Application of ICP-OES for determination of mercury species in environmental samples

Direct determination of mercury species in real environmental samples is challenging due to their trace concentrations and low ionisation energy. In this investigation, a microwave-assisted and aqua regia digestion method is proposed for the analysis of trace inorganic mercury. Measurements were performed using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method in soil, digestate and waste samples. The detection limits of the proposed method were found to be 0.03 and 0.115 mg/kg for mercury at 184.9 and 194.2 nm, respectively. The accuracy of the method with respect to the systematic and constant errors was confirmed by the analysis of certified reference material (CRM) (> 95 % recovery with < 15 % relative standard deviation RSD). The method was successfully applied for the determination of mercury in solid wastes listed in the Decree on Burdening of Soil with Waste Spreading and the Decree on the Treatment of Biodegradable Waste and the Use of Compost or Digestate in the Republic of Slovenia (Official Gazzette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 34/08 and 61/11 and No 99/13, 56/15 and 56/18).

Voltammetric co-determination of lead and copper in gunshot residue based on iron oxide particle/spent coffee grounds-modified electrode.

A novel electrochemical sensor was developed for the detection of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) ions using spent coffee grounds decorated with iron oxide particles (FeO/SCG). The FeO-decorated SCG was used to modify a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). FeO, SCG, and FeO/SCG were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical properties of the modified electrode were characterized by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electrode modifications increased theactive surface area and electron transfer and enhanced the accumulation of the target analyte. In the optimal condition, the developed sensor showed linear ranges of 1.0µg L-1-0.05mg L-1 and 0.05mg L-1-0.8mg L-1 for Pb2+ and 5.0µg L-1-0.1mg L-1 and 0.1mg L-1-0.8mg L-1 for Cu2+. The limit of detection (LOD) was 1.0µg L-1 for Pb2+ and 2.4µg L-1 for Cu2+. The developed sensor was successfully applied to determine Pb2+ and Cu2+ in bullet holes. The results were in good agreement with those obtained by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES).

Development Of A Distance Education Experiment Set That Allows The Ratio Of Chemical Components In Hydroponic Farming Nutrient Liquid To Be Estimated By Artificial Intelligence

With the increase and development of electronic systems, especially with the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) applications, AI has begun to meet many of humanity's needs. Due to the rapidly increasing human population and the decreasing availability of fertile land, the use of AI has become necessary in rapidly expanding soilless agriculture practices. One of the biggest challenges in soilless agriculture is the inability to accurately determine the chemical content of nutrient solutions in real-time. In this study, the results of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and electrical conductivity (EC) were obtained for 300 hydroponic agriculture nutrient solutions containing different ratios of Mg, K, and P minerals. The obtained data were evaluated using artificial neural networks in Matlab® software, with ICP-OES results as inputs and EC results as outputs (3 inputs-1 output). The results were uploaded to the cloud system using Firebase, and an EC meter capable of communicating with the cloud was developed. The results of the produced EC meter were compared with the data in the cloud, and attempts were made to determine the element ratios in the nutrient solution content of 300 samples using artificial neural networks. The Pearson Correlation Constant (R) was found to be 0.860 for all data. According to the test results obtained with the produced system, the success rate of the artificial neural network in detecting the chemical composition of the nutrient solution ranged from 53.2% to 87.4% depending on the chemical ratios in the nutrient solution.

Investigating the elemental composition of Egyptian glauconite sediments by applying BCR sequential extraction procedure and some single extractants

This study assesses the elemental composition of Egyptian glauconite sediments, focusing on potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and macronutrients. The primary aim is to evaluate the feasibility of utilizing these sediments as a natural source of potassium for agricultural purposes, besides conventional chemical fertilizers like potassium sulfate. To quantify elemental content, chemical analysis was employed across five distinct grain size fractions after grinding glauconite rock. The assessment included potassium, calcium, sodium, and PTE concentrations, utilizing potassium chloride (KCl) and ammonium acetate lactate (AL Solution) as single extractants, and the BCR extraction protocol, in addition to measuring the pseudo-total content of these elements. Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) facilitated a comparative analysis of elemental concentrations. Results indicate PTE concentrations within European Union regulations, with an absence of cadmium. Glauconite samples contain approximately 3–3.3% potassium by weight, alongside significant amounts of essential macronutrients (calcium, magnesium) and micronutrients (copper, nickel, zinc) crucial for agriculture. BCR sequential extraction protocol results closely align with or slightly surpass pseudo-total content results. Notably, the AL Solution demonstrates high efficiency compared to KCl or acetic acid in the first step of the BCR method. BCR sequential protocol provides valuable insights into various elemental forms and potential mobility. Overall, this study reveals that glauconite has the potential to serve as a promising alternative potassium fertilizer without causing adverse environmental impacts.

