Interactive Learning Media Development Articulate Storyline to Improve Science Literacy Capabilities of Junior High School Students

The purpose of the research was to determine the validity, practicality and effectiveness of interactive learning media based on Articulate Storyline on Global Warming Materials to improve the science literacy skills of junior high school students. The type of research uses development research with the model ADDIE. This research was conducted on class VII B students at one of the schools in the city of Probolinggo. This study used data collection techniques and instruments, including validation sheets, observation sheets of learning outcomes, tests, interviews and documentation. The results showed that interactive learning media based on Articulate Storyline is very valid with a percentage of 94.25%, very practical with a percentage of 92%, quite effective with an N-gain of 0.52 and a percentage of student response of 85%. So, interactive learning media based on Articulate Storyline on Global Warming Materials can be very feasible to use in science learning to improve the science literacy skills of junior high school students.

Development of E-module Based on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) To Improve Science Literacy of Junior High School Students

In the 21st century, the development of science and technology is increasing rapidly, especially in the field of education. To prepare for these developments, students must be equipped with skills that support the use of technology and scientific literacy skills. The importance of scientific literacy skills in science learning is motivated by the results of the 2015 PISA test. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of STEM-based e-modules, analyze the effectiveness and profile of scientific literacy skills after using STEM-based e-modules. This research includes Research and Development (R&D) research from Borg & Gall in Sugiyono which has been modified without widespread dissemination. The data analysis technique used in this study includes descriptive data analysis related to the feasibility and profile of students' scientific literacy abilities, while the N-gain test is used to determine the effectiveness of the product. The results showed (1) the STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) e-module that was developed had very feasible criteria regarding aspects of content, presentation, and language (2) the results of the student's scientific literacy assessment showed an increase in the N-gain value with high criteria. (3) the profile of students' scientific literacy abilities which includes the process of science, the context of science, and the content of science have good criteria. Based on this, the use of the developed Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical (STEM)-based e-module is feasible to be used as an alternative learning resource for substance pressure material in science learning.

Effectiveness of Digital Heat Teaching Materials Based on Science, Environment, Technology, Society (SETS) to Improve Science Literacy of Junior High School Students

Nowadays, students need scientific literacy to develop skills to deal with technological developments in the industrial era 4.0. According to several studies, the scientific literacy of Junior High School and Islamic Junior High School students in various regions in Indonesia is in the medium and low categories. Innovative teaching materials appropriate for use in online learning are digital teaching materials. The development of SETS-based digital teaching materials is one of the efforts to improve students' scientific literacy in an online learning. The purpose of this research is to analyze how the validity, readability, and effectiveness of SETS based digital heat teaching materials improve the scientific literacy of Junior High School students. The method employed in this research was the Research and Development (R&D. It took the research sample from seventh-grade students of State Junior High School 3 Juwana by selecting three classes totalling 90 students. The expert validation of teaching materials using expert judgment obtained a score of 93.18% and the proof of media experts received 92.65%, indicating that teaching materials were suitable for learning media. The readability test results to the teaching materials using the gap test showed that the teaching materials were easy to understand. The results of the N-gain test from the pretest and posttest scores obtained a score of 0.706, which indicated that the enhancement of student’s scientific literacy was in the high category. Based on these result, it can be concluded that SETS-based digital teaching materials were effective in improving the scientific literacy of Junior High School students.

Analysis of the Effectiveness of Using Google Classroom and Science Learning During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The rapidly widespread spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia has made the Indonesian government make policies, one of its policies is to carry out distance learning activities. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using Google Classroom in science learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research uses a literature study by reviewing 30 articles or journals published in the 2018-2022 period and comes from Google Scholar and several international journals that come from trusted and accountable websites. The data obtained will then be analyzed using qualitative analysis. The results showed that: (1) The use of Google Classroom is effectively used in science learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, (2) The advantages of using Google Classroom in science learning during the COVID-19 pandemic are that it can improve analytical skills, improve science literacy skills, and grow students' character in science learning, (3) The weakness of using Google Classroom in science learning during the COVID-19 pandemic is that students have difficulty in receiving material, especially those that require calculations such as mathematics, chemistry, and physics

Implementation of STEM E-Module with SDGs Principle to Improve Science Literacy and Environment-friendly Attitudes in Terms of Gender

Scientific literacy plays an important role in developing education in the 21st century. However, the current student’s scientific literacy ability is relatively low. The millennial generation has been named as a generation that has an environment-friendly attitude. In cases that occur in the field, many students still litter and are not friendly to the environment. There are no teaching materials that develop scientific literacy and environment-friendly attitudes in implementing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with the principles of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This research aims to produce a STEM e-module with the principles of SDGs to improve scientific literacy and environment-friendly attitudes of 11th grade students regarding gender that is valid, practical, and effective. This research is development research (R&D) with the Plomp model. The data analysis results show that the STEM e-module with SDGs principle has a good impact on students' scientific literacy skills and environment-friendly attitudes. The developed e-module can also help students practice scientific literacy and improve a better environment-friendly attitude.

