Exploring design and technological aspects of digital fashion: a systematic review of recent innovations

ABSTRACT This study examines the state of research in the field of digital fashion, specifically focusing on design and production. The authors propose a definition for digital fashion as the ‘virtual creation, production, and depiction of an individual's identity, in particular in the field of clothing and footwear, through computer-aided design’. Using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 386 publications from the Web of Science database have been selected for the systematic review. A keyword map was created based on bibliographic data, and a cluster analysis of the publications revealed five main clusters. The analysis of articles shows that the most frequently mentioned topics are design, fashion, social media, and technology. Sustainability, digital fashion, and performance are also frequently discussed.

Access to test selection in children’s athletics – Prediction of reaching maximum speed level and result in sprint based on dynamickinematic parameters, speed-strength abilities and morphological characteristics

Running speed in the form of sprinting is one of the most important abilities that can significantly define performance success in many sports. From the perspective of genetically inherited motor functions, running speed can be classified as a primary phylogenetic human movement, manifested in the form of a “threesegment model” consisting of speed, power, and coordination. By comprehensively analyzing the general and partial predictive contributions of dynamic-kinematic parameters of running, speed-power abilities, and morphological characteristics, on a sample of 80 boys aged 10-12 years, it can be concluded that regardless of the choice of criteria, achieved maximal speeds (KVMAX) or results in children’s athletic sprint over 50 meters (KT50m), the same or related predictor variables contributed to the explanation. The variable running time for 20m from a flying start (KTLS20m) has the greatest predictive contribution (β=0.83, p<0.001) to explaining both criteria, which may indicate the importance of conducting this test in the identification and selection for athletic sprint. Additionally, the selection of tests to assess speed-power abilities is extremely important for the identification and selection for athletic sprint. It can be concluded that tests of horizontal and vertical jumps are significant for identification, as well as tests for assessing neuro-muscular excitation. Tests for assessing continuous horizontal jump are also important, although there is an impression that, in boys aged 10-12 years, coordinatively simpler tests should be used. In the analysis of morphological characteristics, variables that significantly contributed to the explanation of criteria at a partial level were body height, back skinfold, and ankle diameter, indicating that in the identification of talented individuals, it should be considered that elite sprinters are characterized by light bones, optimal muscle mass, and low levels of subcutaneous fat tissue.

Evaluating the potential importance of individual identity, maternal traits, and environment as predictors of egg characteristics in walleye Sander vitreus

Individual and environmental factors may influence gamete characteristics and contributions to recruitment in fishes. We tested for the influence of maternal, abiotic, and biotic factors on egg diameter and quality (i.e., oil droplet diameter) for walleye Sander vitreus in Escanaba Lake, Wisconsin, during 2018–2023 (omitting 2020). Analyses were conducted on fish captured once and for the same individuals captured multiple times during our study period. In the single-capture analysis, increasing maternal length was weakly related to larger egg diameter and oil droplet size. Increased yellow perch abundance was somewhat related to increased intra-clutch variation, whereas a later ice-off date was related to reduced intra-clutch variation. Fish that spawned later had more variable egg and oil droplet diameters. Among fish that were sampled over multiple years, individual identity was a strong predictor of egg and oil diameter. Our results suggest that regulations that preserve among individual variation in egg traits could increase the chances that environmental conditions will be favorable for spawning and recruitment for at least some fish.

Writing the Self: Identity Formation in Dalit Women’s Life Writings

The formation of self in Dalit women’s writings is a historical process which is based on their lived experiences, centuries of suffering and resistance against the atrocities meted out on them because of untouchability and being women. They depict their struggle for survival and protest through the experiences from their daily lives of poverty, hunger, humiliation and exploitation. Uniquely, Dalit women’s ‘Self’ stands for individual identity as well as the collective identity of the community they belong to. At the intersection of class, caste and gender they are considered as ‘Dalit among Dalits’. In the pages of history, they remained neglected and suffered the ‘triple’ subjugation of caste, class and gender. Presently, they have embarked their self-identity on the literary canon through their life writings as resistance against their subordination – both caste and patriarchy. Their writings are mostly in form of autobiographies, biographies, memoirs and autobiographical fiction and most of them have been written in regional languages which lead to the formation of Dalit ‘Self’. Recently, a few Dalit women’s writings have been translated into English and have got access to the wider range of readers. These translated works, though few in number, have paved ways for Dalit women’s formation of self and have succeeded in establishing a standpoint for themselves – a Dalit Feminist Standpoint. Taking up the analysis of three groundbreaking Dalit women’s autobiographies namely The Prisons We Broke by Baby Kamble, The Weave of My Life by Urmila Pawar and Karukku by Bama, the focus of the paper centers around Dalit women’s suffering and how they successfully combat the hegemony of their oppressors and formed a separate branch of identity for themselves on the literary canon as Dalit feminism.