Adsorption and Incorporation of AgNPs Mediated by Seed Priming in Cultivated Taify Pomegranate: Integrated Approaches

A novel approach known as seed priming has been developed to improve seed germination and, ultimately, increase growth and yield. For high-value crops like pomegranates (Punica granatum) in high-altitude regions like the Taif area, affordable, sustainable, and efficient seed treatments are yet to be discovered. In this study, we employed a green synthesis method using pomegranate peel and coffee ground extracts to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at a concentration of 80 mg/mL. These AgNPs were then utilized to prime pomegranate seeds for 24 h. Furthermore, a chemical reduction method using trisodium citrate was used for comparison. The adsorption of NPs was verified using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), while their incorporation was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We further validated our EM results with X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). According to the findings of this study, AgNPs were observed to be present within seeds even after undergoing storage during priming. There is a possibility that the results obtained could potentially contribute to maintaining the quality of crops in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.

Mobility of Zn and Cu in Bentonites: Implications for Environmental Remediation.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mobility of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) and their impact on the properties of bentonites and unfrozen water content. Limited research in this area necessitates further analysis to prevent the negative effects of metal interactions on bentonite effectiveness. Tests involved American (SWy-3, Stx-1b) and Slovak (BSvk) bentonite samples with Zn or Cu ion exchange. Sequential extraction was performed using the Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) method. Elemental content was analyzed via inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Unfrozen water content was measured using nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results showed a significant influence of the main cation (Zn or Cu) on ion mobility, with toxic metal concentrations increasing mobility and decreasing residual fractions. Mobile Zn fractions increased with larger particle diameters, lower clay content, and shorter interplanar spacing, while the opposite was observed for Cu. Zn likely accumulated in larger clay pores, while Cu was immobilized in the bentonite complex. The stability of Zn or Cu ions increased with higher clay content or specific surface area. Residual Zn or Cu fractions were highest in uncontaminated bentonites with higher unfrozen water content, suggesting the potential formation of concentrated solutions in sub-zero temperatures, posing a threat to the clay-water environment, especially in cold regions.

Advancing circular economy: A study of drinking water sludge for potential uses

The high demand for drinking water has increased the by-products from treatment plants, notably during coagulation-flocculation, leading to substantial sludges' accumulation. This study aims to focus on the characterization of drinking water treatment sludge (DWTS) batches from the three last years and statically studying it's uniformity, as exploring potential repurposing options. The samples were characterized using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Loss On Ignition (LOI), and Granulometric analysis. The results evinced that DWTS have a sandy nature, the organic fraction takes third of the DWTS’ chemical composition, the amount of Al2O3 + SiO2 + Fe2O3 is slightly different, with 55.84, 57.47, and 56.14 % for DWTS21, DWTS22, and DWTS23 respectively, as per ANOVA results, which exhibited the consistency sludge composition among the samples, providing valuable insights into repurposing DWTS, and contributing to sustainable and eco-friendly practices in the construction industry especially DWTS21, which presents higher content of CaO with 2.95 %.

Simple Method for Calcium Determination in Crude Oil Emulsion Using Digital Image Colorimetry