Development of e-module based on local wisdom to improve science literacy and reading literacy

This research is motivated by (1) the results of reading literacy and science literacy in PISA, which is still low, and (2) technology and cultural-based learning media have not been developed by private high school chemistry teachers in Semarang. This research aims to develop a feasible E-module based on the local wisdom of spice drinks that can improve reading literacy and learners' science literacy. This research is a research and development with a 3-D model, which includes defining, designing, and developing. This study collects data through observation, questionnaires, and testing. The research instruments used are material expert validation sheets, multimedia expert validation, observation sheets, and instruments about reasoned multiple choice. The study subject was eight students of XI MIPA Kebon Dalem high school. Expert validation results of the material showed 92.85% (very valid). The validation results of media experts showed 85.71% (valid). E-modules are declared effective because there is an increase in the completion of learners' learning outcomes after using E-modules. E-Module based on local wisdom of spice drinks can visualize the factors that affect the rate of reaction material. So, it can be concluded that E-modules based on local wisdom spice drinks developed are worth using to improve learners' reading and science literacy.

Mobile Learning Media Based on Science, Technology, and Society (STS) to Improve Science Literacy for V Grade SD Students

This study aimed to analyze the need, feasibility, and effectiveness of mobile learning media based on Science, Technology, and Society (STS) in improving scientific literacy in fifth grade elementary school students. This study used research and development procedures that refer to the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). The research design used was "Quasi Experimental Nonequivalent Control Group Design" with research subjects at SDN Jombang as the experimental class and SDN Ngombol as the control class, totaling 56 students. The research instruments used were observation sheets, interview sheets, expert validation test sheets, written tests (pretest and posttest), and questionnaire sheets (questionnaire). The results showed that the media-based mobile learning (STS) was needed by students in learning. The feasibility of the media, according to the media expert validator, was declared very valid with an average percentage of validity reaching 95.54%, material expert validator 96.68% with very valid criteria. Meanwhile, the teacher's response regarding the practicality of the media obtained a score of 97.73%, with very practical criteria. Students' responses regarding the practicality of the media obtained a score of 89.74% with very practical criteria. The effectiveness of STS-based mobile learning media according to the calculation of the increase in scientific literacy of students in the experimental class was 42.27%, from an average score of 57.15 to 81.31 in the very good category. Meanwhile, the control class increased by 37.56%, from an average score of 52.80 to 72.63.) in the good category. Keywords: Mobile Learning, STS, Science Literacy.

Development of Science E-Modules on the Functions of Living Organs Topic to Improve Science Literacy for Elementary School Students

This study aims to develop a Science E-Module on the material of the locomotor functions of living things to improve the literacy of elementary school students. In this study, the development of e-modules is guided by the 4-D Thiagarajan development model. The development stage includes defining, designing, developing, and distributing (dessiminate) but at the dessiminate stage it is not done completely. The subjects of this research are students of SDN Simomulyo with details of class 5F as many as 15 people and class 5H as many as 15 people. Study This will be carried out in the odd semester of the 2021/2022 academic year . Results In this study, it was shown that the device developed in this study met the criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The validity of learning tools includes conceptual validity, device readability, and the level of difficulty of the device. The practicality of learning tools includes the implementation of learning and constraints during learning activities. The effectiveness of learning includes an increase in learning outcomes, students, student activities during the learning process, and student responses to learning activities. Based on the fulfillment of validity criteria, practicality criteria, and effectiveness criteria, the learning tools developed are suitable for use in learning.

