Kick-start your scientific journey into the metaverse

The term “metaverse” first appeared in Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science fiction novel Snow Crash. It was defined as a virtual environment shared through the Internet in which avatars represent people in three dimensions, and users can build what they wish. Since the publication of Stephenson’s novel, technological advances have enabled the creation of several metaverses for widespread usages, such as virtual world platforms like World of Warcraft and Second Life. This paper aims to review studies on the metaverse using bibliometric analysis. The findings include a summary of the most important scientific articles and journals in the subject area and the most prolific and prominent authors, organisations, and nations. Furthermore, keyword co-occurrence analysis revealed the core research clusters and their sub-themes, allowing for more pertinent debates and viewpoints on crucial areas for future research. Finally, the implications for theory and practice have been addressed, offering a comprehensive overview of expected metaverse impacts on industry and society.

Does the Political Variable Explain the COVID-19 Event in Brazil?

In effectively confronting the Covid-19 pandemic, it is necessary to complement the contributions of Biomedical Sciences to those offered by the Human Sciences. The theoretical foundations derived from the treatment of the interaction of the infectious agent with the host, primates in formatting the guidelines adopted by the World Health Organization, faced strong opposition from government officials in countries such as Brazil, giving rise to critical pronouncements by researchers in the biomedical sciences in space offered by important scientific journals. Despite being fruitful and strategic in nature, we feel encouraged to consider the objective limits of such investiture, a direct reflection of the lack of dialogue with the Human Sciences, in the field of politics and, mainly, of urbanism. Taking as a starting point the unfolding of the phenomenon in Brazil, specifically in the metropolis of Fortaleza-Ceará, we will show how the "denial" posture is inserted in a broader context, encompassing both a representative political framework of a federative government and including postures of insurgency of the Local Governments (of the federative states) in relation to the Central Government as social and economic aspects that characterize a westernized country to establish impactful filtering genre in the implementation of policies of ordering and control of the singular space. In these terms, the drastic expansion of Covid-19 in Brazil denotes a paradoxical picture to represent: a political context of resistance by Local Governments to minimize the controversial actions and attitudes of the Central Government, specifically the creation of the Forum of Governors in the Northeast to guarantee incorporation WHO international guidelines; a trajectory of unequal and perverse modernization that corroborates the indication of a high number of cases and, mainly, deaths in precarious urbanization areas of cities such as Fortaleza, establishing the periphery as the territory of death, registered in areas with a high social vulnerability index of negatively impact the effective implementation of the social isolation policy.

The European Heart Journal: fulfilling the mission.

In September 2020, the new Editors of the European Heart Journal (EHJ) wrote the following in their inaugural editorial: "The fundamental mission of the Journal remains the reduction of the global burden of cardiovascular disease. We aspire to advance this aim by worldwide teamwork to communicate practice-changing research, inspire clinical cardiologists, and pursue rigour and transparency in the application of science at the service of human health. The Journal will strive to lead the field in its impact, influence, and reach". After more than one year of experience the Editors hope the cardiological community will agree that they are fulfilling this mission. As stewards of the EHJ, the Editor's primary goal is not solely to achieve a high Impact Factor (which attests to the scientific quality and influence of our publications) but also to elevate the practice of cardiovascular medicine worldwide. Accordingly, various initiatives of the EHJ strive to strengthen further links among Editors, Authors, Reviewers and Readers through a series of coordinated and diverse activities, including webinars, active social media presence, and active participation at congresses worldwide. The Editors are proud to serve one of the most important scientific journals in cardiovascular medicine.

Pharmacovigilance

Pharmacovigilance started about 170 years ago, although it was not yet named as such at that time. It is structured activity in the professional health field, with important social and commercial implications aimed at monitoring the risk/benefit ratio of drugs, improving patient’s safety and the quality of life. In this commentary we report the milestones of pharmacovigilance up to the present day, in order to understand all the steps that have characterized the historical evolution; from the first reports, which were essentially letters or warnings sent by clinicians to publishers of important and famous scientific journals, up to today’s modern and ultrastructured electronic registries. The historical phases also help us to understand why pharmacovigilance helped us to achieve such important results for man’s health and for pharmacology itself, and to identify the challenges that await Pharmacovigilance in future years.

