Traditional culture of settlements associated with the natural environment: the case of Yi minority Southwest China

ABSTRACT Traditional culture of settlement is an important medium to record the process of balance between human and nature, and it was passed down from generation to generation in different forms (e.g. sacrificial culture, social structure, belief worship). With the intensification of global multicultural integration, the integration relationship between culture and nature has become an important approach for the protection and inheritance of traditional culture. Now, the relationship between artistic creation and ecological environment has been extensively studied. The scientific consensus regarding the influence of ecological environment on artistic creation has gained widespread recognition. Nevertheless, previous research neglects the relationship of traditional culture and natural environment, as well as different spatial characteristics, which are closely related to agricultural production and living. Based on the in-depth investigation of 23 traditional settlements of Yi minority in Southwest China, this paper conducted spatial analysis based on aerial photography, satellite maps and field investigation to analyze the relationship of culture-environment-space. Our results showed that there are significant differences in settlement space (e.g. landscape pattern, landscape space, architectural form) of Yi minority distributed in different areas. Under the same cultural background, the dispersed layout appears in Liangshan with high altitude and cold climate; the mountain foot layout appears in Central Yunnan and Northwest Guizhou with flat terrain and mild climate; the centralized layout appears in Honghe with narrow valleys and hot climate. These results shows that traditional culture comes from the natural environment, and the settlement space built under the guidance of the traditional culture must be in harmony with the natural environment. Therefore, protecting the traditional culture plays an important role in the sustainable development of urban and rural settlements. In addition, our findings may serve to inheritance and protection of traditional culture in other area all over the world.

Innovative Application of Traditional Chinese Opera Elements in Modern Dramatic Costume Design

In the field of drama, especially in clothing design, designers are actively exploring how to combine traditional opera elements with modern drama to create clothing images that are both rich in traditional charm and in line with contemporary audience aesthetics. This innovation not only inherits traditional culture, but also challenges and extends modern aesthetics. Traditional Chinese opera elements, as an important component of Chinese culture, provide rich inspiration and materials for modern drama costume design with their unique symbolic meanings and aesthetic characteristics. The article conducts research on the innovative application of traditional Chinese opera elements in modern theatrical costume design, in order to enrich theatrical images and provide new paths and possibilities for the dissemination and inheritance of traditional culture in contemporary society.

An analysis of the development path of ethnic villages under the protection of traditional Jiarong culture

Most of the villages in the north-west ethnic areas of Sichuan are located within a culturally rich zone. However, during the process of village modernization, the protection and inheritance of traditional culture are often overlooked. This study has investigated the construction techniques and spatial components of traditional villages in Lixian, Sichuan Province, from the perspective of cultural inheritance. It analyzes and synthesizes representative design language and proposes a design concept that combines spatial perspective and cultural inheritance to conduct research on design paths aimed at strengthening functional positioning, optimizing spatial layout, improving village style, and improving infrastructure. The objective is to establish a research path to maintain the village-style during post-disaster process reconstruction and village development, thus protecting the unique local architectural culture and achieving comprehensive village development. In addition, we explored issues such as the lack of architectural style and the lagging development of human settlements, aiming to promote rural revitalization and integrated urban-rural development in this area.

The Extraction of Roof Feature Lines of Traditional Chinese Village Buildings Based on UAV Dense Matching Point Clouds

Traditional Chinese buildings serve as a carrier for the inheritance of traditional culture and national characteristics. In the context of rural revitalization, achieving the 3D reconstruction of traditional village buildings is a crucial technical approach to promoting rural planning, improving living environments, and establishing digital villages. However, traditional algorithms primarily target urban buildings, exhibiting limited adaptability and less ideal feature extraction performance for traditional residential buildings. As a result, guaranteeing the accuracy and reliability of 3D models for different types of traditional buildings remains challenging. In this paper, taking Jingping Village in Western Hunan as an example, we propose a method that combines multiple algorithms based on the slope segmentation of the roof to extract feature lines. Firstly, the VDVI and CSF algorithms are used to extract the building and roof point clouds based on the MVS point cloud. Secondly, according to roof features, village buildings are classified, and a 3D roof point cloud is projected into 2D regular grid data. Finally, the roof slope is segmented via slope direction, and internal and external feature lines are obtained after refinement through Canny edge detection and Hough straight line detection. The results indicate that the CSF algorithm can effectively extract the roofs of I-shaped, L-shaped, and U-shaped traditional buildings. The accuracy of roof surface segmentation based on slope exceeds 99.6%, which is significantly better than the RANSAC algorithm and the region segmentation algorithm. This method is capable of efficiently extracting the characteristic lines of roofs in low-rise buildings within traditional villages. It provides a reference method for achieving the high-precision modeling of traditional village architecture at a low cost and with high efficiency.

Research on the Logical Direction of Traditional Culture Inheritance and Promotion in the Internet Era

Abstract China’s traditional cultural heritage is facing serious challenges under the impact of modern culture. The somatosensory interaction gestures for cultural relics are designed using the Kinect somatosensory interaction model in this paper. The appearance of virtual cultural relics can be designed and realized using a three-dimensional coordinate system. Combined with the method of digital projection, the interaction projection generated by the Kinect somatic interaction model is corrected by the geometric correction method, and the edge fusion algorithm is applied to correct and fuse the edges of the corrected virtual artifact appearance. Testing the effects of cultural inheritance and promotion in the 38 regions of the application is carried out through the application of the cultural relics interaction. According to the findings, the highest score for traditional culture inheritance among the 38 regions is 28.36, and four regions have inheritance scores above 20 points. In traditional culture promotion, the highest score region is close to 12 points, and the heritage interaction experience can make users feel the inherent culture of the heritage, which has a positive effect on traditional culture inheritance and promotion.

