The Impact of the Pandemic on the Performance of Industrial Construction Projects in Indonesia

The Covid-19 outbreak has caused economic downturns and recession. In 2021, Covid-19 cases in Indonesia has a significant increase. The construction sector in Indonesia faced substantial challenges due to the pandemic, evidenced by contracted growth. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the construction industry cannot be viewed solely from an economic perspective but must consider various factors. Issues in the construction industry affect project performance. Previous research could not interpret the relationship between individual pandemic impacts and project performance levels. Therefore, this study aims to determine factors Covid-19 pandemic affects construction project performance in Indonesia. The study identifies five factors that may influence project performance: (1) challenges in implementing social distancing, (2) movement restrictions, (3) challenges of working from home (WFH), (4) planning for worker limitations, and (5) use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Data was collected using questionnaires distributed to project managers in the construction industry. Primary analysis was conducted using Partial Least Square (PLS). The results indicate that three variables significantly impact project performance in the construction industry. The level of movement restrictions during the pandemic (lockdown) and the planning for worker limitations negatively affect project performance, while movement restrictions positively affect the challenges of implementing social distancing.

Application of Skip-bin Casting Method in Mass Concrete

With the increasing scale of large-scale civil and industrial construction projects, the problem of controlling temperature cracks is of vital importance in order to ensure the integrity and durability of mass concrete foundation footings. This paper is based on an actual project of construction of a large volume concrete skip bin method, using Midas FEA NX to carry out finite element simulation of the construction process under the skip bin casting of the project, and study the temperature field derived from the simulation, and it is found that the temperature of this large volume concrete project is maximum at about 48h after the concrete casting, and the location is in the center of the concrete.

The Relationship between Pre-Estimation and Cost Management in Industrial Construction Projects

Industrial construction projects are the foundation of organizing industrial production, requiring both quality assurance and cost considerations. Pre-estimation of project costs and cost management are essential means and methods for project cost management. Strengthening the pre-estimation management of construction project costs can effectively control project costs and quality, save funds, and provide data support for management decisions. This article first briefly introduces the concepts of pre-estimation and cost management in engineering costs, focusing on the relationship between pre-estimation and cost management in industrial construction projects. It then proposes countermeasures from the aspects of enhancing the scientificity and accuracy of pre-estimation compilation and strengthening fine management on the construction site, aiming to provide some reference for the industry.

Конституирующие нарративы локальной исторической памяти жителей регионов Сибири: между личным и общественным

The article examines the narratives of local historical self-identification of residents of the Siberian regions of Russia. The main objective of the study was to search for specific ideas, not related to the typical historical myths of the Russian periphery, through which Siberians construct their own social identity. The information base for the study was the results of focus groups conducted in 9 cities of Siberia and the Urals: Perm, Tyumen, Omsk, Novosibirsk, Barnaul, Kemerovo, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk. It was revealed that the local historical self-identification of Siberians is based on the perceived uncritically typical heroic narrative of the Russian periphery, associated with its development by representatives of the “country,” which is understood as the central government. Among the narratives of local historical memory, narrow local subjects associated with specific territories dominate - from the construction of a bridge across the Ob in Novosibirsk to the development of the coal industry in Kuzbass. Common myths are the narratives of the heroic “development of Siberia” from Ermak to Soviet industrial construction projects. In this form, the identified set of historical myths has a clearly Moscow-centric character and cannot serve as a basis for constructing local identity. However, as soon as the peripheral national narrative comes into conflict with the personal or family experiences of respondents, it corrodes. This leads to a critical understanding of the constitutive narratives of local historical self-identification.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of project management and partnership banking. Due to the shortage of investment, Ukraine always needs to plan for financial resources. All over the world, partnership banking is becoming an increasingly common and attractive type of investment in projects. In the conditions of modern Ukraine, with the need to restore industrial and infrastructure construction projects, one can predict significant growth in the construction services market and the need for investment. In this study, the ways of possible increasing investment in the construction industry have been discussed based on the use of a logical-structural approach in project management and partnership banking as a source of investment.

Optimized variable resource allocation framework for scheduling of fast-track industrial construction projects

Efficient scheduling and resource allocation for large-scale industrial projects is challenging due to their size and complexity, especially with fast-track contracts, which often lack detailed information during the early planning phase. This paper introduces a data-driven workface planning framework to enhance scheduling and resource allocation while accommodating uncertainties and constraints (e.g., minimum and maximum resource allocation curves, dynamic predecessor relationships, congestion limits). This framework employs an integrated approach, combining time-stepped simulation with graph-based optimization. By leveraging historical data and expert knowledge, the data-driven framework mitigates certain subjective assumptions, including durations and resource allocations. In practical application, the framework generates near-optimal schedules, even with limited information. Applying the framework to a fast-track industrial construction project case study demonstrated enhanced resource allocation. These findings offer practical benefits to industrial projects regarding time and cost savings and serve as a foundation for future research in data-driven project planning approaches.

