Computerized hematology: operation of a high-volume hematology laboratory.

Operation of automated hematology testing, on-line to a laboratory-dedicated computer, is described. The computer stores, retrieves and monitors the results of two Model S Sr. Coulter Counters, three Technicon platelet counters, one Electra 600-D, and six leukocyte differential consoles, which are interphased to the computer. All other hematology tests are batch-entered via the keyboard of cathode-ray tubes. The computer generates specimen labels, worksheets, and lists of incomplete tests, monitors all on-line instruments, and performs all the calculations used in the procedures of quality control. Results are available instantaneously on cathod-ray tubes strategically located in patient-related areas throughout the institution. These can be obtained as all of the results for a given day or as cumulative summaries or histogram-type plots of results for a given day.

Exercise Stress Testing in Patients with Chest Pain and Normal Coronary Arteriography: With Review of the Literature

Eighty of 654 patients studied because of chest pain were found to have normal coronary arteriography. Fifty of these completed submaximal treadmill exercise studies. The purpose of this study was to determine whether treadmill electrocardiography could obviate the need for coronary arteriography in the evaluation of patients with undiagnosed chest pain. Of patients studied, 22% had typical angina pectoris, while 78% had atypical chest pain. The resting electrocardiogram was normal in 58% of patients, while 42% showed repolarization abnormalities. Submaximal treadmill testing was normal in 64%, incomplete in 12%, and demonstrated classic ischemic S-T depression in 24%. Our findings of 24% positive studies in patients with normal vessels and 12% incomplete tests suggest that stress electrocardiography may be of limited value in predicting the morphologic state of the coronary arteries in patients with undiagnosed chest pain.

Incomplete Sufficient Statistics and Similar Tests

For a family of exponential densities a method is given, called method, for constructing a class of similar tests in the case that the minimal sufficient statistic is boundedly incomplete. This method also provides a proof of a criterion for bounded incompleteness. Under certain conditions the criterion states that a sufficient statistic for a family of exponential densities is boundedly incomplete if the number of components of the statistic is larger than the number of parameters specifying the distribution. Applications are indicated in the Behrens-Fisher problem, and in the problem of testing the ratio of mean to standard deviation in a normal population. In the latter problem it is shown that the $D$ method generates the whole class of similar tests. Some unsolved problems concerning the existence of an optimal similar test are indicated.

A human blood-group gene intermediate between M and N.

WHILE many blood-group antigens have, subsequently to their discovery, proved to be divisible into a number of sub-types, the M and N antigens have shown little tendency to be subdivided. Aberrant M and N antigens have from time to time been described and attributed to corresponding genes, sometimes characterized as M 2 and N 2, but both of these are extremely rare, with frequencies of the order of 1 in 1,000 in all populations hitherto tested. It was therefore with great surprise that we found examples of an abnormal M antigen and also of an abnormal N in a single English family. The results of our tests on members of this family are shown in Table 1. The sera used have each been tested with consistent results against very many—in some cases thousands—other red cell samples. The classification of the sera into positive and negative reactors with members of the C. family depends solely on tests on members of that family and on incomplete tests on one other unrelated person. All the tests have been carried out at least in duplicate, and in the case of Mrs. C. and K. C. tests have been done on separate blood samples at intervals of several months.

STRATOSPHERE WINDS AND TEMPERATURES FROM ACOUSTICAL PROPAGATION STUDIES

Abstract An investigation of the velocities of compressional waves in the region 30 to 60 km above sea level has been conducted by means of sound-propagation tests. From an analysis of these tests, knowledge of stratosphere winds and temperatures is obtained. A separation of the temperature and wind effects is made possible by variations in the distances and azimuths of the recording sites from the source of the waves. Results of summer tests in the Canal Zone, Bermuda, and Alaska, and of a winter test in Alaska, together with some results of incomplete tests on the east coast of the United States and in New Mexico, are presented. Temperatures were found to be less than those reported in earlier acoustical studies, where winds were assumed to be negligible. The height of the high-temperature layer varied between 50 and 60 km, being greatest in high latitudes in winter. Magnesium Dry Cells

Magnesium dry cells patterned after the conventional Leclanche type “D” size flashlight unit have shown considerable promise in the initial stages of development. The discharge characteristics were in general similar to those of zinc cells. The best cells have contained a magnesium‐aluminum‐zinc alloy anode, and acetylene black cathode, and an alkali or alkaline earth bromide electrolyte, inhibited with ammonium chromate and gelled with a flour‐starch mixture. On the basis of incomplete storage tests at room temperature, the authors believe that eventually successful shelf performance may be achieved.
