Towards a new progressive labour culture? Industry-oriented channels, bitter and precarious structure of feeling and worker solidarity in China

This article explores the progressive potential of commercial industry-oriented channels (IoCs), an emerging form of media produced by and addressed to workers of specific industries, on China’s digital platforms. Juxtaposing textual analysis with worker-audience interviews and participant observation, I found that despite the collusion of state surveillance and platform governance, IoCs prove instrumental in fostering resistive labour subjects and collectives among ordinary workers. This is due to IoCs’ genre convention and discourses, but more importantly, to worker-audience’s bitter and precarious structure of feeling that mediates their collective reception processes. The findings complicate our understanding of the potential of media/cultural production for labour resistance, highlighting the role of worker-audience in the circuit of progressive labour culture and the potential of commercial media in fostering radical class subjects. Drawing on the analysis, I further advance a model of worker media as double articulation, to open up more hermeneutic and action space for cultural labour activism.

Digitalization of the Energy Complex of the Republic of Belarus: State Analysis, Promising Areas, Alternative Proposal for Evaluating Efficiency

This article reflects a number of components that characterize the processes of digital transformation of the energy complex of the Republic of Belarus: costs for general activities, publication interest among industry specialists, the regulatory and legal basis for studying the ongoing process. A high degree of promotion of the state in terms of standardization and automation of energy in Belarus was also noted, including in comparison at the level of unification of the EAEU. A number of measures have been proposed in order to ensure the preselective functioning of the industry in the context of sanctions restrictions on the supply of equipment and software. The author proposes to conduct such an assessment, alternative to the indicators proposed in the Strategy of informatization and digital transformation of the state association of electric power industry «Belenergo» for the period of 2021–2025.

Impact Of Industrial Area Development on National and Regional Economies In Indonesia: Case Study And Policy Implications Post-Pandemic

This study examines the complex consequences of industrial area development on both the national and regional economies of Indonesia, with a specific focus on the interaction between these two domains. This research employs a comprehensive case study methodology to examine the policies crucial for ensuring sustainable economic growth in the aftermath of the pandemic. Industrial expansion's direct and indirect effects on job creation, economic diversification, technological advancement, and resource distribution are all examined in this analysis. Considering the varying degrees of development and infrastructure across Indonesia's regions, the study also identifies the distinct impacts of economic disparities across these areas. The results emphasize the need for tailored policy interventions that consider regional discrepancies and foster fair economic growth post-pandemic. Contributing to the economic recovery of the nation, the study finds sectors of the Indonesian economy with potential for expansion in the post-pandemic period. Employing the shift-share analysis and qualitative descriptive method, help determine if any changes have occurred in the configuration of the economic system during the post-pandemic period. The findings indicate that each of the five provinces, namely Bali, Riau Islands, Banten, East Borneo, and Yogyakarta, possesses distinct competitive advantages that are unique to their respective regions. However, none of the industries in these five areas possesses a significant degree of expertise in any particular industry. The research also emphasizes the lack of dedicated business activities focused on a specific industry.

Evolution of Social Competencies in Sustainable Supply Chains

In many sectors of the economy, the global changes brought about by COVID-19, the war in Ukraine and the ensuing economic crisis have challenged the hitherto used social competencies necessary to successfully manage companies in sustainable supply chains. The slogan of sustainability has now become a household word in the global economy. At the same time, the EU is moving from a 4.0 to a 5.0 economy, with increasing attention being paid to the soft competencies of future managers. This article aims to present the patterns of competencies in supply chains and to identify the relevance of specific social competencies for doing business in the face of the above challenges. The survey was conducted among selected experts from the healthcare industry, who were asked to identify the importance of social competencies. This choice was primarily motivated by certain characteristics of the industry. This work aims to determine which social competencies seem to be essential for future managers in sustainable supply chains and the transformation towards a 5.0 economy. The answer to this question is crucial for research and teaching centers aiming to educate future managers at the highest level of specific social competencies and skills in a business environment. Given the dynamic development of specific industries, it is reasonable to identify the needs in the areas of social skills.

