Evaluation of PVC@Silver Nanocomposite as Sensor for Low Limit Detection of Cadmium Ion By Surface Plasmon Resonance Based Method

AbstractThis study explores the development of a PVC@Silver nanocomposite for enhanced detection of cadmium ions in water samples. Various characterization techniques confirmed the successful incorporation of silver nanoparticles into the polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix across different concentrations (1–4%). X-ray diffraction revealed the face-centered cubic crystalline structure of the silver nanoparticles, with the intensities of the (111), (200), (220), and (311) peaks increasing with higher Ag concentrations. The average crystallite sizes ranged from 26.1 nm (3% Ag) to 30.0 nm (2% Ag). Dynamic light scattering showed nanoparticle sizes of 24–43 nm, while zeta potential values of -24 to -40 mV indicated reasonable colloidal stability. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis demonstrated a decreasing surface area from 30.09 m2/g (1% Ag) to 25.27 m2/g (3% Ag), attributed to pore filling by silver nanostructures. Significantly, the PVC@Silver nanocomposite facilitated sensitive detection of Cd(II) ions using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), exhibiting an SPR angle shift of 26.30° with intensity values ranging from 10.80 (4% Ag) to 12.19 (3% Ag). UV–vis spectra revealed a prominent surface plasmon resonance band at 420–430 nm, indicating the presence of silver nanoparticles. The optical band gap varied from 4.51eV (1% Ag) to 4.12eV (4% Ag).

Synthesis and biophysical characterization of porous bi-phase calcium phosphate/gelatin-PVA scaffold: Enhanced antibacterial, osteoconductivity and anticancer activity via silver nanoparticles and methotrexate incorporation

In our relentless pursuit of advancing bone tissue regeneration, we have meticulously crafted multifunctional scaffolds that transcend traditional approaches. These freeze-dried scaffolds, composed of biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) intricately woven into a gelatin-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix, harbor the potential to revolutionize regenerative medicine. The scaffolds are characterized with XRD, FTIR, SEM, 3D images of the SEM, mechanical properties, swelling and degradation tests, drug release, cell viability, antibacterial and anticancer tests. Our in-situ synthesis of BCP within the PVA framework yielded a biphasic structure comprising hydroxyapatite (HAp) and beta-tricalcium phosphate. These scaffolds exhibit good mechanical compressive strength (ranging from 28 to 173 kPa) and boast high porosity levels (approaching 80 %) enhance the processes of nutrition and waste removal. The incorporation of silver nanoparticles (Ag) introduces antimicrobial prowess, resulting in a complex scaffold texture characterized by well-defined pores and rugged walls. The interconnectivity within this fibrous network contributes to enhanced mechanical properties. Additionally, our scaffolds facilitate the sustained release of methotrexate (MTX), a potent anticancer agent. Within the first day, MTX is promptly delivered, potentially impacting cancer cells. These Ag-containing scaffolds effectively combat common pathogens, demonstrating significant antibacterial activity as an essential property for preventing infections at the implantation site. Notably, our scaffolds, whether infused with Ag or MTX (at a concentration of 0.25 wt%), exhibit no toxic effects on Vero and MG-63 cells within a 24-hour window. However, higher Ag content (2.0 wt%) shows cytotoxicity. In summary, our multifaceted scaffolds, poised at the intersection of science and creativity, hold immense promise for bone tissue engineering. Further investigations will explore long-term effects, broader microbial contexts, and in vivo models.

Incorporating silver nanoparticles into electrospun nanofibers of casein/polyvinyl alcohol to develop scaffolds for tissue engineering

Developing novel antimicrobial wound dressings that have the potential to address the challenges associated with chronic wounds is highly imperative in providing effective infection control and wound healing support. Biocompatible electrospun nanofibers with their high porosity and surface area enabling efficient drug loading and delivery have been investigated in this regard as viable candidates for chronic wound care. Here, we design Casein/Polyvinyl alcohol (CAN/PVA) nanofibers reinforced with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by the electrospinning technique to develop diabetic wound healing scaffolds. The prepared samples were characterized using spectroscopic and electron microscopic techniques. The biocompatibility of the polymer samples were assessed using 3 T3 fibroblast cell lines and the maximum cell viability was found to 95 % at a concentration of 50 μg/mL for the prepared nanofibers. Scratch assay tests were also performed to analyze the wound healing activity of the nanofibers wherein they demonstrated increased migration and proliferation of fibroblast 3 T3 cells. Moreover, these nanofibers also exhibit antibacterial efficiency against Gram-negative bacteria, Escherichia coli (E.coli). Therefore, the antimicrobial nature of the electrospun nanofibers coupled with their moisture absorption properties and wound healing ability render them as effective materials for wound dressing applications.

