An Experimental Study of the Impact of Project-based Learning on Senior High Students’ 4C Abilities

This experimental study investigates the impact of project-based learning (PjBL) on students' capacities for critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration (i.e., the 4Cs). This study adopted a two-group experimental design comprising an experimental group, which received PjBL pedagogy, and a control group, which received traditional pedagogy. Of the 113 tenth graders from an agricultural and industrial vocational high school in central Taiwan, 55 were assigned to the experimental group, and 58 were assigned to the control group. The data were collected over one semester using scales to measure critical thinking, communication, creativity, and collaboration. Data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics, including distribution frequencies, percentages, mean values, standard deviations, and inferential statistics, including ANCOVA. The results revealed that the experimental group acquired significantly higher scores on the 4C scales than the control group, indicating that PjBL pedagogy is more effective than traditional pedagogy at improving students' 4C abilities. The experimental group students' post-test scores of 4C capacities were significantly higher than their pre-test scores, showing a significant enhancement in their 4C capabilities after receiving PjBL pedagogy. The study confirmed that PjBL pedagogy had a highly positive effect on students' 4C capacities.

In this research, it is aimed to evaluate the research findings of the effects of the cultural leadership roles of secondary school administrators on resistance to change. In this context, the research findings have been reached by trying to determine the opinions of administrators and teachers working in secondary education institutions about the effects of the cultural leadership roles of secondary school administrators on resistance to change by conducting data analysis. The universe of the research consists of administrators and teachers who worked in secondary education institutions (general high school, anatolian vocational and vocational high school, industrial vocational high school, private high school) in Kadikoy, Üsküdar, Umraniye, Maltepe and Kartal districts on the Anatolian side of Istanbul in the 2007-2008 academic year. The sample consists of a total of 321 participants, 58 of whom are administrators and 263 of whom are teachers working in 17 secondary schools selected from the universe through random (random). According to the research findings, it was observed that ½ of the teachers participating in the study were graduates of the faculty of education, experienced teachers at a similar rate, again, they worked in vocational high schools at a similar rate, the number of teachers who completed a master's degree was quite low, and teacher subjects answered the survey at a rate of ¾. The findings of the research in question have been evaluated by examining these data, information and findings within the framework of this study.

In this study, it is aimed to investigate the data analysis of the effects of cultural leadership roles of secondary school administrators on resistance to change. In this context, some suggestions have been made by trying to determine the opinions of administrators and teachers working in secondary education institutions about the effects of the cultural leadership roles of secondary school administrators on resistance to change. In order to determine the current situation in schools, a questionnaire has been developed. The survey consists of three parts. In the first part of the survey, the demographic variable characteristics of the research participants were tried to be determined, and in the second part of the survey, administrators and teachers were asked to respond to the cultural leadership characteristics of institution managers and whether they could use this feature in terms of resistance to change, and the situation in school management was tried to be determined. In the third part of the survey, the thoughts that the participants wanted to add were included. The universe of the research consists of administrators and teachers who worked in secondary education institutions (general high school, anatolian vocational and vocational high school, industrial vocational high school, private high school) in Kadikoy, Üsküdar, Umraniye, Maltepe and Kartal districts on the Anatolian side of Istanbul in the 2007-2008 academic year. The results obtained were calculated by using statistical methods T Test, one-way analysis of variance in SPSS 15 computer program. The effect of biology teaching with concept cartoons based on constructivist learning approach on student achievement and permanence of knowledge

