ABSTRACT This study explores the effects of domestic visitors’ place attachment and environmental responsibility awareness on pro-environmental behaviors at Biokovo Nature Park, Croatia. Leveraging the Norm Activation Model (NAM), it identifies essential mechanisms by which emotional and cognitive connections with nature drive sustainable action. Findings reveal that place attachment influences awareness of environmental responsibility, which in turn shapes pro-environmental behaviors. The investigation underscores the critical role of environmental responsibility awareness in mediating the relationship between place attachment and pro-environmental behaviors, suggesting that omitting this factor could lead to overestimating the influence of place attachment. By illuminating the psychological processes underpinning conservation-oriented actions in protected areas, the research advocates for management strategies prioritizing visitor engagement in environmental responsibility, thereby enhancing sustainability efforts.

Being there: How sensory impressions influence tourists' pro-environmental behaviors

The significance of the sensory aspect in the tourism experience process for fostering pro-environmental behaviors (PEBs) among tourists at the destination is well-acknowledged. However, the existing literature remains scant. This study endeavors to explore the impact of tourists' sensory impressions on their PEBs, from the perspective of the tourism destination. Given the fluctuations in the natural surroundings, we use daily green behaviors (DGBs) as a moderating factor to scrutinize the influence of PEBs on trip alterations. The findings reveal that the role of sensory impressions is not merely substantial in directly affecting visitors' PEBs, but also significantly influences PEBs through the mediating roles of place attachment and connectedness to nature. Tourists engaging in daily green behaviors in their habitual environments are found to augment the influence of place attachment on pro-environmental conduct within tourist locales. Additionally, tourists partaking in DGBs are more likely to enhance the impact of connectedness to nature in destinations on PEBs than tourists who do not engage in DGBs. This research enriches the extant body of knowledge on PEBs by rendering a more holistic insight into how sensory impressions might impact the PEBs of visitors and delineating the specific conditions under which this influence transpires.

The influence of place attachment and emotional solidarity on residents’ involvement in tourism: perspectives from Orlando, Florida

PurposeUsing the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model as a theoretical guide, this study employed a conceptual model involving residents’ place attachment (S) to the destination in which they live and emotional solidarity with tourists (O) as precursors to their involvement in tourism (R). The purpose of this paper is threefold: To determine (1) whether residents’ place attachment explains their emotional solidarity with tourists, (2) if emotional solidarity is an effective predictor of residents’ involvement in tourism planning and development and (3) if emotional solidarity dimensions mediate the relationship between place attachment and involvement.Design/methodology/approachData were collected from 378 permanent resident heads of households living in, or adjacent to, central Orlando, using a self-administered survey with a census-guided systematic sampling method. Data were subjected to tests of normality and common method bias, followed by a two-step confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling.FindingsSeven of the 11 proposed model hypotheses were supported, with moderate variances explained in each of the four outcome variables: welcoming nature (R2 = 19.3%), emotional closeness (R2 = 24.5%), sympathetic understanding (R2 = 39.4%) and involvement (R2 = 36.8%). Though both place identity and place dependence (as two dimensions of place attachment) were partial mediators, the former proved to be more pronounced.Originality/valueThis study employed non-economic measures—place attachment and emotional solidarity—in determining residents’ involvement in tourism within their community. Such an approach provides fresh insights into how such symbolic constructs can contribute to residents’ positive, actionable involvement in tourism. This research is one of the few that have incorporated emotional solidarity as a construct within the SOR model and the first to examine the indirect effects (through mediation) of emotional solidarity.

The impact of tourist engagement on low–carbon behavior in glacier tourism

Over the last decade, glaciers have gained increasing popularity as tourist destinations while experiencing rapid retreat due to climate change. The accelerated glacial recession worldwide calls for carbon reduction and sustainable glacier conservation and management. To this end, simply prohibiting tourists from visiting may not be as effective, comparing to engaging them through innovative means to promote pro-environmental behavior. This paper examined factors that influence tourists’ low-carbon behavior while on-site and after their visits to glaciers through two studies (Study 1 – on-site visitor survey; Study 2 – a scenario experiment using glacier virtual reality games). Results showed that tourist engagement positively influenced their low-carbon behavior, but was mediated by the sequential influence of place attachment and environmental responsibility. The perceived threat of glacier shrinkage moderated this relationship. Results also provide practical implications for sustainable tourism management at glacier destinations and beyond.