Self-efficacy mediation of spiritual well-being and work-family balance

ABSTRACT Work and family are two of the most important aspects of individual identity, but conflict can occur when these domains fall out of balance. Through the conceptual lens of job demands-resource theory, this study examines how spiritual well-being can help employees balance competing roles by strengthening self-efficacy in managing work-family conflict. A quantitative, correlational research design was used to analyze responses from 475 working adults in a mediated multiple regression model. The results indicated that the positive relationship between spiritual well-being and satisfaction with work-family balance is fully mediated by self-efficacy in managing work-family conflict. These findings empirically support the influential roles spiritual well-being and self-efficacy have in balancing conflicting demands in the work-family interface. For organizations and managers, this research underscores the importance of supporting spiritual well-being in a diverse workforce to reduce stress and sustain employee engagement.

Mental Manifestations and Biomarkers of Alcohol Consumption.

The purpose of this study is to examine healthcare usage, morbidities, and alcohol consumption monitoring in patients before a diagnosis of mental manifestations to assist in the early identification of individuals at risk. Biological markers of alcoholism are separated into two groups: those biological variables that highlight with great confidence and validate the presence of a predisposition to alcoholism, also called trait markers, or those that highlight alcohol consumption, called markers of alcoholism ("status markers"). Biomarkers are the true "gold standard" for the diagnosis of alcoholism. They are valuable for tracking evolution and progress during biological and psychological therapy and for highlighting relapse. This review compiles the existing data from research on healthcare utilization, comorbidities, and alcohol consumption monitoring in patients before a diagnosis of mental manifestations to aid in the early identification of individuals at risk. This documentary study took place over three to four months by searching for terms on the Science Direct platform, PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar such as alcoholism, alcohol use disorders, alcohol abuse, and biomarkers. Studies reporting on the development, characteristics, and utilization of blood biomarkers for alcohol consumption were included in the search. The initial search included a number of 11.019 articles that contained the keywords biomarkers and alcohol. Finally, a total of 50 research articles were considered. I am involved in clinical studies, meta-analyses, reviews, and case studies regarding alcohol consumption detection, as well as potential alcohol markers.

Polygenic risk score of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease amplifies the health impact on severe liver disease and metabolism-related outcomes

BackgroundAlthough the inherited risk factors associated with fatty liver disease are well understood, little is known about the genetic background of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its related health impacts. Compared to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), MASLD presents significantly distinct diagnostic criteria, and epidemiological and clinical features, but the related genetic variants are yet to be investigated. Therefore, we conducted this study to assess the genetic background of MASLD and interactions between MASLD-related genetic variants and metabolism-related outcomes.MethodsParticipants from the UK Biobank were grouped into discovery and replication cohorts for an MASLD genome-wide association study (GWAS), and base and target cohorts for polygenic risk score (PRS) analysis. Autosomal genetic variants associated with NAFLD were compared with the MASLD GWAS results. Kaplan–Meier and Cox regression analyses were used to assess associations between MASLD and metabolism-related outcomes.ResultsSixteen single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified at genome-wide significance levels for MASLD and duplicated in the replication cohort. Differences were found after comparing these SNPs with the results of NAFLD-related genetic variants. MASLD cases with high PRS had a multivariate-adjusted hazard ratio of 3.15 (95% confidence interval, 2.54–3.90) for severe liver disease (SLD), and 2.81 (2.60–3.03) for type 2 diabetes mellitus. The high PRS amplified the impact of MASLD on SLD and extrahepatic outcomes.ConclusionsHigh PRS of MASLD GWAS amplified the impact of MASLD on SLD and metabolism-related outcomes, thereby refining the process of identification of individuals at high risk of MASLD. Supplementation of this process with relevant genetic backgrounds may lead to more effective MASLD prevention and management.