A portable device for digital image colorimetry (DIC) is reported for the determination of Ca in crude oil emulsions. ASTM D4807 was used for sample preparation for the isolation of saline species containing Ca. DIC was evaluated based on the complexation reactions with Ca using calcein, murexide, and calcon. Partial least squares (PLS) provided the best determination coefficients (higher than 0.990) for all complexing reagents. Significant interference of Mg was observed for the determination of Ca using calcein. PLS models with the lowest root mean square error of cross validation (RMSECV) values were obtained for murexide and calcon for a concentration of 0.250 mmol L−1 at pH of 13. The best conditions for camera focal length were 11 and 2 mm for murexide and calcon. For light intensity, the optimized conditions for murexide and calcon was 180 lux. Stabilities of color complexes over the time were 30 and 15 min for murexide and calcon, respectively. DIC/murexide provided the lowest root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and a linear response was observed from 0.5 to 10 mg L−1 Ca and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was lower than 10%. Significant differences were not observed between the results obtained by DIC/murexide and those obtained by microwave-assisted wet digestion (MAWD) with determination by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). A limit of quantification of 0.50 mg kg−1 Ca were obtained using DIC/murexide. This approach is an alternative and useful method for the determination of Ca in crude oil samples, with advantages of miniaturization, low cost, and ease of operation.

Investigating UV-Irradiation Parameters in the Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles from Water Hyacinth Leaf Extract: Optimization for Future Sensor Applications.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be produced safely and greenly using water hyacinth, an invasive aquatic plant, as a reducing agent. This study aimed to optimize the UV-irradiation parameters for the synthesis of AgNPs from water hyacinth leaf extract. The study varied the reaction time and pH levels and added a stabilizing agent to the mixture. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized using UV-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The findings revealed that the optimal conditions for synthesizing AgNPs were achieved by adjusting the pH level to 8.5, adding starch as a stabilizing agent, and exposing the mixture to UV-A radiation for one hour. These conditions resulted in the smallest size and highest quantity of AgNPs. Furthermore, the synthesized AgNP colloids remained stable for up to six months. This study highlights the potential of utilizing water hyacinth as a sustainable and cost-effective reducing agent for AgNP synthesis, with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, drug development, catalysis, and sensing detection.

Quality and healthy aspects of Lider cheese at different stages of ripening

Lider cheese is a commercial full- fat semi-hard cheese produced from pasteurized goat`s milk in mountain area of Nikšić, Montenegro. The aim of this paper is to characterize the change of protein and fatty acid profiles, mineral content and antioxidant potential during the period of one month of its ripening. Proteolysis was monitored using electrophoresis of total extracts and water-soluble fractions under reducing conditions. Fatty acid profiles were determined by gas chromatography whereas the mineral content of cheese at different stage of ripening was determined by Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) for macroelements and Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for microelements, respectively. One month of ripening of Lider cheese is characterized by a relatively slow proteolysis which can be attributed to intensive lose of moisture, by the increase in desirable fatty acid content and consequently by the improvement of fatty acid healthy indices. After 30 days of ripening, mainly due to the degradation of αs-CN, the WSN/ TN and TCA/TN contents increased from 4.69 % to 6.06 % and 1.15 % to 1.90 %, respectively. One- month-old cheese had improved indexes of lipid quality as well as improved reducing power and ability to scavenge free radicals. Ripening did not affect mineral content of cheese if it is expressed on dry matter basis. According to obtained results, the optimal ripening period of Lider cheese is 15 days.

VERIFIKASI KUALITAS ANALISIS MANGAN MENGGUNAKAN TEKNIK ICP-OES DALAM SAMPEL AIR MINUM

Drinking water quality, including the levels of dissolved metals, is an important public health consideration. Manganese (Mn) is a naturally occurring metal that can be present in drinking water sources, and excessive intake of Mn can have adverse health effects. The objective of this study was to verify the performance of the analytical method for the determination of manganese (Mn) concentration in drinking water samples using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) techniques at the PT XYZ Laboratory. The method verification included tests for analyte identity confirmation, linearity, precision, accuracy, as well as the determination of the Method Detection Limit (MDL) and Limit of Quantification (LOQ). The verification results showed that the ICP-OES method met the established performance requirements. The linearity test yielded a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9998, fulfilling the criteria of r ≥ 0.995. The percent relative standard deviation (% RSD) value in the precision test was 1.41%, meeting the requirement of % RSD ≤ 2/3 % CV Horwitz. The accuracy test provided an average percent recovery of 98.66%, which is within the acceptable range of 85-120%. The determined MDL was 0.0006 mg/L, while the LOQ was 0.002 mg/L, both meeting the criteria of MDL < spiked concentration < 10 MDL and LOQ < environmental quality standard. In conclusion, the method for the determination of Mn concentration in drinking water using ICP-OES has been verified and can be used for routine analysis at the PT. XYZ Laboratory, supporting the monitoring and control of Mn levels in drinking water to ensure public health protection.