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of concept cartoons and biology teaching based on a constructivist learning approach on student achievement and permanence of knowledge. The study group consists of 49 students studying in two of the 10th digital classes of Kazım Karabekir Technical and Industrial Vocational High School in the Yunus Emre district of Erzurum. At the stage of data collection, biology achievement tests including three-stage pre-test, post-test and permanence test consisting of 25 questions related to the subject of “Ecosystem Ecology”, which is the third unit of the biology course, were prepared and used from the preparation books of the Student Selection Examination (ÖSS). In the study in which the pretest, posttest control group quasi-experimental design was used, the subjects were applied to the control group with the traditional straight expression method, and the teaching method was applied to the experimental group with the researched concept cartoons. The cartoons were given to the experimental group as a material, and the lesson was presented as slides, supported by cartoons, and actively processed in the form of questions and answers. As a result of the evaluation of the data, there was a statistically significant difference in favor of the experimental group (p <0.05) according to the posttest scores obtained from the achievement test in the experimental group, where the teaching was performed with concept cartoons, and there was a significant difference between the groups in terms of retention test scores made after 4 weeks (p <0.05) was observed. At the end of the study, it was understood that teaching with concept cartoons had a positive effect on providing students to learn biology knowledge compared to the traditional method.

Conformity Between The Choices Of Entering Majors With Employment After Graduation At Non-Technology And Industrial Vocational Schools In Indonesia

The high open unemployment rate of vocational graduates in the two semesters of August 2018 and February 2019 is an anomaly, Indonesia government through presidential instruction No. 9 of 2016 concerning vocational revitalization which imposes four national development priorities on vocational education, they are Agriculture, maritime, tourism, and creative industries. Indonesia Ministry of Education also targets vocational graduates in Indonesia absorbed by industry. Non-technology and industrial vocational schools are an inseparable part of the four priorities of Indonesia’s national development mentioned earlier. This research tries to describe the problems that suffer from vocational schools, more specifically the relationship and appropriateness of the majors they choose with their work after graduation. This research with a sample of 1398 non-technology and industrial vocational high school, 629 alumni and 769 students. This research found 938 respondent who choose to study at non-technology and industrial vocational schools for reasons of interest, and only 283 alumni work according to their chosen majors, or only 45 percent. A more sad number was found in the overall sample, where only 55% percent of alumni were employed in accordance with their chosen majors. For this reason, revitalization of non-technology and industrial vocational schools in Indonesia is required.

Evaluation Program of Work Practice in Industrial Vocational High School (Seen From Respondents Teacher Supervisor)

This study aimed to describe the context, input, process, product industry work practices program at SMK Negeri 1 Lintau. This research is CIPP evaluation model. The methodology used is the method of combination (Mixed Methods) design verification sequence (Sequential Explanatory). The research was conducted at SMK Negeri 1 Lintau. The informants are the principal, chairman prakerin, tutor, mentor and student industry. The technique of collecting data through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. Based on data analysis found that the level of achievement prakerin program from the aspects of respondents Teacher Advisor to the variable context prakerin program at SMK Negeri 1 Lintau amounted to 83.77% in both categories. Input variables prakerin program at SMK Negeri 1 Lintau for 82,23% in both categories. Variable process prakerin program at SMK Negeri 1 Lintau amounted to 79.40% with enough.Variabel product category prakerin program at SMK Negeri 1 Lintau amounted to 80.75%.

Enhancement of English learning performance by using an attention-based diagnosing and review mechanism in paper-based learning context with digital pen support

Since English is probably the most popular second language, helping students learn English through technology is a critical issue in non-English-speaking countries. With the growth of digital pen technologies, developing an interactive learning environment that combines printed textbooks and a digital pen to support English-language classroom learning has become feasible. This work presents an attention-based diagnosing and review mechanism (ADRM) based on brainwave detection to help learners identify the passages with low attention level in a lesson as review targets in order to perform efficiently and accurately review processes while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support in autonomous learning environments. Based on the true experimental design, this work aims to confirm whether the ADRM improves the review performance and sustained attention of learners while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support. The research participants were a total of 108 students at an industrial vocational high school in Taipei City, Taiwan. All research participants were male and aged from 17 to 18 years. The experimental group used the ADRM while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support, whereas the control group used the autonomous review while reading paper-based English texts with digital pen support. Experimental results reveal that the review performance of the experimental group was significantly better than that of the control group, proving that the ADRM improved review performance. The results also show that the field-dependent learners in the experimental group exhibited a great improvement in review performance in comparison with the field-independent learners. Additionally, the low-ability learners in the experimental group exhibited better review performance compared to those in the control group. Furthermore, learners with high attention level in the experimental group have exhibited better review performance and sustained attention than the learners in the control group. This work confirms that developing an ADRM based on brainwave detection to assist learners’ review processes is practicable. However, the usability and acceptability of using ADRM instead of human autonomous review should be further considered in the information society.