Latent profiles of narrative competence and professional identity among nursing students: A cross-sectional analytic study based on the Ring theory of personhood

AimTo identify latent profiles of narrative competence in nursing students and examine the association between the potential competence profiles and professional identity from a person-centred perspective. BackgroundAccording to the Ring theory of personhood, nursing students can develop their professional identities from individual, relational and social aspects through interaction with patients, as well as listening to, understanding and responding to patients' disease narratives. However, few studies have examined the relationship between narrative competence and professional identity through the quantitative method. DesignA cross-sectional analytic study. MethodsA total of 472 nursing students responded to the survey between March and May 2023. The Professional Identity Questionnaire for Nurse Students and the Narrative Competence Scale were given to participants. Latent profile analysis was conducted to identify narrative competence profiles. The Bolck-Croon-Hagenaars method was used to analyse whether these latent profiles for narrative competence affected nursing students’ general, individual, interpersonal and social professional identities. ResultsLatent profiles were identified as “low narrative competence” (12.1 %), “relatively low narrative competence” (39.9 %), “moderate narrative competence” (40.1 %) and “high narrative competence” (7.9 %). The profiles only show level differences rather than combinations of competence areas. These profiles had varying effects on the nursing students’ general professional identities, as well as their individual, relational and social professional identities. ConclusionThis study highlights the significance of providing tailored guidance and support to nursing students, taking into account their unique narrative competency profile, to promote the formation of professional identity from individual, relational and social aspects. Nursing educators should effectively distinguish nursing students with inadequate narrative competence and value patients’ disease narratives to promote narrative competence and professional identity.

Particle Size-Tunable Polydopamine Nanoparticles for Optical and Electrochemical Imaging of Latent Fingerprints on Various Surfaces.

Powder dusting method is the most widely used approach due to its low cost, simplicity, minimal instrument dependence, and extensive applicability for developing latent fingerprints (LFPs). Herein, a novel optical and electrochemical dual-mode method for high-resolution LFP enhancement has been explored based on size-tunable polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticles (NPs) and scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). Dark PDAs rich in functional groups and negative charges can combine with the residues of LFPs on various surfaces with high sensitivity and selectivity to realize high-resolution visual fingerprint physical patterns on various porous and nonporous substrates with light color. However, optical visualization is not feasible for LFPs on dark or multicolored surfaces. Fortunately, based on the differences in electrochemical reactivity between ridges and furrows caused by the conductivity and reducibility of PDA powders, SECM can serve as a powerful supplement to optical methods to effectively overcome background color interference and distinctly display fingerprint patterns. Intriguingly, it is noteworthy that the binding amount and particle size of PDA powder significantly affected the optical and electrochemical visualization of LFPs: more powder binding amounts provided darker ridges in optical, and more surface reaction sites (larger powder binding mass at the same particle size or smaller particle size at the same mass) provided higher currents of ridges in electrochemical imaging. It demonstrates that the PDA powder as a dual-mode developer for LFPs offers a promising method for individual identification in forensics.

Population dynamics and genetic isolation in the Central Himalayan region: insights from Sikkim population, India.

India's rich diversity encompasses individuals from varied geographical, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. In the field of population genetics, comprehending the genetic diversity across distinct populations plays a crucial role. This study presents significant findings from genetic data obtained from the Sikkimese population of India. Autosomal markers were crucial for evaluating forensic parameters, with a combined paternity index of 1 × 109. Notably, Penta E emerged as a distinguishing marker for individual identification in the Sikkim population. Fst genetic distance values revealed insights into genetic isolation among different groups, enhancing our understanding of population dynamics in the central Himalayan region. The NJ-based phylogenetic tree highlighted close genetic relationships, of the Sikkim population with the Nepalese population surrounding neighbouring Himalayan populations providing glimpses into common ancestry. In summary, this study contributes valuable data to population genetics and underscores the importance of genetic variation in comprehending population dynamics and forensic applications.

