitone dispensers at 0.75-m distance surrounding a quercivorol-trap and found PSHB catch to decline exponentially. Increasing decadic doses (0.01 to 10×) of either verbenone or piperitone released at 1× quercivorol-traps caused a sigmoidal first-order kinetic-decay in catch. Verbenone (1×) placed at increasing distances (0, 0.25, 0.5, 1, and 2 m) from a 1× quercivorol-trap became increasingly ineffective in reducing catch of PSHB. We found no evidence that ethanol released from 7.5 to 480 mg/d affected attraction of PSHB, but Scobicia chevrieri (Villa and Villa) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) was increasingly attracted. Due to their relatively short-range (<0.5 m) inhibition of attractive sources, piperitone, and verbenone dispensers should be placed on avocado trunks where PSHB aggregations occur before the flight season.

Automatic tracking of free-flying insects using a cable-driven robot.

Flying insects have evolved to develop efficient strategies to navigate in natural environments. Yet, studying them experimentally is difficult because of their small size and high speed of motion. Consequently, previous studies were limited to tethered flights, hovering flights, or restricted flights within confined laboratory chambers. Here, we report the development of a cable-driven parallel robot, named lab-on-cables, for tracking and interacting with a free-flying insect. In this approach, cameras are mounted on cables, so as to move automatically with the insect. We designed a reactive controller that minimizes the online tracking error between the position of the flying insect, provided by an embedded stereo-vision system, and the position of the moving lab, computed from the cable lengths. We validated the lab-on-cables with Agrotis ipsilon moths (ca. 2 centimeters long) flying freely up to 3 meters per second. We further demonstrated, using prerecorded trajectories, the possibility to track other insects such as fruit flies or mosquitoes. The lab-on-cables is relevant to free-flight studies and may be used in combination with stimulus delivery to assess sensory modulation of flight behavior (e.g., pheromone-controlled anemotaxis in moths).

An Integrated Program to Simulate the Multibody Dynamics of Flapping Flight

This paper presents an in-house developed program that couples multibody dynamics and aerodynamics codes to simulate flapping flight of insects and micro air vehicles. The multibody dynamics code is built based on the numerical solution of the Lagrange equation, while the extended unsteady vortex-lattice method is employed to develop the aerodynamics code. The solution from the governing equation is obtained by the use of the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and validated against the simulation results from a commercial software MSC Adams for a micro air vehicle model. In this work, parallel computing techniques are applied while estimating the aerodynamics force to minimize the running time of the program.

Insect wing damage: causes, consequences and compensatory mechanisms.

The evolution of wings has played a key role in the success of insect species, allowing them to diversify to fill many niches. Insect wings are complex multifunctional structures, which not only have to withstand aerodynamic forces but also need to resist excessive stresses caused by accidental collisions. This Commentary provides a summary of the literature on damage-reducing morphological adaptations in wings, covering natural causes of wing collisions, their impact on the structural integrity of wings and associated consequences for both insect flight performance and life expectancy. Data from the literature and our own observations suggest that insects have evolved strategies that (i) reduce the likelihood of wing damage and (ii) allow them to cope with damage when it occurs: damage-related fractures are minimized because wings evolved to be damage tolerant and, in the case of wing damage, insects compensate for the reduced aerodynamic efficiency with dedicated changes in flight kinematics.

Insect Detection and Flight Tracking in a Controlled Environment Using Machine Vision: Review of Existing Techniques and an Improved Approach

Insects (like mosquitoes, bugs and flies) are one of the most common disease-vectors. Insect-borne diseases have a huge detrimental impact on human societies. Vector-borne diseases account for more than 17 percent of all infectious diseases, causing more than 700; 000 deaths annually. For proper and improved implementation of vector control interventions, the behavioural analysis of the vectors is important. Vector detection and flight analysis is an essential component to proper and implementation of control interventions. With advancements in technology, computer vision and automated tracking techniques and tools, interpretation of vector behaviours has become accurate. Improved tracking techniques allow highly accurate recording and observation of insect behaviour. Software with specifically built algorithms enable precise quantification of these behaviours. The use of these techniques can support or replace existing monitoring tools and provide improved insights on insect behaviour that can lead to more-effective vector-control measures.
