The Use of Recycled Wood as a Factor in Production Efficiency of Manufacturers in V4 Countries

This article deals with a quantitative assessment of the production efficiency of wood-processing enterprises in the V4 countries. Efficiency was calculated through a non-parametric method of data envelopment analysis. This method allows the construction of an efficiency frontier without having to make any assumptions about its shape. The analyses are based on the financial statements of individual companies from 2018 to 2021. Efficiency assessments are therefore based on the actual performance of individual companies (i.e., quantities of output, costs, and capital). This micro perspective allows us to examine differences in efficiency not only by country but also by company size. A total of 10 companies have been selected in the V4 countries that can be identified as actively using recycled material in their production. The results of our empirical analyses show that this group of »recyclers« performs better than other market players in terms of median efficiency. Even in 2020, which can be marked as the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, overall, these companies had better results. Our results also show that the efficiency is significantly affected by company size (which is also reflected in economies of scale).

Analysis and assessment of the Russian IT market using business analytics tools

The article presents the main methods and results of research of the Russian IT market using business analytics tools. The source data for the analysis were various indicators of the IT market and its segments for the period from 2011 to 2022. The Power BI business intelligence system was used to collect, visualize and analyze aggregated data, and statistical calculations were performed using the Pandas library of the Python language. Interactive reports developed in Power BI allowed us to analyse not only the IT market as a whole, but also its segment - the IT services market, as well as to assess the state of the website development services market. The obtained research results correlate with authoritative studies in this area. The approach, methods and tools for analysing the IT market presented in the article are rather plain, versatile and effective for researching and assessing the performance of individual companies and industries.

A fuzzy model for financial performance measurement of real estate investment trusts: comparison of investment areas

PurposeThis study aims to present the financial performance of companies and investment areas in the real estate investment trust (REIT) industry.Design/methodology/approachA fuzzy model for financial performance measurement (FM-FPM) was proposed through the collaboration of fuzzy axiomatic design (FAD) and fuzzy entropy weighting (FEW). For the data, financial ratios were used, and their importance and functional requirements were collected via a questionnaire survey.FindingsThe FM-FPM is a beneficial model to be used for a REIT industry based on the structured procedures of FAD and FEW techniques. It can be suitable to regularly evaluate the performance of REITs and their investment areas in financial means, especially in today’s turbulent business environment. The Turkish market that was considered to show the practical applicability of the FM-FPM demonstrated specifically that diversified real estate was found to rank first, followed by mixed-buildings, warehouses, shopping malls and hotels, respectively.Research limitations/implicationsThe FM-FPM can be employed for REIT industries in other countries and adapted to different industries. However, more respondents or a different set of criteria might lead to different outputs.Practical implicationsThe FM-FPM may guide REIT managers and investors while making their decisions and controlling the performance of REITs and investment areas.Social implicationsThe FM-FPM may encourage low- and middle-income investors to make good use of their savings.Originality/valueThe research is first (1) to offer a FPM model in order to determine investable areas in a REIT industry and (2) to employ multiple criteria decision-making tools in order to measure the financial performance of individual companies and investment areas in a REIT industry.

How Does the Degree of Competition in an Industry Affect a Company’s Environmental Management and Performance?

Environmental management, which was recognized as a functional part of corporate management, has recently been recognized as a strategic element of all business activities. It can be defined as a series of management activities to improve environmental performance throughout the business process and simultaneously achieve profitability and sustainability. Accordingly, businesses are now abandoning the existing management philosophy that economic and environmental feasibility are inevitably in conflict and establishing strategies and methods to achieve both. Meanwhile, industry affects the business performance of individual companies. Since the performance of a company tends to be influenced by the intensity of competition in an industry, it is necessary to analyze the structural factors that determine the intensity of competition in an industry in order to predict the future performance of a company. Therefore, we studied how environmental management affects corporate performance given the level of industry competition. The results are as follows. First, environmental management positively impacts corporate performance. Second, a high level of competition within an industry moderates the relationship between environmental management and corporate performance. By verifying the influence of the industry to which a company belongs, that is, the level of competition within the industry, we confirm that a company’s environmental management can be used strategically to gain a competitive advantage. With the finding that the impact of a company’s environmental practices differs by industry in line with the degree of competition, we expect this study to be helpful for future research into strategic ESG activities.

