Bridging theory and practice: CFD simulation and interactive VR for conduction heat transfer learning

AbstractSoftware simulation programs and virtual reality (VR) have become powerful tools for several educational purposes, and recently, they were used in a wide range of applications. In cases of inaccessibility to labs, workshops, or industries, as happened before in the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, these tools could be effectively integrated with practical lab experiments. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation and a VR module were utilized to simulate heat transfer by conduction through various experimental cases. The CFD simulation results were obtained using ANSYS/FLUENT software. Meantime, the experimental data were obtained by carrying out three experiments of heat conduction with different heat transfer rates through simple, composite, and different cross‐sectional area bars. At last, the experimental procedure and devices used were virtually constructed using SolidWorks software as three‐dimensional models, which were then extruded into VR and augmented reality models. It was found that the simulation results closely align with the experimental ones, and the temperature profile in both cases has the same behavior with small differences, which indicates the validity of the developed module to be used as a simulation of the actual experiments. In addition to improving knowledge of heat transfer principles, this combination of simulation and VR technology advances many Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including advancing quality education (SDG 4) and innovation in higher education (SDG 9). Additionally, this method assists in achieving the course learning objectives by mimicking real‐world lab experiments, guaranteeing that students graduate from the course with the required information and abilities.

The Effect of Employee Involvement Participation in Directive Decision Making and its Impact on Employees Creativity: A Case Study of Higher Education in Oman

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how the private higher education sector in Oman is adapting to global trends and industrial partnerships to prepare students for the workforce. Specifically, it aims to explore the relationship between employee involvement in participation, directorial decision-making, and employee innovation in this context, and how these factors contribute to differentiating institutions in a competitive environment. Method: This study employs quantitative analysis to investigate the relationships between employee involvement, directed decision-making, and innovation within Oman's private higher education sector. Through the use of surveys and statistical methods, the study explores how directorial decision-making moderates the link between employee involvement and creativity. Results and Conclusion: The findings suggest that directorial decision-making plays a significant moderating role in the relationship between employee involvement and creativity. All proposed hypotheses were supported, indicating a positive correlation between employee participation in decision-making processes and innovation. These results underscore the importance of directorial strategies that encourage employee involvement as a catalyst for creativity within the sector. Originality/Value: This study contributes uniquely to the body of knowledge on employee creativity in the private higher education industry by highlighting the critical role of leadership decision-making styles in fostering an innovative work environment. It provides empirical evidence supporting the need for policy reforms that encourage participative decision-making processes, thereby enhancing the sector's competitiveness and its ability to meet the demands of the global workforce. Through its insights, the study offers a foundation for further research and policy development aimed at nurturing innovation in higher education.

STUDENTS' PERSPECTIVES ON CHATGPT: AN EXPLORATION OF PERCEPTIONS

This master's thesis represents a meticulous scholarly endeavor meticulously crafted to illuminate the multifaceted perspectives of Indian students enrolled in MBA, B.Tech, BBA, and B.Com programs regarding the integration of ChatGPT within the academic landscape. Positioned at the intersection of technology and education, this research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of students' viewpoints, experiences, and perceptions concerning ChatGPT—an advanced language model renowned for its potential to revolutionize learning environments. Adopting a meticulous mixed-methods research approach, this study embarks on a journey to delve into the intricate nuances of students' interactions with ChatGPT, encompassing facets such as usability, impact on learning experiences, and overall satisfaction. Through meticulously structured surveys and in-depth interviews meticulously tailored to capture the diverse array of perspectives held by students, the research methodically collects and analyzes data to unveil the underlying factors shaping students' perceptions. By rigorously examining the data gleaned from these methodologies, the study aspires to unravel the complexities inherent in students' engagement with ChatGPT, thereby offering invaluable insights into the implications of its integration into the Indian higher education landscape. Picturing innovation in higher education: A photovoice study of innovative pedagogies

How popularising higher education affects economic growth and poverty alleviation: empirical evidence from 38 countries