Is too small always bad? the role of place attachment in harnessing location advantages

Despite the economic significance of micro-enterprises, the empirical evidence on the contextual factors unlocking their growth potential is somewhat scant. This study pitches into this stream of research by linking micro-enterprises, agglomeration economies, and place attachment literature. Specifically, this research explores whether micro-enterprises benefit the most from the location in agglomerations and from having a local manager in charge of the business capturing the connections to the immediate surroundings. By drawing on secondary data from Italian manufacturing companies, our findings show that micro-enterprises are less productive than the larger ones and that having a local manager further exacerbates the productivity gap. However, the influence of place attachment on productivity reverts to positive when micro-enterprises dwell in agglomerated areas, where they are better positioned to capitalize on localization economies. Our study unveils the ambivalent effect of place attachment on productivity, allowing micro-enterprises mainly to achieve higher productivity gains from agglomerations. Theoretical contributions to contextualizing entrepreneurship research and micro-enterprises growth as well as policy and managerial implications are discussed.

Place Attachment, Self-Efficacy, and Farmers’ Farmland Quality Protection Behavior: Evidence from China

Farmland pollution severely threatens humanity’s sustainable development. Exploring farmland quality protection behavior (FQPB) from the farmers’ perspective is considered one of the best ways to solve the farmland pollution problem. This study develops a theoretical framework for farmers’ FQPB from the perspectives of place attachment (consisting of place identity, dependency, and affection) and self-efficacy. We conducted a primary survey of 412 corn farmers from the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu and empirically examined the effects of place attachment and self-efficacy on farmers’ FQPB and verified the moderating effects that self-efficacy exerts on the influence of place attachment on FQPB by using hierarchical regression and propensity score matching models. The results indicate that: (1) among the three dimensions of place attachment, farmers with stronger place identity and place affection are more likely to implement FQPB; conversely, farmers who exhibit stronger place dependency are less likely to engage FQPB; and (2) self-efficacy not only effectively promotes farmers’ FQPB but also has an enhancing effect on the influence of place identity and place affection on FQPB. Our results suggest that policymakers should encourage farmers to maintain a place’s image and guide farmers to participate in place construction; thus, farmers’ place identity and place affection can be fostered. Meanwhile, the government should diversify the income sources of farmers to reduce their dependency on a single source. The finding that self-efficacy effectively promotes FQPB also implied that the formulation of farmland quality protection policies should shift from traditional command-based policies to participatory approaches, utilizing the initiative of farmers to enhance the policy’s effectiveness, which can not only promote farmers’ FQPB through self-efficacy but also strengthen the positive influence of place identity and place affection on FQPB.

The Influence of Place Attachment on Farmers’ Succession Plans: A Mixed Methods Study

A farm family’s land succession plan is vital to ensure that high-value farmland continues to benefit the family for generations to come. However, many farmers have been reluctant to develop succession plans. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of place attachment on farmers’ land succession planning. This exploratory mixed methods research involved farmers within 10 years of retirement age (55 years of age or older), both with and without a land succession plan. Surveys and interviews utilized Raymond, Brown, and Weber’s (2010) five dimensions of place attachment: place identity, place dependence, nature bonding, family bonding, and friend bonding. Survey results showed farmers with a succession plan had significantly higher place identity, place dependence, nature bonding, and overall place attachment than farmers without a succession plan. Seven themes emerged from the qualitative analysis of interviews of farmers with a succession plan and six themes emerged from interviews of farmers without a succession plan. Three themes: connection to family, sense of community, and enjoyment of the outdoors were held in common. This study adds to the literature exploring the complex factors affecting the transition of the family farm to the next generation.

The Influence of Place Attachment on Heritage Discourse in Contemporary Places: A Case Study of Jordanian Byzantine Mosaics

