Detection of mutagens and BaPMO inducers in river water using the Blue Cotton adsorption technique

Induction of Mixed Function Oxidase (MFO) activity and bioactivation potential were measured in experimental carp and in native fish species from two rivers with different pollution level (Sava and Mrežnica). The experimental carp were intraperitoneally exposed to various water volume equivalents of Blue Cotton extracts from both rivers. The induction of MFO measured as a Benzo(a)pyrene monooxygenase (BaPMO) activity was increased up to 9.3-fold in experimental carp and up to 11.3-fold in native fish from Sava River, whereas the values from Mrežnica River showed only a slight increase when compared with the control (highest increase of 1.8-fold in nose carp). Accordingly, bioactivation potential using modified Ames test was higher in both experiments with Sava River. Both measured parameters in experimental carp increased in a dose-dependent manner in accordance to river volume equivalents. Different induction potential of native fish species comparable between two rivers confirmed the known possibility of their usage in biomonitoring studies. These results give qualitatively a new support to the idea of using Blue Cotton extraction technique combined with induction of MFO activity and Ames test in fish as a good biomarker for assessing risk of exposure to mutagens/carcinogens such as Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), especially due to the simplicity and cost-effectiveness of these methods.

Response of white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) to pulp and paper mill effluent in the Androscoggin River, Maine, USA

Adverse effects of pulp and paper mill effluent on fish populations have been well documented in many countries over the last two decades. Some of the initial studies were at mills with conventional chlorine bleaching and no secondary effluent treatment. Following installation of secondary treatment, changes in bleaching technology to elemental chlorine-free bleaching, and other process changes, adverse effects on fish were reduced or eliminated at some mills. Because no two mills are exactly alike, it is difficult to predict adverse impacts of any given mill on fish populations. In 1994, a study of female white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) in the Androscoggin River, Maine, USA, showed induction of mixed function oxidase, reductions in gonad size and plasma estradiol, and an increase in plasma testosterone in fish downstream of discharges from three large bleached kraft pulp and paper mills, and host community municipal sewage treatment plants (STP). After all three mills switched to elemental chlorine-free bleaching in the late 1990s, studies from 2001 to 2003 found that the pattern of reproductive impacts on white sucker populations measured in 1994 was not repeated. In addition, population estimates of white sucker from 2002 to 2003 using mark-recapture techniques found that densities and biomass were well within the range of those of a reference population, and of those reported in the literature for unimpacted populations. Detailed studies immediately above and below each mill/sewage treatment plant showed no evidence of reproductive effects. However, a clear pattern of eutrophication was noted, which increased cumulatively downstream below each mill/STP.

Phase I Enzyme Induction in Girardinichthys viviparus, an Endangered Goodeid Fish, Exposed to Water from Native Localities Enriched with Polychlorinated Biphenyls

The present study examines the induction of mixed-function oxidase (MFO) enzymes, including CYP content CYP1A (EROD) activity and alcohol dehydrogenase activity (ADH), in an endemic Mexican fish species, the black-fin goodeid Girardinichthys viviparus, exposed to the water of two localities, Lake Texcoco (LTX) and Lake Zumpango, and to the same matrices enriched in polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to simulate the potential toxic effects of sublethal increases in these xenobiotics. Fishes of both sexes born in the laboratory were exposed for 1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 days. Water from the two types of localities of the black-fin goodeid contains MFO inducers. Of the two, the most contaminated is LTX water, which also contains PCBs. EROD activity was higher in all treatments with female compared with male fish. This suggests greater metabolic compromise in female fish as a response to damage caused by these xenobiotics. In this species, CYP induction displayed two patterns that were not always concurrent with higher CYP1A activity. In the enriched matrix system, biotransformation processes were notably altered. Increased ADH may indicate that this enzyme is involved in the biotransformation of PCBs and their metabolites, particularly in male fish, and provides at least a part of reductive power required by the MFO enzymes; however, specific studies are needed to clarify this point.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls–Modulated Tumorigenesis in Sprague–Dawley Rats: Correlation with Mixed Function Oxidase Activities and Superoxide (O2•−) Formation Potentials and Implied Mode of Action

