The chemometric study of multi-elemental composition in cultivated rhubarb from Iraq Kurdish Region and Türkiye Siirt

ABSTRACT The concentrations of 30 elements (Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, P, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sn, Sb, Ba, La, Ce, Pt, Tl and Pb) in cultivated stems of rhubarb samples collected from the Kurdish region of Iraq (Sor, Rash, Karajar, Gara and Qalandar) and the Siirt region of Turkey (Pervari and Şirvan) were determined by Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass (ICP-MS) spectrometry after acid digestion by a microwave digestor (Berghof Speedwawe MWS-3). The analysis revealed that the levels of Mg, K and P in the samples found were higher than other metals. Conversely, the presence of metals such as Pt, Tl, Be and Ar was found to be at significantly lower concentrations. The levels of the elements determined in the cultivated rhubarb samples were subjected to chemometric analysis using correlation analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) techniques for the classification of metal content and the places of samples. Linear correlation coefficient values representing the element-to-element correlation data were analysed at the 95% and 99% confidence levels. The results of the study showed that the rhubarb samples could be classified into three groups based on their elemental compositions, using the PCA method. These findings were found to be consistent with the results obtained through cluster analysis (CA). This suggests that the chemometric techniques used in this study are effective for identifying patterns and relationships in complex datasets and could be useful for analysing other samples and identifying their origins. Overall, this study provides important insights into the elemental composition of Rhubarb samples and could have implications for food safety and quality control.

Removal of copper from aqueous solutions by biosorption onto pine sawdust

Untreated Pinus radiata sawdust was investigated for the removal of Cu+2 ions from aqueous solutions. The biomass was characterized by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass (ICP-MS) spectrometry and by Scanning Electron Microscopy with an Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), X-Ray crystalline powder Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, before and after adsorption. The influence of contact time (up to equilibrium), adsorbent dose (1–50 g/L), initial metal ion concentration (5–300 mg/L) and pH (2–8) on copper sorption efficiency was studied through batch experiments. The results demonstrated that adsorption equilibrium is reached in less than 2 h and the best conditions (Cu+2 removal percentage, 93.4% and adsorption capacity, 0.82 mg/g) were achieved by increasing the adsorbent dose up to 5 g/L and the solution pH up to 7, and decreasing the initial metal concentration to 5 mg/L. The adsorption was optimized by means of a Doehlert experimental design analyzing the influence of adsorbent dose (5–15 g/L) and copper initial concentration (5–45 mg/L) on adsorption efficiency. Kinetic data were satisfactorily fitted to the second-order kinetic model. Intraparticle diffusion model demonstrated that different stages are involved in the adsorption process. Langmuir isotherms fitted satisfactorily the copper bioadsorption equilibrium data. Desorption studies achieved high efficiencies up to 94.5% and the possibility of sawdust regeneration was studied with four adsorption-desorption cycles. Thus, this study evidenced that sawdust is a promising efficient, renewable and economic adsorbent for metal removal and its use for that purpose constitutes an alternative for its management and valorization.

Cobalt nanoparticles cause allergic contact dermatitis inhumans.

Cobalt (Co) causes allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) and the emerging use of Co nanoparticles (CoNPs) warrants gaining further insight into its potential to elicit ACD in sensitized individuals. The aims of the study were to clarify to what extent CoNPs may elicit ACD responses in participants with Co contact allergy, and to evaluate whether the nanoparticles cause a distinct immune response compared with cobalt chloride (CoCl2) in the skin reactions. Fourteen individuals with Co contact allergy were exposed to CoNPs, CoCl2, a Co-containing hard-metal disc (positive control), and an empty test chamber (negative control) by patch testing. Allergic responses were evaluated clinically by a dermatologist at Days 2, 4 and 7. At Day 2, patch-test chambers were removed, and remaining test-substance and skin-wipe samples were collected for inductive-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. Additionally, skin biopsies were taken from patch-test reactions at Day 4 for quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction analysis, histopathology and ICP-MS analysis of Co skin penetration. Patch testing with CoNPs elicited allergic reactions in Co-sensitized individuals. At all timepoints, clinical assessment revealed significantly lower frequencies of positive patch-test reactions to CoNPs compared with CoCl2 or to the positive control. CoNPs elicited comparable immune responses to CoCl2. Chemical analysis of Co residues in patch-test filters, and on skin, shows lower doses for CoNPs compared with CoCl2. CoNPs potently elicit immune responses in Co-sensitized individuals. Even though patch testing with CoNPs resulted in a lower skin dose than CoCl2, identical immunological profiles were present. Further research is needed to identify the potential harm of CoNPs to human health.