Technologies and Modeling for Electromagnetically Mediated Medical Treatments [From the Guest Editor's Desk

This focused issue is one of several activities promoted in the framework of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) Technical Committee (TC) 28, Biological Effects and Medical Applications. TC28 regularly develops a variety of activities in topics related to applications of RF and microwave technology in medicine and biology. These include the organization of special issues or review papers for the most important scientific journals, support of scientific conferences and events, proposals for special sessions and workshops, and management of fellowship programs.

Open Access Journals: A Boon or Bane for Early Career Researchers in India

Background : It is demonstrated that for a junior research faculty in India, proper guidelines and funding resources are required to publish research articles in the Open Access (OA) journals. Recently, many of the important scientific journals are turned out to be OA journals. When we need to publish in an OA journal, the funding support for article processing charge (APC) is uncertain due to the limited funds or absence of institutional level support. Objective: To find out the total number of open access and subscription based articles published from the top ten countries in the scientific journals up to July 2020. Materials and Methods: For the data collection, a keyword of “Chemistry” was used in all fields in the “Scopus database” on 07 July 2020. Results: From the articles published by top ten countries, it was found that USA has published more number of publications (open access plus subscription based) followed by China, Japan, Germany, UK, India, France, Canada, Italy, and the Russian Federation. However, if we carefully look at the total numbers of OA publications up to July 2020, Japan (33.47%) has published more percentage of OA documents compared to UK (26.92%), Germany (24.63%) and the USA (24.53%). In this list, India (13.02%) and the Russian Federation (10.14%) have published the lowest numbers of OA publications compared to other countries. Conclusion: It was found that about ~50% of OA publications resulted from India might come from collaborative research. The APC may be supported by other countries along with India. In addition, it was obvious that the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) had published the highest OA papers, followed by CSIR India and the University of Delhi. From the past ten years, OA publications from India were doubled in number from 2011 to July 2020. However, it requires further efforts to increase our scientific progress and research accomplishments by the number of publications, patents, and commercial products to support the Make in India.

Bilgi Dünyası Dergisi: 2000-2019 Dönemi için Makale, Yazar ve Konu Unsurları Açısından Niceliksel Bir Değerlendirme

Bilgi Dünyası Türkiye’de kütüphanecilik (bilgi ve belge yönetimi) alanının en önemli bilimselmesleki dergilerinden birisidir. 20 yıldır sürdürdüğü yayın yaşamı ile kütüphane bilimine ve mesleğine destek olmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Bilgi Dünyası dergisinin 2000-2019 dönemi itibariyle yayın türleri, yazar ve konu unsurları açısından sayısal analizini yapmaktır. Betimleme yöntemi ile gerçekleştirilen çalışma kapsamında 20 yıl içinde yayımlanan 40 sayıda yer alan hakemli makale, tanıtım-eleştiri ve görüş yazıları incelenmiştir. Çalışma sonucunda, Bilgi Dünyası dergisinde 2000-2019 yılları arasında toplam 360 yazar tarafından 229’u hakemli makale, 97’si tanıtım-eleştiri, 88’i görüş ve 22’si diğer türde yazılar olmak üzere toplam 436 yazı yayımlandığı anlaşılmıştır. Dergide her sayı başına ortalama 5,5 hakemli makale yayımlanmıştır. Derginin makale sayısındaki yıllık değişimlerin belirli bir dengede olmadığı ve yıllık konusal değişmelerin de büyük ölçüde yazarların uzmanlık alanlarına ve kütüphanecilik alanında yeni ortaya çıkan konulara bağlı olarak değişim gösterdiği anlaşılmıştır. Çalışmanın sonunda, dergi yönetim yapısının profesyonelleştirilmesi ve kurumsallaştırılmasının stratejik bir hedef olarak değerlendirilmesi önerilmiştir.

