The perception of mayors of the Douro Demarcated Region about tourism development

This research aims to understand how local authorities consider tourism a sustainable development vector and identify critical areas of improvement. This work addresses the perception of the mayors of municipal chambers in the Demarcated Douro Region (DDR; Portugal) regarding issues related to the region’s tourist sector, precisely challenges and opportunities associated with promoting sustainable development in regional tourism. The surveys were conducted with mayors throughout the DDR, employing a structured questionnaire to collect data on their perspectives. The analysis revealed that mayors consider tourism, especially wine tourism, gastronomy, and promoting natural and cultural heritage, significant drivers for the region’s devel- opment. However, challenges such as poor accessibility, lack of private investment, and demographic issues have also been identified. The study highlights a strong disposition among municipalities to cooperate in the seasonality approach of tourism and promote the DDR as a comprehensive and diverse tourist destination. The findings emphasise the need for improvements in transport infrastructure, innova- tion support, entrepreneurship, and the importance of cultural and sporting events for the attraction of tourists throughout the year. This paper provides valuable information on the perspectives of local DDRs on tourism by offering planning guidance and promot- ing more sustainable and inclusive tourist practices.

Determinants of the Utilization of Skilled Birth Attendance among Women in Ogun East Senatorial District, Nigeria: A Rural-Urban Comparison

Background: Every woman needs access to skilled care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the following weeks. Recent estimates show that the proportion of deliveries attended by a skilled attendant in many African countries remains low. Objective: To identify the determinants of utilising skilled birth attendance (SBA) among women in Ogun East Senatorial District of Nigeria. Methods: A comparative, cross-sectional study was conducted among 375 women in each rural and urban community selected using multistage sampling. A pretested interviewer-administered, structured questionnaire was used for data collection. Results: A higher proportion of urban respondents (67.7%) utilised SBA compared to rural respondents (53.6%), p<0.001. The determinants of utilisation of SBA services included proximity and means of transportation to the facility (p<0.001). On multivariate analysis, health problems in the preceding pregnancy (AOR = 8.183, 95% CI = 2.621-25.545) and spousal support (AOR = 6.909, 95% CI = 2.013-23.705) remained significant determinants of utilisation of SBA in the rural area but not in the urban area. Conclusion: Rural dwellers face significant barriers in accessing the services of skilled birth attendance. Improving transportation infrastructure, engaging spouses in maternal health education and managing health problems during pregnancy could enhance SBA utilisation and reduce rural-urban disparities.

Wakatobi Development Priorities as A Sustainable Tourism Destination Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process Method

Wakatobi is one of the tourist destinations renowned for its underwater beauty, holding great potential to be developed as a sustainable tourism destination. This research aims to determine the priorities for sustainable tourism development in Wakatobi using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The AHP method is employed to identify and prioritize various criteria and sub-criteria contributing to sustainable tourism development. Based on the research findings, infrastructure and facilities were found to be the highest priorities, with a focus on improving transportation infrastructure and public facilities. These findings indicate that the development of transportation infrastructure and public facilities is crucial to support the sustainability of tourism in Wakatobi.

Determinants of Petroleum Products Export from Niger

This paper aims to define the main determinants of petroleum products export from Niger in the light of the specificity of the country, in order to make recommendations to policy-makers for improving oil revenues. To carry out this work, we started by interviewing stakeholders in the Niger trade using an interview guide. This was followed by a literature review and exploration of previous empirical work on various studies devoted to the determinants of exports. Finally, statistical data from a number of sources were processed. The main results, derived from the estimation of the OLS gravity model, show that the factors that strongly influence Niger's exports are transport distance and its economic weight when put in relation to that of trading partners. The main recommendations towards policy-makers arising from our research are: the creation of a new refinery close to Burkina Faso and Mali, increased oil production and the ongoing improvement of road transport infrastructure.

Impacts of improved transport on regional market access

This article presents a pedagogic review and explanation of a core idea in location theory. Central to the analysis is the von Thünen model, a cornerstone of agricultural land use theory. The model is adapted to non‐uniform transport surfaces, enabling an exploration of how improved transport corridors, such as roads and canals, alter economic landscapes. The article explores the influence of enhanced transport corridors within agricultural growing regions and provides a conceptual framework for understanding the impacts of improved transport infrastructure. By examining incremental changes of varying effectiveness, we shed light on the multifaceted effects of these corridors. Using a spatial‐price equilibrium model, findings reveal and quantify how these improvements contribute to increased supply, price moderation, and cost reduction. Networks that provide full connectivity with large reductions in transport cost have the greatest effect, as might be expected, but there are subtle spatial zones displaying differential impacts.