The significance and value of living and regionalizing the aesthetic education curriculum on the topic of Jing Chu culture

Abstract This study explores the significance and value of the living and regionalization of Jing-Chu culture in the aesthetic education curriculum, strengthens the combination of regional cultural characteristics and modern aesthetic education, and explores the new value and direction of cultural education in contemporary times. Through quantitative and qualitative analysis, we study Jing Chu culture’s aesthetic education function and digital transformation. We use questionnaire survey, experimental analysis and literature research methods to focus on the aesthetic education elements of Jing-Chu culture and its application in modern education. Elements such as myths, sorcery, and Chu Rhetoric in Jing and Chu culture have a new vitality in the digital environment. Through the questionnaire analysis of 50 art majors, it was found that 90% of the students believed that the elements of Jing-Chu culture enriched their artistic creation and aesthetic experience, and the application of Jing-Chu cultural primitives in the digital teaching environment significantly enhanced the students’ sense of identification with the culture and their motivation to create. The living and regionalization of Jing Chu culture not only enriches the connotation of the aesthetic education curriculum, but also provides new ideas for the inheritance of traditional culture. Art educators are encouraged to dig deeper into the value of Jing Chu culture to bring innovation and vitality to the contemporary aesthetic education curriculum.

Research on the development strategy of integration of Chinese traditional culture and tourism development oriented to a matrix model

Abstract Based on its evolutionary history, this paper explores the different manifestations of traditional culture in tourism development. The matrix decomposition of the spatial elements of tourism development is used to study the coupling relationship between tourism space and traditional culture. Finally, the evaluation index system of the tourism development degree is constructed, and the two-dimensional matrix model is used to realize the integration measurement of traditional culture inheritance and tourism development. In the empirical study, the evaluation index of cultural industry development in Liaoning province increased year by year from 2011 to 2020, reaching a stage peak of 0.623189 in 2015, and the coupling degree of the culture and tourism industry in Liaoning province was greater than 0.92. The measurement model established in this study effectively promotes the integrated development of traditional culture tourism.

Renovation of Traditional Residential Buildings in Lijiang Based on AHP-QFD Methodology: A Case Study of the Wenzhi Village

The rapid growth of tourism has led to the transformation of numerous traditional dwellings in Yunnan into commercial lodgings, presenting a challenge to the preservation and inheritance of traditional culture. However, the existing renovation practices lack scientific data support and rely heavily on architects’ subjective designs. Thus, finding a scientific and stable approach to maintain the traditional residential characteristics becomes crucial. This study focuses on the renovation of Wenzhi villagers’ residences in Yunnan as a case study. It employs the innovative AHP-QFD design methodology to explore a more scientific and objective method for preserving and promoting the features of traditional dwellings in commercial renovations. Initially, the study assigns weights to the commercial renovation objectives—local traditional features, architectural functions, sustainability, and comfort—using the hierarchical analysis method (AHP). Subsequently, specific design features are derived from transformation requirements through interviews and questionnaires with residents, tourists, government officials, and experts. The innovation of this research lies in the application of AHP and QFD models to the innovative design of commercial renovations for traditional dwellings in Yunnan, resulting in a set of systematic and scientifically supported decision-making methods for renovating and preserving traditional buildings in the region. The study’s findings reveal that building geometry and dimensions, skilled traditional craftsmanship, and flexible and expandable solutions carry the highest weight in design. The application of the AHP-QFD model in commercial transformation design effectively balances the preservation of traditional culture and the pursuit of commercial value. It offers a feasible and innovative design solution for commercial transformations of traditional houses in the Yunnan region, ensuring the preservation of cultural heritage while enhancing commercial appeal.

This paper reveals the differences and connections between the artistic expression and creative concepts of the Ming and Qing dynasties by comparing the artistic languages of the Ming and contemporary realistic flower and bird paintings. The pictorial flower and bird paintings of the Ming and Qing dynasties emphasize traditional techniques such as color, composition, line and brushwork, highlighting the profound poetry and mood. By analyzing the works of artists such as Zhu Da and Zheng Banqiao, these works unite their admiration for nature and reflection on life. In contrast, contemporary realistic flower and bird paintings are infused with more modern elements based on tradition, using bold colors, compositions and lines, and emphasizing individuality and creativity. The creations of artists such as Xu Beihong and Wu Guanzhong highlight their unique interpretations of contemporary society and personal emotions. The contrast between the Ming and the Qing Dynasties and the Contemporary not only highlights the differences in artistic language, forms of expression, and creative philosophies, but also the commonalities between the two periods in terms of innovation and personal expression. This study aims to: (1) identify the supporting and inhibiting geographical components of the tie-woven business in Tiwurana Village, (2) find out the production process of the tie-woven business in Tiwurana Village and (3) find out the contribution of the results of the tie-woven business in Tiwurana Village. The method used in this research is descriptive quantitative. Sources of data in this study include primary and secondary data obtained through interviews, observation and documentation study. Respondents in the study were woven craftsmen with a population of 20 woven craftsmen and the sample used a non-probability sampling technique with all populations as samples. Quantitative descriptive data analysis used frequency tables. The results of this study are: (1) in the form of geographic components supporting the woven textile business; the physical environment (soil and climate), the human environment (labor) and the accessibility of the local area, (2) the geographical components that inhibit the woven textile business; human environment (lack of capital, labor, lack of marketing breadth) physical environment in the form of climate change, (3) the production process of woven weaving learns various stages. such as the arrangement of threads for making motifs, coloring, washing, drying, arranging threads after drying, weaving and using non-natural factory raw materials because they are difficult to obtain, (4) the contribution of the results of woven fabrics; these products are sold in the market to meet daily needs, in addition to that as the inheritance of traditional culture during marriage death