Adolescent Wilderness Therapy: The Relationship of Client Outcomes to Reasons for Referral, Motivation for Change, and Clinical Measures

Outdoor behavioral healthcare is a specific model and industry utilizing wilderness therapy (WT), a residential treatment approach comprised of outdoor travel and living for youth experiencing mental health, substance use, and behavioral concerns. We present data from 6417 participants about reasons for referral, admission, and discharge scores from the Youth-Outcome Questionnaire (Y-OQ), youth interest and commitment to treatment, reliable change scores, and the relationship between these variables. One-third of youth entered WT with sub-clinical scores, varying levels of client motivation and voluntariness in relation to clinical outcomes, a diverse range of presenting problems without clear indication of specialized treatment planning, and differing responses to treatment by referral reason. Identifying those not responding to WT and those at risk of deterioration from the time of admission requires further investigation to improve client outcomes for this treatment modality. Recommendations include placing increased importance on accurate and thorough screening and assessment, utilizing baseline and routine outcome monitoring, reducing coercion, and considering specialized intervention.

Potential for industrial production development in the Republic of Bashkortostan and in neighbouring regions

Socio-economic development of regions depends on the level of interaction between them on the basis of their industry specialisation. The purpose of the study is to determine the potential for the industrial production development of the regions for further activation of interregional interaction. Types of industrial production of the Republic of Bashkortostan and its neighbouring regions are the object of the study. The paper assesses its development in dynamics and statics by type of activity. Its specialisation is determined, the leading types of economic activity are identified with the use of localisation coefficients and localisation intensity. The development level of industrial production in the Russian Federation and in the regions near the Republic of Bashkortostan have similar trends, however, sharp fluctuations occur in Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. In these subjects, the largest share in manufacturing belongs to metallurgical production. Also many activities that are to be in the zone of increased localisation in terms of the turnover of an organisation and the number of employees are actually in the zone of low effective localisation. Industrial production in the Udmurt Republic and the Republic of Tatarstan is less affected by the fluctuations. In Bashkortostan, the largest share is occupied by extraction of coke and petroleum products. To strengthen technological sovereignty, it is necessary to activate the interaction between regions in industrial production.

Comprehensive analysis of regional disparities in the distribution of income and welfare of the population in the Russian regions

The modern Russian economy is characterised by considerable regional disparities concerning distribution of incomes and well-being of the citizens. These imbalances can be especially noticeable when analysing various sectors which play an important role in the economic progress of the regions. Within the framework of this study, based on a comparative analysis, the degree of dependence of the living standard on the electromechanical industry is assessed. The hypothesis is advanced that the outstripping growth of this sector has a significant positive impact on indicators of employment, income, and quality of life. Testing this hypothesis will make it possible to create a state policy for equalising the socio-economic development of Russian regions with consideration to the industry specialisation of their economies. Statistical data on personal income, quality of life indices, as well as specific indicators of industry progress in different regions of the Federation were used for the study. The employed methods of correlation and regression analysis identified the links between the level of sectoral development and economic well-being of the territorial units. The analysis showed that such regions as Moscow, St. Petersburg, where an infrastructure sector leads, and a number of oil-producing Siberian regions demonstrate higher indicators of income and quality of life. At the same time, subjects with a less developed sector, for instance some areas of the North Caucasus and Siberia, are experiencing difficulties in achieving similar levels of welfare.

Symposium on molecular radiotherapy dosimetry: The first of a series?

The EFOMP Special Interest Group for Radionuclide Internal Dosimetry (SIG_FRID) organised its first scientific meeting, the Symposium on Molecular Radiotherapy Dosimetry, in Athens on November 9th–11th 2023. The Symposium was hosted by the Hellenic Association of Medical Physicists and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. This meeting gathered more than 180 scientists from 28 countries. Scientific, clinical and regulatory aspects were addressed by 8 invited experts. Two continuous professional development sessions were organised. A special round table gathering medical physics experts, physicians regulatory authority experts and patient representatives addressed the possibilities to increase clinical dosimetry dissemination. The event was supported by companies and a specific industry session allowed sponsors to present their products, innovations and future perspective in this field.