The Impact of Transportation on The Avocado Market in Tanzania

Avocado (Persea americana) is grown in many nations throughout Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. The climate of Tanzania offers a perfect habitat for growing avocados. This paper investigates how transportation affects the Tanzanian avocado industry. Data were gathered from 505 farmers and 37 categories/groups using a cross-sectional design. Data analysis was done using SPSS where descriptive statistics and the chi-square test. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test at p < 0.05 was also done. According to the results, local avocado output is dominated by men (79% male vs. 21% female). The result of the binary logit model revealed that the participation of avocado producers in a high-value market was influenced by age, educational status, the number of avocados sold, the price of avocado, and market information. With sorting (12%), grading (7%), and packaging (9%), quality during production was judged most important (25%), followed by harvesting (16%), storage (16%), and transportation (15%) with less relevance were factors impacting quality. Improving the avocado market for growers depends on addressing these problems at the national, regional, and district levels. Hence, transportation has a big influence on the avocado industry since smallholder growers have great difficulties influencing market access and produce quality. Improvement of transport infrastructure and support systems at the national, regional, and district levels will help to boost the avocado market.

Analysis of the Potential and Development of Natural Tourist Attractions at Telaga Cinta, Suli Village, Salahutu District, Central Maluku Regency

This study aims to examine the tourism potential of the Telaga Cinta area in Suli Village and to identify strategies for developing the attraction's potential using a SWOT analysis. Telaga Cinta in Suli Village has several strengths, such as stunning natural lake scenery, attractive facilities, cleanliness and security, and basic infrastructure such as electricity and telephone networks for internet access. Additionally, the local community's hospitality is a distinctive attraction for tourists. However, some areas for improvement were addressed, including the poor condition of the road leading to the tourist site with several potholes and the lack of facilities for more food and beverage kiosks. Nevertheless, there are significant opportunities for the development of Telaga Cinta, such as job creation, increasing local community income, and the widespread availability of tourist information on the internet and social media. Regarding threats, Telaga Cinta faces several challenges, including more cooperation between the government and the community in developing the tourist site, competition from other tourist attractions, and improving facilities and services at competing tourist sites. SWOT analysis found that the intersection point lies, indicating the need to adopt a growth-oriented strategy focusing on improving transportation infrastructure and enhancing facilities according to visitor needs. Therefore, development efforts should focus on repairing the road to the location, providing the lacking facilities, and improving cooperation between the government and the local community.

Quantifying the vulnerability of road networks to flood-induced closures using traffic simulation

Disruptions in road networks can significantly impact traffic flow, necessitating the identification and mitigation of vulnerable components. This study presents a methodology to assess the vulnerability and robustness of road networks, addressing the research gap in comprehensive approaches that effectively evaluate both controlled intersections and uncontrolled/free-flow highway segments. The proposed framework employs traffic simulation tools to model road closures within designated study areas, focusing on networks in Qatar. Performance measures such as average control delay and volume to capacity ratios are utilized to calculate vulnerability indices for network components. The two-pronged approach quantifies the impact of simulated closures at both the component and network levels, revealing critical intersections and road segments that markedly affect network performance during disruptions. The findings contribute to the field by providing transportation engineers with an effective quantitative tool to detect vulnerabilities in their road network, guiding design plans and actions to mitigate the potential harmful impacts of disruptive events on transportation infrastructure. The methodology's scalability ensures its applicability to various operational contexts, offering significant insights for transportation planning and infrastructure resilience. By establishing a comprehensive vulnerability analysis framework, this study enhances the understanding and management of road network vulnerabilities in complex urban environments. Further research on integrating dynamic traffic assignment and real-time data is recommended to further enhance the predictive accuracy and applicability of the proposed framework, ultimately improving transportation infrastructure resilience.