A Study on the Relationship between Problem Solving Skills and Multiple Intelligences of High School Students

Problem solving is a complex process in which encountered problems are defeated as reaching a target and problem solving skills are developed in school years. And, intelligence is defined as the ability to solve problems or to create products being valued within one or more cultural settings. Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to examine the relationship between multiple intelligences and problem solving skills. The relational model was used in the current study. The research group included 181 female (48.39 %) and 193 male (51.61 %) students studying at Zubeyde Hanim Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School and Gazi Industrial Vocational High School. The Multiple Intelligences Inventory adapted in Turkish by Ozden (2003) and Problem Solving Inventory developed by Heppner and Peterson (1982) and adapted in Turkish by Sahin et al. (1993) were used as the data collection tool. Data were analyzed using the analysis of Pearson correlation. The findings indicated that there have been found some significant positive and negative correlations between variables.

Risky behaviors of adolescent boys: A high school sample

Background: The World Health Organization defines “10-19 age group” as adolescence period during which risky behaviors are more common especially between 16-18 years. With this present study it was aimed to determine the risky behaviors of 16-18 years high school students in order to form a basis for the planned training and monitoring program. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional type study has been conducted in the industrial vocational high school in Corum. No sample selection was made. The sample of study consisted of 16-18 years voluntarily participating adolescents (n = 790), who were visiting the high school during the research dates (September-December 2014). As data collection tool a self-description form (SDF) and adolescents risk-taking scale (ARTS) have been used. The data has been evaluated with appropriate statistical methods. p < 0.05 has been accepted as statistically significant. Results: The average of age within the scope of study was 17.3 ± 0.2 years old and all were male. According to the evaluation of ARTS it has been observed that 48.5 % of adolescents are in the risky group and risk-taking average is increasing with in case of having smokers among family and friends. It has been found out that the differences between ARTS median value and their age as well as the smoking habits among family and friends is stastically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: According to the applied ARTS evaluation it has been determined that the adolescents risk-taking score is alarming high. Whereas provided traditional-classical training for the prevention of risky behaviors in adolescents appear to be ineffective, the importance of revealing alternative ways in order to eliminate risky behaviors of adolescents come to the fore.

People around the world differ in race, language, religion, gender, and social and economic traits. Peace and calmness in the world can be created by teaching the value of to all people. In this age, war, violence and terror occur frequently. Thus, it was particularly important that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared 1995 as The Year for Tolerance. Tolerance training is an important subject and it cannot be restricted to certain courses and curricula. Therefore, this study is a sample practice about how tolerance training can be provided in a Geography lesson. The study also determined students' evaluations about the practice. This study employs a qualitative design. The participants are the ninth grade students in Ataturk Technical and Industrial Vocational High School. The author has recorded the process of the practice and collected the opinions of all students by means of a questionnaire consisting of open-ended questions. The data were analyzed using content analysis. The study results indicated that a geography lesson offers a fine opportunity for tolerance training. However, the teaching and learning environment needs to be organized well. Key words: Tolerance, tolerance training, Geography lesson, ninth grade students.