Parallel, chronic (24 months) multidose bioassays of the PCB (polychlorinated biphenyls) Aroclors 1016, 1242, 1254, and 1260 in male and female Sprague-Dawley rats showed sex/Aroclor-dependent increases in hepatic tumors and decreases in extrahepatic tumors. To elucidate the PCB mode of action (MOA) involved, levels of a number of hypothesized mediators were measured in liver specimens collected at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months and screened for correlation with late life hepatotumorigenesis (HT; mostly adenomas). Consistently correlated with HT were (1) tissue accumulations of SigmaPCBs (correlated in both sexes) and of dioxin equivalents (toxic equivalency [TEQ]; correlated in females only); (2) net activities of six groups of mixed function oxidases (MFOs), some PCB-induced, some PCB-repressed, as determined by differential metabolism of PCB congeners; (3) activities of deproteinated, reoxidized hepatic cytosols as catalysts for superoxide (O(2)(*-)) production, such activity having the chemical characteristics of redox-cycling quinones (RCQs), e.g., those derived from the glutathionylated estrogen catechols that were identified in the female rat livers; and (4) increased expression of the indicator of cell proliferation, proliferating cell nuclear antigen. The new findings, along with other recently reported relationships, were indicative of a MOA consisting of (1) SigmaPCB/TEQ accumulation in rat tissues; (2) SigmaPCB/TEQ repression of constitutive MFOs; (3) SigmaPCB/TEQ induction of other MFOs; (4) MFO-mediated formation of RCQs; (5) RCQ-mediated formation of O(2)(*-); (6) O(2)(*-) dismutation to H(2)O(2); and (7) H(2)O(2)-mediated mitotic signaling, resulting in the proliferation of spontaneously or otherwise initiated cells to form hepatic tumors, as in tumor promotion.

Effect of sodium sulfadimethylpyrimidine on multiple forms of cytochrome P450 in chicken

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of sodium sulfadimethylpyrimidine (SDMP) on different forms of CYP 450 enzymes induced by phenobarbital (CYP 2B1, 2B2 and 3A), isoniazid (CYP 2E1), benzo(a)pyrene (CYP 1A1), clotrimazole (CYP 3A), and clofibrate (CYP 4A). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chickens (Hubbard, male) weighing 250-300 g were divided into 17 groups of six each. Five experimental sets were prepared containing three subgroups each to test five different inducers. Microsomes were isolated by calcium precipitation. The levels of electron transport components, CYP 450, cytochrome b5, and cytochrome c-reductase were determined using extinction coefficients. Activities of drug-metabolizing enzymes were assayed. RESULTS: All inducers (phenobarbital, isoniazid, benzo(a)pyrene, clotrimazole, and clofibrate) showed significant induction of mixed function oxidase in chicken. The SDMP treatment of inducer-pretreated chicken caused a significant decrease in electron transport components and activities of drug-metabolizing enzymes when compared with treatment of inducer alone. Phenobarbital, isoniazid, and benzo(a)pyrene treatments of SDMP-pretreated chicken showed no significant change in induction pattern, however, significant alterations were observed in the induction pattern of clotrimazole and clofibrate. CONCLUSION : Our studies suggest that CYP 2B1, 2B2, 3A; CYP 2E1; CYP 1A1; CYP 3A and CYP 4A are susceptible species of CYP 450 to SDMP and its metabolites. The SDMP also affected in the induction pattern of some of the inducers with respect to CYP 450 isoforms.

Toxicokinetics of Malathion in Larval Stages of the Toad Bufo arenarum (Hensel): Effect of Exogenous Spermidine