The early school dropout rate in Spain stands at 13.6 %, a percentage higher than the European average. This is a phenomenon influenced by multifactorial aspects, including factors related to the educational system as well as individual characteristics. The objective of this research is to determine the influence of factors related to individual identity on early school dropout, such as gender, age, country of origin, mother tongue, and place of residence. The study is conducted through the administration of a specifically developed questionnaire to a sample of 1157 students from La Rioja in the final years of compulsory secondary education. Data analysis is performed through descriptive analysis, examining percentage differences between groups and represented with line graphs. The results show differences based on age, gender, and place of residence. Additionally, differences are observed between national and foreign students, especially those with a non-Spanish mother tongue. The main findings indicate that certain identity traits substantially influence whether students continue their educational process. Therefore, educational institutions should be aware of these potentially risky identity aspects in order to develop proactive actions for at-risk students, thereby avoiding future early school dropout.

We are not a virus: repercussions of anti-Asian online hate during the COVID-19 pandemic on identity and coping strategies of Asian-heritage individuals

ABSTRACT Current scholarship has identified online hate speech as one of the main threats in digital spaces, leading to an ever-heightened marginalization of ethnic minorities. The COVID-19 pandemic has given racist expressions of hate a new momentum, directed particularly at Asian-heritage individuals who were scapegoated as the originators of the virus. This study explores the repercussions of this for Asian-heritage individuals living in Europe, specifically their (1) identity and (2) coping strategies. Using semi-structured interviews with N = 14 Asian-heritage individuals, the study shows how this group was hatefully othered online, with severe consequences for its members’ sense of hybrid belonging and ethnic identity. Initial defense attempts were muted, and individuals surrendered to passive coping strategies, withdrawing from mainstream discourse. The study shows how identity and coping were inextricably intertwined. Taking this case as an example for minority victimization during crises, we discuss potential empowerment perspectives for ethnic minority individuals.

Bayesian Networks for Prescreening in Depression: Algorithm Development and Validation.

Identifying individuals with depressive symptomatology (DS) promptly and effectively is of paramount importance for providing timely treatment. Machine learning models have shown promise in this area; however, studies often fall short in demonstrating the practical benefits of using these models and fail to provide tangible real-world applications. This study aims to establish a novel methodology for identifying individuals likely to exhibit DS, identify the most influential features in a more explainable way via probabilistic measures, and propose tools that can be used in real-world applications. The study used 3 data sets: PROACTIVE, the Brazilian National Health Survey (PesquisaNacionalde Saúde [PNS]) 2013, and PNS 2019, comprising sociodemographic and health-related features. A Bayesian network was used for feature selection. Selected features were then used to train machine learning models to predict DS, operationalized as a score of ≥10 on the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire. The study also analyzed the impact of varying sensitivity rates on the reduction of screening interviews compared to a random approach. The methodology allows the users to make an informed trade-off among sensitivity, specificity, and a reduction in the number of interviews. At the thresholds of 0.444, 0.412, and 0.472, determined by maximizing the Youden index, the models achieved sensitivities of 0.717, 0.741, and 0.718, and specificities of 0.644, 0.737, and 0.766 for PROACTIVE, PNS 2013, and PNS 2019, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.736, 0.801, and 0.809 for these 3 data sets, respectively. For the PROACTIVE data set, the most influential features identified were postural balance, shortness of breath, and how old people feel they are. In the PNS 2013 data set, the features were the ability to do usual activities, chest pain, sleep problems, and chronic back problems. The PNS 2019 data set shared 3 of the most influential features with the PNS 2013 data set. However, the difference was the replacement of chronic back problems with verbal abuse. It is important to note that the features contained in the PNS data sets differ from those found in the PROACTIVE data set. An empirical analysis demonstrated that using the proposed model led to a potential reduction in screening interviews of up to 52% while maintaining a sensitivity of 0.80. This study developed a novel methodology for identifying individuals with DS, demonstrating the utility of using Bayesian networks to identify the most significant features. Moreover, this approach has the potential to substantially reduce the number of screening interviews while maintaining high sensitivity, thereby facilitating improved early identification and intervention strategies for individuals experiencing DS.

