Impact of job satisfaction on nursing turnover: a mixed method study

To describe job satisfaction and to explore the rationale for the nurse turnover request. A mix-method was carried out. The study was conducted in Hub Hospital in Rome, using a convenience sampling to all nursing staff on duty in the following areas: medical area, surgical and urgency/emergency areas. The sample of 133 nurses was found to have good job satisfaction (60.9%). 21% feel dissatisfied and 18% are uncertain about the degree of satisfaction. Nurses belonging to the urgent-emergency area showed the highest satisfaction (43.7%), while the most dissatisfied were nurses of the surgical area (53.3%). The age group between 45-50 years is useful for immediate turnover, compared to the over 50 who prefer to remain in the reality where it operates. The qualitative analysis revealed 7 macro-areas. Nurses have good job satisfaction, but many of them believe a turnover is necessary. The findings have important implications for nurses by helping to improve work environments, thus reducing turnover intention.

This study aimed at presenting work environment improvement plans for window bakery workers in Jeju by identifying the impact of work environment on worker satisfaction based on the sense of self-achievement of window bakery workers in Jeju. Research results are as follows. First, the work environment of window bakery workers in Jeju were tied into the five elements of personal environment, job environment, facility environment, welfare environment, and convenience environment. Second, upon examining the impact of work environment factors on worker satisfaction, it was found that personal environment, job environment and welfare environment had impact, and this showed that worker satisfaction can be improved by enhancing the personal environment such as interest in issues, cooperative relationship, job assistance, mutual respect, communication, and advice from bosses. Third, upon conducting regression analysis per stage for self-achievement for the influencing relationship of window bakery job environment and worker satisfaction, △R2 change increased from .444->.447 at .003 to .447->.523 at .076, and explanation power increased to 52.3% thus showing that there is an adjusting effect for self-achievement in the job environment and worker satisfaction of cooking workers at window bakeries.

Impact of structured simulation-based and on-job training program on nurses' competency in pediatric peripheral intravenous cannulation: Children's hospital experience

BackgroundPeripheral intravenous cannulation (PIVC) is a frequent invasive, painful procedure in children. Nursing education and competency are of great importance to decrease complications. Objectivesto evaluate the impact of structured simulation-based PIVC training and on-job assessment program on nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and performance. DesignSettings/participants: A prospective, structured, competency improvement training, assessment, feedback, and reassessment conducted on 150 pediatric nurses. They provided nursing care for in-patients at the newly open Children's hospital, Ain Shams University.Methods: PIVC insertion skills and care knowledge, structured simulation-based mannequin training arm venipuncture model and on-job assessment were conducted. In the preparatory phase, 15 nurses were interviewed to develop the assessment tools. Knowledge and attitudes were assessed quantitatively using a validated self-administered questionnaire. Structured simulation-based training, and on-job skill assessment were performed using validated observer checklist. Assessment performed at enrollment (baseline), immediate post training, and reassessment 2-months after the training, using same tools. ResultsKnowledge, performance, and attitudes were significantly improved for the 150 trained nurses. There was improvement in immediate post training assessment than the reassessment after 2-months, compared to baseline for total knowledge score; peripheral cannula insertion score; hand washing before aseptic procedure; skin antisepsis at puncture site; no puncture site palpation after disinfection; apply sterile dressing to puncture site, p = 0.00, respectively.There was improvement in the reassessment after 2-months than post training assessment, compared to baseline for the total attitude score, p = 0.02; peripheral cannula care, p = 0.00; aseptic technique, p = 0.00; wearing protective gloves, p = 0.01; total practice score, p = 0.00.Years of experience, last 6-months training course, practice level, educational level, age, and attitude influence overall performance. ConclusionsStructured simulation-based training and on-job skill assessment are effective for improvement of PIVC insertion and care. Continuous education, feedback, assessment/reassessment, and monitoring should be recommended to retain the gained improvement in attitudes, knowledge, and skills. Changing workplace structure and improve work environment should be studied as factors that might affect learning.

Furnace Linings With Environmentally Friendly Materials

The monolithic lining solution for ferroalloys furnaces has developed from the use of hot ramming pastes with coal tar pitch binder, to cold ramming pastes with less harmful components, or non-harmful components. New materials demand improved installation procedures, but they also improve work environment. A good installation is then easier to obtain and control. Recommended changes in installation of new and health friendly materials are given together with measurements of baked properties. We have shown that coal tar pitch containing materials are robust against different heating rates and temperature plateaus, in the previous Infacon. Heating and curing of environmentally friendly materials, are often much more demanding. Measured temperatures inside a monolithic lining during baking are shown together with simulated temperatures done with COMSOL. Properties of new and old materials together with temperatures, and different heating rates are given. These show which changes that should be done in procedures when old and harmful materials are changed into health friendly materials. Temperature measurements and simulations also show when critical areas of the lining are baked, and metal production can start.