An alternative evaluation: online puzzle as a course-end activity

Purpose– The purpose of this study is to determine whether the use of online puzzles in the instructional process has an effect on student achievement and learning retention. This study examined students ' perception and experiences on use of puzzle as an alternative evaluation tool. To achieve this aim, the following hypotheses were tested: using puzzle activities in lessons increases student achievement, using puzzle activities in lessons increases retention of information learned by the students and students have positive attitudes toward using puzzle activities in lessons. This study uses an online puzzle system (OPS) by which instructors can prepare puzzle activities for students to solve online. The technical and functional properties of the OPS developed and used are beyond the scope of this study.Design/methodology/approach– A pre- and post-test with control group experimental research design was implemented. Study participants were tenth-grade students in the Information Technologies Department of Gazi Anatolia Technical and Industrial Vocational School in Elazig during the 2011-2012 year. Thirty students each were chosen for the experimental and control groups, totaling 60 students. During the study, a traditional instruction method was used for the control group, while the experimental group received both traditional instruction and performed activities using the OPS. The subject Fundamentals of Networking was chosen, and the implementation period lasted six weeks. Four weeks after completion of the study, the achievement level of students was calculated again to test learning retention.Findings– The first hypothesis of the study is, “Using puzzle activities in the lessons increases the achievement of the students”. In the teaching of the Networking Fundamentals Module of Information Technologies Course for tenth graders, a significant difference in favor of the experimental group was seen, where online puzzle activities were used in terms of student achievement. The second hypothesis of the study is, “Using puzzle activities in the lessons increase the retention of the information learned by the students”. Four weeks after completion of the study, the achievement levels of the students were calculated again to test learning retention. The learning retention of the students in the experimental group is higher than that of the students in the control group. In addition, students in the experimental group had positive attitudes toward online puzzle activities. Doing online puzzle activities accelerates learning for students and helps them learn networking terms by creating an enjoyable environment.Research limitations/implications– The current study was limited to six weeks of implementation during the 2011-2012 school year at Gazi Anatolia Technical and Industrial Vocational High School in Elazig. Similar studies could be conducted in other schools for longer periods and at different levels, so the findings can be compared with those of the current study. This study is further limited to an Information Technologies Course. Studies can be conducted with various courses using appropriate online puzzle activities. Puzzle types other than the crossword used in the OPS of the current study should be developed and added. The system should also be developed by visual multimedia objects, allowing it to be more interactive. Moreover, in the development process of such an OPS, educators, software designers, psychologists and scholars from other fields should work together. Usability tests should be conducted to improve user-friendliness of the system by adding various features related to functionality and visuality.Practical implications– From the findings of the study, it can be concluded that online puzzle activities help students understand subjects better and aid in exam preparation. Moreover, these activities are effective for students in terms of increasing understanding and retention of learned terms in and outside class, forming valuable learning experiences. Doing online puzzle activities in class as a course-end activity can be said to be more effective in students’ learning than doing them outside of class. Crossword puzzles offer opportunities for students to accelerate learning by quickly mastering new words and phrases and by directing students to more actively interact with computer-related vocabulary and terminology as compared with the rote learning method.Originality/value– Paper-based puzzles are frequently used, and there are few Web-based puzzles. Despite their frequent use, preparing and evaluating paper-based puzzles can require a significant time investment; another disadvantage is the lack of immediate feedback. Based on the literature review, there is no dynamic OPS used for educational purposes. This study uses an OPS by which instructors can prepare puzzle activities for students to solve online. The originality of this study is OPS features and puzzle generation mechanism. The system presents a user-friendly interface with Turkish character (or any language) support and number-writing properties.

Influence of E-Portfolio Supported Education Process to Academic Success of the Students

Problem Statement: In recent years usage of e-portfolio in education has become the topic of many researches. In these researches it is generally emphasized the influences of e-portfolio to the learning attitude, academic success and usage of information technologies.Purpose of Study: In this work the influence of e-portfolio supported education process to the academic successes of 10th grade students of Tekirdag Technical and Industrial Vocational High School has been studied. Within the scope of the research, e-portfolio supported education in test group in Vocational Development course and traditional in-class education was applied in control group in 2nd semester of 2010-2011 academic year.Method: Control Group Trial Model with pretest and posttest was applied.Findings and Results: While assessing the findings from the work it was benefited from SPSS 17.0 package program for statistical analyses. Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test was applied in order to see whether the difference between pretests and posttests of test and control groups. In comparison of quantitative data t-test and Mann Whitney U test was used. Conclusions and Recommendations: According to the findings obtained at the end of the research, academic success posttest scores of the students in test group was higher comparing to that of students in control group. Based on these findings it was reached to the conclusion that e-portfolio supported education process influenced the success of students in positive way.