The “I” as Implicated Subject: Performative Confession in Rian Malan’s My Traitor’s Heart

Confessional forms of autobiographical writing have predominated in post-apartheid South African literary studies. This paper discusses Rian Malan’s My Traitor’s Heart, published in 1990 during drastic social and political changes in South Africa’s transition to democracy. It was one of the first and most prominent examples of this genre. Focusing on Malan’s perspective as a white Afrikaner and an “implicated subject”, this study explored how his confessional account grappled with the existential dilemma of post-apartheid Afrikaner identity. Malan simultaneously affirmed his Afrikaner identity to confront his implication in apartheid and sought to establish a legitimate place for this identity within the new multicultural society. Through a close reading of Malan’s strategic performance, this paper argues that his work offers a means of reimagining the collective self in a new community and understanding historical injustices from a multidimensional perspective. Ultimately, My Traitor’s Heart contributes to the post-apartheid project of envisioning a more inclusive psychological and topographical construction of individual and collective identity, with the implicated subject as its centre.

What makes an event significant: an fMRI study on self-defining memories.

Self-defining memories are highly significant personal memories that contribute to an individual's life story and identity. Previous research has identified 4 key subcomponents of self-defining memories: content, affect, specificity, and self-reflection. However, these components were not tested under functional neuroimaging. In this study, we first explored how self-defining memories distinguish themselves from everyday memories (non-self-defining) through their associated brain activity. Next, we evaluated the different self-defining memory subcomponents through their activity in the underlying brain system. Participants recalled both self-defining and non-self-defining memories under functional MRI and evaluated the 4 subcomponents for each memory. Multivoxel pattern analysis uncovered a brain system closely related to the default mode network to discriminate between self-defining and non-self-defining memories. Representational similarity analysis revealed the neural coding of each subcomponent. Self-reflection was coded mainly in the precuneus, middle and inferior frontal gyri, and cingulate, lateral occipital, and insular cortices. To a much lesser extent, content coding was primarily in the left angular gyrus and fusiform gyrus. No region was found to represent information on affect and specificity. Our findings highlight the marked difference in brain processing between significant and non-significant memories, and underscore self-reflection as a predominant factor in the formation and maintenance of self-defining memories, inviting a reassessment of what constitutes significant memories.

Characteristics of asserting the identity of people with dementia in an old people's home

Dementia poses a specific risk to the expression of identity due to the progressive decline of cognitive abilities and the general negative image of people with dementia. Prejudice and negative beliefs often lead to stigma and discrimination, which can depersonalise people with dementia and make it impossible for them to express their identity. The socially constructed image of people with dementia points to the need to explore the concept of identity of people with dementia. Based on qualitative research conducted in an old people's home and narrative interviews with residents with dementia, we demonstrate the possibilities of asserting the identity of people with dementia in an institutional setting. The paper highlights various factors that have a significant impact on the identity formation of residents with dementia. Among the most highlighted are appearance, physical abilities, social environment, activities, emotions, and religion. Residents with dementia develop different strategies to cope with the changes brought about by dementia and ageing (accepting change, redirecting negative thoughts, and maintaining skills through activities and employment). The paper presents the ability of residents with dementia to maintain or even transform their identity in an institutional setting, which has a strong impact on the expression and assertion of the individual's identity.

Self-Report Tool for Identification of Individuals With Coronary Atherosclerosis: The Swedish CardioPulmonary BioImage Study.

