Smartphone-Based Speech Therapy for Poststroke Dysarthria: Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluating Efficacy and Feasibility.

Dysarthria is a common poststroke speech disorder affecting communication and psychological well-being. Traditional speech therapy is effective but often poses challenges in terms of accessibility and patient adherence. Emerging smartphone-based therapies may offer promising alternatives for the treatment of poststroke dysarthria. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and feasibility of smartphone-based speech therapy for improving speech intelligibility in patients with acute and early subacute poststroke dysarthria. This study also explored the impact of the intervention on psychological well-being, user experience, and overall feasibility in a clinical setting. Participants were divided into 2 groups for this randomized, evaluator-blinded trial. The intervention group used a smartphone-based speech therapy app for 1 hour per day, 5 days per week, for 4 weeks, with guideline-based standard stroke care. The control group received standard guideline-based stroke care and rehabilitation. Speech intelligibility, psychological well-being, quality of life, and user acceptance were assessed using repeated measures ANOVA. In this study, 40 patients with poststroke dysarthria were enrolled, 32 of whom completed the trial (16 in each group). The intervention group showed significant improvements in speech intelligibility compared with the control group. This was evidenced by improvements from baseline (F1,30=34.35; P<.001), between-group differences (F1,30=6.18; P=.02), and notable time-by-group interactions (F1,30=6.91; P=.01). Regarding secondary outcomes, the intervention led to improvements in the percentage of correct consonants over time (F1,30=5.57; P=.03). In addition, significant reductions were noted in the severity of dysarthria in the intervention group over time (F1,30=21.18; P<.001), with a pronounced group effect (F1,30=5.52; P=.03) and time-by-group interaction (F1,30=5.29; P=.03). Regarding quality of life, significant improvements were observed as measured by the EQ-5D-3L questionnaire (F1,30=13.25; P<.001) and EQ-VAS (F1,30=7.74; P=.009) over time. The adherence rate to the smartphone-based app was 64%, with over half of the participants completing all the sessions. The usability of the app was rated high (system usability score 80.78). In addition, the intervention group reported increased self-efficacy in using the app compared with the control group (F1,30=10.81; P=.003). The smartphone-based speech therapy app significantly improved speech intelligibility, articulation, and quality of life in patients with poststroke dysarthria. These findings indicate that smartphone-based speech therapy can be a useful assistant device in the management of poststroke dysarthria, particularly in the acute and early subacute stroke stages. The Benefit of Bimodal Hearing and Beamforming for Cochlear Implant Users

Introduction: Cochlear implantation is the standard treatment for severe to profound hearing loss. While cochlear implant (CI) users can communicate effectively in quiet environments, speech understanding in noise remains challenging. Bimodal hearing, combining a CI in one ear and a hearing aid (HA) in the other, has shown advantages over unilateral electrical hearing, especially for speech understanding in noisy conditions. Beamforming is a technique used to improve speech understanding in noise by detecting sound direction and enhancing frontal (speech) sounds while attenuating background noise. One specific beamformer, Stereozoom, combines signals from microphones in both ears to create a focused beam toward the front resulting in a binaural beamformer (BB), in order to improve speech intelligibility in noise for bilateral and bimodal CI users. Methods: A prospective crossover study involving 17 bimodal CI users was conducted, and participants were tested with various device configurations (CI, HA, CI + HA) with and without BB. Speech recognition testing with the Dutch/Flemish matrix test was performed in a sound-attenuated booth with diffuse noise to simulate realistic listening conditions. Results: The results showed a statistically significant benefit of bimodal hearing over the CI configuration and showed a statistical significant benefit of BB for the CI and CI + HA configuration. The benefit of BB in the HA configuration was not statistically significant probably due to the higher variance. The benefit of BB in the three configurations did not differ statistically significant. Conclusion: In conclusion, bimodal hearing offers advantages for speech understanding in noise for CI users. BB provides a benefit in various device configurations, leading to improved speech intelligibility when speech comes from the front in challenging listening environments.

Objective intelligibility measurement of reverberant vocoded speech for normal-hearing listeners: Towards facilitating the development of speech enhancement algorithms for cochlear implants.

