During the development of health care activities, hazardous waste is generated for human health and the environment. Given their variety and quantities they are complex to handle, a process that must be done according to their pathogenic, toxic or flammable characteristics, which mean dangerous elements and sources of human or environmental infection. The integral management of infectious wastes from health centers is an essential tool within an intervention plan for the control of biological risk. The objective is to describe the management of hospital infectious wastes at the “Cordero Crespo” health center in the city of Guaranda. It is a cross-sectional descriptive study, coinciding universe and sample, interviews and survey are applied to all workers of the institution, which is validated prior to its application (Cronbach's Alpha 0.723); software (ArcGIS) is used for mapping that describes the route of transport of hospital waste. The identification of common, biological, sharps, pharmaceutical and anatomo-pathological wastes stands out as results; and the absence of adequate breakage for the identification of waste. It is concluded that the materials for the separation, storage, transport and final disposal of waste do not comply with the technical specifiers established in the Infectious Waste Management Regulations for the Health Services Network in Ecuador. Personnel that directly manage hospital waste do not have adequate biosecurity measures.