Abstract: Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) is an eco-friendly building material. It is a product of fly ash which is mixed with lime, cement, aluminum powder and water in a certain proportion. The use of fly ash, a waste product collected from coal based thermal power plant can be consumed as a significant resource as building material. AAC is a best option for traditional red clay brick and cement brick. It is useful in residential, commercial and industrial construction projects. In this study, the review covers the study about AAC concrete blocks, advantages and its importance, AAC block manufacturing and its potential use as green construction material.

Integrated FAHP-FDEMATEL for determining causal relationships in construction crew productivity modelling

Construction crew productivity is affected by the motivation of the crew performing given activities and by situational/contextual factors forming the dynamic construction environment. The literature lacks a comprehensive analysis of causal relationships between crew motivation and situational/contextual factors for dynamic modelling of crew productivity. The contributions of this paper are (1) identifying a set of criteria for performing expert weight assignment for heterogenous group experts in productivity research, (2) proposing an integrated fuzzy analytic hierarchy process–fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory approach that provides a systematic, structured method for determining causal relationship mapping between factors affecting crew productivity, and (3) proposing an approach for identifying cause-and-effect groups among the situational/contextual factors and crew motivation, which can further be used to formulate strategic productivity improvement solutions. The proposed methodology is demonstrated using a case study on an actual industrial construction project in Alberta, Canada.

Wind–Human Resonance in a Polluted City: The Case of Dalinpu in Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Air pollution creates significant challenges, particularly in countries undergoing rapid industrialization and urbanization. Wind, a strong agency in moving polluting to and away, however, does not attract sufficient attention from the social science literature on urban health and air pollution. This article fills this gap by proposing the concept of wind–human resonance, referring to both the capacity and intensity of the wind as two kinds of human–wind relationships in the weather-world. On the one hand, certain cleaning and blocking practices are carried out by residents, corresponding to the wind’s carrying capacity of air pollutants; fishing activities are altered according to the wind capacity in the atmo-oceanic dynamic. On the other hand, the intensity of the wind envelops an industrialized coastal village where community members engage with the oceanic wind that shapes the community identity (and affect). This framework of an entangled human–wind relationship is empirically examined through the case of the coastal Dalinpu area of Kaohsiung in southwestern Taiwan, a community that has successfully organized a campaign in the name of “southwest wind preservation” to terminate an industrial zone construction project. By revealing how wind is physically and affectively entangled into urban politics, this article aims to foreground the air flow study in volume geography in particular and the human–environment relationship in general.

Variation of wind load distribution on gable roof building

Wind forces and their impact on the structural integrity of roofs and walls are pivotal considerations in architectural and engineering design. This study discusses the effect of wind load on gable roof buildings with varying slopes. Gable roof structures find extensive application in industrial construction projects. Based on wind tunnels with rigid models, wind pressure distributions on gable roof buildings with different aspect ratios were measured simultaneously. Special attention is required for the safe design of the building. Information regarding the wind pressure coefficients on buildings is available in codes of practices of various countries dealing with wind loads; however, such information is very limited. The present study will examine the suitability of four building models with roof angles of 10º, 15º, 20º, and 25º and will be analyzed using IS 875 (Part 3), and various forces will be calculated. Then, the same buildings will be modeled using STAADPro/SAP2000, and the comparison of the analysis will be made. Further, a building situated at various slopes on a hill will be modeled using STAAD-Pro/SAP2000, and the variation of Wind Forces along the slope will be studied. The expected results of this study will be finding out the most critical slope of a gable roof on a building and reducing the effect of wind forces on it. Furthermore, the most savior location of a building along the hill slope will be investigated, and the ways to reduce the effect of these wind forces will be studied.

Determining the effective factors leading to incidence of human error accidents in industrial parks construction projects: results of a fuzzy Delphi survey

The implementation of construction projects is always associated with several incidents for various reasons. Previous research studies advocated that human errors are one of the main causes of accidents in these projects. This paper aims to determine the effective factors leading to the occurrence of accidents caused by human errors in Industrial Parks Construction Projects (IPCPs) based in Iran. For this purpose, four rounds of the fuzzy Delphi survey were conducted with the presence of fifteen experienced experts engaged in the HSEE (health, safety, environment and energy) department of Industrial Parks in Iran. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire were reviewed and confirmed. Based on the results of the Delphi survey, forty-one factors contributing to human errors in the implementation of IPCPs were determined and classified into nine main groups. The survey findings manifested that the identified effective factors have a strong effect on the occurrence of construction accidents caused by human errors. The results of this research study have provided various major project stakeholders and safety managers with a useful decision-aid tool to make more pragmatic decisions in managing, reducing and avoiding the occurrence of construction site accidents particularly caused by human errors associated with IPCPs.

The Economy of the Sino-Soviet Alliance.

Abstract This article examines the research literature on the economic aspects of the “Sino-Soviet Alliance”, which lasted from the end of the Chinese Civil war until the Sino-Soviet split (1949-1960/63). The Soviet and Eastern European contribution to China’s industrialization, called the “largest technology transfer in human history” by some, still awaits detailed examination. This article aims to structure the field as well as inspire future research. The included studies range from on-the-ground microstudies of engineers at specific industrial construction projects to macro-perspectives on economic exchange, trade and governmental negotiations. In contrast to classical Cold War perspectives, which assume a primacy of (geo-)politics, the paper builds on more recent studies, arguing that economic rationales mattered in both the split and the forging of the alliance. The literature review suggests that the room for manoeuvre of actors beyond the Kremlin and party leaderships has to be measured anew, and that the impact of the alliance on Eastern Europe awaits further research. Finally, the influence of the West with its technologies and world markets becomes visible when these apparently exclusive East-East relations are examined more closely.