Applications of 3D Reconstruction in Virtual Reality-Based Teleoperation: A Review in the Mining Industry

This study investigates the existing gap in fully immersive teleoperation systems within the mining industry, aiming to identify the most optimal methods for their development and ensure operator’s safety. To achieve this purpose, a literature search is employed to identify and extract information from the most relevant sources. The most advanced teleoperation systems are examined by focusing on their visualization types. Then, various 3D reconstruction techniques applicable to mining VR teleoperation are investigated, and their data acquisition methods, sensor technologies, and algorithms are analyzed. Ultimately, the study discusses challenges associated with 3D reconstruction techniques for mining teleoperation. The findings demonstrated that the real-time 3D reconstruction of underground mining environments primarily involves depth-based techniques. In contrast, point cloud generation techniques can mostly be employed for 3D reconstruction in open-pit mining operations.

What determines the economic resilience of Chinese cities amid pandemic crisis: An economic operating state perspective

This paper first further clarifies economic operating state resilience from the concept of regional economic resilience and uses it to explore what factors influence the resilience during the pandemic. We find that the impact of different factors on regional economic resilience and economic operating state resilience is not entirely consistent in the early stages of the pandemic. The results reveal that industry specialization and unrelated diversity have positive effects at different stages, with opposite roles for human capital. High shares of secondary and tertiary industries can impair resilience in the recovery phase. However, the roles of government and diversity are not consistent across stages. Going beyond the determinants of regional economic resilience in previous economic cycles of liquidity crises, this article highlights the role of the public governance and industrial structure at different stages of the pandemic shock and argues that enhancing regional economic resilience in the reshaping of the ‘face-to-face’ pattern of economic activity is a great challenge in the post-pandemic era. This paper provides new insights for policymakers and researchers in responding to major public health events, understanding resilience process and promoting sustainable development in the post-pandemic era.

Experimental competence formation in chemistry teacher training

Relevance. The research relevance is determined by the need to adapt the educational system to the rapidly changing requirements of the labour market and technological progress. Purpose. The study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of analytical chemistry training programmes in leading universities of Kazakhstan from the point of view of developing the scientific competence of students necessary for employment. Methodology. The study employs comparative, qualitative, and statistical analyses, questionnaires, surveys and observation. Results. The study examines the role of universities in training analytical specialists. The requirements of the labour market and academic institutions for candidates for positions in analytical chemistry, as well as the current state of research and development in training, were considered. The findings showed that many university graduates trained in analytical chemistry prefer not to go to work in industry or factory laboratories, but plan to stay in academia and continue their research. This indicates the need to revise curricula to better meet the requirements of the labour market and academic institutions. Problems and gaps in current programmes and methods of teaching analytical chemistry at universities in Kazakhstan have been identified. Approaches to strengthening the practical component of courses have been critically analysed, considering the current requirements and assessments of industry specialists. Conclusions. The study highlighted the high demand for qualified specialists, emphasizing that the issue lies not in the shortage of vacancies but in the level of training. The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that its results can be used to modernise the system of education in the field of analytical chemistry and improve curricula and teaching methods. This, in turn, will help to improve the quality of training of analytical chemists who will be able to meet the needs of the labour market and scientific institutions. Bibliometric Analysis Presenting the Current State of Scientific Research, Evolution and Management of Sustainability

The concept of sustainability has gained attention in academia, business, and policy, driven by concerns about environmental degradation, social inequities, and economic imbalances. This study analyzes scientific research and the evolution of sustainability, focusing on the automotive industry in management, business, and economics. Conducted from May to August 2023, a bibliometric analysis explores global trends, revealing diverse contributions. It emphasizes the need to enhance industry sustainability, particularly in the automotive sector, a significant contributor to global emissions responsible for ~10% of the greenhouse gas emissions. Regulations for achieving net-zero emissions extend from production to vehicle usage. Despite substantial volume of sustainability-related publications between 1900-2023, a comprehensive understanding of sustainability management practices, especially in specific industries, is underdeveloped indicating a gap between existing research and the practical implementation of sustainable practices, especially within industries such as automotive.