Transfer of elements into boreal forest ants at a former uranium mining site

Ants can influence ecological processes, such as the transfer of elements or radionuclides, in several ways. For example, they redistribute materials while foraging and maintaining their nests and have an important role in terrestrial food webs. Quantitative data of the transfer of elements into ants is needed, e.g., for developing improved radioecological models. In this study, samples of red wood ants (genus Formica), nest material, litter and soil were collected from a former uranium mining site in Eastern Finland. Concentrations of 33 elements were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectroscopy/Optical Emission Spectroscopy. Estimated element concentrations in spruce needles were used as a proxy for studying the transfer of elements into ants via aphids because spruces host the most important aphid farms in boreal forests. Empirically determined organism/medium concentration ratios (CRs) are commonly used in radioecological models. Ant/soil CRs were calculated and the validity of the fundamental assumption behind the of use of CRs (linear transfer) was evaluated. Elements that accumulated in ants in comparison to other compartments were cadmium, potassium, phosphorus, sulfur, and zinc. Ant uranium concentrations were low in comparison to soil, litter, or nest material but slightly elevated in comparison to spruce needles. Ant element concentrations were quite constant regardless of the soil concentrations. Non-linear transfer models could therefore describe the soil-to-ant transfer better than conventional CRs.

Aqueous solubility of Zn incorporated into Mg-Al-layered double hydroxides

Hydrotalcite minerals are layered double hydroxides (LDH) which play an important role in immobilizing hazardous compounds to decontaminate industrial wastewaters. The stability of an LDH is mostly evaluated in terms of its low solubility in water. However, the solubility of divalent trace metals immobilized by Mg-Al-type LDHs is not well known. Hydrotalcites containing Zn in solid solution, (Mg+Zn)3-Al-LDH, were synthesized by alkaline co-precipitation. A series of eleven LDH phases with Zn mole fractions XZn = Zn/(Mg+Zn) of 0–1 were characterized by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TGA), scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, and inductively coupled plasma mass (ICP-MS) spectrometry. The XRD analysis provided sharp characteristic spacings for d003 and d006 which occurred for all samples, confirming a layered LDH structure. Cell parameters (a, c) obeyed Vegard’s law and confirmed the formation of a regular solid-solution series without a mixing gap. An aqueous equilibrium time was determined by kinetic dissolution experiments. Steady-state solubility occurred after 120 days, but the experiments continued up to 240 days. The XRD and SEM/TEM analyses indicated no phase changes during the long-term dissolution experiments; neither were phase impurities detected after 240 days. The solubility products of the Mg- and Zn-bearing endmember compositions were calculated from experimentally determined total cation and anion concentrations using the Visual Minteq code for considering element speciation and ion pairing. The solubility product decreased as the Zn mole fraction increased, suggesting that the Zn-bearing LDH phases were more stable than the pure Mg3-Al-LDHs. Solid-solution aqueous-solution thermodynamic equilibrium modeling using the Lippmann “total solubility product” approach and applying Lippmann diagrams with logarithmic x-axes revealed a log-linear decrease in aqueous Zn solubility. The results are promising for remediation of metal-bearing liquid wastes because the metals that co-precipitated with the LDH were more strongly retained and, therefore, less soluble than the hydroxides or carbonates of the trace metal.