Innovation Strategies for Textile Companies in Bangladesh: Development Using Quadrant Analysis Based on a Productivity Index

Bangladesh currently occupies a vital place in the textile industry, but it is beset with critical problems, such as insufficient infrastructure, low labor efficiency, and the lack of awareness regarding innovation and political volatility among CEOs. To overcome this crisis, an essential task is to measure the performance of individual companies because of the reality that “what you measure is what you get”. In consideration of these issues, this study developed a research framework on the basis of quadrant analysis and the Malmquist productivity index to capture the overall situation of Bangladeshi textile companies and provide useful information. The framework was then used to establish innovation strategies for such companies. The results of case studies indicated that even though improvements to the internal efficiency of these companies are sufficient, most of them need to innovate technology and policy. Applying the research framework to various fields can advance the formulation of optimized strategies tailored to a given company.

What drives the economic performance of suppliers in global value chains/global production networks – tier, ownership, size, specialization, or region?

ABSTRACT The paper investigates the economic performance of Czech electro-engineering companies in relation to their tier, ownership, size, level of specialization, and host region in order to scrutinize one of the key assumptions about functional upgrading, namely that lead firms and higher tier suppliers capture more value than lower tier suppliers. This issue has fundamental policy implications, as global value chain (GVC)/global production network (GPN) policy recommendations revolve mainly around two paradigms: to ‘plug-in’ into GVC/GPN and to ‘move-up the chain’, meaning to upgrade functionally. The paper contributes to the GVC/GPN literature by scrutinizing the underinvestigated electro-engineering industry, accounting for variegated levels of specialization of particular companies in the industry, combining sectoral and regional perspectives (i.e. the modes of strategic coupling), and providing disaggregated data for individual companies instead of values aggregated by tiers. The results show large variation in the economic performance of individual companies, yet ownership and tier are the key factors driving economic results. Companies operating outside the production networks performed strongly in terms of profitability, while maintaining the same level of wages as other domestic companies in the electro-engineering industry. Thus, the authors conclude that ‘plug-in’ imperative should be carefully considered within specific industrial and regional contexts.

THE AIM OF THE PAPER One channel of communication with stakeholders about environmental, social and governance (ESG) information is the non-financial report. Publication of such reports is compulsory for public interest entities in the European Union from the 2017 business year onwards. In our present research, we examined this regulation and the reporting-related motivations and decisions of the companies listed on the Hungarian stock exchange subject to Directive 2014/95/EU. The aim of our study is to identify the factors influencing the content and format of sustainability-related disclosures. METHODOLOGYIn the course of our research, we conducted expert interviews with communication professionals of reporting companies, an auditor, and an institutional investor. Corporate communication related to sustainability is an integral part of the work of all our interviewees, whether they are responsible for producing of such data or are present as users of ESG information.MOST IMPORTANT RESULTSThe motivating role of the information needs of the stakeholders formulated in the literature has been proved: key roles are primarily played by investors, as well as employees and customers. The best-known standard is the GRI, and entities follow the requirements of a number of rating agencies when compiling reports. The interviews revealed that it is a challenge for reporting firms and stakeholders to produce good-quality data and to evaluate those as a consequence of the diversity of non-financial information. RECOMMENDATIONS Due to the diversity of non-financial information and the wide range of forms of communication, it is difficult for stakeholders to compare the non-financial performance of individual companies. It is therefore recommended for entities to use one of the widely accepted standards (e.g. GRI). In the interests of stakeholders, regulators are encouraged to consider a standardized format for reporting purposes. Acknowledgements: This research was supported by the project nr. The Influence of the Quality of Education on the Knowledge Economy: the Czech Republic in International Comparison

The knowledge economy consists in the creation of added value based on the use of knowledge not only due to manual production but especially due to the growing importance of education and the use of scientifi c knowledge in terms of the overall competitiveness of the country. The education of the population is thus a crucial factor determining the level of economic development and quality of life. The educational structure of the population aff ects the performance of the whole economy, as well as the performance of individual companies. Human development indicators, which are published in the UN Human Development Report, include education quality indicators. The paper aims to perform a comparative analysis of education quality indicators in the Czech Republic and an international comparison. Based on selected statistical results of comparative analysis, determine the order of states in the evaluation of the quality of education. Furthermore, using the results, compile a SWOT analysis of the quality of education in the Czech Republic, based on which the fundamental problems of Czech education will be defi ned and recommendations for improving the quality of education in the Czech Republic as one of the key determinants of the knowledge economy.