Coronary atherosclerosis detected by imaging is a marker of elevated cardiovascular risk. However, imaging involves large resources and exposure to radiation. The aim was, therefore, to test whether nonimaging data, specifically data that can be self-reported, could be used to identify individuals with moderate to severe coronary atherosclerosis. We used data from the population-based SCAPIS (Swedish CardioPulmonary BioImage Study) in individuals with coronary computed tomography angiography (n=25 182) and coronary artery calcification score (n=28 701), aged 50 to 64 years without previous ischemic heart disease. We developed a risk prediction tool using variables that could be assessed from home (self-report tool). For comparison, we also developed a tool using variables from laboratory tests, physical examinations, and self-report (clinical tool) and evaluated both models using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, external validation, and benchmarked against factors in the pooled cohort equation. The self-report tool (n=14 variables) and the clinical tool (n=23 variables) showed high-to-excellent discriminative ability to identify a segment involvement score ≥4 (area under the curve 0.79 and 0.80, respectively) and significantly better than the pooled cohort equation (area under the curve 0.76, P<0.001). The tools showed a larger net benefit in clinical decision-making at relevant threshold probabilities. The self-report tool identified 65% of all individuals with a segment involvement score ≥4 in the top 30% of the highest-risk individuals. Tools developed for coronary artery calcification score ≥100 performed similarly. We have developed a self-report tool that effectively identifies individuals with moderate to severe coronary atherosclerosis. The self-report tool may serve as prescreening tool toward a cost-effective computed tomography-based screening program for high-risk individuals.

Congenital Heart Disease and Genetic Changes in Folate/Methionine Cycles.

Congenital heart disease is one of the most common congenital malformations and thus represents a considerable public health burden. Hence, the identification of individuals and families with an increased genetic predisposition to congenital heart disease (CHD) and its possible prevention is important. Even though CHD is associated with the lack of folate during early pregnancy, the genetic background of folate and methionine metabolism perturbations and their influence on CHD risk is not clear. While some genes, such as those coding for cytosolic enzymes of folate/methionine cycles, have been extensively studied, genetic studies of folate transporters (de)glutamation enzymes and mitochondrial enzymes of the folate cycle are lacking. Among genes coding for cytoplasmic enzymes of the folate cycle, MTHFR, MTHFD1, MTR, and MTRR have the strongest association with CHD, while among genes for enzymes of the methionine cycle BHMT and BHMT2 are the most prominent. Among mitochondrial folate cycle enzymes, MTHFD2 plays the most important role in CHD formation, while FPGS was identified as important in the group of (de)glutamation enzymes. Among transporters, the strongest association with CHD was demonstrated for SLC19A1.

Okweraliikirira and Okwenyamira: Idioms of Psychological Distress Among People Living with HIV in Rakai, Uganda.

Health and illness experiences are positioned within social and cultural contexts. Understanding the mental health and psychological distress of people living with HIV in highly affected communities is critical to addressing their needs and to ensure programming and interventions are targeted and appropriate. Grounded in the ethnomedical theoretical perspective, we conducted qualitative interviews to understand the experience and expression of psychological distress by people living with HIV in Rakai, Uganda. Participants included adults living with HIV (n=20), health workers (counselors, peer health workers, nurses, n=10), and key informants (n=12). Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed/translated, coded, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Two idioms of distress, okweraliikirira (worry/apprehension) and okwenyamira (deep/manythoughts/lots of thoughts) were described as impacting people living with HIV. Both idioms were said to be alleviated by social support or counseling, but if left unaddressed could lead to more severe mental health problems and poor ART adherence. People living with HIV understand their psychological distress through culturally specific idioms; such distress can have deleterious impacts on well-being. Incorporating idioms of distress into screening and treatment for people living with HIV may improve identification of individuals in need and overall health services to address this need.

Rethinking bronchiectasis as an inflammatory disease.

Bronchiectasis is understood to be the result of a complex interaction between infection, impaired mucociliary clearance, inflammation, and lung damage. Current therapeutic approaches to bronchiectasis are heavily focused on management of infection along with enhancing mucus clearance. Long-term antibiotics have had limited success in clinical trials, suggesting a need to re-evaluate the concept of bronchiectasis as an infective disorder. We invoke the example of asthma, for which treatment paradigms shifted away from targeting smooth muscle constriction, towards permanently suppressing airway inflammation, reducing risk and ultimately inducing remission with precision anti-inflammatory treatments. In this Review, we argue that bronchiectasis is primarily a chronic inflammatory disease, requiring early identification of at-risk individuals, and we introduce a novel concept of disease activity with important implications for clinical practice and future research. A new generation of novel anti-inflammatory treatments are under development and repurposing of anti-inflammatory agents from other diseases could revolutionise patient care.