The popularisation of higher education supports UNESCO’s aim of developing inclusive and equitable quality education to achieve the fourth Sustainable Development Goal. However, the effect of popularising higher education on economic growth and poverty alleviation remains unexplored. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of higher education and adult education within populations (popularisation of higher education) on economic growth (gross domestic product; GDP) and the poverty line using panel data from 38 countries. OLS and quantile regression were performed using data for the period 1995–2021 extracted from the OECD and World Bank databases. The results showed that the population segments with higher education had a significantly positive impact on GDP growth. Moreover, an increased proportion of the population with higher education, of working age, was found to be a contributing factor to GDP growth. Popularising higher education also played a positive role during the initial stage of social and economic development. This study also highlighted that popularising higher education play a key role to influence a country’s educational development and scientific and technological innovation drives the deepening of a country’s economy. It suggested that both national and local governments worldwide should pay much attention to the popularisation degree of higher education to greatly improve the innovative ability of talents and scientific and technological innovation in higher education for both the economic growth and poverty alleviation.

Development of a Scale of Skills in Teaching Work and Innovation in University Education

This study aimed to validate a scale for subjectively measuring teaching competencies for innovation in higher education. The scale was developed by creating a set of items that underwent content validity through the Delphi technique and face validity. A survey was then conducted with 523 higher education professors. The resulting scale, called the STW-ICE Scale, consists of four dimensions: continuing education, creativity, digital fluency, and scientificity. We found that the scale has psychometric properties that allow for subjective measurement of the proposed competencies. The SmartPLS and SPSS software were used for data assessment. Additionally, we found high levels of teaching skills in the sample for all dimensions. Based on these findings, this study successfully achieved its goal of developing and validating a scale. We hope that this scale will be used not only for classificatory diagnoses but also to encourage reflection on teaching practices in higher education with a focus on innovation.

The Role and Responsibilities of Academic Leaders in Effectuating Quality, Impact, and Excellence by Innovation in Higher Education

<p>Innovation is critical for higher education in the 21st century. It can improve teaching and learning, increase research quality and impact, solve social problems, and bring more funding and collaboration. It can also boost the happiness and creativity of staff and students, who can follow their interests, try new things, and work with different people. But innovation is not simple. It requires a positive and supportive culture, a clear and shared vision, a strong and effective leadership, and a regular and systematic evaluation. This seeks to review the existing research on innovation in higher education, analyze and discuss how academic leaders can encourage and enable innovation in higher education, and to further provide some helpful and evidence-based suggestions for academic leaders and practitioners who want to innovate in higher education.</p>

TYPES OF INNOVATIONS IN THE SPHERE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

The work is devoted to the study of the main types of innovations in the sphere of higher education. The following types of innovations are considered: innovations of technological and organizational type; innovations of educational and pedagogical type; innovations of structural and pedagogical type; innovations of economic and market type. Also analyzed innovative information technologies, information and innovation management, as well as innovative marketing are widely used in the management of innovative activities in education. They are combined into a group of means and tools for managing innovative activities in education. They can occur in almost all types of innovations in the education system, which can lead to innovative changes to achieve new quantitative and qualitative education parameters. The analysis in the article of some types of innovations in the higher education system shows that they can lead to innovative changes. These are organizational-type innovations in the field of higher education; educational and pedagogical innovations in the higher education system; means and tools for managing innovative activities in education; innovations to solve problems of forced or emergency distance learning, etc. Also are important innovations in higher education related to the protection of life on Earth (environmental, resource-saving and alternative fuels, food security, health care, population control, etc.), as well as new types of innovations in higher education and science caused by global changes, extraordinary and force majeure circumstances. The authors argue that the prospect of building a knowledge society with an innovation-oriented type of economy in any country requires a profound reform of the national economy humanitarian sphere, innovative development of higher education system, science and scientific-technology activity. This should be done on the basis of reasonable combination of the best foreign experience with national traditions. The results of the research can be useful both for specialists in the field of higher education and science, as well as for students, postgraduates, and researchers in the field of innovative activity and innovative development.