Abstract The aim of this work was to study the absorption, biotransformation, and excretion of malathion ( 14 C-methoxy) and its metabolites in larval stages of the toad Bufo arenarum (Hensel). Also, changes in malathion metabolization by the action of the exogenous polyamine spermidine were studied. Malathion clearance from the media was uniexponential, and spermidine reduced the uptake in the larvae, causing an increase in the apparent half-life of the toxicant. Concomitant with this effect, spermidine increased the level of induction of mixed-function oxidases due to malathion and caused a progressively higher malaoxon/malathion ratio. As a consequence of the higher conversion to the active metabolite malaoxon, spermidine also provoked a significant enhancement in the inhibitory effect of Malathion on acetylcholinesterase activity. [ methoxy 14 C]malathion metabolites, such as carboxylesterase and glutathione S -transferase products, were detected in the toad larvae and in the media. The excreted products of carboxylesterase activity were about 70% of the total radioactivity, and the glutathione S -transferase products (methyl glutathione) were 20–30% of the total radioactivity. No significant variations in the levels of excreted products due to the action of exogenous spermidine were detected. Malathion inhibited carboxylesterase activity, independent of the presence of spermidine in the media. In turn, glutathione S -transferase activity was induced by spermidine, but was not affected by the exposure to low concentrations of malathion for 48 h. We conclude that the presence of spermidine in the medium modifies malathion toxicokinetics, increasing its toxicity in B. arenarum larvae.

Cytochrome P4501A and associated mixed-function oxidase induction in fish as a biomarker for toxic carcinogenic pollutants in the aquatic environment

Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) present in polluted environment induce cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) isozyme in fish, which in turn results in a marked increased production of carcinogenic metabolites from PAHs. The induction of hepatic CYP1A in fish by certain classes of chemicals has been suggested as an early warning system, a "most sensitive biological response" for assessing environmental contamination conditions. This has implications for human fish consumption, as well as for the health status of aquatic organisms. Correlation between elevated CYP1A and altered steroid metabolism and decreased reproductive success has been pointed out. The induction of CYP1A and associated enzyme activities has now been confirmed in a number of field studies. Cases where these biomarkers have been studied in field conditions will be presented. Special emphasis will be given to field studies in which the induction of CYP1A activity, 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activities and immunochemical detection of CYP1A in leaping mullet and common sole are used as a biomarker for PAH- and/or PCB-type pollutants along the Izmir Bay on the Aegean Sea.

Subacute Cocaine Treatment Changes Expression of Mouse Liver Cytochrome P450 Isoforms

Acute administration of single high doses of cocaine (50 or 60 mg/kg) produces liver injury in mice that have been pretreated with inducers of mixed function oxidases. Multiple low doses of cocaine (10–30 mg/kg) will produce hepatotoxicity without prior induction. To establish whether cocaine can induce its own activation, mice were given three daily injections of cocaine. Total cytochrome P450 content of the liver did not change. After 3 days the amount of cytochrome P450 2B10, as measured by pentoxy resorufin-O-dealkylase activity and immunoblotting, increased 3-fold. Cytochrome P450 2A5-catalyzed coumarin 7-hydroxylase activity and immunoreactive protein increased by about 50%. Enzyme activities and Western blotting of isoforms 1A, 2E, and 3A showed no change during this time. Chronic cocaine increased N-hydroxylation of norcocaine. Immunoinhibition studies showed that cytochrome P450 2A5 was the major isoform responsible for norcocaine N-hydroxylation. These results demonstrate that chronic cocaine can induce its own metabolism. Similar increases were also observed in mice not susceptible to liver injury from chronic cocaine.

Mixed function oxidase induction in Carcinus aestuarii. : Field and experimental studies for the evaluation of toxicological risk due to Mediterranean contaminants

The aim of this study was to test and validate the use of mixed function oxidase (MFO) induction, in the crab Carcinus aestuarii, under experimental and field studies, for the evaluation of toxicological risk due to the main contaminants in the Mediterranean. Two different experiments were performed in the laboratory in order to identify the most suitable tissues for MFO studies in this species and the most suitable and sensitive MFO responses for evaluating chemical stress due to lipophilic contaminants. In order to validate this methodology in the field, two studies were carried out in two polluted Mediterranean lagoons: a transplant experiment in Orbetello Lagoon and an in situ experiment in Venice Lagoon. The following MFO responses were investigated in hepatopancres and gills of the crabs: ethoxyresorufin- O-deethylase (EROD) and benzo( a)pyrene hydroxylase (BPH) activities and reductase enzyme activities. The main results can be summarised as follows: midgut-gland and gills were confirmed to be useful for MFO tests; BPH activity in hepatopancreas was the most suitable and sensitive MFO response for evaluating chemical stress due to Mediterranean contaminants in laboratory and field studies; in the Orbetello Lagoon experiment, a statistically significant difference was found between sites subject to different human impact.