This study looks at the influence of place attachment on heritage discourse in contemporary places, specifically, Byzantine mosaics in Jordan, where the Byzantine Empire left behind a rich mosaic heritage. Today, these mosaics are replicated in contemporary architectural environments. The purpose of this article is to explore the heritage discourse surrounding Byzantine mosaics in Jordanian contemporary places with a particular focus on the replication and interpretation of the mosaics in contemporary places. To do that, the relationship between the attachments to the Byzantine mosaic places, the community’s level of awareness, and the replicated heritage discourse was examined. The research was conducted using several different methods, where structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to examine the relationship between these factors. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to assess the measurement models of the latent components and examine their construct validity and reliability. In addition, the study was conducted in Madaba Archaeological Park in the Jordanian city of Madaba, known as the “city of mosaics”, which is rich in tourism and culture, as a subject of study. The results show that the phenomena of heritage replications in contemporary places rely on the expanding interest in history, which is manifested through realizing the historical value and unique features of heritage. This attachment, knowledge, and understanding of heritage sites based on socio-cultural norms help shape the discourse of heritage replication in the contemporary built environment. These findings provide an understanding of the reasons behind the replication behavior of heritage designs in contemporary places, which can be supported in future research and used to create an appropriate contemporary sense of place. In addition to the possibility of using it as a strategy for the sustainability of heritage designs in local culture and contemporary places, not only in Jordan but also in other heritage environments, finally, some useful suggestions emerge on which future research can be based.

The Effect of Place Attachment On The Satisfaction and Loyalty of Tourists Visiting The Coffee Shop In Kintamani, Bangli Regency, Bali

The COVID-19 pandemic has been happening since 2019, and the tourism industry is one of the affected industries. Bali is one of the affected places because most of the people work in the tourism industry, but on the other hand when the Covid-19 pandemic takes place there is one place in Bali that is still crowded with tour-ists. Kintamani is one of the places that is still crowded with tourists, especially at the coffee shop in Kintamani, because it has beautiful and exotic views of the lake and Mount Batur. This study aims to find out whether there is an influence of place attachment that makes tourists loyal apart from satisfaction. The data col-lection technique in this study used a questionnaire, then the sample determina-tion technique used purposive sampling, namely determining respondents based on certain criteria, in this study the sample referred to was tourists who had vis-ited the coffee shop in Kinatamani at least 2 times. The data analysis technique used in this research is descriptive quantitative, then hypothesis testing using smart PLS software. The results of this study concluded that based on the t test, the t-statistical value obtained from each varibel has a value of more than 1.98 which is the standard value of measuring the significance of the t-statistical influ-ence of each variable in this study, which means that there is a positive direct influence between place attachment (X) on satisfaction (Y1), satisfaction (Y1) on loyalty (Y2), place attachment (X) to loyalty (Y2) and the indirect influence that satisfaction (Y1) is able to mediate place attachemnt (X) and loyalty (Y2).

The Effects of Place Attachment and Emotional Solidarity on Community Residents’ Attitudes toward Glacier Tourism

The perceptions and attitudes of community residents are a “mirror” of tourism development. Little research has been conducted on the effects of place attachment and emotional solidarity on community residents’ attitudes toward tourism in China’s glacier tourism-related areas. In this paper, we selected the southernmost marine glacier in China, Hailuogou Glacier Forest Park, as a case study, and constructed a structural equation model of residents’ tourism perceptions and attitudes based on 358 valid questionnaires obtained from fieldwork. We analyzed the logical connection and influencing relationship between place attachment, residents’ perceptions (residents’ benefits and environmental perceptions), and community residents’ attitudes (security, support, satisfaction), and explored countermeasures and suggestions for building a harmonious host–customer relationship in the Hailuogou area to improve glacier tourism. The results of the study show that the influence of place attachment and residents’ perceptions on emotional solidarity is different from the degree of influence of emotional solidarity on residents’ tourism attitudes, with the most significant positive influence of place attachment on emotional solidarity and the greatest influence of emotional solidarity on sense of security. Emotional solidarity had a certain mediating effect between place attachment, residents’ perceptions, and residents’ tourism attitudes. Significantly, emotional solidarity had the most fully mediated effect between place attachment and support, reaching 73.61%. The moderating effect of place attachment reflects that the higher the place attachment, the weaker the correlation between residents’ perceptions and residents’ tourism attitudes. Meanwhile, residents’ tourism attitudes will weaken their influence with the increase in emotional solidarity. Based on the above results, relevant suggestions are made to provide a theoretical basis and decision-making reference for the development and management of glacier tourism destinations.

Critical Influences on Responsible Tourism Behavior and the Mediating Role of Ambivalent Emotions

This research employed a behavioral model to confirm and elucidate the critical influence of place attachment, destination involvement, and ambivalent emotion on responsible tourism behaviors. A total of 415 questionnaires were collected from tourists visiting Penghu Island in Taiwan. Following data analysis using structural equation modeling, the results suggested that place attachment, destination involvement, and ambivalent emotion critically impact responsible tourism behaviors, and that place attachment is negatively related to ambivalent emotion. In addition, ambivalent emotion was found to mediate the relationship between place attachment and responsible tourism behaviors. Finally, implications for the promotion of sustainable tourism development were thoughtfully provided based on these findings.