Service-Learning as a niche innovation in higher education for sustainability

Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a framework proposed by UNESCO to develop knowledge, skills, values, and behaviors in youth for sustainable development. As part of the global development agenda, higher educational institutions are expected to integrate ESD into their curricula. Service-Learning is a type of experiential learning in which students combine academic coursework with community service which is aligned with the learning objectives of their academic program. In light of the global trend, our paper investigates how universities are responding to this call through the introduction of Service-Learning programs. First, a comprehensive review of UN documents presents the background and structure of ESD. Second, a systematic review of the academic literature analyses how Service-Learning is being introduced in higher educational institutes. Key findings are that Service-Learning programs align with most of the UNESCO framework components, but higher education institutions are finding it challenging to implement them. Educators play a pivotal role in implementation, and unless they are trained and incentivized and this is systematized, not only Service-Learning but also ESD may fail to transform learning environments. Furthermore, there is a need for impact evaluation, particularly in terms of key sustainability competences. The three major challenges are insufficient educator capacity, funding, and educator attitudes. These challenges can be addressed through university-based projects addressing local problems that have a visible impact, as well as collaboration with local communities, other institutions and, social enterprises.

Local community development and higher education institutions: Moving from the triple helix to the quadruple helix model

This article examines issues of local community development in Rwanda, building on the triple helix model proposed by Henry Etzkowitz and Loet Leydesdorff in the 1990s to draw insights from international perspectives. The authors favour an expanded quadruple helix model which includes the local community as a unit of analysis, alongside higher education institutions (HEIs), the private sector and government. In this fourfold model, the local community is identified as an additional helix based on the idea that HEIs can serve as engines for boosting economic development. The results of the authors’ analysis show that innovations in higher education which are directed towards community development can, in turn, lead to changes in existing practices and teaching to better reflect the needs of the local community as well as the broader community beyond the immediate context of HEIs. Graduates’ employable skills can be strengthened through outreach initiatives by HEIs, along with the collaborative support of all elements in the fourfold model. The authors’ review of relevant literature and policy documents goes further to illustrate how each element can play an optimal role in forming a strong and sustainable partnership at the local level. The robust cooperation among helices in this model may lead to higher rates of graduates’ employment in a knowledge-based society. These innovations can further lead to full alleviation of poverty, starting from the sphere of local community development.

Transformation and digital challenges in Peru during the COVID-19 pandemic, in the educational sector between 2020 and 2023: Systematic Review

Introduction: Digital transformation in the Peruvian educational sector has experienced a significant boost after facing the COVID-19 pandemic. During the period between 2020 and 2023, various innovative methods have been implemented to ensure the continuity of the academic year.Objective: Explain how the digital transformation was carried out in the Peruvian educational sector after facing the COVID-19 pandemic to the present (2020 – 2023).Method: Examples from many institutions, statistical studies and scientific and technological references were taken into account to achieve the objective. Throughout this work we are analyzing the different and innovative methods used by teachers to provide continuity to the academic year and how digital challenges were overcome.Results: 78 documents from Scopus and Scielo were reviewed, leaving 62 after filtering. These cover 8 categories on the impact of the pandemic on education, the transition to online teaching, job skills, challenges and advantages of virtual education, innovation in higher education, educational evaluation in virtual environments, educational internationalization and challenges for teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic.Conclusions: In conclusion, the digital transformation in the Peruvian educational sector after the COVID-19 pandemic has been fundamental to guarantee the continuity of the teaching-learning process.

For quality education, the main criteria for selecting means of organizing the educational process are recognized; basic didactic and specific principles. Positive features of modern education are emphasized. Finding effective ways to improve higher education, is considered a factor of the global informatization process. A survey of students of various specialties in institutions of higher education was conducted to find out the key traditions of global quality training of future competitive specialists in the innovative process of higher education. The prospects for the growth of modern education and the ways and means of education, which allow for a complete restructuring of the educational sector, improve and even change the educational process, are considered. The essence of today's most accessible and effective online education projects is revealed.