Bibliometric evaluation of Latin American contributions on COVID-19

ResumenIntroducción. La propagación de la COVID-19, una enfermedad infecciosa causada por el nuevo coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, se ha convertido en una pandemia que, a la par de su rápida diseminación a nivel mundial, ha traído consigo un aumento exponencial de la cantidad de estudios relacionados con el tema, fenómeno en el que los investigadores de Latinoamérica han participado activamente.Objetivo. Llevar a cabo un estudio bibliométrico descriptivo para identificar las tendencias de la investigación sobre COVID-19 producida en Latinoamérica. Materiales y métodos. Se recurrió a las bases de datos Web of Science, Scopus y Pubmed para recuperar la producción científica latinoamericana sobre COVID-19. Se analizaron los indicadores bibliométricos de producción, visibilidad, impacto y colaboración para evaluar la participación regional en la investigación sobre el tema. Resultados. El análisis de 142 documentos evidenció un crecimiento exponencial de la producción científica en el corto periodo analizado, una significativa colaboración internacional (51,4 %), y el liderazgo de las instituciones regionales (71 %) en la investigación con aportes en revistas de alta visibilidad, especialmente de Colombia, Brasil y México. Conclusiones. El estudio evidenció resultados relevantes sobre la participación regional en la investigación sobre COVID-19, no solo en cuanto a la cantidad y el crecimiento exponencial, sino también a su calidad y excelencia, con una elevada tasa de colaboración internacional y de publicación en revistas de reconocido prestigio, lo que, además de ser clave para la visibilidad de los países, es un considerable aporte a las investigaciones que se realizan en otros contextos geográficos.

Tourism from an Anthropological Perspective in the Journal “Folia Turistica” (1990-2018).

Purpose. The objective of the article is an attempt to present the contribution of the scientific journal “Folia Turistica” to the development of research and transfer of humanistic knowledge about tourism, with particular emphasis on anthropology and (anthropologising) sociology, as both disciplines were important in creating the theory of tourism. Method. Qualitative research; discourse analysis; query of the published issues of “Folia Turistica” – from 1-1990 to 49-2018. Findings. The results of the analysis of the journal refer to humanistic knowledge on tourism studied from anthropological, cultural, sociological, (socio)linguistic and interdisciplinary perspectives. Increasing the role of anthropological knowledge in education and studies on tourism is a chance to acquire competences that are useful in understanding various aspects of tourist experiences and intercultural relations. Scientific journals, serving as a forum for the exchange of ideas, criticism and debates, co-create this process, reflect the trends which are popular in the research community and set new paths of inquiry. The profile of subsequent volumes of “Folia ...” illustrates the stages of development of studies on tourism, as evidenced by the presence of texts discussing current issues, theories and methods. Research and conclusions limitations. The article is based on qualitative and hermeneutic research and concerns one journal, which limits the possibilities of comparing and generalising the results. The analysis allows to identify humanistic issues (including those anthropological) in relation to tourism, without quantitative data illustration of, for example, the frequency of occurrence regarding a given topic, method or theory. Practical implications. The work may be important for researchers seeking information on the role of the studied journal in the transfer of knowledge on tourism. The conclusions from the analysis show the process of including content focused on the cultural and social nature of tourism, reflecting the development of studies on this phenomenon in Poland. The results are interpreted in a broader epistemological context and may contribute to the debate on prospects concerning further development of interdisciplinary tourism studies. Originality. This is the first study of this type on the subject of the periodical “Folia Turistica”, one of the most important Polish scientific journals in the field of tourism. Type of work. Review article, supplemented by author’s empirical research.