LARGE CORPORATIONS IN PROJECTS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF RESOURCES IN SIBERIA AND THE FAR EAST

In modern Russia, large industrial corporations, some of which are the direct "heirs" of socialist factories, are traditionally the main initiators, operators and beneficiaries of projects to develop the resources of Siberia and the Far East. An approach to assessing the impact of large-scale natural resource development projects on the economic performance of individual regions through the performance of individual companies involved in these projects is proposed. Testing the approach based on the financial statements of 300 largest companies in the real sector of Siberia and the Far East for 2014-2019 showed that resource projects of large corporations are the main revenue generator, and their dynamics largely determine the trajectory of economic development of individual regions. Financial indicators of divisions of large corporations. the companies involved in these projects grew faster than the rest of the companies. At the same time, a significant part of the largest projects for the development of mineral resources has not yet reached the stage when a noticeable decline in volume and cost indicators begins, and therefore large corporations - operators of these projects will continue to play the role of key players determining the economic growth potential of Siberia and the Far East.

CHANGES IN THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF JAPANESE ELECTRONICS MANUFACTURERS

The purpose of this research is to compare and analyse the actual selection of the area where a Japanese company expands overseas in the electrical industry and the influence on the business results of each individual company. The first purpose of this research is macro analysis, where the aim is to understand and consider the decision-making of Japanese electronics manufacturers as ?collective intelligence? about the trend of locations where the bases are deployed as a whole. The second purpose of this research is a microscopic analysis of the influence of the choice of overseas base development on the business performance of individual companies. The influence of the degree of fitness between strategy and organization on companies? competitive advantage and profitability was focused. As a research methodology, a database was constructed and analysed regarding actual overseas expansion trends of companies. As a result of macro analysis, compared with the rapid changes in the global economic environment, the actual situation of overseas expansion of Japanese electronics manufacturers has not changed much from the past, and it will be a challenge for Japanese companies. As a result of a micro analysis, a model was verified that showed the optimal choices for overseas expansion through indicators related to the strategy, such as the degree of vertical integration and diversification of companies.

Identifying Corporate Sustainability Issues by Analyzing Shareholder Resolutions: A Machine-Learning Text Analytics Approach

Corporations have embraced the idea of corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) under the general framework of sustainability. Studies have measured and analyzed the impact of internal sustainability efforts on the performance of individual companies, policies, and projects. This exploratory study attempts to extract useful insight from shareholder sustainability resolutions using machine learning-based text analytics. Prior research has studied corporate sustainability disclosures from public reports. By studying shareholder resolutions, we gain insight into the shareholders’ perspectives and objectives. The primary source for this study is the Ceres sustainability shareholder resolution database, with 1737 records spanning 2009–2019. The study utilizes a combination of text analytic approaches (i.e., word cloud, co-occurrence, row-similarities, clustering, classification, etc.) to extract insights. These are novel methods of transforming textual data into useful knowledge about corporate sustainability endeavors. This study demonstrates that stakeholders, such as shareholders, can influence corporate sustainability via resolutions. The incorporation of text analytic techniques offers insight to researchers who study vast collections of unstructured bodies of text, improving the understanding of shareholder resolutions and reaching a wider audience.