Quantification of mineral and toxic elements in milk of dairy cows by ICP-MS

Milk is an important component of mammalian metabolism which included micro and macronutrients. The objective of this study was to survey the concentrations of minerals and toxic elements in cow milk samples by inductively coupled plasma-mass (ICP-MS). In this study, it was analyzed the content of sodium, magnesium, potassium, calcium, titanium, chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc, selenium, arsenic, cadmium, thallium, lead in cow milk samples (n=25) collected from Kahramanmaraş province of Turkey. The highest levels recorded for potassium, calcium and sodium with average concentrations of 1587.36, 1157.98, 643.34 mg L-1, respectively. The results revealed that there was no toxic element contamination in cow milk samples. Regular element analysis of cow's milk, which is the most widely used milk in dairy industry, is important for health.

Spectroscopic and chemical investigations on volatile fission and activation products within the fuel-cladding interface of irradiated pressurised water reactor fuel rod segments

Abstract. In Germany, the present waste management concept foresees the direct disposal of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) in deep geological repositories for high-level waste available by 2050, at best. Until then, SNF is encapsulated in dual-purpose casks and stored in dry interim storage facilities. Licenses for both casks and facilities will expire after 40 years following loading of the cask and emplacement of the first cask in the storage location. Yet, due to considerable delays in the site selection process and the estimated duration for construction and commissioning of a final repository of at least 2 decades, a prolonged dry interim storage of SNF is inevitable (ESK, 2015). Concerning these considerable timespans, integrity of the cladding is of utmost importance regarding the ultimately conditioning of the fuel assemblies for final disposal. Various processes strain the structural integrity of Zircaloy cladding during reactor operation and beyond such as delayed hydride cracking, fuel-cladding chemical interactions or irradiation damage induced by α-emitters present in the fuel pellet's rim zone (Ewing, 2015). Especially with higher burn-up, the gap between fuel and cladding closes and results in the formation of an interaction layer, in which precipitates of fission and activation products are present, displaying an interface for degradation processes. For chemical analysis and speciation of these agglomerates, Zircaloy-4 and SNF specimens were sampled from fuel rod segments irradiated in commercial pressurised water reactors during the 1980s. Zircaloy-4 specimens were taken from an UOX (50.4 GWdtHM-1) and mixed oxide fuel (MOX) (38.0 GWdtHM-1). In addition, SNF fragments were sampled from the closed gap of both fuel types to examine volatile activation and fission products, which had been segregated from the centre to the pellet periphery during irradiation and thus contribute to the possible chemically assisted cladding degradation effect of the precipitates within the fuel-cladding interface. Spectroscopic analysis of precipitates within the interface layer between fuel and cladding were performed by optical microscopy, X-ray absorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, as well as by energy-dispersive scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the radionuclide inventory of the respective Zircaloy-4, fuel and interaction layers was determined using liquid scintillation counting, γ-spectroscopy, gas mass spectrometry, ion chromatography and inductive-coupled plasma mass spectrometry and compared to results received by MCNP/CINDER and webKORIGEN calculations. In this study, we provide results regarding the speciation and chemical composition of previously identified Cs-U-O-Zr-Cl-I bearing compounds found in the interaction layer of irradiated nuclear fuel and inventory analyses of radionuclides present therein, with particular emphasis on Cl-36 and I-129. Furthermore, the agglomerates within the fuel-cladding interface were characterised for the first time utilising synchrotron radiation-based Cl K-edge and I K-edge measurements, resulting in compounds with structural similarities to CsCl and CsI. The outcomes obtained from this study provide further insights into the complex chemistry within the fuel-cladding interface with respect to the aging management and integrity of SNF under the conditions of interim storage. In future studies we will examine whether the different compounds at the fuel-cladding interface have the potential to affect the mechanical properties of Zircaloy cladding.