Mitigation of urban road collapses based on machine learning via integrating susceptibility assessment and geophysical detection validation

Road collapse is a frequent and damaging disaster in cities. The complexity and uncertainty inherent in urban environments pose significant challenges to mitigating road collapses. This paper presents a novel framework integrating machine learning-based susceptibility assessment and geophysical detection validation for urban road collapse risk reduction. Three oversampling techniques, random oversampling, synthetic minority oversampling technique for nominal and continuous features (SMOTENC), and adaptive synthetic sampling (ADASYN), are first utilized to implement data augmentation on urban road collapse accident samples. Subsequently, three machine learning models, support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), are developed to evaluate road collapse susceptibility by extracting collapse-inducing patterns from historical accident data. Particularly, on-site geophysical hazard detection is conducted to validate the assessment results. The results demonstrate that XGBoost with SMOTENC achieves satisfactory performance in identifying road collapses with accuracy (0.9608) and AUC (0.9796). The spatial distribution of road collapse susceptibility in Shanghai central area follows a high-moderate-low pattern from northwest to southeast. The geophysical detection reveals a correlation between higher road collapse susceptibility and increased severity of underground diseases, validating the generalization capacity of XGBoost in actual operational environments. Additionally, the structural problems of underground pipelines are identified as the most influential factors for urban road collapse. This research offers valuable insights for urban road collapse mitigation and resilience improvement of transportation infrastructure.

Polycentric spatial Structure, digital economy and urban green sustainable development

The urban spatial structure profoundly influences green sustainable development, while digital technology is instrumental in fostering the advancement of eco-friendly smart cities. This study explores whether optimizing urban spatial layout can utilize the transformative potential of the digital economy (DE) to achieve goals such as urban low-carbon construction, achieving "carbon neutrality" and promoting sustainable development. We examine the influence of polycentric spatial structure and the digital economy on urban carbon emissions (UCE) from a spatial perspective. We found that a polycentric spatial structure reduced local and neighboring carbon emissions significantly, and the expansion of the DE further amplifies this effect. Supported by digital technologies, three main pathways effectively reduce UCE: improving transportation infrastructure, facilitating industrial transformation and upgrading, and promoting market integration. Further analysis revealed that the effectiveness of these beneficial impacts is influenced by regional heterogeneity and urban scale. Moreover, cities with advanced green technologies and those situated within urban agglomerations are better positioned to leverage this dividend effect to foster green, low-carbon, and sustainable urban development. Lastly, based on our research findings, we provide policy recommendations aimed at promoting green and sustainable urban development.

Comprehensive strategies for effective fecal sludge management in Humanitarian Settings: A case study of Cox’s Bazar Rohingya Response

The influx of Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) into Bangladesh has necessitated the development of robust Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) strategies in Cox’s Bazar to ensure safe and sustainable sanitation solutions. Effective fecal sludge management (FSM) is crucial in humanitarian settings for public health, environmental protection, and dignity. This study investigates comprehensive FSM strategies in Cox’s Bazar Rohingya refugee camps, one of the largest and most complex humanitarian crises. Using a mixed-methods approach, it combines quantitative data from surveys and field observations with qualitative insights from interviews and document analysis to examine the FSM value chain, including sludge production, containment, collection/emptying, transport, treatment, and disposal/reuse. Findings show high sludge production rates require frequent desludging, with challenges in containment due to structural weaknesses and privacy concerns. Collection and emptying face logistical and health issues, while transport is hindered by difficult terrain and limited vehicle availability. Treatment facilities are often inadequate, leading to operational challenges and environmental risks. Despite these issues, disposal and reuse practices in agriculture show promise but need safety and community acceptance improvements. The study recommends increasing desludging capacity, enhancing containment designs, improving transport infrastructure, expanding treatment facilities, and promoting safe disposal and reuse practices. Emphasizing community engagement, technological innovations, and coordinated efforts among stakeholders is crucial for sustainable FSM systems. Future research should focus on innovative technologies, long-term sustainability, and scalability of FSM strategies across contexts. This research provides valuable insights and practical recommendations for improving sanitation in similar emergency contexts worldwide.

Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS): A Regional Integration Analysis

In 1975, the 15 countries that comprise the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) formalized a trade agreement to integrate their economies to make it easier for them to trade with each other and thus promote economic growth and development. Since then, the evidence suggests that intra-regional trade has not changed much. In this paper, we examine the factors hindering trade using data from 2000, 2010, and 2020 and a modified version of the gravity equation. The results of our study suggest that economic factors are primarily responsible for intra-ECOWAS trade and that policies designed to improve transportation infrastructure and reduce administrative barriers could significantly improve intra-ECOWAS trade.