DATA PRIVACY LAWS AND COMPLIANCE: A COMPARATIVE REVIEW OF THE EU GDPR AND USA REGULATIONS

This Review provides an overview of the comparative review of data privacy laws and compliance, focusing on the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR) and data protection regulations in the United States. The analysis explores key similarities and differences, emphasizing their implications for businesses and individuals. The EU GDPR, implemented in 2018, stands as a landmark regulation governing data protection and privacy for individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area. In contrast, the United States lacks a comprehensive federal data privacy law. Instead, it relies on a patchwork of sector-specific laws and state regulations, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). One major distinction lies in the overarching principles of these regulations. The EU GDPR adopts a comprehensive and rights-based approach, emphasizing individual rights to privacy, data portability, and the "right to be forgotten." In contrast, the U.S. system often focuses on specific industries or types of data, leading to a more fragmented regulatory landscape. Both regulatory frameworks incorporate principles of transparency, consent, and data breach notification. However, differences in enforcement mechanisms and penalties exist. The EU GDPR imposes significant fines for non-compliance, reaching up to 4% of a company's global annual revenue. In the U.S., penalties vary by state, and enforcement is often reactive, triggered by data breaches. Businesses operating globally must navigate these distinct regulatory landscapes, necessitating a nuanced approach to data privacy compliance. Multinational corporations must adhere to the more stringent requirements when handling EU citizens' data while also considering the diverse regulations within the U.S. This review underscores the ongoing evolution of data privacy laws worldwide and the critical importance for organizations to stay abreast of these developments. It emphasizes the need for a proactive and adaptive approach to data privacy compliance, taking into account the unique requirements and expectations of both the EU GDPR and U.S. regulations.

Priority and non-priority sector GNPAS in Indian commercial banks: a comparison between sub-sectors

Purpose This study aims to examine the impact and contribution of priority and non-priority sectors, as well as their sub-sectors, on the gross non-performing assets of public, private and foreign sector banks. Design/methodology/approach The Reserve Bank of India's database on the Indian economy is used to retrieve data over 13 years (2008–2021). Public sector (12), private sector (22) and foreign sector (44) banks are represented in the sample. Two-way ANOVA, multiple regression and panel regression statistical techniques are used in SPSS and EViews to examine the data. Further, the results are also validated by using robustness testing by applying the fully modified ordinary least square (FMOLS) and dynamic least square (DOLS) regression. Findings The results showed that, for private and foreign banks, the non-priority sector makes up the majority of the total gross non-performing assets, although both the priority and non-priority sectors are substantial for public sector banks. The largest contributors to the total gross non-performing assets in public, private and foreign banks are industries, agriculture and micro and small businesses. The FMOLS displays robustness results that are qualitatively similar to the baseline result. Practical implications Based on the study's findings about the patterns of non-performing assets originating from these specific industries, banks might improve the way in which these advanced loans are managed. Originality/value There has not been much research done on the subject of sub-sector-specific non-performing assets and how they affect total gross non-performing assets across the three sector banks. The study's primary focus will be on the issue of non-performing assets in the priority’s and non-priority’s sub-sectors, namely, agricultural, micro and small businesses, food credit, industries, services, retail loans and other priority and non-priority sectors.

Geopolitical considerations are playing an increasingly dominant role in countries’ trade policies over recent years. In the context of geopolitical tension and economic fragmentation, countries are reshaping their global value chains (GVCs) to address their economic security from possible future disruption of supply chains. In recent years, countries, particularly, the United States (US) and the European Union (EU) have taken several legal measures and adopted various policy tools either unilaterally or through bilateral and plurilateral alliances that further the idea of friend-shoring and on-shoring. This paper intends to map those legal and policy tools adopted by the United States and the European Union that further the idea of friend-shoring and on-shoring and analyses those tools in the Indian context. The paper argues that though the EU and the US are the largest trading partners of India and their strategies will likely have an impact on India. Nonetheless, India needs to look beyond these strategies pioneered by the US and EU to cater to the needs of its specific industry concerns. The primary objective of this research is to examine the role of vocational education and training in China and its impact on the country’s industrial advancement. Researchers will employ qualitative methodologies to interview pertinent stakeholders, encompassing graduates of vocational education institutions, administrative staff, and lecturers.