B2B analytics in the airline market: Harnessing the power of consumer big data

This paper utilizes market-level data to explore the relative performance of individual companies amongst defined competitors. We show the potential of using consumer clickstream data, an important type of big data, to create a new set of B2B analytical frameworks. In the markets where complex interactions between competitors, search intermediaries and consumers create a network, B2B relationships can be inferred from consumer search patterns, and can then be modeled to gauge the online performance. A commercial dataset from ComScore’s US panel of one million users is used to illustrate a new approach to measure and evaluate the online performance of competitors in the US airline market. The methodology and associated performance framework demonstrate the potential for new forms of market intelligence based on the visualization of market networks, online performance calculated from matrix algorithms, the measurement of the impact of search intermediaries, and the identification of latent relationships. This research makes theoretical and empirical contributions to the debate on the use of big data for B2B market analytics. B2B managers can use this approach to extend their network horizon from an egocentric to a network view of competition and map out their competitive landscape from the perspective of the customer.

Much Ado about Nothing: The (Lack of) Economic Impact of Data Privacy Breaches

ABSTRACTIn this paper, we examine the consequences of data breaches for a breached company. We find the economic consequences are, on average, very small for breached companies. On average, breaches result in less than −0.3 percent cumulative abnormal returns in the short window around the breach disclosure. Except for a few catastrophic breaches, the nominal difference in cumulative abnormal returns between breach companies and the matched companies disappears within days after the breach. We also test whether data breaches affect future accounting measures of performance, audit and other fees, and future Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 reports of material internal control weaknesses, but find no differences between breach and matched companies. Our results address the question why companies are not spending more to reduce breaches. We conclude by providing a few explanations of why there appears to be an effect at the economy-wide level, but no noticeable effect on individual company performance.

Company performance and environmental efficiency: A case study for shipping enterprises

Traditional performance evaluation seldom considers the side-effects of a production process—the negative impact of pollution. Even when taking this into consideration, a high ranking is not necessarily equivalent to greater environmental efficiency, as the latter is based on outputs per environmental resource used. This may create anomalies in a company's environmental performance evaluation, as well as in its setting of environmental management standards. This study illustrates the problem by evaluating the economic and cargo efficiencies of shipping companies both with and without considering the negative impact of emissions, and compares this with their environmental efficiencies. The efficiency measures with and without adjusting for the negative environmental impacts are found to be similar, which are different to the environmental efficiency. The container shipping sector has greater economic efficiency, while bulk shipping has greater cargo efficiency. The similarities and inconsistencies among these three measures are highlighted, with possible explanations as to the performance of individual companies. Implications are provided for public policy makers to assist in reducing emissions from shipping, as well as marketing strategies for shipping companies and strategies for shipping investors.

Corporate sustainability measurement and assessment of Czech manufacturing companies using a composite indicator

This paper discusses the measurement and assessment of corporate sustainability by a composite indicator. The aim of the paper is a construction of a composite indicator Index corporate sustainability” (ICS). A tool for measuring and assessing corporate sustainability is an appropriately designed model called the “Sustainable Environmental, Social, Governance and Economic Model (SEESG Model). The composite indicator ICS integrates 5 financial (economic) and 14 non-financial, environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) performance indicators Iji, which are determined in a stepwise fashion from a basic set of performance indicators using the principal component analysis (PCA) modelling. The composite indicator ICS is one of possible ways to create a tool for measuring and assessing corporate sustainability that allows assessment of companies by a set of financial and non-financial indicators in various areas of their performance, thus enabling a detailed analysis and determination of the impact of various performance areas and factors in complex corporate performance. An important characteristic of the composite indicator is the possibility to easily make comparisons and rankings of companies in a particular sector, and estimate whether they are heading towards sustainability. The use of benchmarking for company-to-company comparisons makes it possible to interpret summary information and to quantify differences in the performance of individual companies using graphic visualization. For this reason, ICS can be offered as a consistent and flexible benchmarking for owners, managers and investors. Relationships and Trust Modeling in Twitter Using Game Theory: The Supply Chain Perspective

Supply chain has been one of the most popular and efficient ways of exploring more benefits across businesses from the perspective of particular enterprise, with the objective of improving the long-term performance of individual companies. With the rapid development of social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc., social media has become one of the most valuable businesses due to largest user coverage, widest influential dissemination and highest commercial value. From the perspective of enterprises, leveraging social media for e-commerce are gradually being taken seriously. Indeed, social media helps compress the supply chain by eliminating unnecessary intermediate links. In this paper, we consider the roles in Twitter users (i.e., brands and audiences) as the nodes in supply chain, and simulate the social interactions between them as the collaboration decisions among supply chain members. Specifically, we consider social interactions as transactions, and sentiments as trust information. In this way, we tailor the traditional game model for modeling relationships among supply chain members in the context of Twitter, and propose a long-term game model based on trust.

