Three New Species of Anthosomid Copepods Parasitic on South Indian Fishes

Parasitic copepods from Indian fishes described in this paper are: Lernanthropus cruciatus sp. n., from the gills of a sciaenid caught at Vizhingom, Kerala; Lernanthropodes trachinoti sp. n., from the gills of Trachinotus blochii at Vizhingom, Kerala; and Lernanthropodes chorinemi sp. n., from the gills of Chorinemus lysan, at Trivandrum. Of the three species described here, the first belongs to the genus Lernanthropus Blainville and the other two to Lernanthropodes Bere (1936). The latter genus hitherto contained only one species, L. cucullus Bere, so far recorded only from the Gulf of Mexico. Two more species are added here. Neosprostonia, a new name for Sprostonia Jain, 1959

In a recent issue of Parasitology, I have described (Jain, 1959) a new genus of freshwater Tetraonchinae, Sprostonia, from the gill filaments of some Indian fishes. In a personal communication Dr Nora G. Sproston has kindly pointed out to me that the same name has been used by Bychowsky in his monograph on Monogenea (1957), published by the Institute of the Zoological Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R., for Sprostonia squatinae (MacCallum, 1921) which he makes genotype and removes it from Trochopodinae to a new subfamily Megalocotylinae in Capsalidae. I therefore change the name of the genus which I have described to Neosprostonia, Sprostonia being preoccupied.

A new genus,Sprostonia, is erected in the Family Dactylogyridae, subfamily Tetraonchinae, from the study of trematodes of some Indian freshwater fishes, from Lucknow, India. The new genus differs from allied genera by the characteristically two-piece shape of the ventral bar, the articulation of the cirrus and accessory piece together at the base and the presence of a dextral vagina. The genotypeS. indicasp.nov. was recovered from the gills ofEutropiichthys vacha. Three other new species,S. wallagonia, S. gomtiaandS. asiatica, were also recovered from other Indian fishes and assigned to the new genus. The text is illustrated with twenty-one camera lucida figures and is followed by a key to the species of the new genus,Sprostonia.

Trematode parasites of gill filaments in fresh-water fishes have received very little attention in India. The group Gyrodactyloidea has, however, been investigated by a number of workers. Price (1938) gave the earliest record by describing Dactylogyrus moorthyi from Mysore. Thapar (1948) described a new genus Paradactylogyrus from Lucknow. Jain (1952, '52a, '55, '57, '57a, and '57b) described Haplocleidus gomttius, Thaparocleidus wallagonius, Urocleidus notopterus, Mizelleus indicus, Dactylogyrus multispiralis and 3 species of the genus Neodacytlogyrus, namely N. calbasi, N. indicus and N. cotius, from Lucknow. Recently Baugh (1957) has erected a new genus Neogyrodactylus from West Bengal. The author in 1952 started a systematic investigation of monogenetic trematodes of the gill filaments of fresh-water fishes available in the Lucknow region. It was found that most fishes carry heavy infections of gill trematodes. The present paper describes a new genus in the subfamily Tetraonchinae, based on 2 new forms.

Three Lernaeid Copepods Parasitic on South Indian Fishes

The three lernaeids described here belong to the genus Lerneaenicus. W\ilson (1917) listed twelve species of this genus. Six more, (L. cerberus Leigh Sharpe, 1927; L. hemirharnphi Kirtisinghe, 1932; L. gnavius Leigh Sharpe, 1934; L. gnathoricus Leigh Sharpe, 1934; L. seeri Kirtisinghe, 1934; L. savori Yamaguti, 1939) as well as a new variety L. sardinae var longicornis Boudoin, 1918, have been added since. In the present paper, L. hemirhamphi Kirtisinghe, is described more fully than before and a brief note on its anatomy is added. The other two lernaeids, L. nemipteri and L. stromatei are new species which are described below.

Three New Copepod Parasites of the Ribbon Fish from South India

Since 1905, when Wilson prepared a key for the over seventy-five known species of Caligus, more than forty-three species have been described. Yet of this number, those parasitic on Indian fishes appear limited to the few described by Bassett-Smith (1898a, b, c). There has been no intensive study of these forms, before or after this author. In the present paper, three new species of Caligus, parasitic on the ribbon fish Trichiurus haumela Forsker, one of the commonest fish in the markets of Madras, South India, are described.

A study of the medulla oblongata of cyprinodont fishes with special reference to their feeding habits

It is well known that the hindbrains of fishes show considerable variation in size and structure. Drawing a correlation between the feeding habits and the structure of the hindbrains, Evans (1931-2) and Bhimachar (1935) have divided cyprinoid fishes into (1) the mud feeders which show enlarged vagal lobes ; (2) those which grope and grub for food (always with barbels) showing prominent facial lobes ; and (3) fish which feed by sight at the surface of water exhibiting very small vagal and facial lobes. To the last group belong the British roach, rudd, chub, dace and bleak, and the Indian rasbora, nauria, danio and chela. The purpose of this paper is to show that the cyprinodonts conform to this group of sight-feeding fishes. It was on account of the perfect surface-feeding habit of most of the cyprinodont fishes that Dr. Evans suggested to me that it would be worth while examining their medullae oblongatae. In a personal communication Professor C. J. Herrick states : “ The correlation of habits of fishes with their anatomical structure is an easily accessible problem, and there is no point at which it can be attacked that will not yield new and interesting results. The field has scarcely been explored at all.” Furthermore, an attempt is made to assign a definite position to the central acoustic area or lobe as a regional subdivision of the medulla oblongata. Material There are very few cyprinodont fishes in India. The forms that have been worked out in this paper are : Gambusia affinis, Lebistes reticulatus, Haplochilus melanostigma and Panchax parvus. Haplochilus and Panchax are Indian types ; the other two are imported forms. They are all small, carnivorous and surface-feeding forms. The ground-feeding cyprinodonts which are confined to South America are not described here. The brains of the above forms have been fixed in Bouin’s fluid and the sections have been stained in iron haematoxylin. The brains of a few specimens were fixed in 5% potassium bichromate solution and the sections stained by the Weigert-Pal method and counterstained in paracarmine (modification of the method of Kappers). To illustrate the central acoustic lobe clearly the figures have been drawn from sections stained in iron haematoxylin. The Weigert material has been useful in studying the fibre tracts and their distribution clearly.