Oxidative stress indices in ASD children in Sub-Sahara Africa

BackgroundThe pathogenesis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains a medical challenge even in the developed world. Although genetics and epigenetic factors have been variously indicted as major causes of the disorder, development of oxidative stress especially in the formative years of children has equally gained prominence as an etiological basis of the disorder. Oxidative stress is characterized by the production of excessive amounts of free radicals, decreased levels of antioxidants with the attendant imbalance in oxidant/antioxidant ratio. This study was designed to determine the levels of essential metals [magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu)] and toxic metal, lead (Pb), and generation of oxidative stress by their abnormal interaction.MethodTwenty-five children clinically diagnosed for ASD according to DSM-IV-TR and 25 neuro-typical (NT) children (controls), (aged 5.96 ± 1.40 years and 6.18 ± 2.59 years respectively) were recruited for this study. Essential and toxic metals were analyzed using induction-coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS); oxidative stress markers [malondialdehyde (MDA), total plasma peroxidase (TPP), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC)] were determined using appropriate biochemical methods. Oxidative stress index (OSI) was calculated.ResultsThe levels of TPP and TAC were significantly reduced while MDA was higher in ASD compared to NT. Although OSI was higher in ASD, the difference was not significant. Pb (lead) concentration was significantly increased while Mg, Zn, and Cu levels were reduced significantly in ASD compared to NT. A significant negative correlation between Mg and OSI (r = − 0.438; p = 0.029) was observed in NT.ConclusionReduction in Zn and Mg levels with a concurrent increase in Pb in children with ASD in this study may be the basis of inadequate TAC manifesting as increased MDA and reduced TPP levels. The attendant imbalance in oxidant/antioxidant ratio may result in abnormality in neuronal transduction leading to the abnormal cognitive and speech functions characteristic of ASD.

Environmental Aspect of the Cement Manufacturing in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains (Southeastern Poland)

The research area located in south-eastern Poland is exposed to alkaline pressure from a cement plant in Nowiny, which has been operating there since 1960. Both biotic and abiotic components of the natural environment remain in the zone of the plant’s negative impact. Their reaction, described according to the concept of geo- and bioindicators, provides valuable information on the state of the natural environment in this area. In 2016–2018, the properties of precipitation were being investigated by determining its pH, EC (specific electrolytic conductivity), and chemical composition in terms of the presence of selected heavy metals. Additionally, the chemical composition of samples of two-year-old pine needles, bark, and wood, as well as soil taken from the immediate vicinity of the cement plant, was analyzed. The analysis performed using the Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer-Time-of-Flight (ICP-MS-TOF) showed the presence of heavy metals. The highest contents were recorded in soils (Pb 123 mg·kg−1; Cr 138 mg·kg−1; Cu 18 mg·kg−1; Zn 699 mg·kg−1), while the lowest ones were found in the wooden cores of drilled trees (Pb 0.1 mg·kg−1; Cr 1 mg·kg−1; Cu 0.1 mg·kg−1; Zn 4.1 mg·kg−1). On the basis of the research conducted on precipitation, it was found that the pH and EC values were increased, and the presence of heavy metals (Pb, Cr, Ni, and Cu) indicating a local source of pollution was indicated.

Specific patterns of hair content of toxic metal in foreign students of the peoples’ friendship university of Russia (RUDN university)

The aim of the study was to perform a comparative analysis of hair content of toxic metal in foreign students originating from different regions.Material and methods. An examination of first-year students of the RUDN University originating from Russia, Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America was performed in the study. Assessment of hair aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb) and tin (Sn) content was undertaken using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry.Results. The obtained data demonstrate that the highest levels of Al, Cd, and Pb were observed in students originating from Africa and Latin America. The most prominent mercury accumulation was detected in subjects from Latin America. In turn, hair As content in foreign students from all regions exceeded the respective Russian values by a factor of more than two. No significant group difference in hair tin content was observed. In regression models, prior habitation in Asia, Africa, and Latin America is considered as a significant predictor of elevated hair Hg content. African origin was also associated with higher Pb levels in hair. In the case of cadmium, a direct relationship between prior habitation in Latin America tended to be significant.Conclusion. The obtained data revealed increased accumulation of toxic metals, especially, Hg, Pb, and Cd in the hair of foreign first-year students originating from Africa and Latin America, that may have a significant adverse effect on health and educational performance. At the same time, further studies aimed at investigating the particular contribution of toxic metal overload to health effects in RUDN University students are required.