We are getting stronger as we stay longer: the influence of place attachment to urban community resilience

The increasing number of disasters happening in cities has put the sustainability of urban life at stake. One of the measures to strengthen the community's resilience is by understanding how they got attached to the place they live. However, the findings of the previous research regarding the influence of place attachment to community resilience show dissimilarities. This research aims to further reveal the influence of place attachment to communities’ resilience in urban areas with a variety of socio-demographic and social dynamics. The study was conducted to 323 households that have frequently been affected by flood, at an urban-village, Tallo sub district, of Makassar City, Indonesia. With simple linear regression analysis, the aspects of place attachment which are personal, social, physical, and cultural are measured to assess its influence on each of their resilience perceptions. The research revealed that there is a positive influence of place attachment to a communities’ resilience. Based on the communities’ response, it can be seen that resilience is more likely to be formed by social-community aspects.

The influence of place attachment on community leadership and place management

PurposeThis paper aims to draw on Seamon’s(2012a, 2012b, 2014, 2015, 2018) theories on the “processes of place attachment” to understand the influence of place attachment on community leadership and the management of four towns in the Barossa region of South Australia.Design/methodology/approachThe research methodology combines photo-elicitation, participant observation and in-depth interviews with 12 community leaders across four town groups. Scannell and Gifford’s(2010) tripartite model for place attachment is used to segment qualitative interview data to understand the nature of place attachment of community leaders. This was followed by thematic analysis using Seamon’s(2012a, 2014, 2018) six processes of place attachment to understand how the dynamics of place attachment as a series of processes interact to influence community leadership and place-based action.FindingsThe research revealed that community leaders in the Barossa region regularly confront a tension between the “Being” and “Becoming” of Place. It also suggests that place attachment for new residents is accelerated by engaging multiple place attachment processes; these can be measured using the research methodology in this study. The result is a tipping point where place leadership from new residents can accelerate towards the “Being of Place” showing a tendency towards protectionist behaviour commonly seen amongst long-term residents.Research limitations/implicationsTesting the findings in this paper in other rural regions and other cultural contexts will add further insight and validation of these findings. It is recommended that future research could further develop this approach through engaging multiple place-based community groups in the same town and across different locations to understand the pattern language of communities with more accuracy.Practical implicationsThis study has enabled a deeper understanding of place-based community groups and their motivations to protect the status quo or promote change in the development and management of the place. Each community requires a tailored approach to place management and development to activate community resources and partnerships successfully. This research also provides knowledge on how to accelerate place attachment for new residents to improve their sense of belonging, value and purpose by engaging programs that engage all six place attachment processes.Social implicationsThe research reveals that place relations are dynamic, complex and often political. Rural towns display a pattern language for how they engage networks and resources that government needs to understand to engage community stewardship of place – its social, environmental and economic setting. This research offers a method to better understand the pattern language of place attachment that drives community leadership and place management to help communities sustain themselves and adapt to change.Originality/valueThe research explores the inter-relationship between the place attachment of community leaders and their response to change from different types of community impacts such as bushfires or the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding these processes is valuable in informing place management partnerships between community, business and government.

Effects of relational capital on relationship between place attachment and resident participation

AbstractPlace attachment and public participation are increasingly important to sustainable community development and environmental protection, and influence the degree to which residents value community development. Unfortunately, social segregation has broken value consensus in many modern communities, particularly Chinese communities, which traditionally emphasize interpersonal interactions. This has created discrepancies between theory and reality in community development, making it necessary to clarify the influence of relational capital (e.g., trust, identification, and norm of reciprocity) on the relationship between place attachment and resident participation. This study adopted convenience sampling to conduct a case study in Eastern Taiwan. A total of 310 valid samples were collected. The relationships between constructs are determined by a linear structural equation model. Our results show that place attachment and resident participation are positively correlated and that reciprocal norms are important mediators of the influence of place attachment on resident participation. From a practical perspective, this confirms the rationality of community policy and highlights areas for improvement to support ongoing community development.