Development of Science Teaching Materials Based on Ecological Value of Mangrove Ecosystems as a Strategy to Improve Science Literacy of Junior High School Students on the South Coast of East Lombok

Environmental characteristics in coastal areas receive less attention from educational aspects, especially schools integrating with science learning. This research aims to develop mangrove ecological value-based teaching materials as a strategy to improve students' science literacy. The research methods used are observation methods and quasi-experiments. Data analysis uses descriptive statistical analysis using, then the normality and homogeneity test is done with SPSS 17.0. Next, to test the hypothesis using ANOVA One Way. The science literacy ability of learners is measured using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The results showed that mangrove ecological value-based teaching materials are worth using based on expert and teacher validation. The response of learners to the teaching materials developed is very interesting. The homogeneity test showed the significance of students' science literacy abilities obtained Levene test scores > 0.05 which means the data is homogeneous. Based on the hypothesis test H0 was rejected, which means there is a significant increase in student science literacy after using teaching materials based on the ecological value of mangrove ecosystems. The effectiveness of teaching materials is evidenced by the percentage of changes in learners' average pre-test and post-test results. The highest post-test grade post-test score was 80.35%, and the lowest was 79.44%. The conclusion is that mangrove ecological value-based teaching materials are significant to students’ science literacy skills, especially in the coastal areas of East Lombok. Therefore, it is necessary to utilize the location's potential as a source of learning learners to be more attractive.

Development of INoSIT (Integration Nature of Science in Inquiry with Technology) Learning Models to Improve Science Literacy: A Preliminary studies

Has successfully created the INoSIT learning paradigm to increase students' science literacy competency. This design aims to integrate information and communication technology (ICT) with inquiry and nature of science (NoS) models to teach scientific literacy to junior high school students using a multi-representation method. The BSCS 5E model (Involvement of Biological Science Curriculum Study, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation) and the IBL model (Investigation-based learning) have many phases whose implementation requires many processes. So, the INoSIT model is designed to simplify multiple phases or sub-phases. As a result, IBL (inquiry-based learning) is ineffective and inefficient in terms of learning time. It is also challenging to teach scientific literacy of abstract concepts using this method. The study employs a descriptive analysis method in conjunction with a literature review pattern. The INoSIT model with the syntax Eliciting, Hypothesis, Testing Hypothesis, Elucidation, and Reflection was created from the results of the investigation of the weaknesses of the BSCS 5E (Biological Science Curriculum Study Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, and Evaluation) and the IBL (Inquiry-based learning) models. To construct students' knowledge of literacy and the study is anticipated to contribute to creativity, originality, and the development of a proclivity for inquiry and research

SCIENCE LITERACY OF BULGARIAN STUDENTS THROUGH TEACHERS' VIEW

The article presents results and analysis of data from a national survey conducted among teachers, regarding the science literacy of Bulgarian students. The conducted international studies PISSA and TIMSS show that the results of Bulgarian students are below the average for the study. In the field of natural sciences, the most significant decrease was observed, with the average score of Bulgarian students according to PISSA data falling by 22 points in the study conducted in 2018, compared to 2015. The research presented in this article was conducted through an online questionnaire with 15 questions of different types. 105 teachers participated in the study. The results show that teachers use different methods to build science literacy in students. Teachers share that they are partially or not familiar with the results of the PISSA and TIMSS international studies conducted in our country, in the years 2015 and 2019. They need additional methodical help and literature for acquiring further knowledge and skills for improving science literacy among students.

Pengembangan E-Modul Berbasis Outdoor Education untuk Meningkatkan Kemampuan Literasi Sains Siswa Kelas X SMA/MA pada Materi Ekosistem

Starting in the 21st century, the 21st century life skills are empowered which has four principles, each of which contains specific skills that need to be empowered in learning activities, such as critical thinking skills, problem solving, metacognition, communication skills, collaboration, innovation and creation, literacy. information, and various other skills (Zubaidah, 2017). As for interactive learning media that can be developed, namely by utilizing interactive multimedia results from Flip PDF Corporate Edition, in the form of E-Modules. This study aims to increase students' motivation to learn the material in a happy and effective atmosphere to encourage students to think critically and improve students' scientific literacy. This type of research is development research, with the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). However, this research stopped at the Develop stage, while the Implement and Evaluate stages could not be carried out due to time constraints. As for the results of the research that has been carried out, it was found that the Outdoor Education-Based E-Module to Improve Science Literacy Skills in the Ecosystem Class X SMA/MA material met the eligibility requirements of 90.6% from the material aspect with very good criteria, 95.7% feasible from the technical aspect. media with very good criteria and also get a response from teachers with very good criteria with a feasibility level of 96.67%. Based on these data, it can be concluded that the E-Module Learning Media Based on Outdoor Education to Improve Science Literacy Skills in the Ecosystem Material for Class X SMA/MA is very suitable for use in learning.

Absence makes the mind grow stronger - Educating in a pandemic and beyond.