INTRODUCTION AND RESEARCH PURPOSE: This research stems from the increasing importance of innovation in higher education and the growing role of virtual connections and collaborative initiatives in shaping the global educational landscape. Building upon prior research in this field, this study aims to provide a comprehensive exploration of how these elements come together to create a more interconnected and inclusive world of education. The central question addressed in this study is: How can innovation in higher education, particularly through virtual connections and collaborative initiatives like VEHUB4YOU, contribute to bridging educational gaps and fostering global unity? To investigate this question, we examine the objectives, methods, and impact of VEHUB4YOU as the subject of our study.
 HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis of this research anticipates that innovations in higher education, aimed at using virtual connections and collaborative initiatives, particularly through programs like VEHUB4YOU, have the potential to create a more interconnected and inclusive world of education. We assume that such initiatives not only enhance accessibility and the quality of education but also stimulate innovation, promote knowledge exchange, and foster collaboration among educational institutions, contributing to global unity and the development of the educational sector.
 RESEARCH METHODS: The research employs a qualitative approach, including a review of existing literature, case studies, and interviews with key participants involved in VEHUB4YOU. This multifaceted methodology allows us to gather comprehensive insights into the program's objectives, implementation, and its impact on higher education within the African context.
 RESULTS: The study uncovers multifaceted aspects of innovation in higher education, highlighting the evolution of virtual connections in overcoming geographical barriers. It investigates collaborative initiatives as driving forces for positive change, facilitating the creation of inclusive and diverse learning environments. The case of VEHUB4YOU demonstrates how such programs assist educational institutions and individuals in joining global educational networks, thereby enhancing accessibility, fostering collaboration, and driving innovation.
 CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this research underscores the transformative potential of innovation, virtual connections, and collaborative initiatives in higher education. VEHUB4YOU in Africa serves as an example of how such initiatives can overcome barriers, promote global unity, and contribute to the creation of a more interconnected world of education. The study encourages further research and the implementation of innovative approaches in higher education to ensure accessibility, relevance, and the impact of education in an increasingly interconnected world.

Digital Citizenship Education in Higher Education: A Study in Indian Perspective

In recent years, higher education in India has undergone significant changes and advancements, particularly with the integration of technology and innovation into the learning process. With the increasing use of digital tools and platforms, individuals must understand the responsibilities and ethics associated with the use of technology. This is where digital citizenship education comes into play. In the context of higher education, digital citizenship education can play a crucial role in preparing students to become responsible and informed digital citizens. The purpose of this study is to examine the technological innovation in higher education in India, with a special emphasis on digital citizenship education, and to analyse the factors that influence its integration. The study aims to provide insights into the challenges and opportunities related to the implementation of digital citizenship education in Indian universities and to make recommendations for its effective integration into the higher education curriculum.

The effect of social media use on organizational performance and innovation in private higher education

Higher education is currently facing a myriad of complex and diverse challenges. Increasing global competition, rapid developments in educational technology, and mounting pressures related to cost management and financing are factors that can significantly impact the higher education landscape. The aim of this research is to analyze the extent to which social media use can enhance organizational performance, ultimately influencing the organization's ability to foster innovation. This study employs a quantitative approach, collecting data through a questionnaire distributed to 205 respondents, consisting of faculty members working in private universities in Bandung, Indonesia. The questionnaire is designed using a 7-point Likert scale and distributed through an online survey platform. The research findings indicate that social media use has a positive and significant relationship with organizational performance and innovation performance in higher education. These findings are reinforced by the mediating role of organizational performance, explaining a significant portion of the positive influence of social media on innovation performance. The implications of these findings provide a foundation for universities to optimize the use of social media as a strategic tool in achieving performance goals and fostering innovation in the higher education environment.

Enabling and constraining causal powers for research and innovation in the South African higher education

This article highlights the critical importance of research and innovation in higher education, using South Africa (SA) as a case study. It analyses discourses that enable and constrain research and innovation. Margaret Archer’s social realist theory and stratified construct of structure, culture and agency is employed to understand various emerging transformation discourses exerting enabling or constraining causal powers for research and innovation. The interplay between structural, cultural, and agential milieus is investigated to better understand the urgency towards research and innovation. With this understanding, academics might locate their agency in the global and local contexts, create ideal conditions and build corporate agency for strengthening research and innovation. Universities with limited resources, should not reinvent what already exists, but should responsibly borrow key aspects that would thrive in their own contexts. However, it must be cautioned that no system of the world can exist as an end without deficits and flaws.