An overview of animal toxicology studies with bicalutamide (ICI 176,334).

The toxicological profile of bicalutamide in animals following acute and chronic dosing is closely associated with the drug's non-steroidal anti-androgenic pharmacological activity. Bicalutamide produces typical effects of an anti-androgen, including atrophy of the prostate, testis and seminal vesicles and Leydig cell hyperplasia resulting from inhibition of pituitary feedback by testosterone. Subsequent benign Leydig cell tumors were seen in rats, but Leydig cell hyperplasia has not been observed in patients. Bicalutamide causes liver enlargement and is a mixed function oxidase inducer in rodents and dogs, but not man. These effects lead to thyroid hypertrophy and adenoma in the rat and hepatocellular carcinoma in the male mouse. In vitro and in vivo genotoxicity studies have all given negative results. Bicalutamide also caused a reversible shortening of the electrocardiographic P-R interval in the dog without any associated pathology. This change was not detected in ECG monitoring during clinical trials. In conclusion, bicalutamide produced a range of pharmacological effects, as well as liver enlargement with enzyme induction and dog ECG changes in preclinical toxicity studies in rodents and dogs. Only the pharmacological changes were found to be relevant to human usage.

Chlorinated hydrocarbons in the tissues of South Polar Skuas (Catharacta maccormicki) and Adélie Penguins (Pygoscelis adeliea) from Ross Sea, Antarctica

High rates of egg infertility and embryo death in a colony of South Polar Skuas breeding in the Antarctic were similar to those in polluted North Atlantic populations of the Great Skua. Such loss could not be linked to factors such as organochlorine pollutants, as levels of DDE and PCBs in the contents of skua eggs from the population were only a small fraction of those in polluted skua populations from the Northern Hemisphere. Average eggshell thickness for skuas nesting on Ross Island has shown no significant change since the introduction of DDT. Concentrations of DDE and PCBs in South Polar Skuas were 13 and 22 times higher, respectively, than those in the eggs of sympatric Adélie Penguins, and this probably reflects the greater exposure of skuas to pollution when they migrate north of the Antarctic Convergence in winter. Residues in liver tissue showed a similar trend, and a higher rate of mixed function oxidase induction in skua liver compared to that of penguins is consistent with the trends seen in pollutant levels. The same PCB congener predominated in both skua and penguin samples. Comparisons with historical residue data suggest that global levels of DDT residues are declining.

A review of the hepatic tumors related to mixed-function oxidase induction in the mouse.

Mixed-function oxidase (MFO) induction in the mouse liver results in a rapid and sustained centrilobular hypertrophy associated with a hyperplastic response. In many studies, the long-term sequela of prolonged exposure is an increased incidence of lesions considered to be adenomas. Studies have shown in aged control mice that the burden of adenomas usually consists of lesions with basophilic cytoplasic staining and a uniform population of hepatocyte nuclei. With long-term feeding of MFO inducers, there is an additional burden of lesions diagnosed as adenomas having a different histological appearance with increased eosinophilic cytoplasm and pleomorphic nuclei. The incidence of hepatocarcinomas usually is not modified by the increased incidence of eosinophilic adenomas. Studies into the behavior of the eosinophilic lesions show that the hepatocytes approximate in their behavior to normal and not neoplastic cells. It is suggested that these lesions should not be considered a carcinogenic response to the chemical.

Temporal variation in hepatic mixed-function oxidase (MFO) induction in rainbow trout exposed to industrial effluent

In this study, refinery storm water run-off is examined for its ability to induce mixed-function oxidase (MFO) activity in rainbow trout. Induction was shown at dilutions of 10% effluent, representing total PAH concentrations in the <1 ppb range. Data collected over a 23-day period indicated two phases of increased MFO activity. Postulations regarding temporal MFO induction are made.

Hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity, plasma steroid hormone concentrations, and liver bioassay-derived 2,3,7,8-TCDD toxic equivalent concentrations in wild white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) caged in bleached kraft pulp mill effluent

Prespawning male white sucker (Catostomus commersoni), captured near Jackfish Bay, Lake Superior (exposed to bleached kraft pulp mill effluent (BKME)), and Mountain Bay (reference) were caged in the BKME receiving area for 2, 4, and 8 d. Initially, the hepatic 7-ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity was similar in fish from both BKME and reference sites and, upon BKME exposure, increased 20-fold at both sites after 2 d. The H4IIE cell culture bioassay was used to measure 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin toxic equivalent concentration (TEC) in sucker liver extracts. H4IIE bioassay-derived TECs from Jackfish Bay sucker showed no significant treatment differences; combined TECs for all treatments averaged 51.1 pg∙g−1. Mountain Bay sucker liver TECs were initially significantly less (4.64 pg∙g−1) than the Jackfish Bay TECs but did show a significant, fivefold increase when fish were exposed to effluent. Mountain Bay and Jackfish Bay 8-d BKME-exposed fish showed no uptake of TECs calculated from directly measured polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) during this exposure. The results suggest that PCDDs and PCDFs are not responsible for the mixed function oxidase induction observed. Handling stress caused rapid reduction of the plasma steroids testosterone and 11-ketotestosterone, confounding any possible BKME effect.

Polybrominated biphenyl induction of cytochrome P450 mixed function oxidase activity in primary rat and human hepatocytes

Polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) is an industrial chemical and environmental contaminant with known incidence of significant human exposure. PBB has been studied in laboratory animals and found to have significant toxicological effects as well as being a potent inducer of hepatic cytochrome P450 mixed function oxidase (MFO) activity. As part of our program to compare the response of laboratory animals and humans to industrial and environmental toxicants, we studied the effect of a major component of commercial PBB mixtures, 2,2′,4,4′,5,5′-hexabromobiphenyl (HBB), on MFO induction in primary cultures of human and rat hepatocytes. MFO induction was evaluated by measuring the deethylation of 7-ethoxycoumarin by intact hepatocytes. Rat hepatocytes were found to be highly susceptible to HBB induction of 7-ethoxycoumarin O-deethylase (ECOD) activity, with significant induction observed at the lowest concentration tested of 10 −8 M. Human hepatocytes were found to have a higher threshold for HBB induction of ECOD activity than rat hepatocytes. The lowest concentration of HBB required for ECOD induction observed for human hepatocytes was 10- to 1000-fold higher (10 −7, 10 −6, 10 −5 and 10 −5 M for the four human samples) than that found in rat hepatocytes. Future mechanistic investigation of this observed difference in sensitivity towards PBB between rat and human hepatocytes may aid the extrapolation of human health risk from toxicological data obtained from laboratory animals.

A laboratory exposure procedure for screening pulp and paper mill effluents for the potential of causing increased mixed function oxidase activity in fish

To better understand the relationships between pulp manufacturing processes and mixed function oxidase (MFO) enzyme induction in fish, a practical and standardized exposure procedure is required. This study was undertaken to develop a laboratory-based exposure procedure to quantify the relative MFO induction potencies of different types of pulp and paper mill effluents. One major consideration in developing the procedure was to ensure that the protocol was practical so that tests could be performed in a short time, with small volumes of effluents and using simple experimental conditions. A series of concentration-response and time-course experiments were conducted to find the minimum time and effluent concentration which could distinguish the ability of different effluents to cause significant MFO induction in rainbow trout in the laboratory. Experiments were also conducted to determine the effects of biotic and abiotic factors such as loading density, fish size and feeding regime. This study showed that the exposure of rainbow trout in the laboratory to 10% concentration of secondary-treated effluent for 96 h caused significant increases in hepatic MFO activity. The magnitude of MFO induction was comparable to other field and laboratory observations. While fish size, loading density and feeding regime were found to affect the test results, consistent responses within a laboratory using this protocol are possible, provided that these factors are standardized. Therefore, the short-term exposure approach described in this paper could be a relevant tool for assessing the ability of different types of pulp and paper mill effluents to cause MFO induction in fish.