With more than one academic year into the pandemic, it is timely to consider the lessons we learnt, and how they could shape education in the future. Papers from around the globe, reflecting on the directions we took and could take, were published in the FEMS Microbiology Letters virtual Thematic Issue 'Educating in a pandemic and beyond' in October 2021. Its content is reviewed here to facilitate discussions within the professional community. Online platforms and tools, that allowed a rapid emergency response, are covered, as well as enhancing student engagement, complementing and blending in-person activities with online elements for more flexible and accessible learning opportunities, the need for educator training, and improving science literacy overall and microbiology literacy specifically. As we go forward, in order to benefit from blended and flexible learning, we need to select our approaches based on evidence, and mindful of the potential impact on learners and educators. Education did not only continue during the pandemic, but it evolved, leading us into the future.

Student Worksheets with Scientific Literacy Oriented on Hydrolysis Matter by Utilizing Surrounding Materials as an Alternative Practicum in Pandemic Era

Student worksheets are needed to support the learning process that improves student's scientific literacy ability. This study aims to determine the feasibility of student worksheets with science literacy oriented on hydrolysis matter by utilizing surrounding materials as an alternative practicum activity in pandemic era. Research design was used the 4-D model limited to the developing stage with nine students of senior High School as research subjects. The student worksheet's feasibility is viewed from three aspects: validity, practicality, and effectiveness. The student worksheets that developed is feasible if it gets ≥ 61% on the validity and practicality aspects and the N-gain is ≥ 0.3 for the effectiveness aspect. In the validity aspect, the score was 97.20% and 97.00% for the content and construct validity criteria, on very good category. Practicality is viewed from the student response questionnaire results that get an average percentage of 97% and it’s supported by the results of student’s activity observations that get an average percentage of 92.84% on very practical category. The effectiveness aspect in improving science literacy ability indicated by the N-gain score average of 0.88, which is in the high category. Thus the student worksheets developed is feasible for use in the learning process.

The Development of Kinemaster Animation Video as a Media to Improve Science Literacy in Elementary Schools

The research was conducted to develop kinemaster animation video media using the four D development model to improve students' scientific literacy on magnetism. The aim of this study was the Kinemaster animated video media that tried out to 27 six-grade students of SDN Bulusidokare Sidoarjo with Control Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Data collection techniques were validation, observation, tests, and questionnaire. The analysis of research result revealed that the feasibility included: 1) valid, the media and instructional tools that were developed by the researchers were feasible to be experimented; 2) practical, the feasibility of learning went very well with the percentage of 88% to 100%, best practice that was found were students’ enthusiasm increased, the media could be played many times and able to motivate students in doing experiments. The obstacles that happened during the learning process were students’ readiness, insubstantial facilities and infrastructure, and nonoptimal online learning supervision; 3) effective, the science-literacy-test result of experimental-class students passed with N-gain 0,5 to 1,0. Whereas on the control-class, some students faced failure with N-gain 0,17 to 0,57. Data from N-gain results (%) both classes got normal and homogenous distribution, thus independent sample t-test was conducted with significance result 0,00 < 0,05. It can be affirmed that there was effectivity difference in improving science literacy on experimental-class and control-class. Good responses that students gave reached 89% to 100%. The conclusion of this study is Kinemaster animated video media was feasible and effective to be used in improving science literacy on primary school students.

Development of Science Student Worksheets based on the Bio-Ecology of Cuttlefish (Sepia sp.) Cultivation to Improve Science Literacy for Junior High School Students

The development of the science student worksheet based on the bioecology of cuttlefish (Sepia sp.) cultivation is an effort to improve the scientific literacy skills of students at the coastal village school of East Lombok. The purpose of this research is to produce student worksheet that is feasible, practical, and effective in improving students' literacy skills. This research is research and development using Thiagarajan 4D development model which includes design, define, develop, and disseminate stages. The research subjects consisted of 1 SMP/MTs equivalent in East Lombok which were determined using purposive sampling technique. The instruments used include validation sheets, student and teacher response questionnaires, and scientific literacy assessment instruments. The feasibility and practicality data were analyzed using the percentage formula, and the effectiveness data were analyzed using the N-gain analysis. The results showed that 1) student worksheet science based on the bioecology of cuttlefish cultivation (Sepia.sp) was feasible to use with an average score of 73 for the content/material aspect, 73 for the language aspect, and 85 for the appearance aspect, 2) science student worksheet based on the bioecology of cuttlefish cultivation. (Sepia sp.) is practically used with an average percentage of student responses of 81% and teacher responses of 88%, 3) student worksheet science based on the bioecology of cuttlefish cultivation (Sepia.sp) is effective in improving students' scientific literacy skills with an average N value -gain of 0.5 in the medium category. Thus, it can be concluded that the science student worksheet based on the bioecology of cuttlefish (Sepia sp.) cultivation is feasible, practical, and effective to use in science learning as an effort to improve the scientific literacy of junior high school students in coastal village schools in East Lombok.