Standardization of Pharmaceutical and Analytical Analysis of Chincha Kshara

Acharya Susrutha has narrated Kshara as one of the Upayantras, Anusastras, Agropaharaniya and one of the Upakrama of Vrana. Kshara is considered superior to all surgical and para surgical measures. Kṣharas are more effective than other methods of treatment, because they can be used externally as Pratisaraniya Kshara and internally as Paneeya Kshara. Because of varied applications standardization of the compound formulation is the need of the present era to set standards for maintaining the quality of the products. In the present study work is done on the pharmaceutical and analytical study of Chincha Kshara conducted in the department of Shalya Tantra under the post graduate programme is being presented. Here an attempt has been made to study Chincha Kshara Analytically and to develop fingerprints by organoleptic tests, physico-chemical parameters and Inductively Coupled Plasma - Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES).

Contamination of trace, non-essential/heavy metals in nutraceuticals/dietary supplements: A chemometric modelling approach and evaluation of human health risk upon dietary exposure

Across the world, nutraceuticals/dietary supplements are commonly consumed without medical supervision, and believing these products are harmless to health. However, these products may contain trace (TMs) and non-essential/heavy metals (nHMs) as contaminants at levels higher than the recommended daily allowance (RDA), which can be hazardous to human health. Consequently, it is crucial to assess the levels of these metals to ensure the safety of these products. This study aimed to analyze the concentration of TMs (Mn, Cu and Zn) and nHMs (Al, Cr, Ni, Cd and Pb) in nutraceuticals/dietary supplements. Metal analysis was conducted using inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Multivariate and bivariate analysis including principle component analysis (PCA), hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) were applied to understand inter-metal association and sources of these metals. Concentration ranges for TMs were found as, Mn (0.2–4.3 mg/kg), Cu (0.11–2.54 mg/kg), and Zn (0.1–22.66 mg/kg) while the nHMs concentration ranges were: Al (0.046–3.336 mg/kg), Cr (0.11–1.63 mg/kg), Ni (0.18–0.72 mg/kg), Cd (0.04–0.92 mg/kg), and Pb (0.18–1.08 mg/kg). The levels of tolerable dietary intake (TDI) for Cr and Ni, and the provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) limit for Cd, exceeded the values set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The estimation of the target hazard quotient (THQ <1), hazard index (HI < 1) and cumulative cancer risk (CCR <1 ✕ 10−3) indicated no significant non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks associated with consuming these products. Therefore, the primary recommendation from this study is to use the nutraceuticals/dietary supplements should be under the supervision of dietitian.

Post‐Synthetic Modification of Mixed‐Metal UiO‐66 Framework for Rapid Neutralization of Chemical Warfare Agent Simulants

AbstractMetal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) are a promising class of materials for catalysis, offering unique opportunities for designing efficient and selective catalysts. In this study, we have focused on the synthesis and catalytic activity of a novel mixed metal MOF, Ce/Zr−UiO‐66@LiOtBu, designed for the rapid hydrolysis of chemical warfare agents simulants: dimethyl 4‐nitrophenyl phosphate (DMNP) and 2‐chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). This MOF was thoroughly characterized using powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), BET surface area, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP‐OES). The catalytic performance of Ce/Zr−UiO‐66@LiOtBu was monitored in the hydrolysis of DMNP and CEES by using 31P NMR and GC‐MS respectively. Remarkably, the MOF demonstrated rapid and efficient catalytic activity, breaking the P−O bond in DMNP with 2 min and the hydrolysis of CEES was observed in less than 45 min The results suggest the potential application of Ce/Zr−UiO‐66@LiOtBu as a robust catalyst in the detoxification of chemical warfare agent simulants. Our findings highlight the novelty of Ce/Zr−UiO‐66@LiOtBu as a catalytically active MOF, showcasing the successful integration of cerium ions and lithium tert‐butoxide to enhance basicity.