ELAZIĞ`DA ÜNİVERSİTE VE LİSEDE ÖĞRENİM GÖREN BİLGİSAYAR BÖLÜMÜ ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN ADLİ BİLİŞİM SUÇLARINA YAKLAŞIMLARI

The purpose of this study is to determine and compare student opinions on computer crimes who are currently attending at Vocational High Schools or at the university in Elazig region. Research was conducted on 300 students who serviced education the Central Industrial Vocational High School, 100th Anniversary of Industrial Vocational High School, Gazi Technical and Industrial Vocational High School and the Faculty of Technical Education and Technology of Firat University. Questionnaires administered face to face by pollsters. The questionnaires consist of 17 items. Statistical packet program was used to conduct analysis of quantitative data obtained from the study. Frequency, percentage and chi-square values were obtained.According to the findings, the percentage of high school-level students` knowledge about computer crimes is 45.3%, while this number increases to 59.3% in the university level. 74% of the high school student participants claim the lack of laws for cyber crimes, while this number is 84% in university level. As a result, level of awareness about the crimes computer forensics of university students who studying in the field, is higher than that of high school students studying in the same field have been revealed.

The investigation of harmony between teachers’ thoughts on nature of learning and their applied teaching activities in teaching and learning process

This study is carried out in order to determine what a relation between different branch teachers’ thoughts on nature of learning and these teachers’ applied teaching activities in school exists. For this aim, observation rapports as data gathering instrument were created in order to assign teachers’ teaching methods. Therefore, an interview was prepared to find out the thoughts about nature of learning. The observations and interviews were applied to 15 teachers working at different branches of different high schools like Ziya Gökalp High School, Nevzat Karabağ Anatolian Teacher Training High School, Erzurum High School, Nenehatun Girls High School, Cumhuriyet High School, Kazım Karabekir Industrial Vocational High School, 3 Temmuz High School, İMKB High School, Atatürk High School, Rıfkı Salim Burçak Girls Vocational High School and Atatürk Industrial Vocational High School which are under the authority of Erzurum Directorate of National Education. After the analyses of data, it was found that there is no harmony between teachers’ thoughts on nature of learning and their teaching methods chosen in teaching and learning processes.

Student views on problem-based learning of 9th grade industrial vocational high school

Mathematics lessons are rather important since the analytical approach is the main issue in engineering. But industrial vocational highschool students perceive maths as a hard lesson with too many equations thus it influence their success and their approach towards maths. In order to change students’ perception we need to have educational strategies where the students will be responsible for their learning from real life skills. For this reason, in the last years student centered and learning based constructive educational approaches are being used. Problem-based learning, being one of these approaches, is used in mathematics lesson in 9th grade Industrial Vocational High School. In the end of this study, students conception of problem-based learning is gathered from a survey of 5 open-ended questions asked in student's view or PBL questionnaire form and positive and negative results of problem- based learning is set forth.

Vocational and technical education problem-based learning exercise: Sample scenario

Mathematics is rather important since the analytical approach is the main issue in industrial education. However, the researches showed that the industrial vocational high school students’ success in mathematic lessons are low. As a result, student centered education methods should be preferred instead of teacher based education in mathematic lessons. The students do not acquire knowledge by hearth in teacher based methods. When students do not structure the knowledge by themselves, it tends to be forgotten in a short period of time. For this reason the student centered and problem based - learning methods are used in this study and it is aimed to give students meaningful and permanent learning. In problem-based learning (PBL), subjects are introduced to students in scenarios prepared according to real life. In this study “Factorial” was introduced to students in a scenario and students were given to solve the problem in formed groups.