Environment, workload, and nurse burnout in public hospitals in Chile.

To analyze, from an organizational perspective, the problem of nurse burnout in highly complex public hospitals in Chile. Multicenter, observational, cross-sectional study. According to established inclusion criteria, the universe of hospitals and nurses was the object of work. Data collection was carried out through a nurse survey. Work environment was measured with the instrument Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, staffing through the nurses' report on patient load, and burnout with the Maslach Burnout Inventory emotional exhaustion subscale. Thirty-four hospitals (92%) and 1,395 nurses (75.3%) participated in the study. The prevalence of burnout was 34.7%, being higher in Santiago than in other regions of the country (p = 0.001). The logistic regression analyses showed a significant association between work environment and burnout (OR 0.57, 95% CI 0.41-0.79, p = 0.001). No association was established between staffing, skill mix and burnout. A high percentage of nurses in Chile has burnout, which is significantly associated with the quality of the environment. The implementation of organizational strategies to improve work environments could reduce burnout and improve the quality of care.

This study aims to investigate the influence of motivation, labor discipline, and work environment toward employee performance at LPK Monarch Dalung-Bali. The sampling technique used in this study is census technique taken from all employees at LPK Monarch Dalung-Bali as many as 38 people. The analysis technique used in this study is Multiple Linear Regression with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) versi 15.0 for windows. The results showed that 1) motivation has a positive and significant effect on employee performance at LPK Monarch Dalung-Bali. 2) Labor discipline has a positive and significant effect on employee performance at LPK Monarch Dalung-Bali. 3) Work environment has a positive and significant effect on employee performance at LPK Monarch DalungBali. The advices in this study indicate that the company could be defended and improved the motivation, labor discipline, and work environment in increasing employee performance. The improvement of employee motivation had better do by giving the salary based on the competence, workload, and achievement. The improvement of labor discipline should be done by increasing the understanding of employee on the regulation in company. Furthermore, the improvement of work environment could be done by adding ventilations and plants around the room to get a fluent air circulation and make the employee more comfortable to work.

Nation-Wide Dissemination of a Digital Checklist to Improve Work Environment in the Eldercare Sector in Denmark.

In this study, we evaluated the dissemination of a digital checklist for improving implementation of work environment initiatives in the Danish eldercare sector. We evaluated the impact of the checklist using the RE-AIM framework. Initiated in 2016, researchers and relevant stakeholders were responsible for disseminating the checklist to all workplaces in the eldercare sector in Denmark through a national campaign. The checklist guided the user to define an action plan to implement, and the checklist covered 11 implementation concept points that should be addressed to reach full implementation of the action in focus. One year after the launch of the campaign almost all municipalities in Denmark had visited the website hosting the checklist (96%), 17% of individual workers within the eldercare responding to a union survey was reached, 4% (n = 199) of all eligible eldercare workplaces in Denmark and 8% of all nursing homes had adopted the checklist. Of the workplaces that used the checklist, 46% typed an action in the checklist. There were 13% of the first time users that used the checklist twice and 29% of the actions were revised (maintenance) after working with the implementation. Finally, the workplaces that had used the checklist showed a higher prioritization of work environment compared to workplaces not using the checklist both at baseline and at follow up. In conclusion, this study employing various strategies, including a 1-year national campaign to disseminate a checklist shows potential to impact implementation of work environment initiatives in the Danish eldercare sector. While dissemination is satisfactory and likely to increase further with time, more efforts is needed to ensure maintenance.