MnO2/AgNPs Composite as Flexible Electrode Material for Solid-State Hybrid Supercapacitor

A MnO2/AgNP nanocomposite was synthesized using a sonochemical method and investigated as an electrode material in a solid-state hybrid supercapacitor. Aquivion’s sodium and lithium electrolyte membrane serves as an electrolyte and separator. For comparison, MnO2 was used as the active material. The developed supercapacitor containing a carbon xerogel as a negative electrode, the MnO2/AgNP composite as a positive electrode and a Na+-exchange membrane demonstrated the highest performance characteristics. These results indicate that the incorporation of silver nanoparticles into the MnO2 structure is a prospect for obtaining an active composite electrode material for solid-state supercapacitors.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) biosynthesis by Komagataeibacter hansenii RM-03 using agricultural waste as substrates and BNC-silver nanocomposite preparation

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a remarkable biopolymer synthesised by bacterium, exhibiting exceptional properties. However, conventional Hestrin-Schramm (HS) medium, particularly the carbon source, poses challenges of high costs and low productivity. This study explores BNC biosynthesis on a modified HS medium, employing agricultural wastes (sugarcane molasses, banana peel, and pineapple peel) as carbon sources, and compares the overall yield of BNC produced. Sugarcane molasses proved to be the most effective, yielding the highest BNC concentration (8.19 g/L) after 7 days, followed by pineapple peel (2.16 g/L) and banana peel (2.11 g/L). Extensive research was conducted to enhance properties of BNC by an environmentally friendly approach, incorporating silver nanoparticles (AgNP) utilising Momordica charantia fruit extract, resulting in a BNC-Ag nanocomposite. The synthesis involved mixing 1 mM silver nitrate (AgNO3) with 15 mL of M. charantia fruit extract to reduce Ag ions to AgNP, which was confirmed by UV-vis spectroscopy with an absorbance peak between 400 and 410 nm. Characterisation using FESEM and TEM on the synthesized BNC showed minimal impact on BNC fiber diameter from waste-derived carbon sources. XRD indicated slight variations in crystallinity index, with the highest (85%) in TSM-derived BNC. FTIR analysis revealed similar chemical profiles across all BNC, indicating cellulose formation. The BNC-Ag nanocomposite exhibited potent antibacterial activity against multi-drug resistant strains (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) through disc diffusion method with inhibition zones up to 16.8 mm. Overall, the findings from this study contribute to the development of environmentally sustainable for the production of functional BNC materials with enhanced properties for diverse applications.

Sodium Alginate–Soy Protein Isolate–Chitosan–Capsaicin–Nanosilver Multifunctional Antibacterial Composite Gel

We constructed a sodium alginate/soy protein isolate/chitosan gel system and incorporated silver nanoparticles reduced by capsaicin into the system, forming a sodium alginate–soy protein isolate–chitosan–capsaicin–silver nanoparticle composite gel (SA/SPI/CTS/CAP/Ag). In tests, the SA/SPI/CTS/CAP/Ag gel exhibited excellent antimicrobial properties. Using the agar diffusion method, the inhibition zone diameter for Staphylococcus aureus was determined to be 29.5 mm. Soy protein isolate (SPI), containing a large number of hydrophobic amino acid residues, effectively enhanced the moisture retention capability of the gel and improved its stability to a certain extent at an appropriate addition concentration. In a milk preservation experiment, the SA/SPI/CTS/CAP/Ag gel significantly extended the shelf-life of the milk. In dye adsorption experiments, the adsorption curve of the SA/SPI/CTS/CAP/Ag gel well fitted a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. It showed a degree of adsorption capacity for methylene blue, malachite green, methyl orange, and Congo red, with the most significant adsorption effect for malachite green being 42.48 mg/g. Considering its outstanding antimicrobial performance, preservation ability, and adsorption capacity, the SA/SPI/CTS/CAP/Ag gel holds significant potential in wastewater treatment and as an antimicrobial gel in the exploration of food preservation.