Cochlear implant (CI) recipients often struggle to understand speech in reverberant environments. Speech enhancement algorithms could restore speech perception for CI listeners by removing reverberant artifacts from the CI stimulation pattern. Listening studies, either with cochlear-implant recipients or normal-hearing (NH) listeners using a CI acoustic model, provide a benchmark for speech intelligibility improvements conferred by the enhancement algorithm but are costly and time consuming. To reduce the associated costs during algorithm development, speech intelligibility could be estimated offline using objective intelligibility measures. Previous evaluations of objective measures that considered CIs primarily assessed the combined impact of noise and reverberation and employed highly accurate enhancement algorithms. To facilitate the development of enhancement algorithms, we evaluate twelve objective measures in reverberant-only conditions characterized by a gradual reduction of reverberant artifacts, simulating the performance of an enhancement algorithm during development. Measures are validated against the performance of NH listeners using a CI acoustic model. To enhance compatibility with reverberant CI-processed signals, measure performance was assessed after modifying the reference signal and spectral filterbank. Measures leveraging the speech-to-reverberant ratio, cepstral distance and, after modifying the reference or filterbank, envelope correlation are strong predictors of intelligibility for reverberant CI-processed speech.

Research on Speech Emotion Recognition Analysis Based on Deep Learning

Speech is a common way of communication in human daily life, which is very natural and easy to understand. In the process of communication, one will also express their emotions to the other party. Through emotional expression, the distance between people is smaller and communication is more convenient. Speech emotion recognition is also the key to human-computer emotional interaction, and effective recognition of speech emotions can improve speech intelligibility. The number of speech datasets is usually large, with several G or even larger. This article proposes a method of preprocessing the speech dataset to extract feature data folders, and then using the feature data folder directory as input to train the model. This method helps to improve the efficiency, repeatability, and manageability of data processing.

Effects of speech rate modifications on phonatory acoustic outcomes in Parkinson's disease.

Speech rate reduction is a global speech therapy approach for speech deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD) that has the potential to result in changes across multiple speech subsystems. While the overall goal of rate reduction is usually improvements in speech intelligibility, not all people with PD benefit from this approach. Speech rate is often targeted as a means of improving articulatory precision, though less is known about rate-induced changes in other speech subsystems that could help or hinder communication. The purpose of this study was to quantify phonatory changes associated with speech rate modification across a broad range of speech rates from very slow to very fast in talkers with and without PD. Four speaker groups participated: younger and older healthy controls, and people with PD with and without deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus (STN-DBS). Talkers read aloud standardized sentences at 7 speech rates elicited using magnitude production: habitual, three slower rates, and three faster rates. Acoustic measures of speech intensity, cepstral peak prominence, and fundamental frequency were measured as a function of speech rate and group. Overall, slower rates of speech were associated with differential effects on phonation across the four groups. While all talkers spoke at a lower pitch in slow speech, younger talkers showed increases in speech intensity and cepstral peak prominence, while talkers with PD and STN-DBS showed the reverse pattern. Talkers with PD without STN-DBS and older healthy controls behaved in between these two extremes. At faster rates, all groups uniformly demonstrated increases in cepstral peak prominence. While speech rate reductions are intended to promote positive changes in articulation to compensate for speech deficits in dysarthria, the present results highlight that undesirable changes may be invoked across other subsystems, such as at the laryngeal level. In particular, talkers with STN-DBS, who often demonstrate speech deterioration following DBS surgery, demonstrated more phonatory detriments at slowed speech rates. Findings have implications for speech rate candidacy considerations and speech motor control processes in PD.

Evaluation of the effect of palatoplasty on the quality of life and speech outcomes in patients with velocardiofacial syndrome.

Children diagnosed with velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) suffer from various disabilities. Palatal abnormalities, as well as speech and language impairment, adversely affect a child's quality of life (QoL) and are some of the most distressing aspects for the parents of these children. The present study aimed to explore the effect of palatoplasty on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and speech outcomes in children with VCFS. The study recruited 20 patients (N = 20) with VCFS and connected speech, aged 3 years or older, having either undiagnosed submucous cleft palate (SMCP) or velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), and requiring primary cleft palate surgery or revision surgery. Speech assessment was conducted prior to palatoplasty and 6 months after the surgery. Intelligibility and hypernasality were evaluated using the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech - Augmented (CAPS-A). The parent proxy-report form of the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL™) was used to evaluate and compare the HRQoL of the VCFS patients before and after palatoplasty. Significant improvement in the HRQoL scores was achieved after the surgery across all domains (physical, emotional, social, and school functioning), especially in the emotional and social dimensions (p < 0.000). The post-operative speech assessment based on CAPS-A demonstrated improvement in speech intelligibility and hypernasality in the majority of patients. Given that children with VCFS face various medical and social problems, suitable palatal interventions are beneficial, improving both the speech ability and QoL of these children.