AS GEOGRAFIAS UNIVERSITÁRIAS PORTUGUESA E BRASILEIRA NAS REVISTAS GEOGRAPHIA E FINISTERRA – 2000-2016 / THE PORTUGUESE AND BRAZILIAN UNIVERSITY GEOGRAPHIES IN THE MAGAZINES GEOGRAPHY AND FINISTERRA - 2000-2016

Este texto apresenta alguns resultados da pesquisa realizada na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro sobre as relações entre as Geografias institucionais brasileira e portuguesa. A ideia central é refletir sobre as características e as tendências da produção geográfica universitária no século XXI no Brasil e em Portugal, tendo como base os artigos publicados em dois importantes periódicos científicos vinculados a duas universidades públicas em ambos os países, a GEOgraphia, da Universidade Federal Fluminense, e a FINISTERRA, da Universidade de Lisboa. Primeiramente são tecidas considerações sobre a história e a estrutura dos periódicos. Em seguida, é apresentada a metodologia de análise empregada e, finalmente, de forma detalhada, são expostos e discutidos os dados levantados a partir do exame, da classificação e da comparação dos artigos publicados nos periódicos geográficos brasileiro e português.

Czy GIS podnosi rangę dyscyplin geograficznych? Znaczenie GIS i GIScience dla geografii

Geografowie postrzegają technologie informacyjne i komunikacyjne, w tym oprogramowanie GIS, jako element nieuchronnych przemian w geografii. Część uważa, że są instrumentami pomocniczymi geografii, część zauważa „cyfrowy zwrot” (digital turn), który odnawia zainteresowanie i związki z takimi dziedzinami, jak computational social sciences oraz data-driven geography w celu uzyskania głębszego wglądu w badania ilościowe, w skali czasowej, wielorozdzielcze i wieloskalowe. Współcześnie różnorodność cyfrowych urządzeń, platform, aplikacji i usług jest nieodłącznym, normalnym i oczekiwanym elementem codziennego życia, a technologie cyfrowe są również standardem medialnym generowania i analizy wiedzy w badaniach jakościowych. W miarę postępu, komercjalizacji i popularyzacji technologii geoprzestrzennych, one same przyczyniają się do rozwoju ontologii i epistemologii przestrzennych. Analiza semantyczna artykułów opublikowanych w najważniejszych czasopismach naukowych dedykowanych różnym dyscyplinom geografii (w latach 2014–2018) dowodzi, że w geograficznym dyskursie naukowym najbardziej aktywne jawią się czasopisma geograficzne podejmujące tematykę interdyscyplinarną, metodologiczną lub z zakresu geografii stosowanej.

Na podstawie wybranych danych, takich jak rankingi uczelni, granty ERC oraz publikacje w najważniejszych czasopismach naukowych, analizowane jest miejsce polskiej nauki w światowej konkurencji. Następnie omówione są konieczne regulacje, które powinny zostać wprowadzone, by to miejsce poprawić. Najważniejszą z nich jest zmiana sposobu zarządzania naszymi uniwersytetami, a przede wszystkim inny sposób wyboru ich władz.

Bibliometric analysis over research on “client satisfaction”

The objective of this study is to analyze publication’s evolution on the topic of client satisfaction using the Scopus database in the English language for the period 1954-2016. The methodology used in this paper is a literature review conducted on 2753 scientific articles and 156 journals. After establishing 100 top publications topics on client satisfaction, the contributors find that authors used almost the same methods of research and data collection. The main results demonstrate the increase of interest over the theme in different social and economic sciences, as well as in different countries. Important scientific journals also increase the number of publications on client satisfaction. Besides the high interest over this theme in the academia, the international literature reviews are still scarce. The approach, based on the construction of a database using a systematic selection process that was applied to the English language publications on social and economic science areas, is a valid tool that can be applied for literature reviews in all areas within social and economic sciences. To the contributors knowledge, the bibliometric analysis is applied for the first time on client satisfaction, so this is also a novel aspect of the paper to highlight.