Silver and Palladium-Embedded Acrylamide-Based Hybrid Cryogels as Antimicrobial Agents

Silver and palladium nanoparticles were prepared by in situ chemical reduction using Sodium Borohydride as a reducing agent at 18°C. The synthesis of pure and hybrid cryogels and the incorporation of silver and palladium nanoparticles inside the cryogel network, was confirmed by x-ray diffraction analysis and energy dispersive x-ray respectively. The antibacterial activities were checked by using the hybrid cryogels against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC: 2593) and Escherichia coli (ATCC: 25922) bacteria. After taking into account the facile synthetic process and the adsorption performance, these cryogels can serve as good candidates for antibacterial purposes.

Improving the optical, thermal, mechanical, electrical properties and antibacterial activity of PVA-chitosan by biosynthesized Ag nanoparticles: Eco-friendly nanocomposites for food packaging applications

In this study, nanocomposite films were produced by blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (Cs) polymers with 70 % PVA and 30 % Cs, incorporating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via a solution-casting method. The research aims to investigate the impact of the biosynthesized Ag NPs by Chenopodium murale leaf extract on optical, morphological, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and antibacterial properties. XRD analysis showed a decrease in crystallinity degree with Ag NPs addition. TEM revealed Ag NPs in cubic and spherical shapes with an average size of 23.4 nm. SEM and AFM indicated surface morphology changes. FT-IR spectra showed interaction between Ag ions and the blend. The energy gap decreased with increasing Ag NPs concentration. TGA exhibited enhanced thermal stability. Mechanical properties improved significantly. AC electrical conductivity and dielectric parameters were studied. Antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was observed. Overall, PVA/Cs-Ag NPs films show promise for food packaging and optoelectronic applications.

Chitosan-Based Scaffolds Incorporated with Silver Nanoparticles for the Treatment of Infected Wounds.

Bacterial infections are major problems in wound care due to their impact on the retarded process of wound healing, leading to chronic wounds. Most of the presently utilized wound dressing products exhibit poor antimicrobial properties. Wound dressings formulated from chitosan have been reported to be effective for treating infected wounds, resulting from the antibacterial properties of chitosan. The antibacterial properties of chitosan-based wound dressings can be further enhanced by incorporating metallic nanoparticles into them, such as silver, zinc, titanium, etc. The incorporation of silver nanoparticles into chitosan-based wound dressings has been widely explored in the design of antimicrobial wound dressings. The incorporation of silver nanoparticles into chitosan-based wound dressings promotes accelerated wound-healing processes due to enhanced antimicrobial activity. The accelerated wound healing by these metal-based nanoparticles is via the regulation of re-epithelialization and inflammation without affecting the viability of normal cells. However, there have been few reports that evaluate these wound dressings in infectious animal models to prove their efficacy. The in vivo toxicity of silver nanoparticles still needs to be addressed, revealing the need for further preclinical and clinical trials. The fabrication of wound dressings incorporated with silver nanoparticles has not been fully explored, especially for wounds requiring immediate treatment. The possible interactions between silver nanoparticles and chitosan scaffolds that result in synergistic effects still need to be understood and studied. This review provides a comprehensive report on the preclinical outcomes of chitosan wound dressing materials loaded with silver nanoparticles for managing infected wounds.