Source identification and assessment of heavy metal contamination in different plant species in the alpine ecosystems of Mt. Madra

Heavy metals are among important environmental pollutants due to their environmental persistence, toxicity and ability to accumulate in living organisms. The aim of the present study was to investigate the levels of aluminium (Al), boron (B), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and molybdenum (Mo) in plants sampled from Mt. Madra, analysed their distribution characteristics and investigated their origins using Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) modelling. The multi-point sampling technique was used to collect samples of 26 plants from Madra Mountain at altitudes ranging from 177 m to 1347 m. Inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was used for the determination of metals. The metal concentrations (all in terms of mg/kg) determined by ICP-OES are the following sequences (mean ± standard deviation): Al (827.97 ± 198.95) > B (38.49 ± 2.50) > Co (0.74 ± 0.15) > Cr (1.90 ± 0.39) > Cu (7.68 ± 0.73) > Mo (0.51 ± 0.06). Based on the results obtained from the plant samples with the highest concentrations, the following metals were identified: Al (Ajuga orientalis, 4643.57 mg/kg), B (Quercus petraea, 69.25 mg/kg), Co (Ajuga orientalis, 4.23 mg/kg), Cr (Teucrium lamiifolium, 8.64 mg/kg), Cu (Ajuga orientalis, 19.75 mg/kg) and Mo (Ajuga orientalis, 1.07 mg/kg). In conclusion, the results of the source identification analysis conducted by PMF indicated that metal concentrations in the alpine zone have a primarily anthropogenic origin.

Heavy Metal Detection and Removal by Composite Carbon Quantum Dots/Ionomer Membranes.

The combination of ion exchange membranes with carbon quantum dots (CQDs) is a promising field that could lead to significant advances in water treatment. Composite membranes formed by sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) with embedded CQDs were used for the detection and removal of heavy metal ions, such as lead and cadmium, from water. SPEEK is responsible for the capture of heavy metals based on the cation exchange mechanism, while CQDs detect their contamination by exhibiting changes in fluorescence. Water-insoluble "red" carbon quantum dots (rCQDs) were synthesized from p-phenylenediamine so that their photoluminescence was shifted from that of the polymer matrix. CQDs and the composites were characterized by several techniques: FTIR, Raman, UV/VIS, photoluminescence, XPS spectroscopies, and AFM microscopy. The heavy metal ion concentration was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The concentration ranges were 10.8-0.1 mM for Pb2+ and 10.0-0.27 mM for Cd2+. SPEEK/rCQDs showed a more pronounced turn-off effect for lead. The composite achieved 100% removal efficiency for lead and cadmium when the concentration was below a half of the ion exchange capacity of SPEEK. The regeneration of membranes in 1 M NaCl was also studied. A second order law was effective to describe the kinetics of the process.

Appraisal of potentially toxic metals contamination in protein supplements for muscle growth: A chemometric approach and associated human health risks

BackgroundThe use of protein supplements by athletes has risen due to their effectiveness in meeting dietary needs. However, there is a growing concern about the presence of potentially toxic metals (PTMs. Al, Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in these supplements. Consequently, it is crucial to evaluate the levels of these PTMs to ensure the safety of the supplements. MethodsThe objective of the current study was to assess the PTMs concentrations in protein supplements and examine any possible health hazards. Twenty-five samples of protein supplements were purchased from different pharmacies to screen them for metals. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was utilized to analyze metal content. Additionally, chemometric methods such as Pearson’s correlation coefficient (PCC), principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) were employed to identify possible sources of PTMs contamination in protein supplements. ResultsConcentration ranges for PTMs were found as, Al (0.03–3.05 mg/kg), Cr (0.11–0.89 mg/kg), Mn (1.13–8.40 mg/kg), Ni (0.06–0.71 mg/kg), Cu (1.05–5.51 mg/kg), Zn (2.14–27.10 mg/kg), Cd (0.01–0.78 mg/kg), and Pb (0.06–0.57 mg/kg). The weekly intake of Cd exceeded the level of tolerable weekly intake (TWI) set by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). ConclusionAthletes, bodybuilders, fitness enthusiasts, dieters, young adults and adolescents, and health-conscious individuals should be conscious of Cd concentration as it does not compliance the TWI set by EFSA. Target hazard quotient (THQ < 1), hazard index (HI < 1), margin of exposure (MOE ≥ 1), percentile permitted daily exposure (% PDE < 100), and cumulative cancer risk (CCR < 1 × 10−3) analyses revealed that there are no appreciable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks associated with the use of these products.