Efficacy and feasibility of a digital speech therapy for post-stroke dysarthria: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Dysarthria is a motor speech disorder caused by various neurological diseases, particularly stroke. Individuals with post-stroke dysarthria experience impaired speech intelligibility, communication difficulties, and a reduced quality of life. However, studies on the treatment of post-stroke dysarthria are lacking. Digital speech therapy applications have the advantages of being personalized and easily accessible. However, evidence for their efficacy is not rigorous. Moreover, no studies have investigated both the acute to subacute, and chronic phases of stroke. This study aims to investigate the efficacy and feasibility of digital speech therapy applications in addressing these gaps in dysarthria treatment. This study is a multicenter, prospective, randomized, evaluator-blinded non-inferiority trial. We aim to recruit 76 participants with post-stroke dysarthria. Eligible participants will be stratified based on the onset period of stroke into acute to subacute, and chronic phases. Participants will be randomized in a 1:1 to receive either a personalized digital speech therapy application or conventional therapy with a workbook for 60 min daily, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks. The primary outcome is the improvement in speech intelligibility. This will be measured by how accurately independent listeners can transcribe passages read by the participants. Secondary outcomes, which include speech function, will be evaluated remotely by speech-language pathologists. This includes the maximum phonation time, oral diadochokinetic rate, and percentage of consonants correct. Participants' psychological well-being will also be assessed using self-report questionnaires, such as depressive symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-9) and quality of life (Quality of Life in the Dysarthric Speaker scale). The trial will also assess the feasibility, participant adherence, and usability of the application. Rigorous data collection and monitoring will be implemented to ensure patient safety. This trial aims to investigate the efficacy and feasibility of digital speech therapy applications for treating post-stroke dysarthria. The Effects of Signal to Noise Ratio, T60 , Wide-Dynamic Range Compression Speed, and Digital Noise Reduction in a Virtual Restaurant Setting.

Hearing aid processing in realistic listening environments is difficult to study effectively. Often the environment is unpredictable or unknown, such as in wearable aid trials with subjective report by the wearer. Some laboratory experiments create listening environments to exert tight experimental control, but those environments are often limited by physical space, a small number of sound sources, or room absorptive properties. Simulation techniques bridge this gap by providing greater experimental control over listening environments, effectively bringing aspects of the real-world into the laboratory. This project used simulation to study the effects of wide-dynamic range compression (WDRC) and digital noise reduction (DNR) on speech intelligibility in a reverberant environment with six spatialized competing talkers. The primary objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of WDRC and DNR in a complex listening environment using virtual auditory space techniques. Participants of greatest interest were listeners with hearing impairment. A group of listeners with clinically normal hearing was included to assess the effects of the simulation absent the complex effects of hearing loss. Virtual auditory space techniques were used to simulate a small restaurant listening environment with two different reverberation times (0.8 and 1.8 sec) in a range of signal to noise ratios (SNRs) (-8.5 to 11.5 dB SNR). Six spatialized competing talkers were included to further enhance realism. A hearing aid simulation was used to examine the degree to which speech intelligibility was affected by slow and fast WDRC in conjunction with the presence or absence of DNR. The WDRC and DNR settings were chosen to be reasonable estimates of hearing aids currently available to consumers. A WDRC × DNR × Hearing Status interaction was observed, such that DNR was beneficial for speech intelligibility when combined with fast WDRC speeds, but DNR was detrimental to speech intelligibility when WDRC speeds were slow. The pattern of the WDRC × DNR interaction was observed for both listener groups. Significant main effects of reverberation time and SNR were observed, indicating better performance with lower reverberation times and more positive SNR. DNR reduced low-amplitude noise before WDRC-amplified the low-intensity portions of the signal, negating one potential downside of fast WDRC and leading to an improvement in speech intelligibility in this simulation. These data suggest that, in some real-world environments that include both reverberation and noise, older listeners with hearing impairment may find speech to be more intelligible if DNR is activated when the hearing aid has fast compression time constants. Additional research is needed to determine the appropriate DNR strength and to confirm results in wearable hearing aids and a wider range of listening environments.