Planetarium Glass Based on Augmented Reality to Improve Science Literacy Knowledge in Madura Primary Schools

One of the important branches of science on an international scale is scientific literacy. This study aimed to increase the science literacy knowledge of elementary school students on the material of the solar system. This study uses the ADDIE type Research and Development (R&D) method, starting from analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Expert testing of a learning product was carried out by users of the Planetarium Glass application, namely grade VI students of SDN Patengteng 2. The results of this media trial on 22 respondents showed 80% effectiveness. This research instrument uses an online questionnaire to users to determine the effectiveness of this learning media. The final result of the Planetarium Glass application media based on augmented reality is an application format that can be used by utilizing an android-based smartphone. This media provides information about the material of the solar system in the form of 3D virtual animation (3 dimensions) accompanied by an explanation of each object in audio form and is equipped with an application usage module. This media is designed to facilitate students' understanding in understanding the material of the solar system effectively and efficiently because students can see directly the material conveyed via the smartphone they use. Learning using the Planetarium Glass application can be used as an alternative learning media in increasing science literacy knowledge of elementary school students, especially in Madura.

Using Machine Learning to Score Multi-Dimensional Assessments of Chemistry and Physics

In response to the call for promoting three-dimensional science learning (NRC, 2012), researchers argue for developing assessment items that go beyond rote memorization tasks to ones that require deeper understanding and the use of reasoning that can improve science literacy. Such assessment items are usually performance-based constructed responses and need technology involvement to ease the burden of scoring placed on teachers. This study responds to this call by examining the use and accuracy of a machine learning text analysis protocol as an alternative to human scoring of constructed response items. The items we employed represent multiple dimensions of science learning as articulated in the 2012 NRC report. Using a sample of over 26,000 constructed responses taken by 6700 students in chemistry and physics, we trained human raters and compiled a robust training set to develop machine algorithmic models and cross-validate the machine scores. Results show that human raters yielded good (Cohen’s k = .40–.75) to excellent (Cohen’s k > .75) interrater reliability on the assessment items with varied numbers of dimensions. A comparison reveals that the machine scoring algorithms achieved comparable scoring accuracy to human raters on these same items. Results also show that responses with formal vocabulary (e.g., velocity) were likely to yield lower machine-human agreements, which may be associated with the fact that fewer students employed formal phrases compared with the informal alternatives.

Analysis of Student Needs for Context-Based Teaching Materials and Creativity to Improve Science Literacy of Elementary School Students

Teaching materials are one of the important components needed in the learning process. With the appropriate teaching materials, it is hoped that it can help the smooth running of learning activities. Science is a compulsory subject for elementary school students. Science contains all things related to nature. Teaching materials that have been used in learning activities are teaching materials made by the government. The purpose of this study was to determine the needs of students for context-based teaching materials and creativity to improve the scientific literacy of elementary school students. The research subjects were students from several elementary schools in Peukan Bada District, 25 students were used as the source of interview data. Data were collected using interviews and open questionnaires for students. The research data were analyzed descriptively qualitatively. Based on the research data, it can be concluded that it is necessary to develop context-based teaching materials and creativity. Context and creativity-based teaching materials were chosen because they can facilitate students to learn, both with educators and independently. Context-based teaching materials and creativity are teaching materials that are packaged in a comprehensive and schematic manner. This study is also part of a study on the development of teaching materials on the topic of human and animal organism.

Effectiveness of Environmental Based Thematic Learning Tools (EBTLT) in Improving the Science Literacy Skills

Environment-based learning is needed to increase student’s activity through environmental empowerment, which can solve the problems in society as well as to improve students’ scientific literacy. The objective of this research was to analyze the effectiveness of environment-based thematic learning on fourth grade by contextual approach in improving students' scientific literacy skills. This research is a quasi-experimental research by implemented Environmental-Based Thematic Learning Tools (EBTLT). The subject of this research is determined by purposive cluster. They were 25 students as control class, 33 students as the experiment class 1, and 27 students as the experiment class 2. The data analysis was used completeness test, N-Gain analysis, and independent sample t-test. The results showed that the first experimental class and second experimental class students achieve classical completeness > 75%, the value has increased after implemented EBTLT in high category. The average score of science literacy skills and student activity in both experimental class was higher than that of the control class. It can be concluded that students who received EBTLT more effective in improving science literacy skills than students who received basic learning and the activities can create character values for learners