Proposal of indicators for the structural analysis of scientific articles

Abstract This study aims to identify variables and indicators that substantiate the development of rules that focus on the structural analysis of scientific articles. Variables and indicators for structural analysis are derived from hypotheses deduced from editorials in important scientific journals. To exemplify and test the indicators, a structural analysis was conducted of 108 scientific articles published in important journals in the field of Management. The hypotheses were mostly tested in accordance with the idea of estimation statistics. The approach that was developed for the structural analysis of the network of texts innovates by employing network analysis indicators (indegree and outdegree). For this purpose, the text matrix is employed through the identification and encoding of cross-references between sections and subsections of each article under study. For the context in question, the field of Management, twelve rules were developed. The interpretations of the possible values for the indicators, expressed in the form of rules, are applied as directives to less experienced scholars in preparing their scientific articles, and for the generation of information to support activities concerning the classification and analysis of scientific articles.

SEDA: A software package for the Statistical Earthquake Data Analysis

In this paper, the first version of the software SEDA (SEDAv1.0), designed to help seismologists statistically analyze earthquake data, is presented. The package consists of a user-friendly Matlab-based interface, which allows the user to easily interact with the application, and a computational core of Fortran codes, to guarantee the maximum speed. The primary factor driving the development of SEDA is to guarantee the research reproducibility, which is a growing movement among scientists and highly recommended by the most important scientific journals. SEDAv1.0 is mainly devoted to produce accurate and fast outputs. Less care has been taken for the graphic appeal, which will be improved in the future. The main part of SEDAv1.0 is devoted to the ETAS modeling. SEDAv1.0 contains a set of consistent tools on ETAS, allowing the estimation of parameters, the testing of model on data, the simulation of catalogs, the identification of sequences and forecasts calculation. The peculiarities of routines inside SEDAv1.0 are discussed in this paper. More specific details on the software are presented in the manual accompanying the program package.

Presente e futuro da revista brasileira de psiquiatria (RBP)

A Revista Brasileira de Psiquiatria (RBP) é hoje uma das mais destacadas publicações cientí fi cas brasileiras, sendo atualmente o periódico de maior fator de impacto em todo o país em qualquer área das ciências. Ao longo dos últimos anos, a RBP vem se consolidando no cenário internacional das publicações da área de psiquiatria, atraindo um volume crescente de submissões, advindas dos mais diversos países. Neste arti go, a história recente da RBP é apresentada, destacando suas ações, contribuições e conquistas mais significativas.

Brazilian symposium of theoretical chemistry (SBQT2013)

This Topical Issue of the Journal of Molecular Modeling collects 23 selected works presented at the 17th Biannual Brazilian Symposium of Theoretical Chemistry (SBQT) held at the paradisiac Villa Galle Resort Hotel nestled on the Costa Verde (Green Coast) of the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 24 to 28, 2013. Following the tradition established in 1991, during the 6th SBQT and without interruption since then, selected papers presented at the Symposia, after rigorous peer-review, are published in special issues of important international scientific journals of the field. For the first time and in the same spirit, the Proceedings of 17th SBQTwill be published as a Topical Issue of the Journal of Molecular Modeling. This Topical Issue is a testimony to the maturity of the Brazilian Theoretical Chemistry Community and to the major scientific meeting of the area in Latin America. The 17th SBQT gathered over 295 participants from Brazil and abroad. The Program consisted of oral presentations from 13 foreign scientists and 17 Brazilians, 16 short talks (15 min) presented by young researchers, two posters sections, and a two-hour workshop on a new database. Without parallel sections, SBQT was a unique opportunity to get in touch with high-level science and to foster new collaborations. Moreover, given that over half of the total participants were undergraduate and graduate students, the Symposium was a unique and motivating opportunity for them to meet and discuss their research work with senior scientists of the area. We also paid a tribute, in a special session, to Ricardo de Carvalho Ferreira, from the Federal University of Pernambuco, one of the Brazilian pioneers in the field of theoretical chemistry, who had just passed away. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support to the 17th SBQT given by several agencies and sponsors.