Speech Intelligibility versus Congruency: User Preferences of the Acoustics of Virtual Reality Game Spaces

3D audio spatializers for Virtual Reality (VR) can use the acoustic properties of the surfaces of a visualised game space to calculate a matching reverb. However, this approach could lead to reverbs that impair the tasks performed in such a space, such as listening to speech-based audio. Sound designers would then have to alter the room’s acoustic properties independently of its visualisation to improve speech intelligibility, causing audio-visual incongruency. As user expectation of simulated room acoustics regarding speech intelligibility in VR has not been studied, this study asked participants to rate the congruency of reverbs and their visualisations in 6-DoF VR while listening to speech-based audio. The participants compared unaltered, matching reverbs with sound-designed, mismatching reverbs. The latter feature improved D50s and reduced RT60s at the cost of lower audio-visual congruency. Results suggest participants preferred improved reverbs only when the unaltered reverbs had comparatively low D50s or excessive ringing. Otherwise, too dry or too reverberant reverbs were disliked. The range of expected RT60s depended on the surface visualisation. Differences in timbre between the reverbs may not affect preferences as strongly as shorter RT60s. Therefore, sound designers can intervene and prioritise speech intelligibility over audio-visual congruency in acoustically challenging game spaces.

Cochlear Implant: Analysis of the Frequency-to-Place Mismatch with the Table-Based Software OTOPLAN® and Its Influence on Hearing Performance

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the originally applied frequency allocation of cochlear implant electrodes assigned by default at the time of activation with a more recent frequency allocation that is anatomy-based by a software called OTOPLAN^®. Based on a computed tomography scan of the temporal bone, this software calculates the position of each electrode in the cochlea and its corresponding tonotopic frequency. We also evaluated whether patients with a significant mismatch between these two allocations present poorer speech intelligibility. Materials and Methods: Patients who underwent cochlear implantation from 2016 to 2021 at the University Hospital of Liege were included in this retrospective study. We used OTOPLAN^® to calculate the tonotopic frequency allocation of each electrode according to its exact position in the cochlear duct. This anatomical frequency mapping was compared with the default frequency mapping at the time of cochlear implant activation. Finally, we compared the mismatch with the patients’ auditory performance, represented by the Auditory Capacity Index (ACI). Results: Thirteen patients were included in the study. All patients had a mismatch between the two frequency maps, to a variable extent (200 Hz–1,100 Hz). Frequency shift was significantly inversely correlated with ACI and with the time needed to improve speech intelligibility. Conclusion: Our primary results show that patients with a larger mismatch between default frequency mapping and anatomically assigned frequency mapping experience poorer hearing performance and slower adaptation to a cochlear implant.

Room acoustics of Mycelium Textiles: the Myx Sail at the Danish Design Museum

Abstract Taking the Myx Sail displayed at the Danish Design Museum as a case study, this article investigates the room acoustics of an architectural installation made of Mycelium Textiles. Mycelium Textiles represent a novel typology of mycelium-based composites (MBC). The Myx Sail absorbers are grown on a composition of different layers of plant fibres combining woven jute textile with hemp mat and loose wood wool substrate enhancing the mechanical and acoustic properties of the composite. Two complementary acoustic tests were conducted to measure the absorbing properties of the mycelium material and its effects on the acoustics of the exhibition hall. The results show that the sail acts effectively as an acoustic absorber especially in higher range of frequencies, reducing the reverberation time and improving speech intelligibility. The effect of the sail on the overall room acoustics is especially effective, if the sound source is placed directly underneath the sail. The results of a complementary survey amongst visitors on their subjective perception of comfort and well-being however indicate that the degree to which a grown surface (and by extension, a grown building) is perceived positively or negatively depends on the relationship the individual has with Nature.

Focusing on Positive Listening Experiences Improves Speech Intelligibility in Experienced Hearing Aid Users.