Spectroscopic and Chromatographic Characterization of Crude Natural Shilajit from Himachal Pradesh, India

Background: Shilajit is a natural herbomineral ethnomedicinal substance used in Indian traditional systems of medicine since centuries as a rejuvenator, anti-aging and for several health conditions/ailments. Shilajit composition has exhibited considerable variability from different geographical sites and hence there is a need to determine its composition and concentration of bioactive compounds to correlate it with pharmacological activities. Objective: To determine the chemical and mineral constitution of Shilajit obtained from Himachal Pradesh, India. Methods: In the present study, Shilajit was chemically characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Inductively-Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), UV-Vis spectroscopy and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis. Results: Chemical elucidation of crude Shilajit from three geographical sites revealed the presence of humic acid, fulvic acid, dibenzo-α-pyrones and several other organic constituents in crude Shilajit. The presence of metals/trace elements was evident in Shilajit samples with potassium being predominant followed by magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron and aluminium. Conclusion: Characterization of Shilajit from Himachal Pradesh supported the structural details of Shilajit already known and also revealed variations in key chemical parameters which might be due to geographical variations and ecological conditions which determine its natural synthesis.

Zinc Oxide Recovery from Solid Waste of Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD) Using Hydrometallurgical Method

Indonesia coal ash is predicted to reach 10.8 million tons in the year 2020 but its utilization is still limited. In the last decade, coal ash has become a promising REY source candidate. To determine the potency of REY in Indonesia coal ash, information about element concentration and mineralogy of the ash is essential. In this study, coal ash samples were taken from Paiton-2, Pacitan, Rembang, and Tanjung Jati coal-fired power plants. Element content and mineralogy were analyzed using Inductive Couple Plasma Mass Spectroscopy/Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-MS/AES), X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) and petrographic. The results showed that coal fly ash and bottom ash contains critical REY in the range of 38% to 41% with Coutlook larger than one. XRD analysis showed that both fly ash and bottom ash have similar mineral phases with slightly different concentrations. The mineral phase is dominated by amorphous glass, quartz, Fe-bearing minerals, and unburned carbon. The amorphous glass phase in fly ash is in the range of 23 to 34% while in bottom ash between 14 and 34%. Unburned carbon content in fly ash and bottom ashes are 7-13% and 7-19%, respectively. Fe-bearing mineral content in fly ash is 15-20% and bottom ash is 13-20%. In addition, Indonesia coal ash has a higher Heavy-REY enrichment factor than Light-REY. The Enrichment Factor of HREY in fly ash is as much as 1.3 times (in average) of the bottom ash.

Ameliorative effect of curcumin on lead-induced hematological and hepatorenal toxicity in a rat model.

Lead (Pb) is a ubiquitous toxic heavy metal that inflicts numerous clinical consequences on humans. Curcumin is the principal component of turmeric, which is reported to have antioxidative properties. This study aimed at evaluating the ameliorative effects of curcumin on Pb-induced hepatorenal toxicity in a rat model. Thirty-six male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned into five groups with 12 rats in the control (normal saline) and six rats each for the lead-treated group (LTG) (50 mg/kg lead acetate [Pb acetate] for 4 weeks), recovery group (50 mg/kg Pb acetate for 4 weeks and left with no treatment for another 4 weeks), treatment group 1 (Cur100) (50 mg/kg Pb acetate for 4 weeks, followed by 100 mg/kg curcumin for 4 weeks), and treatment group 2 (Cur200) (50 mg/kg Pb acetate for 4 weeks, followed by 200 mg/kg curcumin for 4 weeks). All the experimental groups received oral treatments via orogastric-tube on alternate days. Pb concentration in the liver and kidney of the rats were evaluated using inductive-coupled plasma mass spectrometry techniques. Pb-administered rats revealed significant alteration in oxidative status and increased Pb concentration in their liver and kidney with obvious reduction of hemogram and increased in leukogram as well as aberration in histological architecture of the liver and kidney. However, treatment with curcumin reduces the tissue Pb concentrations and ameliorates the above mention alterations. The results in this study suggested that curcumin attenuates Pb-induced hepatorenal toxicity via chelating activity and inhibition of oxidative stress.