Toward supply chain-wide sustainability assessment: a conceptual framework and an aggregation method to assess supply chain performance

Due to factors such as increasingly stringent regulations and growing public awareness, companies are trying to reduce exposure to economic, environmental and socio-political risks in their supply chains. This paper addresses the problem of assessing such sustainability issues supply chain-wide. First, to clarify the status quo regarding current approaches, it reviews the literature and then groups the various approaches. Second, the paper provides a conceptual framework for supply chain sustainability assessment. Finally, an overview of available methods is provided, and three approaches to assessing and aggregating sustainability indicators are proposed. These approaches allow for the aggregation of the sustainability performance of individual companies into a supply chain-wide sustainability performance by means of quantitative and qualitative indicators. The results are based on a literature review of sustainability assessment in supply chains as well as on focus group workshops with experts from the European automotive and electronics industry. This paper contributes to the theory and practice of sustainability assessment in supply chains by providing a literature analysis, seven key industrial requirements, a conceptual framework and aggregation approaches. The framework and the methods integrate a comprehensive sustainability perspective emphasizing the understudied social dimension. They lay the groundwork for defining specific indicators and for an integration into a software solution for supply chain sustainability data exchange. This enables corporate decision makers to assess and trace the supply chain sustainability performance of products and organizations.

Listen from Microblog -- Do People Tell Us Their Company Performance

Prior research has shown that microblogs have the capability to predict the trend of the whole stock market. These findings arouse interest in the question of whether this medium can be used as a non-financial information source to evaluate the performance of individual companies. This paper addresses this question by evaluating individual company performance based on employees’ microblogs. We collected recent three-year microblog histories of 6,735 employees of 50 companies, analyzed employee opinion at different levels, extracted main topics, identified topics and words related to company performance, and demonstrated ways in which employee opinions can reflect company performance. The findings suggest that, after careful processing, microblogs can be useful non-financial information sources to help in auditing and accounting.

The proposal for innovative products and services seems to be the right way for companies who want to enter in this context as protagonists. This paper analyzes the data about a region of southern Italy, Apulia, trying to figure out what could be the importance of technological innovation on the performance of individual companies; the causes of the lack of innovation in Puglia and possible strategies to exit by this stage of impasse will be investigated.

A stochastic simulation approach for production scheduling and investment planning in the tile industry

The present paper aims to develop a simulation tool for tile manufacturing companies. The paper shows how simulation approach can be useful to support management decisions related to production scheduling and investment planning. Particularly the aim is to demonstrate the importance of an information system in tile firms. The Factory Data Model (FDM) parameter is used to describe the activities in ceramic tile industries operating in different European countries. A process- based analysis of tile manufacturers is undertaken and individual company performance is quantified by Key Performance Indicators (KPI). The overall model is composed of different processes, which are coded into Scilab environment and matched together to arrange a stochastic simulator. The simulations results are used to show how management decisions can significantly effect the KPIs. The simulations highlight the effects on KPIs of three specific parameters: the length of scheduling period, the quantity of stock needed and the reliability of the information system supporting orders. The results clearly show that the effect of allowing the presence of unattended orders within the outstanding orders list always has a remarkable negative influence on KPIs. Results also suggest that the presence of sub-groups of homogeneous tiles, based on colour variation, is one of the most important factors affecting a tile manufacturer’s performance. The results of the simulations have two different practical implications. Firstly, they demonstrate the importance of information systems in tile companies, suggest to evaluate investment in information technology and indicate the value of promoting an information culture in the entire work forces. Secondly, they show the potential of simulation tools development to support decision making in a BPR (Business Processes Re-engineering) scenario.