Impacts of Regional Integration and Market Liberalization on Bilateral Trade Balances of Selected East African Countries: Potential Implications of the African Continental Free Trade Area

This study examined the effect of free trade on intra-African bilateral trade balances for Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Tanzania to assess the potential implications of the African Continental Free Trade area. The four countries have experienced persistent trade deficits. Whether free trade within Africa can improve the national trade balances, and the drivers of bilateral trade balances are important questions for policy and strategic programmes for the countries to make the most gains from free trade area. The econometric model estimated for each country is an extension of the standard Keynesian model of trade balance to include determinants of bilateral trade flows from the gravity model. Quantitative analysis using panel regression was augmented with qualitative data from interviews with trade policy experts and trade officials from various African countries and focus group discussions with small-scale cross-border traders at the Busia and Namanga border posts in East Africa. Findings show that complete tariff elimination on intra–African trade may not impact the bilateral trade balances of Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania but could improve bilateral trade balances for Uganda by 6 percent. Within the free trade areas, Uganda’s bilateral trade balances were higher within the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa but lower within the East African Community, than outside these areas. Kenya’s trade balances were lower in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, than otherwise. On the contrary, no significant difference in trade balances is established for the membership of Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania in the East African Community; Rwanda in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa; and Tanzania in the Southern African Development Community, when compared to trade balances with non-members. The importance of macroeconomic factors is demonstrated by the increase in bilateral trade balances with higher relative price levels of trade partners; the reduction with increase in relative production and expenditure capacities of trade partners; and improvements following a depreciation of home currency for Tanzania and Uganda, yet a worsening of trade balances in Kenya. A lack of harmony in documents required for cross-border movements within the free trade areas is reported as counterproductive. All African countries should therefore fully implement protocols and cooperate in the harmonization of trade procedures for the free movement of people and goods across borders. Country policies and trade programmes should pursue increased productivity in the leading intra-African export sectors and diversify exports via foreign direct investment in strategic sectors to substitute imports from outside Africa; reduce costs of production; increase the quality of products; and improve transport infrastructure.

Understanding the Tourist Gaze in John Urry's Sociological Theory

Tourism as a mass phenomenon began to be actively studied by sociologists in the second half of the 20th century. A special place among the sociological approaches to this phenomenon of the specified historical period is occupied by the concept of tourism by British researcher John Urry, one of the most prominent representatives of modern sociological theory. The scientist considers tourism in the context of social and economic changes taking place in Western societies after the end of World War II: significant economic growth, very high rates of urbanization, increased consumption, improved transport infrastructure, transformation of social attitudes. The main work, which outlines the key provisions of the concept of the tourist gaze, is the publication "The Tourist Gaze". Subsequently, this book has been updated twice, taking into account new social trends, phenomena and processes. The author explores the concept of tourism by J. Urri using general scientific methods of cognition, as well as genetic, comparative historical and other methods that reveal the specifics of the scientist's approach. The author's special contribution to the research of the topic lies in the fact that the theoretical and methodological foundations of John Urry's concept of tourism were identified, its specificity and the evolution of the scientist's views were demonstrated. The article examines the key elements of this theory, reveals its heuristic potential, and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the British sociologist's research approach. Despite the criticism presented, the approach developed by John Urry, his conceptual apparatus and analytical tools indicate the high importance of his works for modern sociological theory. The concept of the tourist view remains relevant, which is confirmed, in particular, by the presence of followers who continue to make a significant contribution to the expansion and deepening of the theoretical and empirical analysis of tourism, based on the ideas proposed by Urri.