Tourism-Induced Place Change: The Role of Place Attachment, Emotions, and Tourism Concern in Predicting Supportive or Oppositional Behavioral Responses

This study investigates residents’ emotional and behavioral responses to environmental changes caused by tourism development. Statistical analysis conducted on a comprehensive sample of 1,001 residents from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, explores emotional responses as an underlying mechanism used to explain residents’ behavioral responses as well as their tourism concern as boundary conditions for this mediating effect. In contributing to the extant debate on the role of place attachment (i.e., the bond between people and their environment) in predicting residents’ supportive behavior for tourism development, the findings reveal that high levels of place attachment generally result in oppositional behavior. Moreover, results confirm that emotions, as evoked by tourism-induced place change, explain residents’ supportive and oppositional responses. Positive emotional responses to tourism decrease the likelihood of residents’ oppositional behavior. High levels of tourism concern diminish the positive influence of place attachment on positive emotions.

“Should I stay or should I go?” Exploring the influence of individual factors on attachment, identity and commitment in a post-socialist city

Although literature suggests that high attached and identified individuals are more prone to cooperate and remain in their environment, the influence of place attachment and place identity on place commitment has not been investigated yet. The main purpose of the present study was to assess such influence. Questionnaires were administered to residents (n = 466) in the city of Belgrade, a post-socialist context which is largely understudied in prior research. The effect of socio-demographic characteristics that may predict place attachment and place identity was examined as well. Results showed that both place attachment and place identity were strongly associated with place commitment. Elderly people revealed higher levels of attachment and identity, whereas low educated individuals scored higher only on place identity. Surprisingly, participants born in Belgrade scored lower on attachment and identity. Findings are discussed in the light of the peculiar situation of the context, i.e., the capital city of a post-socialist country (Serbia) which had to face very significant changes in the last thirty years. Significant implications for policy makers and academics are underlined.

Development and Psychometric Evaluation of the Place Attachment for Community-Dwelling Older Adults Scale.

This study developed the Place Attachment for Community-Dwelling Older Adults (PACOA) scale and evaluated its psychometric properties. The PACOA was developed through a qualitative study and expert panels. A pilot study confirmed the 19-item PACOA which included five factors (meaning of life, dependency, feeling "in place," continuity, and social inclusion) were extracted. This model explained 60.803% of the variance. Cronbach's α of the PACOA and its subscales were .853 and .670 to .863, respectively, whereas the correlations between the PACOA and its subscales were .580 to .725 (p < .01). The criterion validity and test-retest reliability were .678 (p < .01) and r = .654 (p < .01). Our findings suggest that the PACOA is an indicator of the emotional connection between older adults and their places of residence. Future studies should address the older adult-place fit, the future connection characteristics, and the influence of place attachment on older adults' healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Beyond Figures and Numbers Participatory Budgeting as a Leverage for Citizen Identity and Attachment to Place

The purpose of the paper is to examine the potential of participatory budgeting (PB) for the formation of citizen identity and attachment to the place in terms of individual, territorial and thematic focus. In the theoretical discussion, the authors analyse the concepts of place attachment, social identity and their influence on civic participation. The authors propose a conceptual framework for the analysis of relationships between PB, place attachment, and social identity. In the case of the community development model of PB, place attachment should lead to the citizens’ increased inclination to participate. In the case of participatory democracy model of PB citizen participation can lead to a stronger place attachment. The con­ceptual framework presented in the paper requires empirical confirmation. Further research on the subject should revolve around the influence of place attachment on the formation of social identity and vice versa by application of the discussed models of PB. The placemakers should take into account literature-based evidence that advisory models of PB do not reinforce place identity. The places that apply one of the transition models should consider the evolution of their PB policies towards either community development model or participatory democracy model. By review of diverse theoretical approaches on place identity and local participation, the paper creates a solid foundation for further analysis of the relationships between the applica­tion of PB and the development of civic identity and place attachment.

The Influence of Place Attachment on Pro-Environmental Behaviors: The Moderating Effect of Social Media.

China is facing tremendous pressure to improve the environment. How to promote pro-environmental behaviors at the individual level is an important research topic. This study examines the relationship between social media usage, place attachment, and pro-environmental behavior based on a survey of 550 Chinese citizens. The results show that: (1) Place attachment and social media usage for environmental information acquisition have positive correlations with pro-environmental behaviors; (2) social media usage for environmental information acquisition moderates the relationship between place attachment and pro-environmental behaviors. Our survey also finds that social media play a more important role than traditional media in influencing pro-environmental behaviors. Our findings indicate that social media is changing the traditional relationship between place attachment and pro-environmental behavior. We should pay more attention to this positive role of social media and encourage citizens’ pro-environmental behavior.