Geochemistry of the Lublin Formation from the Lublin Coal Basin: Implications for weathering intensity, palaeoclimate and provenance

The Lublin Formation (upper Westphalian A and Westphalian B) is the main coal-bearing series of the Lublin Coal Basin (LCB). So far, few geochemical studies of the Carboniferous of the LCB have been performed, and there is almost no data on the geochemistry of this series. This paper presents geochemical data for 118 samples from the Lublin Formation, from the central part of the LCB. Major oxide concentrations (Al2O3, SiO2, Fe2O3, P2O5, K2O, MgO, CaO, Na2O, K2O, MnO, TiO2, Cr2O3, Ba) were obtained using an X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Trace and major elements (Zr, Th, Sc, La, U, Cu, Sr, Rb, Ni, Fe, Mn, Ca, Mg, K, Na) were analysed using inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry.Concentrations of the major and trace elements showed significant diversity, especially in the Westphalian B deposits. The Chemical Index of Alteration, Plagioclase Index of Alternation, and Weathering Index of Parker values, as well as the Rb/Sr, Sr/Cu, C and Th/U ratios of the studied samples suggest a high degree of chemical weathering of the source rocks and a prevailing warm, humid climate with some arid episodes. Based on indicators such as Al2O3/TiO2, TiO2/Zr and La/Th, it is suggested that all the studied samples from the Lublin Formation of the LCB were derived from felsic to intermediate igneous rocks, while the Th/Sc ratio suggests a mixed source for these sediments.

Co-precipitation approach to measure amount of 238U in copper to sub-ppt level using ICP-MS

Inductively coupled plasma mass (ICP-MS) spectroscopy is widely used for screening materials of low background detectors in dark matter and double beta decay searches due to its high sensitivity to trace $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th. This work describes a novel co-precipitation approach to measure the amount of $^{238}$U in high-purity copper to sub-ppt level. Such an approach allows the pre-concentration of U and removal of the matrix, by selecting a proper precipitator to co-precipitate with $^{238}$U and using excess ammonia water to separate the uranium hydroxide from copper by forming water-soluble tetra-amminecopper (II). The isotope dilution method and standard addition method were both used to mitigate the matrix effect and cross-check each other. The latter was also used to measure the recovery efficiency of $^{238}$U by using $^{233}$U as the tracer. The method detection limit (MDL) reached $\sim$0.1 pg $^{238}$U /g Cu for both methods while the recovery efficiency of uranium robustly remains 65\%--85\%. Various sources of interference in the ICP-MS analysis were thoroughly evaluated, and the contamination from reagents were found to be the dominant factor that affected the MDL. Further purification will allow significant improvements in the MDL. This co-precipitate approach can be easily extended to measure $^{232}$Th by using $^{229}$Th as the tracer.

PM10: a potential source of secondary raw materials

The increase of heavy metal concentrations in atmospheric aerosols, due to both natural and anthropogenic emissions, keeps high the interest around the resulting damages to health and to climate change. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of using the atmospheric aerosol as a source of secondary raw materials, by estimating its contents in economically significant elements. We characterised the geochemical composition of the atmospheric aerosol of urban (Firenze), sub-urban (Arezzo), and rural (Piancastagnaio, Siena) areas in Tuscany, analysing common major, minor, and trace constituents of silicate rocks using inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission and mass spectrometry (ICP-AES and ICP-MS). We alsodetermined the radiogenic isotope composition of the aerosols (Sr, Nd, and Pb) through thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). Although the results indicate that elemental quantities are not at exploitable grade, we think that this challenge has more advantages than simply the recovery of inorganic pollutants dispersed into the atmosphere: with appropriate technologies, the designed industrialplant could also serve to drastically reduce the content of Volatile Organic Compounds occurring in atmosphere, especially in urban areas. Considering this perspective, benefits undoubtedly overwhelm the high-costs of the business, providing the most precious commodity for life: clean air for the next generations to be living in our Planet.