Negativity bias is a cognitive bias that results in negative events being perceptually more salient than positive ones. For hearing care, this means that hearing aid benefits can potentially be overshadowed by adverse experiences. Research has shown that sustaining focus on positive experiences has the potential to mitigate negativity bias. The purpose of the current study was to investigate whether a positive focus (PF) intervention can improve speech-in-noise abilities for experienced hearing aid users. Thirty participants were randomly allocated to a control or PF group (N = 2 × 15). Prior to hearing aid fitting, all participants filled out the short form of the Speech, Spatial and Qualities of Hearing scale (SSQ12) based on their own hearing aids. At the first visit, they were fitted with study hearing aids, and speech-in-noise testing was performed. Both groups then wore the study hearing aids for two weeks and sent daily text messages reporting hours of hearing aid use to an experimenter. In addition, the PF group was instructed to focus on positive listening experiences and to also report them in the daily text messages. After the 2-week trial, all participants filled out the SSQ12 questionnaire based on the study hearing aids and completed the speech-in-noise testing again. Speech-in-noise performance and SSQ12 Qualities score were improved for the PF group but not for the control group. This finding indicates that the PF intervention can improve subjective and objective hearing aid benefits.

Improved speech intelligibility in the presence of congruent vibrotactile speech input

Vibrotactile stimulation is believed to enhance auditory speech perception, offering potential benefits for cochlear implant (CI) users who may utilize compensatory sensory strategies. Our study advances previous research by directly comparing tactile speech intelligibility enhancements in normal-hearing (NH) and CI participants, using the same paradigm. Moreover, we assessed tactile enhancement considering stimulus non-specific, excitatory effects through an incongruent audio-tactile control condition that did not contain any speech-relevant information. In addition to this incongruent audio-tactile condition, we presented sentences in an auditory only and a congruent audio-tactile condition, with the congruent tactile stimulus providing low-frequency envelope information via a vibrating probe on the index fingertip. The study involved 23 NH listeners and 14 CI users. In both groups, significant tactile enhancements were observed for congruent tactile stimuli (5.3% for NH and 5.4% for CI participants), but not for incongruent tactile stimulation. These findings replicate previously observed tactile enhancement effects. Juxtaposing our study with previous research, the informational content of the tactile stimulus emerges as a modulator of intelligibility: Generally, congruent stimuli enhanced, non-matching tactile stimuli reduced, and neutral stimuli did not change test outcomes. We conclude that the temporal cues provided by congruent vibrotactile stimuli may aid in parsing continuous speech signals into syllables and words, consequently leading to the observed improvements in intelligibility.

Altered Auditory Feedback Improves Speech Intelligibility in Individuals Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease: A Pilot Study

Introduction: The purpose of the current study was to evaluate speech intelligibility and speech rate in individuals with Parkinson’s disease using altered auditory feedback (AAF) in comparison to age-matched healthy controls. Based on prior research, it is hypothesized that the use of AAF will improve participants’ speech intelligibility. Methods: Five individuals with Parkinson’s disease (clinical group) and five age-matched healthy controls aged 50 years and above participated in this pre-/post-group experiment. All participants completed reading and monologue tasks with and without AAF. The AAF delayed the participants’ auditory feedback by 150 ms and altered it by 1/20 octave. Thirty-two naïve listeners listened to the recorded participants’ speech samples (with and without AAF) randomly and rated the participants’ speech intelligibility. Results: Results of the mixed model ANOVA revealed that participants in the control group had significantly higher speech intelligibility scores than the participants in the clinical group. Post hoc tests indicated that only participants in the clinical group were more intelligible with AAF than without AAF. Participants in the clinical group had better speech intelligibility when reading the passage than speaking the monologue. With regards to speech rate, participants spoke more slowly with AAF than without. Finally, there was a negative correlation between speech rate and speech intelligibility. Discussion: The current findings support our hypothesis that AAF improves speech intelligibility in people with Parkinson’s disease, though not in healthy controls. Future research should evaluate the long-term effect of AAF use on speech intelligibility in people with Parkinson’s disease.

Performance of speech enhancement algorithms on the speech intelligibility of native Mandarin listeners immersed in English-speaking environment

Speech enhancement algorithms have been developed to improve speech intelligibility for listeners under noisy conditions. However, all existing algorithms were evaluated only by native listeners, the performance of such algorithms on non-native listeners was rarely investigated. This study conducts a subjective listening test on native New Zealand English listeners and native Mandarin listeners who have been immersed in New Zealand English-speaking environment for more than one year. The participants were asked to transcribe noisy English sentences processed by five widely used single-channel speech enhancement algorithms. The speech intelligibility of the two groups was quantified and compared to investigate the effectiveness of the speech enhancement algorithms on non-native listeners who are familiar with the target language.