Job Characteristics Affecting Japanese Surgeons’ Satisfaction Levels

BackgroundThe number of medical graduates choosing surgical careers has been declining rapidly in Japan, likely because of surgeons' notoriously stressful working environments and inadequate compensation. We hypothesized that surgeons, in comparison to those in other specialties, have distinct perceptions of their job. To better understand the reasons for the decline in the number of surgeons, we conducted an email-based survey to characterize surgeons' and physicians’ job perceptions. Materials and methodsThe study population, recruited via emailed invitations, completed a questionnaire primarily modeled after the Hackman and Oldham multidimensional tool. The survey contained seven dimensions: task significance, dealing with others, feedback from the job, autonomy, skill variety, task identity, and ethics. The response rate was 29.4%. Results were compared across specialty groups (surgery, internal medicine, and others) and—among surgeons—by hospital setting (university hospitals versus community hospitals). ResultsResponses from 415 Japanese physicians were included in this study. The mean scores for ethics, task significance, and dealing with others, and feedback from the job were significantly higher in the surgery group than in the internal medicine and other specialty groups (P < 0.05). In contrast, the mean score for autonomy was lower in the surgery group than in the other groups, and the autonomy score was significantly lower in the university hospital surgery group than in the community hospital surgery group (P < 0.05). ConclusionsThere are clear differences in job perception between surgeons and other physicians, particularly in regard to ethics, task significance, dealing with others, and feedback from the job. Improvement of surgeons' working environments is an imminent need to avoid surgeons’ burnout and mitigate the decline in the number of new surgical trainees in Japan.

Factors Associated with Middle Managers’ Work Motivation: Evidence from SMEs in Vietnam

This study presents an exploratory investigation of SMEs in Vietnam to understand the impact of personal-level factors on middle managers' work motivation and the moderating role of work environment. A survey of 450 middle managers (MMs) in 150 Hanoi's SMEs was conducted. The findings of this research showed a significant positive impact of Achievement (ACHV), Recognition (RECOG), and Responsibility (RESP) on work motivation of MMs under the investigation. Furthermore, the result indicated that the work environment affects the relationship between personal-level factors and work motivation of participants. Consequently, both work environment improvement and strategies related to personal-level factors need to be taken into consideration. Especially, Recognition and transparency in Responsibility are appreciated in organizations with a low level of work environment satisfaction. However, there were no indications that Participation (PAR) and Communication (CMM) have a considerable impact on work motivation of respondents, being neither low level nor high level of work environment satisfaction. Based on the findings, recommendations are suggested for Vietnam's SMEs to improve work motivation of MMs, by (i) developing standards with emphasis on their achievement, (ii) paying attention to organizational culture focusing on the responsibility of this managerial level, and (iii) building an adequate incentive system, especially non-financial incentives.

A two-year program to promote participatory workplace environmental improvements at small enterprises with fewer than ten employees

This study aimed to determine the influence of participatory workplace environmental improvement program on reducing job stress and workers' psychological distress at small enterprises (i.e., less than 10 employees). Furthermore, this study aimed to clarify important factors for success of this program as well. The model program was tested in a small enterprise with eight employees between October 2014 and January 2017. Moreover, five employees participated in the annual work environment improvement workshops for two consecutive years. During both years, the New Brief Job Stress Questionnaire (80-item version) was used to measure work-related stress before (baseline) and after (post-three months and post-12 months) the workshops. To assess the extent of an intervention effect, the questionnaire data were analyzed using the Friedman test and the multiple comparison test annually. In addition, continuous data were analyzed during the two years. The statistical significance of the differences across time was determined at the p < .10 cutoff value because the number of participants was small. The effect size was also calculated. The participants were interviewed regularly. For both years, the employees implemented action plans within one month of completing the workshops. In the first year, the data for the Friedman test indicated a significant change in role conflict, job resources (workgroup-level), respect for individuals, fair personnel evaluations, work-self balance (positive), workplace social capital, and job satisfaction. In the multiple comparison test, significant changes manifested in role conflict and workplace social capital. In the second year, significant changes were found regarding role conflict and fair personnel evaluations for the Friedman test, demonstrating significant changes in role conflict in the multiple comparison test. As per the two-year survey results, the Friedman test indicated significant changes in role conflict, respect for individuals, and fair personnel evaluations, while the multiple comparison test demonstrated no significant changes. Over time, favorable changes were found regarding role conflict in the first year; however, undesirable changes were found regarding the other statistically significant items. The interviews revealed both positive and negative opinions. This study found the effects of the participatory workplace environment improvement program to be limited. Thus, the program should be improved to reduce its adverse effects as well as the participants' negative opinions.