A novel approach to enhance the ionic conductivity of silver nanoparticles incorporated PVA:NaBr polymer electrolyte films via fast neutron irradiation

This study investigates the unprecedented impact of fast neutron irradiation on the structural, electrical, and morphological properties of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). The SPE, a poly (vinylalcohol) (PVA)-sodium bromide (NaBr) based matrix with the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), was prepared via a solution casting method and subjected to various time intervals of fast neutron irradiation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a distinct trend in the polymer electrolyte sample's amorphous phase, with decreased levels at lower neutron fluence and augmented levels at higher fluences. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy highlighted plausible interactions leading to chain scission and cross-linking. Optical investgations below 300 nm exhibited increased absorbance and a shifted position of the surface plasmon resonance peak correlated with AgNPs. Validation of structural changes in the Ag-incorporated PVA-NaBr system was supported by reduced bandgap and elevation in Urbach energy, corroborating FTIR findings. Enhanced thermal stability was confirmed using thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis. Morphological modification upon irradiation were evident via Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). Transport properties evaluated by Nyquist plot fitting showcased escalating room temperature conductivity with neutron fluence, and the highest conductivity obtained was 4.38 × 10−3 S/cm, an order higher than the pristine sample. Transference number measurements (TNM) indicated that the primary charge carriers are ions rather than electrons. This novel approach confirms that neutron irradiation can be used as a potential way to obtain highly conductive polymer electrolyte films.

Nano boron nitride laminated poly(ethyl methacrylate)/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite films imprinted with silver nanoparticles as gas barrier and bacteria resistant packaging materials

AbstractHerein, nano boron nitride (BN) laminated poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite films are fabricated by using a simple in situ polymerization technique with incorporation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). Structural investigations of PEMA/PVA/Ag@BN nanocomposite thin films are carried out by Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, X‐ray diffraction analysis, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry. The change in morphology of PEMA/PVA matrix due to the reinforcement of BN platelets are identified by electron microscopic studies. The unique tortuous paths are achieved by the dispersion of BN platelets by which gas penetration is restricted with enhancing the barrier properties of the material by 6.5 folds at 5 wt% BN content as compared with neat PEMA/PVA. Acid and alkali resistant along with biodegradability behavior of as‐synthesized nanocomposites are studied. From limiting oxygen index (LOI) results, it is found that the prepared materials are fire retardant in nature owing to effective reinforcement of BN layers. Antibacterial activities of PEMA/PVA/Ag@BN nanocomposite are studied by Xanthomonas citri or axonopodis pv. Citri, Escherichia coli, and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. Oryzae because of Ag NPs reinforcement. The substantial improvements in gas barrier, fire retardant, and antibacterial properties enable the materials for packaging application.

Mechanochemical enhancement in electrode materials via silver-embedded reduced graphene oxide and cobalt oxide nanostructure for supercapacitor applications

This study delves into the intricate domain of mechanochemical synthesis, employing a developed approach for the fabrication of electrode materials. The method involves the incorporation of silver nanoparticles into a two-dimensional matrix of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) combined with cobalt oxide nanostructures, yielding a zero-dimensional cobalt oxide@RGO.Ag nanocomposite. A comprehensive suite of material characterization techniques, including XRD, SEM, EDX, TEM, XPS, and BET, was used to investigate the synthesized materials. Concurrently, extensive electrochemical investigations, incorporating cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanic charge–discharge (GCD), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and retention analyses, are applied to the constructed electrochemical cell. The resulting RGO.Ag@Co3O4 nanocomposite exhibits a remarkable specific capacitance of 371.2 F g−1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s−1. In addition, energy density (Ed) and power density (Pd) values of 21.6 Wh/kg and 997 W/kg, respectively, are achieved at a current density (Cd) of 0.5 A g−1.

A synergistic approach to improving antifouling and antibacterial properties of Ag/DBR/PES membrane

In this study, a novel approach was employed to address the persistent challenge of biofouling in membrane-based separation processes. The method involved enhancing the antifouling and antibacterial properties of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes through the incorporation of dragon's blood resin (DBR) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Four types of membranes with different compositions were prepared and subjected to various characterization including antibacterial test. The introduction of silver coating (M-DB/Fe/Ag) led to an increase in hydrophilicity of the membrane, which changed to higher permeability and very good humic acid rejection (R: 98.32 %) and flux recovery ratio (FRR: 95.87 %). SEM analysis revealed the presence of crystalline particles, indicating a successful Ag coating, followed by a stable negative charge on the membrane surface. Among the prepared membranes, only M-DB/Fe/Ag exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli with an inhibition zone diameter of 9.46 mm. Based on its anti-biofouling properties, the results have significant potential for various applications.