Ultrasound assisted fabrication of a novel optode base on a triazine based Schiff base immobilized on TEOS for copper detection

This work introduces novel selective and sensitive optical sensor based on a nano sized triazine based Schiff base (H2L) immbolized on a transparent glass substrate through the sol–gel process to detection of copper (II) ions in aqueous solutions. This sensor can determine the copper (II) in the range of 8.54 × 10−8–1.0 × 10−5 mol L−1 with a low detection limit of 1.53 × 10−8 mol L−1. The optimized geometry of H2L and its copper complex was obtained based on DFT/B3LYP levels of theory with B3LYP/6-311 + G(d,p) and LANL2DZ/6-311 + G(d,p) basis sets respectively. The calculated electronic properties of them including the molecular orbital, Mulliken population analysis, contour of electrostatic potential, and molecular electrostatic potential map confirmed the behavior of the sensor. Some advantage of the fabricated sensor such as high selectivity, sensitivity, short response time, easy production, fast regeneration, low cost, being portable and user friendly can make it a good choice to detection of Cu(II) ion in various application. The suggested sensor was revealed excellent sensitivity in the natural samples that confirmed by Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass (ICP) spectrometry method.

CHANGES OF NONESSENTIAL TRACE ELEMENTS LEVELS IN WHOLE BLOOD OF END STAGE RENAL DISEASE ADULT PATIENTS

Aims: Accumulation of trace elements occurs in conditions of decreased or termination of kidneys functions. In some conditions increased trace elements can obtain toxic features. On other hand, researches are showing that concentration of some trace elements could be decreased in ERSD patients, too. The most important factor affecting trace element concentration in ERSD patient is the degree of renal failure and using of replacement therapy.
 Materials and methods: We determined the concentration of microelements (beryllium, boron, aluminum, vanadium, chromium, nickel, arsenic, rubidium, strontium, cadmium, cesium, barium, thallium and lead) in whole blood of 41 ESRD patients with chronic kidney disease stage VD, who were treated with hemodialysis / hemodiafiltration and in 61 conditionally healthy donors. Determination of whole bloods trace elements content was conducted using inductive coupled plasma mass- spectrometry (ICPMS).
 Results: It is determinate that levels of beryllium, boron, aluminum, vanadium, chromium, strontium, cadmium, barium, thallium and lead is reliable increased in ESRD patients. Decreased levels are observed for nickel, arsenic, cesium and rubidium.
 Conclusions: ESRD is accompanied with substantial and multidirectional changes of trace elements blood levels. During researches has shown that in ESRD patients processes of trace elements accumulation are prevailing over elimination ones.

High-Density Lipoprotein-like Magnetic Nanostructures (HDL-MNS): Theranostic Agents for Cardiovascular Disease

We report the development of potential theranostic agents for cardiovascular disease that are based on high-density lipoprotein-like magnetic nanostructures (HDL-MNS). The HDL-MNS offer prospects for diagnosis via noninvasive magnetic resonance imaging for anatomic detection and also serve as effective cholesterol efflux agents to address atherosclerotic vascular lesions. The HDL-MNS are synthesized by adding phospholipids and the HDL-defining apolipoprotein A1 to the surface of magnetic nanostructures (MNS) to mimic some aspects of natural HDL particles. From a diagnostic perspective, HDL-MNS show a 5 times higher contrast (r2 relaxivity up to 383 mM–1 s–1) in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) than commercially available T2 MRI contrast agents (e.g., Ferumoxytol).