Ping pong for health: the meaning of space in a sport based health intervention at the workplace

ABSTRACT Purpose: This is a study on a sport-based intervention, with a focus on physical activity, social relations, and learning, to promote health and well-being in the workplace lived space. Lived space is situated and associated with social and cultural conventions which affect the quality of the perceived space at work. The aim of the paper is to elucidate the participant’s experiences of the intervention and how health and well-being were affected. Methods: The intervention was conducted with employees from the warehouse of a company within the retail sector. The design consisted of one initial workshop as a baseline, a sport-based intervention, three group interviews, and a final workshop. A hermeneutic phenomenological analysis focused on experiences of the intervention and the meaning of the workplace as the lived space. Results: Three themes emerged in the analysis; Expressing positive individual effects, Expressing improved work environment and The meaning of the workplace as lived space. The themes are discussed in relation to three basic health foci: physical activity, social relations and learning. Conclusion: The workplace as a lived space offers a valuable opportunity for sport-based interventions that improve health and well-being through physical activity, social relations, and learning.

Impact of nurse burnout on organizational and position turnover

BackgroundThe National Academies of Medicine describes clinician burnout as a serious threat to organizational health, including employee turnover. PurposeTo determine the relationship between resilience, burnout, and organizational and position turnover. MethodsWe surveyed direct care nurses in three hospitals 1 year apart between 2018 and 2019; 1,688 nurses completed 3,135 surveys included in analysis. FindingsFifty-four percent of nurses in our sample suffer from moderate burnout, with emotional exhaustion scores increasing by 10% and cynicism scores increasing 19% after 1 year. The impact of burnout on organizational turnover was significant, with a 12% increase in a nurse leaving for each unit increase on the emotional exhaustion scale, though it was not a factor in position turnover. DiscussionThese findings contribute to the growing body of evidence of nurse burnout and support policies and programs for annual measurement of burnout, increased employee wellbeing support, and improved work environments.

Burnout in general surgery residents. Survey from the Spanish Association of Surgeons

IntroductionPhysicians, especially surgeons, are significatively affected by burnout. Duty-hour violation, as well as discrimination, abuse and sexual harassment may contribute to burnout. A study about this topic has been published in residents from United States, demonstrating a high incidence of burnout. Our objective is to know which is the situation in Spain and to compare it with United States. MethodsCross-sectional observational study carried out in January-February 2020, based on the responses to a validated survey administered to General Surgery residents in Spain. ResultsThere are 931 General Surgery Residents. 739 have entered in the survey and 452 (61.2%) eventually responded to it. In any occasion during the training period, 55.1% reported discrimination based on their gender, 8.8% reported racial discrimination, 73.9% reported verbal/psychological abuse, 7.1% reported physical abuse and 16.4% reported sexual harassment. Attending surgeons are the most frequent source of sexual harassment and physical and verbal abuse, whereas patients are the most frequent cause of gender discrimination. Burnout symptoms were reported by 47.6% of residents and 4.6% reported suicidal thoughts. 98% of residents reported duty-hour violations and 47% of them do not have the day off after to be on call. Both of these issues are burnout predictive factors. ConclusionsMistreatment (discrimination, abuse and harassment) occurs among General Surgery residents during their training period in our country. Every kind of mistreatment is more frequent in Spain than in the United States, with the exception of racial discrimination. It is associated with exceeding weekly duty-hour. It is necessary to know these problems and to avoid them in order to improve work environment of General Surgery training period.

The effect of verbal violence experienced by dental hygienists on job stress and turnover intention and burn-out

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to develop a coping plan for verbal abuse in dental hygienists, to improve work environment and performance ability and to offer basic data for reducing turnover rate through surveying verbal abuse degree that dental hygienists experience, and through grasping its effect on job stress, turnover intention and burnout. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted from November 18, 2019 to December 6, 2019 targeting 215 dental hygienists who are working at dental hospitals and clinics where are located in Gyeongnam and Busan Metropolitan City. The results are as follows. Results: The verbal abuse in dental hygienists was indicated to be in order of the verbal abuse from patients with 2.00±0.78, the verbal abuse from doctors with 1.91±0.78, and the verbal abuse from Yokefellow with 1.88±0.79. A type of verbal abuse was shown to be the largest in ‘I ve ever been spoken informally. As a result of having analyzed general characteristics, a dentist s verbal abuse was significant in workplace and turnover experience And the verbal abuse was significant in work placeas for turnover intention and in service career as for job stress and burnout. All in the verbal abuse from dentists, the verbal abuse from Yokefellow and the verbal abuse from patients showed statistically significant positive correlation with job stress, turnover intention and burnout. Accordingly, the dental hygienists appeared to have higher job stress, turnover intention and burnout in the more experiences of verbal abuse from patients. Conclusions: To help dental hygienists effectively cope with verbal violence, development of situational manuals and training of programs for prevention and arbitration of verbal violence is necessary.

Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) and Cytotoxicity of Hair Dyes

In recent years, the beauty industry has undergone dramatic changes in response to demands for safe and sustainable products. In particular, many consumers have become more interested in the safety and origin of the ingredients in their beauty products. This has led to the improvement of laws and regulations concerned with the development of eco-friendly beauty products. Artificial components and chemicals in beauty products can cause direct and indirect harm to the users. This is because most products contain specific volatile ingredients that can be easily ingested by the human body. Until now, there has been little research into the harmfulness of these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in workplaces, such as beauty salons. In this dissertation, a VOCs analysis and a cytotoxicity evaluation were conducted simultaneously to examine and verify the safety of hair dyes. The VOC evaluation was conducted using the ‘MS 300 55’ method, a vehicle interior air quality testing program. The cytotoxicity evaluation was also performed using the ‘TTT assay’ method. Based on the above results, this study targets the establishment of emission standards of VOCs in aesthetic products and provide basic data needed to develop eco-friendly products and improve work environments for the purposes of safety and sustainability.

Socio-Economic Factors and Women Participation in Mining: a Case of Rwanda Mining

This report presents a study conducted in Rwanda Mining Association to assess Socio-Economic Factors and Women Participation in Rwandan Mining Projects. Specific objectives for the study were: To investigate the effect of socio-cultural and economic factors on women participation in mining projects; Determine the influence of company management procedures on women participation in mining project; and to examine the impact of mine sites working and living conditions on women participation in mining projects. Using purposive and simple random sampling technique, the target population of 835 workers (676 men and 159 women) was selected from 30 mining companies. The sample size of 270 respondents including 51 women and 219 men was also selected. Collected data was analysed through SPSS software using chi-square and regression models. It was found that socio-cultural beliefs and Socio-economic factors have negative relationship with women participation in mining. Company management procedures (recruitment, workers’ promotion, and skills development and job allocation procedures) applied in human resources management were also found to have negative effect on women participation in mining. The nature of mining work places, working and living conditions in terms of occupational Safety and Health (OSH) of workers do not facilitate women integration in mining. Female workers face particular challenges such as being fired once they get pregnant and lack of work contracts. If mining is to contribute for poverty reduction by eliminating inequality in accessing economic benefits in rural areas between men and women, all these factors should be addressed in a manner favourable to women. More sensitizations are recommended for community to promote good understanding on equal sharing of economic resources between men and women. Improved work environment is needed for both men and women. As in other sector of activity, women’s rights associated with employment should be respected as well. Association between Sleep Problems and Sedentary Behaviors during Work among Korean Workers.

Background:We aimed to identify the association between sleep problems and sedentary behaviors during work among Korean workers.Methods:We employed a cross-sectional survey, and analyzed data from the 5th Korean Working Conditions Survey, conducted in 2017. The participants were 50,205 workers aged 15 years and above. The data were analyzed using Pearson’s correlation, chi-square distribution, and logistic regression.Results:Sleep problems occurred more frequently among female participants with higher ages; those with low educational levels; skilled agricultural, forestry, and fishery workers; elementary workers; and service and sales workers. With general characteristics as control variables, it was found that the odds of sleep problems were 5.547 times higher if the duration of sedentary behavior was longer.Conclusion:It is important to improving work environment and provide education on various physical activities for workers with a long duration of sedentary behaviors to reduce sleep problems among them.

Improving Early Care and Education Professionals’ Teaching Self-Efficacy and Well-Being: A Mixed Methods Exploratory Study

ABSTRACT Research Findings: Early care and education (ECE) professionals experience a myriad of challenges that adversely impact their well-being as well as their ability to have the greatest teaching impact on the children they serve. There is general agreement that Professional Development (PD) can improve teaching practices. The current study examined the impact of a PD experience that included both adaptive work (e.g., addressing educators’ existing strengths, challenges, belief systems, stress levels, and self-care) and technical training (e.g., strategies for addressing children’s challenging behavior). This PD experience was implemented with 62 ECE professionals living on the islands of Hawai’i over 10 weeks and consisted of in-person sessions, web-based sessions, and a community of practice. Findings from this study suggest high ratings of effectiveness of the PD experience and positive improvements in ECE professionals’ ratings of their teaching self-efficacy and well-being. Practice or Policy: The results from this study suggest that PD incorporating adaptive work can improve teaching self-efficacy and could be implemented as part of every PD session. PD that incorporates an emphasis on teachers’ well-being and actively strives to promote their well-being may be as important to ECE professionals as some other strategies targeted to improve work environments and classroom quality.