Laser Fragmentation of Green Tea-synthesized Silver Nanoparticles and Their Blood Toxicity: Effect of Laser Wavelength on Particle Diameters

Background: The efficacy of fractionation is significantly impacted by the colloidal particles’ spontaneous absorption of laser beam radiation. The classification of silver nanoparticles during fragmentation processing is regulated through the collection of a combination of laser pulses with wavelengths of 1064 nm and 532 nm. Aims and Objectives: This study presents an investigation of the efficacy of a plant extract in conjunction with the incorporation of supplementary silver nanoparticles, as well as the generation of smaller-sized silver nanoparticles using laser fragmentation.and then measure thier toxity on the blood. Results: Ag nanoparticles were synthesized using pulsed laser fragmentation on green tea AgNPs. The synthesis process involved the utilization of a Q-switch Nd:YAG laser with wavelengths of 1064 nm and 532 nm, with energy ranging from 200 to 1000 mJ. Initially, a silver nano colloid was synthesized through the process of fragmented of the Ag target using the second harmonic generation of 532 nm at various energy levels. The optimal energy within the selected wavelengths was determined in order to facilitate the ultimate comparison. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to determine surface morphology and average particle size, while a spectrophotometer was used to analyses UV light’s spectrum characteristics. The measurements focused on the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) phenomenon. The absorption spectra of silver nanoparticles exhibit distinct and prominent peaks at wavelengths of 405 nm and 415 nm. The mean diameter of the silver nanoparticles was found to be 16 nm and 20 nm, corresponding to wavelengths of 1064 nm and 532 nm, respectively. Conclusion: As a consequence, there is a decrease in the range of particle sizes and a decrease in the mean size to lower magnitudes, resulting in a very stable colloid. This particular methodology has demonstrated considerable efficacy in the production of colloidal suspensions with the intended particle dimensions. Moreover, by the analysis of nanoparticles in human blood, no discernible alterations in the blood constituents were seen, indicating their non-toxic nature.

Impact of Incorporating Silver Nanoparticles (AgNPs) into Collagen-PU-PEG Hydrogels for Superior Antibacterial Efficacy in Severe Wounds

Wound healing is a complex process often hindered by microbial infections, particularly in severe wounds like diabetic ulcers and burns. Collagen-based hydrogels offer potential solutions but lack mechanical support and antibacterial properties. This study explores the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into Collagen-Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) hydrogels crosslinked with polyurethane (PU) for enhanced wound healing. The hydrogels, labeled CPEG-Ag, revealed a dense fibrillar structure resulting from an interconnected matrix; they exhibited superabsorbent swelling capacity (up to 2100%), which increased with AgNPs content from 0 to 5 wt.%, with no significant effects on the crosslinking (%). FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated the formation of a semi-interpenetrating polymeric network, chemically linked by urea bonds and physically by hydrogen bond interactions. In vitro cell viability studies showed non-cytotoxic effects on monocytes and fibroblast cells, with the former displaying the best metabolic activity after 48 hours of evaluation, while the latter exhibited high proliferation during the first 24 hours, indicating the safe use of CPEG-Ag hydrogels. The effective antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria, E. coli, was also studied, demonstrating that even low contents of AgNPs are sufficient for significant bacterial inhibition. These results highlight the potential of CPEG-Ag hydrogels for wound dressings, especially in complex wounds, and pave the way for future tissue regeneration applications.

Antimicrobial potential of linear low-density polyethylene food packaging with Ag nanoparticles in different carriers (Silica and Hydroxyapatite)