Optimization of Blasting Parameters Considering Both Vibration Reduction and Profile Control: A Case Study in a Mountain Hard Rock Tunnel

The number of excavated tunnels is increasing day by day, and the corresponding engineering scale is also getting increasing. Safe, efficient, and economically beneficial tunnel construction methods are indispensable in the process of crossing mountains and steep ridges in the southwest region. However, behind the improvement of transportation infrastructure in Southwest China is the support provided by the rapid development of blasting industry engineering technology in China. In the process of tunnel construction using the drilling and blasting method, in addition to blasting vibration disasters the phenomenon of overbreak and underbreak caused by blasting construction is a prominent problem. This phenomenon not only affects the safety and stability of the tunnel excavation but also seriously increases the construction cost. Based on a short mountain hard rock tunnel project in southwest China, this paper studies the effect of blasting construction on the blasting vibration of adjacent structures and the influence of tunnel contour forming quality. Through the monitoring and analysis of in situ blasting vibration, the Sadowski formula is used to study the attenuation law of blasting vibration velocity in different tunnel sites, which provides a theoretical basis for tunnel blasting vibration control. This article compares the use of overbreak and underbreak value with the traditional method to determine the degree of overbreak and underbreak. It introduces the analysis of contour section fractal dimension value and uses fractal theory in the Python image processing module to accurately and quantitatively describe the problems of tunnel overbreak and underbreak. The feasibility and accuracy of this method have been verified, by combining the total station and 3D laser scanner results of overbreak and underbreak measurements of the Brenner Base Tunnel and a short hard rock tunnel in a mountainous area of southwestern China. The blasting scheme was optimized from the aspects of cut hole form, detonator interval time, and peripheral hole charge structure, and the rationality of the optimized scheme was verified according to the on-site blasting experiments. It has a profound influence on strengthening the protection of adjacent tunnel structures and improving the economic benefit of mountain highway projects.

E-commerce development, poverty reduction and income growth in rural China

PurposeThis research examines the impact of the National Rural E-commerce Comprehensive Demonstration Project (NRECDP) on poverty reduction and income growth in rural China.Design/methodology/approachThe study develops a theoretical framework, which considers the role of geographical, technological, institutional and cultural factors for the e-commerce poverty alleviation (e-CPA) model. Empirically, this study applies the difference-in-differences (DID) model and the event study approach to evaluate the effectiveness of NRECDP on the basis of large-scale county-level and household-level panel data spanning 2010 to 2020.FindingsThe study found that the NRECDP, as a government-led, information and communication technology (ICT)-enabled, market-based program, has led to a significant increase in per capita output of primary industry employees, as well as in the disposable income of rural residents, especially those in national-level poverty-stricken (NP) counties. The interventions of the NRECDP achieved these positive outcomes through transportation and Internet infrastructure improvement, ICT adoption and human capital accumulation in impoverished towns and villages in remote rural areas. These effects are larger in the eastern region of China, followed by the central region, whereas the weakest effects were found in the western region. However, we found little evidence of the NRECDP increasing household developmental expenditure.Research limitations/implicationsThe study findings have important practical and policy implications for rural e-commerce development and self-sustained poverty alleviation solutions. The research revealed the significance of government NRECDP interventions for increasing rural income, reducing living costs, and empowering the rural population in its multiple social roles, namely, as consumers, producers, employees and microentrepreneurs. The local cultural context may also play a role in ICT adoption and entrepreneurship cultivation with a downstream effect on the effectiveness of e-CPA practices. Policymakers would need to ensure a supportive entrepreneur-friendly environment for rural e-commerce development and continue implementing progressive policies for poverty alleviation.Originality/valueThis study explores poverty alleviation issues in China by developing for the first time a multi-faceted framework that is subsequently tested by both county-level and household-level large-scale observations. Also, it is the first study to provide nationwide empirical evidence on the effectiveness of e-CPA in narrowing down the spatial and digital divides in China. In addition to the impact of geography, technology and governmental support, this study also sheds light on the role of culture in the adoption and diffusion of digital technologies and as a source of local entrepreneurial opportunities.

Understanding the Spatiotemporal Dynamics and Influencing Factors of the Rice–Crayfish Field in Jianghan Plain, China