Biosorption of copper, nickel, and manganese as well as the production of metal nanoparticles by Bacillus species isolated from soils contaminated with electronic wastes.

Improper electronic waste management in the world especially in developing countries such as Iran has resulted in environmental pollution. Copper, nickel, and manganese are from the most concerned soil contaminating heavy metals which found in many electronic devices that are not properly processed. The aim of this study was to investigate the biological removal of copper, nickel, and manganese by Bacillus species isolated from a landfill of electronic waste (Zainal Pass hills located in Isfahan, Iran) which is the and to produce nanoparticles from the studied metals by the isolated bacteria. The amounts of copper, nickel, and manganese in the soil was measured as 1.9 × 104 mg/kg, 0.011 × 104 mg/kg and 0.013 × 104 mg/kg, respectively based on ICP-OES analysis, which was significantly higher than normal (0.02 mg/kg, 0.05 mg/kg, and 2 mg/kg, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of metals on the bacterial isolates was determined. The biosorption of metals by the bacteria was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). The metal nanoparticles were synthetized utilizing the isolates in culture media containing the heavy metals with the concentrations to which the isolates had shown resistance. X ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the evaluation of the fabrication of the produced metal nanoparticles. Based on the findings of this study, a total of 15 bacterial isolates were obtained from the soil samples. The obtained MICs of copper, nickel, and manganese on the isolates were 40-300 mM, 4-10 mM, and 60-120 mM, respectively. The most resistant isolates to copper were FM1 and FM2 which were able to bio-remove 79.81% and 68.69% of the metal, respectively. FM4 and FM5 were respectively the most resistant isolate to nickel and manganese and were able to bio-remove 86.74% and 91.96% of the metals, respectively. FM1, FM2, FM4, and FM5 was molecularly identified as Bacillus cereus, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus paramycoides, and Bacillus wiedmannii, respectively. The results of XRD, SEM and EDS showed conversion of the copper and manganese into spherical and oval nanoparticles with the approximate sizes of 20-40 nm. Due to the fact that the novel strains in this study showed high resistance to copper, nickel, and manganese and high adsorption of the metals, they can be used in the future, as suitable strains for the bio-removal of these metals from electronic and other industrial wastes.

Investigating the Impact of temperature and storage time on antimony release from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic used for bottled drinking water

In last decade, Prosperity in contemporary Saudi Arabia and the consequent stresses on renewable freshwater resources resulted in the bottled drinking water market. Over the period, sustainable water resources planning (SWRP) has become an essential requirement for the development of places where these resources are highly constrained. To meet this market growth in Saudi Arabia is augmented by increasing demand for bottled water. This drastic increase, leads some countries to develop an alternative sources including desalinated water and treated wastewater for landscaping irrigation, industrial reuse, street cleaning, and aquifer recharge. There are claims on health concerns the possibility of chemicals migration from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into drinking water. In this paper, inductively coupled plasma -optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was utilized and applied to determine the antimony (Sb) release from PET bottles into mineral water of 8 local brands at different temperature degrees within 8 months storage time.

Assessing cobalt and manganese in foods: A study on determination and health risk using inductively coupled plasma spectrometry

This study aimed to evaluate the concentration and health risk of cobalt (Co) and manganese (Mn) in food using inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and ICP optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), respectively. Methods were validated for six food classes based on composition and calorie content. The method limit of quantification (MLOQ) ranged from 0.0766 to 0.2525 μg/kg for Co and 0.0202–0.0832 mg/kg for Mn. Out of 351 food items, Co and Mn were detected above the method limit of detection (MLOD) in 266 and 222 samples, respectively, with highest levels in nuts, seeds, grains, beans, sauces, and seasonings. Pearson correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation (p < 0.01) between Co and Mn in agricultural (r = 0.390) and processed food (r = 0.543) categories. Exposure to Co and Mn through dietary intake remained within acceptable limits (target hazard quotient (THQ) < 1), suggesting that lifetime consumption is unlikely to elevate potential health risks. In conclusion, this comprehensive study validated methods for Co and Mn analysis and assessed their concentrations and potential health risks across various food categories.