Silver nanoparticles incorporation into polymeric packaging aims to prevent microbiological contamination in food products, thus ensuring superior food safety and preservation. In this context, this study aimed to verify the antimicrobial efficacy of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) films incorporated with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) dispersed in silica (SiO2) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) carriers at different concentrations. AgNPs + carriers polymer films were characterized at 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6% concentrations using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission gun-scanning electron microscope (FEG-SEM), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and migration in acidic and non-acidic simulants. Antimicrobial action was investigated on Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, Gram-negative Escherichia coli, and the Penicillium expansum and Fusarium solani fungi with antimicrobial activity by direct contact test and bacterial imaging by scanning electron microscopy. AgNPs addition to the LLDPE matrix did not interfere with the films' chemical and thermal properties and presented no significant migration to the external medium. For antimicrobial action, silver nanoparticles showed, in most concentrations, an inhibition percentage higher than 90% on all microorganisms studied, regardless of the carrier. However, a greater inhibitory action on S. aureus and between carriers was found, making hydroxyapatite more effective. The results indicated that nanostructured films with AgNPs + hydroxyapatite showed more promising antimicrobial action on microorganisms than AgNPs + silica, making hydroxyapatite with silver nanoparticle potentially useful in food packaging, improving safety and maintaining quality.

AgNPs incorporated in Eu(III)-doped hydroxyapatite biomaterial: Spectroscopic, cytotoxicity, and antimicrobial investigation

This study aimed to synthesize and to characterize hydroxyapatite with antimicrobial action. For the synthesis, the precursors calcium nitrate and phosphoric acid were employed; europium(III), 1 % w/w in relation to calcium(II), was used as spectroscopic probe, to investigate structural alterations. Silver nanoparticles, as antimicrobial agents, were added to the resulting material. Formation of the hydroxyapatite phase was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and vibrational spectroscopy in the infrared region. Incorporation of silver nanoparticles in the material was confirmed by electronic absorption spectroscopy in the ultraviolet–visible region, through the absorption band at approximately 400 nm. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the material had adequate morphology to induce bone formation. The excitation, emission, and lifetime measurements of the structural probe, europium(III), showed that the hydroxyapatite unit cell had two symmetry sites. Cytotoxicity evaluation in human cells showed that the material was toxic at concentrations above 1250 μg/mL. At 2000 ppm, the material displayed antimicrobial activity against E. coli, but the maximum evaluated concentration was insufficient to verify activity against S. aureus. Therefore, hydroxyapatite bearing silver nanoparticles is a promising material for application in the medical area.

Theoretical study of silver nanoparticle suspension in electroosmosis flow through a nonuniform divergent channel with compliant walls: A therapeutic application

This study explores the effect of silver nanoparticles on heat transfer and flow behavior within the context of the Ellis fluid model. It specifically considers electroosmotic forces in a nonuniform divergent channel with compliant walls. The analysis involves studying thermal transport in silver-blood nanofluid flow, using MATHEMATICA 13.2 software to obtain exact solutions for velocity and temperature distribution. Findings reveal that certain parameters, such as wall damping and wall elastic properties, increase skin friction, while compliant wall parameters generally reduce flow velocity. Additionally, wall rigidity and tension parameters lead to larger trapped boluses. Notably, a 1% concentration of nanoparticles enhances heat transfer by up to 13.75%, offering control over heat transfer rates. This research introduces a novel perspective by examining compliant wall impacts on heat transfer analysis in the context of electroosmotic flow within the Ellis fluid model, incorporating silver nanoparticles with potential therapeutic applications due to their antibacterial properties.

Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles in <i>Psidium Guajava</i> (Guava) Leaf Extract for Antibacterial Textiles

Textiles, an integral part of everyday clothing, are exposed to varied sources of dirt, leading to bacterial accumulation and cross-contamination. As such, antibacterial textile has become a widespread research interest. One method to create antibacterial textiles is the incorporation of silver nanoparticles (NPs) due to their efficacy in stopping multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria. However, most synthesis techniques in producing silver NPs are complex and expensive. Guava leaf extracts (GE) have a high quantity of metabolites and carbohydrates that can reduce and stabilize silver (Ag) ions. Guava leaves also have an innate antimicrobial property, making them highly compatible with biomedical applications. This study synthesized Ag NPs using Ag nitrate and Ag acetate as Ag precursors and guava leaves extract as reducing agents to create an antimicrobial fabric. The green synthesis successfully produced spherical Ag NPs with mean diameters around 24 nm. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis confirmed the formation of Ag NPs after the reaction. The Ag NPs were deposited on cotton fabrics, which showed significant antibacterial activity even after 5 washings. Generally, the Ag NPs synthesized with larger amounts of guava leaves extract showed larger clearing zones, indicating better antimicrobial activity.