The rice–crayfish co-culture system, a representative of Agri-aqua food systems, has emerged worldwide as an effective strategy for enhancing agricultural land use efficiency and boosting sustainability, particularly in China and Southeast Asia. Despite its widespread adoption in China’s Jianghan Plain, the exact spatiotemporal dynamics and factors influencing this practice in this region are yet to be clarified. Therefore, understanding the spatiotemporal dynamics and influencing factors of the rice–crayfish fields (RCFs) is crucial for promoting the rice–crayfish co-culture system, and optimizing land use policies. In this study, we identified the spatial distribution of RCF using Sentinel-2 images and land use spatiotemporal data to analyze its spatiotemporal dynamics during the period of 2016–2020. Additionally, we used the Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression model to explore the key factors influencing RCF’s spatiotemporal changes. Our findings reveal that (1). the RCF area in Jianghan Plain expanded from 1216.04 km2 to 2429.76 km2 between 2016 and 2020, marking a 99.81% increase. (2). RCF in Jianghan Plain evolved toward a more contiguous and clustered spatial pattern, suggesting a clear industrial agglomeration in this area. (3). The expansion of the RCFs was majorly influenced by its landscape and local agricultural conditions. Significantly, the Aggregation and Landscape Shape Indexes positively impacted this expansion, whereas proximity to rural areas and towns had a negative impact. This study provides a solid foundation for promoting the rice–crayfish co-culture system and sustainably developing related industries. To ensure the sustainable development of rice–crayfish co-culture industries in Jianghan Plain, we recommend that local governments optimize the spatial layout of rural settlements, improve transportation infrastructure, and enhance regional agricultural water sources and irrigation system construction, all in line with the national strategy of rural revitalization and village planning. Additionally, promoting the concentration and contiguity of RCF through land consolidation can achieve efficient development of these industries.

Impact of transport superiority on ecosystem health in arid regions: A case study of southern Xinjiang, China

The increasingly improved transportation infrastructure network is the prerequisite and foundation for driving regional development. Scientifically investigating the mechanisms by which the transport superiority degree (TSD) in arid regions affects the health of ecosystems holds significant practical value and importance for ecosystem protection and regional sustainable development. This study investigates the impact of the TSD on the Ecosystem Health Levels (EHL) in Southern Xinjiang, China, an area characterized by its arid climate and ecological vulnerability. Arid regions, such as Southern Xinjiang, often face unique ecological challenges, including water scarcity, soil erosion, and biodiversity loss, which can be exacerbated by human activities including transportation infrastructure development. By leveraging multi-source remote sensing data, this research aims to uncover the intricate dynamics between TSD and EHL in such a fragile ecological context. The findings of this study are critical for understanding the balance between infrastructural development and environmental conservation in arid regions and provide valuable insights for sustainable planning and policy-making in similar ecological settings. The research results show the following: (1) Over the study period, county-scale TSD in southern Xinjiang generally increased, while the conditions of EHL deteriorated, with higher EHL in the eastern counties than in the western counties. (2) Bivariate spatial autocorrelation analysis reveals a significant spatial dependency between county-scale TSD and EHL, with primary relationship types being LH (Low TSD − High EHL) and HL (High TSD − Low EHL). (3) Spatial regression model results indicate that an increase in TSD leads to the deterioration of county-scale EHL, and during the study period, it was observed that the interference of TSD on EHL gradually weakened.

The development of tourism at the destination level is closely linked to its attractiveness, which determines the prospects and opportunities for attracting tourist flows. New trends in the development of modern tourism as a socio-economic, cultural, and communicative institution require regional tourism entities to take appropriate practical measures. Increasing tourist flows requires the creation of an appropriate infrastructure, including the expansion of the network of accommodation facilities, the development of transport links and other services necessary to meet the needs of tourists. Political instability and the lack of a comprehensive, systematic model of tourism management have led to the decline of this sector in Ukraine. The relevance of this topic is driven by the need to develop strategies and management measures to ensure the attractiveness of urban destinations for tourists and to restore the tourism sector in line with international management models and examples of major urban tourist destinations. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the aspects of management, development, and recovery of a tourist destination on the example of Kyiv as part of Ukraine’s economic system in the context of a pandemic and war. The study uses systemic analysis, structural and functional approaches, as well as comparison methods. The study examines the problems associated with a decrease in tourist flow and loss of revenue in the tourism industry due to ineffective management of the tourist destination (pandemic and military operations in the country) and insufficiently developed infrastructure. This made it possible to formulate recommendations for solving problems, namely: improving transport infrastructure and creating and maintaining tourist infrastructure, such as hotels, restaurants and other facilities that will form an open state tourism policy. The concept of spatial-economic management and practical functionality of tourist destinations on the example of Kyiv is developed, provided that modern technologies, approaches, and methods of tourist destinations formation are used, which are components of the model of management of tourist areas development. The results of the study can be used to manage tourist destinations at the international and regional levels.