Protection of Labor in Realizing Labor Welfare in Construction Projects (JIIPE Manyar Gresik Construction Project Study)

In the current era of 4.0, the job market opportunities for construction services continue to develop. The Java Integrated Industrial and Ports Estate (JIIPE) construction project, which is located in an industrial area in Gresik, is an area development project that is targeted to be able to absorb a workforce of 500 thousand people. The workforce has a role in national productivity and community welfare. Therefore, the human resources of the workforce must be empowered in order to have the competence, skills, and quality optimally. The Construction Services Law Number 2 of 2017 Article 70 stipulates that every construction worker who works in the Construction sector is required to have a Work Competency Certificate. determined based on the certificate held, in addition, labor distribution and protection of workers are also not optimal, for the welfare of workers in construction projects. In this study using descriptive qualitative research . Data were obtained through interview, documentation, observation and questionnaire techniques, sampling using purposive sampling technique. Based on the results of the study, it was found that (1) JIIPE provides opportunities for local residents to become part of the world of work by looking at the appropriate competencies, (2) workers in the JIIPE area are given the opportunity to develop their soft skills. skills by participating in competency development training with output certificates of expertise or competency certificates in accordance with their fields. Identifying and Evaluating the Essential Factors Affecting the Incidence of Site Accidents Caused by Human Errors in Industrial Parks Construction Projects.

In terms of safety management, the implementation of industrial parks construction projects (IPCPs) is incredibly challenging due to the special working conditions and the specific type of use of the buildings. On the other hand, the possibility of causing accidents in these areas based on human errors is high and important for project execution due to the risks of human errors and financial losses. Therefore, this study tries to fill this existing research gap by identifying and evaluating the effective key factors leading to the occurrence of construction accidents caused by human errors in the development of IPCPs. After a holistic review of the reported literature, four rounds of fuzzy Delphi survey were launched to capture the individual opinions and feedback from various project experts. Accordingly, 41 key factors affecting human errors in the implementation of industrial parks construction projects in Iran were identified and classified into nine main groups of wrong actions, observations/interpretations, planning/processes, equipment, organization, individual activities, environmental conditions, rescue, and technology. Then, the step-wise weight assessment ratio analysis (SWARA) method was adopted to rate and rank the identified factors of human errors in the implementation of IPCPs in Iran. The research findings indicated that among the elicited factors, time factor (0.1226), delayed interpretation (0.1080), and incorrect diagnosis/prediction (0.0990) are the three most crucial factors leading to human errors in the implementation of IPCPs in Iran. The results of this research study have provided various major project stakeholders with an effective decision-aid tool to make better-informed decisions in managing and reducing the occurrence of construction site accidents particularly caused by human errors associated with IPCPs.

An earned-value-analysis (EVA)-based project control framework in large-scale scaffolding projects using linear regression modeling

In large-scale industrial construction projects, scaffolding activities account for a large amount of the construction budget, and overlooking the scaffolding management can lead to budget overruns and schedule delays. The scaffolding activities can be categorized by classifications and types based on the nature of the scaffold builds. To ensure the project progress on track, it is critical to measure project performance based on project progress data. However, given the nature of scaffolding activities, it has been challenging to track and utilize the scaffolding data for analytical purposes. Therefore, this paper proposes a project control framework based on Earned-value analysis (EVA), in which linear regression models are used for productivity prediction. Three scenarios of productivity based on historical data (i.e., low, medium, and high productivity) are introduced. The proposed framework is implemented in a real construction project for validation. The results have shown that the proposed framework can efficiently evaluate the project progresses integrated with the EVA. The construction companies, such as general contractors and scaffolding sub-contractors, can use this method for site progress tracking. For future work, the EVA can be integrated with other non-linear predictive models (e.g., neural network) for productivity prediction. The EVA results can be integrated with data visualization to create situational awareness for construction practitioners.

A Predictive Analytics Framework for Mobile Crane Configuration Selection in Heavy Industrial Construction Projects

Predictive analytics have been used to improve efficiency and productivity in the construction industry by leveraging the insights from historical data with a variety of applications in project management. In the planning process of heavy industrial construction projects, mobile crane selection plays a critical role in the project’s success, and poor choice of mobile crane configurations can lead to unnecessary cost-overrun and delayed schedules. In this research, the authors propose a predictive analytics framework for crane configuration selection using combined heuristic search and artificial neural network (ANN) approaches for heavy industrial construction projects. The heuristic search allows the practitioners to select the crane configurations based on engineering rules, while the ANN model utilizes the historical project data to help select crane configurations. The K-fold cross-validation is conducted to validate the designed ANN model and improve the accuracy of predictions. The results from the cross-validation test set have shown 70% accuracy.