Relation between sound absorption and speech intelligibility in room, part 1: Theoretical investigation

In Japan, requirements and design guidelines on sound absorption of a variety of ordinary spaces are currently under consideration. In general, sound absorption works for reverberation suppression and noise reduction, both of which contributes to improve speech intelligibility performance. However, its combined effect is not fully clarified, especially on the relationship among of reverberation time, average absorption coefficient and speech intelligibility indices. In this paper, two theoretical case studies are performed based on the formulations of the clarity C50 and the useful-to-detrimental ratio U50 in the conditions without and with background noise. For rectangular rooms with an aspect ratio of 1:2:4, those indices are calculated at three source-to-receiver distances, changing the room volume widely under different noise levels. The results demonstrated that the absorption coefficient required for a target C50 increases with increasing the room volume, but it decreases beyond a certain volume. Moreover, it was shown that under high background noise, U50 is not effectively improved by increasing the absorption coefficient if the communication distance is much longer than the critical distance.

The effects of temporal cues, point-light displays, and faces on speech identification and listening effort.

Among the most robust findings in speech research is that the presence of a talking face improves the intelligibility of spoken language. Talking faces supplement the auditory signal by providing fine phonetic cues based on the placement of the articulators, as well as temporal cues to when speech is occurring. In this study, we varied the amount of information contained in the visual signal, ranging from temporal information alone to a natural talking face. Participants were presented with spoken sentences in energetic or informational masking in four different visual conditions: audio-only, a modulating circle providing temporal cues to salient features of the speech, a digitally rendered point-light display showing lip movement, and a natural talking face. We assessed both sentence identification accuracy and self-reported listening effort. Audiovisual benefit for intelligibility was observed for the natural face in both informational and energetic masking, but the digitally rendered point-light display only provided benefit in energetic masking. Intelligibility for speech accompanied by the modulating circle did not differ from the audio-only conditions in either masker type. Thus, the temporal cues used here were insufficient to improve speech intelligibility in noise, but some types of digital point-light displays may contain enough phonetic detail to produce modest improvements in speech identification in noise.

A Transparent Mask and Clear Speech Benefit Speech Intelligibility in Individuals With Hearing Loss.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the impacts of a surgical mask and a transparent mask on audio-only and audiovisual speech intelligibility in noise (i.e., 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio) in individuals with mild-to-profound hearing loss. The study also examined if individuals with hearing loss can benefit from using a transparent mask and clear speech for speech understanding in noise. Thirty-one individuals with hearing loss (from 22 to 74 years old) completed keyword identification tasks to measure face-masked speech intelligibility in noise. A mixed-effects logistic regression model was used to examine the effects of face masks (no mask, transparent mask, surgical mask), presentation modes (audio only, audiovisual), speaking styles (conversational, clear), noise type (speech-shaped noise [SSN], four-talker babble [4-T babble]), hearing groups (mild hearing loss [MHL], greater than MHL: GHL), and their interactions on binary accuracy of keyword identification. In the audio-only mode, the GHL group showed reduced speech intelligibility regardless of other factors, whereas the MHL group showed decreased speech intelligibility for the transparent mask more than for the surgical mask. The use of a transparent mask was advantageous for both hearing loss groups. Clear speech remediated the detrimental effects of face masks on speech intelligibility in noise. Both groups tended to perform better in SSN versus 4-T babble. The findings indicate that, when using face masks, either a transparent mask or a surgical mask negatively affects speech understanding in noise for individuals with hearing loss. Using a transparent mask and clear speech could be a potential solution to improve speech intelligibility in communication with face masks in noise.

Single-channel speech enhancement by PSO-GSA with harmonic regeneration noise reduction

Speech quality significantly affects the performance of speech dependent systems. Noise in the background lowers the clarity and intelligibility of speech. The augmentation of speech can increase its quality. We propose a single-channel speech improvement framework that combines particle swarm optimization (PSO), gravitational search algorithm (GSA), and harmonic regeneration noise reduction (HRNR) to minimize speech signal noise and increase speech intelligibility. The proposed hybrid algorithm optimizes the amount of overlap between the noisy speech frames. This helps in reducing the overlapped noise. Then HRNR algorithm is applied to retain the speech harmonics. The algorithm gives improvement in the speech intelligibility for babble, car and exhibition noise. The segmental signal to noise ratio (SNR) is also improved for these noise types. There is improvement in speech intelligibility with minimal speech distortion.