The influence of rifampin treatment on caffeine clearance in healthy man

Background/Aims: Since cytochrome P450IA2 is involved in the metabolism of procarcinogens and carcinogens, there is debate about whether induction of this enzyme system by pharmaceuticals leads to a higher risk of malignancy. We investigated rifampin as a potent inducer of the hepatic mixed function oxygenase system and its effect on caffeine metabolism which can be taken as an in vivo marker of cytochrome P450IA2 activity. Methods: Caffeine clearance was measured in ten healthy volunteers before and after a 7-day treatment with 600 mg rifampin. Urinary 6β-hydroxycortisol output was used as endogenous marker of microsomal enzyme function. Results: 6β-hydroxycortisol increased from 7.6 to 26.0 μg/24 h per kg after treatment with rifampin, consistent with the induction of mixed function oxidases in the liver. There were significant changes in caffeine plasma half-life (6.2 vs. 3.5 h; p<0.004) and caffeine plasma clearance (1.3 vs. 2.2 ml/kg per min; p<0.004) with rifampin. Conclusions: The hypothesis that induction of cytochrome P450IA2 entails accelerated activation of procarcinogens would predict rifampin to be associated with a higher risk of malignancy. As with other inducers of cytochrome P450IA2, such as phenytoin or omeprazole, no such linkage is known. Therefore the role of pharmaceutical induction of cytochrome P450IA2 in tumor promotion remains unclear.

Interannual Mixed Function Oxidase (MFO) Activity in Winter Flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) from a Coal Tar Contaminated Estuary

7-Ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD), benzo[a]pyrene hydroxylase (BaPH), and cytochromes P-450 (cyt-P450) and b5(cyt-b5) varied annually in winter flounder (Pleuronectes americanus) collected in August of 1987, 1988, and 1989 from a coal tar contaminated estuary (Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada). For August 1989, with fish available from all estuary areas, these indices correlated strongly with a spatial (along estuary) gradient in PAH in bottom sediments (7.19 ± 6.59–191 ± 184 μg g dry weight−1). Mean EROD activities in flounder near the coal tar source were up to seven times those in other estuary areas and paralleled sediment PAH loadings; however, standard deviations were high. Correlations for all MFO indices and sediment PAH were obtained in female flounder (P &lt; 0.01: EROD, cyt-b5, cyt-P450; P &lt; 0.02: BaPH). For male flounder the trend was similar, but only cyt-P450 correlated with sediment PAH (P &lt; 0.017). BaPH activity was highest near the coal tar source but was more variable and less sensitive to pollutant levels than EROD activity. Somatic indices in fish from Sydney estuary and St. George's Bay were similar. Winter flounder are vulnerable to PAH-induced MFO activities from coal tar contaminated sediments, but MFO induction does not occur equally in all fish; single-season or single-year data must be interpreted with caution.

Hepatic metallothionein level and mixed function oxidase activity in fingerling rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) after acute exposure to pulp and paper mill effluents

Hepatic metallothionein (MT) levels and mixed function oxidase (MFO) activity (7-ethoxyresorufin-o-deethylase or EROD) were measured in fingerling rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) exposed to sublethal concentrations of 12 pulp and paper effluents, after completion of 96 h static acute lethality assays. Barring one primary-treated effluent where MFO levels were significantly depressed and two secondary-treated effluents where no significant MFO induction were observed, all other effluents triggered significant induction of MT and EROD, regardless of mill process/treatment or of effluent lethality and chemical characteristics. MT and EROD inductions were significant, however, at higher concentrations for secondary-treated effluents than for primary-treated ones. Lethal (96 h LC50s) to sublethal (MT and EROD lowest observable effect concentrations) ratios were variable and indicated that significant biochemical effects were present at effluent concentrations that were roughly 4–33 (MT) and 3–59 (EROD) times lower than the LC30. Enzyme induction ranged from 1.3 to 2.5-fold for MT and from 1.3 to 9.4-fold for EROD compared to controls. Limited chemical data available suggest that there were indeed classes of compounds present capable of inducing MT or EROD. Observed patterns of MT/MFO responses also suggest that contaminant interactions may have interfered with induction for some of the effluents studied. Refinements of this combined (sub)lethal bioassay procedure are envisaged to determine whether it can provide an efficient means of detecting hazardous chemicals in industrial wastewaters.
